Abstract
OBJECTIVES There is growing interest in assessing patient quality of life (QOL) following treatment of sinonasal tumors, including inverted papilloma (IP). We aimed to elucidate the natural history of postoperative QOL outcomes in IP patients treated with surgery. METHODS Cases of sinonasal IP treated surgically at 4 tertiary academic rhinology centers were retrospectively reviewed. SNOT-22 scores were used to evaluate QOL preoperatively and postoperatively (1, 3, 6, 12 months). Repeated-measures ANOVA assessed for differences in mean scores over time. Linear regression identified factors associated with QOL longitudinally. RESULTS 373 patients were analyzed. Mean preoperative SNOT-22 score was 20.6 ± 20.4, which decreased to 16.3 ± 18.8 (p = 0.041) and 11.8 ± 15.0 (p < 0.001) at 1 and 3 months postoperatively, respectively. No further changes in SNOT-22 scores occurred beyond 3 months postoperatively (p > 0.05). When analyzed by SNOT-22 subdomains, nasal, sleep, and otologic/facial subdomain scores (all p < 0.05) demonstrated improvement at 12-month follow-up compared with preoperative scores; this was not observed for the emotional subdomain score (p = 0.800). Recurrent cases were associated with higher long-term SNOT-22 scores (β = 7.08; p = 0.017). Age, sex, degree of dysplasia, prior surgery, primary site, and smoking history did not correlate with symptoms (all p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS QOL outcomes related to IP resection are largely driven by nasal, sleep, and otologic/facial subdomains, though patients appear to experience enduring improvement as early as 3 months postoperatively. Abstract
BACKGROUND Sinonasal neoplasms, whether benign and malignant, pose a significant challenge to clinicians and represent a model area for multidisciplinary collaboration in order to optimize patient care. The International Consensus Statement on Allergy and Rhinology: Sinonasal Tumors (ICSNT) aims to summarize the best available evidence and presents 48 thematic and histopathology-based topics spanning the field. METHODS In accordance with prior International Consensus Statement on Allergy and Rhinology documents, ICSNT assigned each topic as an Evidence-Based Review with Recommendations, Evidence-Based Review, and Literature Review based on the level of evidence. An international group of multidisciplinary author teams were assembled for the topic reviews using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses format, and completed sections underwent a thorough and iterative consensus-building process. The final document underwent rigorous synthesis and review prior to publication. RESULTS The ICSNT document consists of four major sections: general principles, benign neoplasms and lesions, malignant neoplasms, and quality of life and surveillance. It covers 48 conceptual and/or histopathology-based topics relevant to sinonasal neoplasms and masses. Topics with a high level of evidence provided specific recommendations, while other areas summarized the current state of evidence. A final section highlights research opportunities and future directions, contributing to advancing knowledge and community intervention. CONCLUSION As an embodiment of the multidisciplinary and collaborative model of care in sinonasal neoplasms and masses, ICSNT was designed as a comprehensive, international, and multidisciplinary collaborative endeavor. Its primary objective is to summarize the existing evidence in the field of sinonasal neoplasms and masses.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Sinonasal inverted papilloma has a high tendency for recurrence, local bone destruction and risk of malignant transformation. Therefore, complete resection of the tumour is required, and close follow up is essential. This article describes the clinical outcomes, recurrence rate and malignant transformation rate of sinonasal inverted papilloma. METHODS In this study, 139 patients diagnosed with sinonasal inverted papilloma in our hospital from December 2010 to May 2022 were retrospectively analysed. All patients underwent endoscopic surgery. RESULTS Sinonasal inverted papilloma occurred more often in males than in females. The mean age of patients with sinonasal inverted papilloma was 67.3 ± 5.7 years at diagnosis. The most prevalent site of origin was the maxillary sinus (50.4 per cent). The recurrence rate was 5.75 per cent, and the malignant transformation rate was 6.5 per cent. CONCLUSION All patients in this study underwent endoscopic surgery. Meticulous resection and regular long-term follow ups are crucial to reducing sinonasal inverted papilloma recurrence after surgery.

Abstract
Long-term survival and recurrence patterns of squamous cell carcinoma arising from inverted papilloma (IP-SCC) have not been thoroughly investigated. Four electronic databases were searched and primary studies describing overall survival (OS), recurrence, and mean time to recurrence of patients with IP-SCC were included for review. Our search yielded 662 studies. The 28 studies selected for inclusion identified 663 patients with IP-SCC. In 596 patients with reported T classification, 439 (73.7%) were T3/T4 on presentation. Of the 650 participants with recurrence data (local, regional, and distant), 155 (23.8%) experienced a recurrence, with an aggregate mean time-to-recurrence of 24.3 months. In 565 patients with 5-year OS rates, the aggregate 5-year OS was 62%. Based on the literature to date, IP-SCC is associated with a 5-year OS rate of 62%. 23.8% of patients experienced recurrence at a mean time of 24.3 months, suggesting the need for long-term surveillance.

Abstract
Glandular neoplasms of the temporal-mastoid region and endolymphatic sac (ELS) are rare, and it is quite challenging to differentiate between an adenoma and an adenocarcinoma. ELS tumors (ELST) usually present with papillary, follicular, or solid patterns and can be further distinguished histologically and through immunohistochemistry. The microscopic features and clinical course of this neoplasm have been comprehensively explained by Heffner, who considered it "low-grade adenocarcinoma of likely ELS origin." The papillary form more commonly affects females, and it is a more aggressive form of ELST that is destructive and exhibits extensive local spread. The tumor usually has a close association with von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease, but 11%-30% of the ELST cases develop in individuals without a VHL mutation. ELSTs manifest with headaches, hearing loss, ear discharge, and cranial nerve palsies. Currently, the only available curative therapeutic intervention consists of wide local excision and long-term follow-up. Because of the sensitive location of this tumor, the adjuvant radiotherapy options are still questionable. In this case report, the author presents a 74-year-old woman with a past medical history of Schneiderian papilloma and was diagnosed with papillary mucinous adenocarcinoma of the ELS not associated with VHL disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Sinonasal inverted papilloma is a benign tumor but has a potential for recurrence and malignant transformation. The aim of this article is to analyze the clinical characteristics of sinonasal inverted papilloma associated with recurrence and malignant transformation. MATERIAL AND METHODS A retrospective study was performed in all patients with sinonasal inverted papilloma diagnosed between in our hospital during May 2013 and May 2018. RESULTS A total of 151 patients were enrolled in this study. The average age of these patients was 52.24 years, with a male-to-female ratio of 2.775:1, and the most frequent clinical symptom was nasal obstruction. The recurrence rate was 39.07% (59/151), the mean time of recurrence was 35.8 months and most recurrences occur within the first three years after surgery. There was no significant difference in recurrence rate between all four stages and between after endoscopic surgery and a combined endoscopic and external approach. The malignant transformation rate was 5.96% (9/151) and the mean time of malignant transformation was 9.06 months. CONCLUSIONS Because of its high recurrence rate and the potential of malignant transformation, so it is important to determine the primary site of the tumor and to make a complete removal and a follow-up of at least five years after surgery is recommended.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Sinonasal inverted papilloma (SNIP) is a benign tumor characterized by an aggressive growth, a tendency to recur, and an association with malignancy. However, the precise etiology of SNIP is still unknown. The objective of this study was to identify the expression pattern of speckled protein 100 (Sp100) in the malignant transformation (MT) of SNIP and its correlation with human papillomavirus (HPV)-16 and HPV-18 infections and other clinical features. This would further help in understanding the possible mechanisms for the development of SNIP. METHODS Individual nasal mucosa specimens from 40 patients (25 males and 15 females) and 10 inferior turbinate specimens as controls were included in the present study. The samples were divided into several sections for histopathological examination, HPV DNA detection, and immunohistochemical staining. RESULTS We observed that as SNIP progressed, the Sp100 protein expression was gradually downregulated, and SP100 localization changed from nucleus to the cytoplasm. Positive rate of HPV infection in the SNIP with MT group was higher than that in the other groups, and Sp100 expression was correlated to HPV infections and SNIP with MT. However, no correlation was observed between Sp100 expression and clinical features, such as age, gender, and smoking. CONCLUSION Positive rate of HPV infection is high in the SNIP with MT and has a correlation with Sp100 expression. In addition, the expression of Sp100 is downregulated in SNIP with MT, and Sp100 may play a role in the progression of SNIP.

Abstract
Sinonasal inverted papilloma (IP) is the most common benign epithelial tumor in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, with a worldwide incidence between 0.6 and 1.5/100 000 persons per year. However, only a few studies have investigated patient-dependent factors related to IP recurrence and persistence. According to available evidence, these factors are still debated, and results are contradictory. In this multicenter retrospective study, we analyzed the clinical records of 130 patients who were surgically treated for sinonasal IP to evaluate the factors affecting recurrence and persistence of IP and compared the curative rates of different surgical approaches. Our analysis showed that IP recurrence is strongly related to specific risk factors including incomplete surgical removal, stage of disease, site of the lesion, surgical technique, and malignancy rate. In conclusion, the recurrence of IP may be affected by several risk factors; these factors must be carefully considered during clinical evaluation and especially during the follow-up of patients with IP.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Sinonasal inverted papilloma is noted for its high rate of recurrence. Staging systems aid to reduce recurrence and avoid excessive surgeries by guiding the selection of the optimal surgical approach. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effectiveness of different endoscopic approaches in inverted papilloma by assessing tumor origin site and tumor volume. METHODS Krouse classification system that is based on tumor volume was used for staging; furthermore, tumor origin sites were grouped as lateral nasal wall, medial wall and other walls of maxillary sinus. The main treatment method for all patients was endoscopic sinus surgery. Endoscopic extended middle meatal antrostomy, endoscopic Caldwell-Luc and endoscopic medial maxillectomy were the additional surgery types performed in different combinations. RESULTS Fifty-five patients (42 male) with a mean 54.9±14.4 years of age were included. 37 patients were diagnosed with advanced stage inverted papilloma (67.2 %). Recurrence was observed in 12 patients (21.8 %). In early stage lateral nasal wall origination, no recurrence was observed in the simple tumor resection group (0/10). In early stage medial wall origination, no recurrence was observed in the extended middle meatal antrostomy group (0/8). In advanced stage medial wall origination, the recurrence rates of extended middle meatal antrostomy, extended middle meatal antrostomy+endoscopic Caldwell- Luc and endoscopic medial maxillectomy were 100.0 %, 53.8 % and 13.6 %, respectively (p=0.002). In advanced stage other walls of maxillary sinus origination, recurrence rates of extended middle meatal antrostomy+endoscopic Caldwell-Luc and endoscopic medial maxillectomy were 20 % and 16.6 %, respectively (p=0.887). CONCLUSION Tumor origin site, tumor stage and surgery types show an impact on recurrence. Despite the fact that tumor origin site singly could lead to appropriate selection of the surgery type in most cases, tumor stage carries substantial importance in selection of surgery type for sinonasal-inverted papilloma. An operation plan regarding both tumor volume and tumor origin site may aid surgeons in selecting optimal endoscopic surgical method to avoid recurrence or excessive surgeries.

Abstract
Introduction Although sinonasal inverted papillomas are benign lesions, they are locally aggressive and have a potential malignant transformation ranging from 5% to 15%, with a high recurrence rate. Objective The aim of this article is to describe the rate of recurrence and malignant transformation in patients with a diagnosis of inverted papilloma who underwent surgery in a tertiary hospital in São Paulo. Methods We performed a retrospective analysis of patients diagnosed with sinonasal papilloma who had undergone surgery in a tertiary hospital in São Paulo, between August 1998 and August 2017. A patient chart review was conducted to assess data of patients’ demographics, tumors characteristics, follow-up appointments, recurrence and malignancy. Inverted papillomas were analyzed and classified under the Krouse staging system. Results A total of 69 surgeries were performed in patients with diagnosis of sinonasal papilloma. Inverted papilloma was the most prevalent subtype (49 cases ‒ 80.33%), followed by exophytic papilloma (6 cases ‒ 9.84%) and by oncocytic papilloma (6 cases – 9.84%). The recurrence rate was 34.09% for inverted papilloma (15/44) and the mean time of recurrence was 24.6 months. Malignant transformation occurred in 6 patients (13.64%). Three of these patients presented carcinoma in the first surgery and three patients developed carcinoma during the follow-up. Conclusion The high recurrence rate and malignancy potential allow us to consider inverted papillomas as aggressive tumors. In a tertiary hospital in São Paulo the recurrence rate the mean time to recurrence is 24.6 months. The recurrence after 10 years implies was 34.09% and the need for long-term follow up. It is possible that the high recurrence rate and the high malignant transformation rate we found are due to the large number of tumors discovered at an advanced stage (most of them staged T3 and T4), secondary to poor access to health system, in developing countries.

Abstract
Background Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis is a chronic disease of viral origin affecting the larynx, trachea, and lower airways. Inverted papilloma, most commonly originating from the lateral nasal wall, is typically a single, expansile, locally aggressive tumor that remodels bone around the site of origin. Case presentation We report a case of histopathologically proven inverted papilloma occurring in a 50-year-old Caucasian man with recurrent respiratory papillomatosis affecting his nasal cavity, larynx, and trachea. This constitutes the first report of nasal involvement in recurrent respiratory papillomatosis. Viral in situ hybridization studies demonstrated evidence of human papillomavirus in both the septum and middle turbinate subsites. Repeat nasal excision with margin analysis is planned. Conclusions This report emphasizes the importance of considering a broad differential diagnosis in patients with papillomata, and obtaining comprehensive histopathologic evaluation of lesions in multiple subsites in order to rule out inverted papilloma or overt malignant transformation, particularly if high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) subtypes are identified. Abstract
Background We aimed to assess the recurrence risk of sinonasal inverted papillomas (SNIPs), based on a staging system developed according to the originating site of SNIP. Methods A total of 200 patients with SNIP were enrolled, and a staging system was developed based on the originating sites and corresponding recurrence rates of tumor in the patients. In the verification phase, 675 patients with SNIPs were enrolled as above, and the originating sites of the SNIPs were confirmed by an endoscopic sinus surgery. Cluster analysis was performed to determine the stage for each SNIP. Results Overall, 608 patients completed the study. SNIP recurrence rates for stages 1‐4 were 0 (n = 43), 4.0% (n = 420), 13.4% (n = 134), 36.4% (n = 11), respectively (total = 6.4%). Conclusions The origin site‐based classification of SNIP may aid surgeons in selecting appropriate endoscopic surgical approaches to minimize the risk of recurrence.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to validate and compare treatment outcomes for endoscopic resection of sinonasal inverted papilloma (IP) with or without the use of a navigation system. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 58 patients who underwent endoscopic resection of sinonasal inverted papilloma by a single surgeon from 2007 to 2016 at our institution were retrospectively reviewed. Depending on the use of the navigation system, subjects were divided into two groups: a conventional endoscopic resection group without navigation system (CER group) and a navigation-assisted endoscopic resection group (NER group). RESULTS There were 24 patients (41.4%) in the CER group and 34 patients (58.6%) in the NER group. Treatment outcomes showed that navigation-assisted endoscopic resection was a more beneficial surgical technique than conventional endoscopic resection for sinonasal IP. Post-surgical recurrence was noted in seven cases (29.2%) in the CER group and two cases (5.9%) in the NER group. Accordingly, the recurrence rate was significantly less in the NER group compared to the CER group (p = 0.026). There were two cases of complications (8.3%) in the CER group comprising cerebrospinal fluid leak and periorbital fat exposure, while no complications were noted for the NER group (p = 0.167). CONCLUSION This study demonstrated that navigation-assisted endoscopic removal of sinonasal IP is helpful for reducing recurrence and avoiding surgical complications. Therefore, navigation systems should be always considered when performing endoscopic removal of sinonasal IP.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Our aim was to review our management of inverted papilloma (IP), perform a recurrence analysis, and review the literature. METHODS A retrospective analysis of 247 patients treated for an IP. Patients were grouped according to surgical approach, tumor presentation (primary, residual and recurrence) and Krouse-stage. RESULTS Recurrence was observed in 20.3%, 28.6% and 35.1% (p = 0.017) of the patients who underwent endoscopic, external and combined surgery, respectively. Recurrences occurred more often in residual than primary IP (36.9% vs. 22.3%, p = 0.021). Primary endoscopic surgery had a recurrence rate of 12.5%, which was comparable to the recent literature (11.2%, 161/1433). CONCLUSIONS The relatively high number of recurrences in this cohort is explained by the long follow-up and previous (incomplete) surgery in 61.5% of the cases. The inferior outcome of residual IP underscores the importance of having a low threshold for preoperative biopsy in unilateral and atypical sinonasal disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The recurrence rate of sinonasal inverted papillomas (SNIP) is 15-20%. However, few studies have investigated patient-dependent factors related to recurrence of SNIPs. OBJECTIVE To analyze risk factors, including human papilloma virus (HPV) infection and smoking, as well as other factors, for recurrence of SNIPs. METHODS Fifty-four patients who were diagnosed with SNIP and underwent surgery were enrolled: 39 men and 15 women, with the mean age of 54.0 years. Their mean follow-up was 40.6 months. Demographics and information about the history of smoking, previous surgery, tumor extent, follow-up, and recurrence were reviewed retrospectively. Those patients whose tumors were associated with malignant transformation were excluded in this study. HPV detection and genotyping in the tumor specimens were performed with the HPV DNA chip, a polymerase chain reaction-based DNA microarray system. RESULTS Seven patients (13.0%) had recurrence, with a mean time to recurrence of 39.8 months. Recurrence rates in T1, T2, T3, and T4 of the Krouse staging system were 0% (0/4), 8.3% (2/24), 17.4% (4/23), and 33.3% (1/3), respectively (p > 0.5). Eight patients (14.8%) were positive for HPV DNA. All of these patients belonged to the group without recurrence (p > 0.5). However, recurrence rates according to HPV DNA positivity were not statistically different (0% versus 15.2%). Three (42.9%) in the group with recurrence and four (8.5%) in the group without recurrence were smokers (p < 0.5). CONCLUSION Smoking was associated with recurrence of SNIP. However, HPV infection is not a recurrence of SNIP risk factor.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Inverted papillomas are a benign sinonasal tumor with a propensity for recurrence and malignant transformation. Although many investigations have been made into the nature of this disease, its etiology and causes for malignant transformation have yet to be fully elucidated. It is the authors' objective to present a review on management of the disease and evaluate the present relationship between human papilloma virus (HPV) and inverted papilloma. RECENT FINDINGS A causal relationship between HPV and the pathogenesis and progression of inverted papilloma has been posited since the 1980s. Although widely varied HPV detection rates have been reported, recent studies have noted a substantial increase in both recurrence and malignant transformation in HPV-infected inverted papillomas. However, exact cellular mechanisms by which infection leads to subsequent recurrence and development of carcinoma have yet to be elucidated. SUMMARY Evidence exists suggesting that HPV infection plays a role in the progression of inverted papilloma and confers an increased risk for recurrence and malignant transformation. PCR is the preferred detection method, and fresh or frozen specimens are the ideal source of tissue for evaluation. Although multiple studies have detected an association between HPV and inverted papilloma (both recurrent and malignant transformation), further studies are necessary to elucidate the underlying molecular pathways before an association can be changed to causation.

Abstract
Skull base inverted papilloma (IP) is an unusual entity for many neurosurgeons. IP is renowned for its high rate of recurrence, its ability to cause local destruction, and its association with malignancy. This paper is a comprehensive review of the reports, studies, and reviews published in the current biomedical literature from 1947 to September 2010 and synthesize this information to focus on its potential invasion to the base of the skull and possible intradural extension. The objective is to familiarize the clinician with the different aspects of this unusual disease. The role of modern diagnostic tools in medical imaging in order to assess clearly the limits of the tumors and to enhance the efficiency and the safety in the choice of a surgical approach is pointed out. The treatment guidelines for IP have undergone a complex evolution that continues today. Radical excision of the tumour is technically difficult and often incomplete. Successful management of IP requires resection of the affected mucosa which could be achieved with open surgery, endoscopic, or combined approach. Radio and chemotherapy were used for certain indications. More optimally research would be a multicenter randomized trials with large size cohorts.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS The study group for sinonasal tumors at the Korean Rhinologic Society analyzed the results of the Korean multicenter experience for sinonasal inverted papilloma (IP) surgeries. STUDY DESIGN Multicenter cohort study and retrospective analysis. METHODS In total, 939 patients diagnosed with sinonasal IP treated between 1998 and 2007 at 17 university hospitals were enrolled. Demographic data and information about previous surgeries, the origin and involved site of the tumor, the surgical approach, follow-up duration, recurrence, and the presence of malignancy were collected. There were 361 patients whose follow-up was <12 months who were excluded, and 578 patients were included for recurrence analysis. RESULTS The mean follow-up duration for recurrence analysis was 41.0 months, and 15.7% (91/578) had recurrences, with a mean time to recurrence of 32.6 months. However, the group whose follow-up was longer than 3 years had a higher chance of tumor recurrence. Patients whose IPs involved the frontal sinus or the medial wall of the maxillary sinus had higher recurrence rates. There was no significant difference in recurrence rates according to stage or surgical approach. In the T3 stage of Krouse, the T3-A stage of Furuta, and group B of the Citardi staging system, the endoscopic approach alone resulted in higher recurrence rates. CONCLUSIONS Generally, there were no significant differences in recurrence rates according to clinical stage or surgical approach. Given the rate of delayed recurrence, follow-up of >3 years is required. Moreover, surgeons should always consider combined approaches to reduce the chances of recurrence.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/PURPOSE Unilateral maxillary sinus opacity can be caused by many diseases, but an exact diagnosis is difficult to make. The aim of this study was to describe the pathological conditions and clinical features of patients with unilateral maxillary sinus opacity. METHODS From 2004 to 2008, 830 consecutive patients underwent sinus surgery or endonasal endoscopic biopsy at an academic tertiary care center. The preoperative computed tomography (CT) images for these patients were reviewed, and 11 6 patients were identified with complete unilateral maxillary sinus opacification. We then analyzed presenting symptoms, physical examinations, specific CT findings, and pathology. RESULTS The most frequent diagnoses were as follows: chronic rhinosinusitis (52.6%), fungus ball (29.3%), antrochoanal polyp (2.6%), benign tumor (10.4%), and malignancy (5.1%). Fungus ball was the most common diagnosis (10/18, 55.6%) in the subgroup of patients with isolated maxillary sinus opacity without disease in the other sinuses. Nasal discharge and foul-smelling breath were more common in inflammatory disease than in neoplastic disease. Neoplastic disease was more likely to present as epistaxis; a polyp or mass revealed by nasal endoscopy; mass effect in the cheek, palate, or gingiva; and bony erosion on CT. Erosion of the maxillary posterolateral wall and extra-sinus extension suggested malignancy. CONCLUSION Although unilateral maxillary sinus opacity is usually inflammatory in origin, fungal sinusitis and neoplastic disorder are also likely. A careful history-taking, a thorough head and neck examination including nasal endoscopy, and CT evaluation are all imperative for reaching a correct diagnosis.

Abstract
Inverted papilloma (IP) is a rare nasosinusal benign tumour, with epithelium surface inversion to inside the stroma. Extension to intracranial temporal fossa and middle ear has been reported in few cases in the literature. This involvement may be derived from either direct extension from sinonasal cavity via the Eustachian tube or primary middle ear involvement secondary to metaplastic changes of the middle ear mucosa. Here, we report a case of inverted papilloma in a male patient, with multiple recurrences, middle ear and intracranial involvement into the temporal fossa with posterior development of malignancy. This patient had received multiple surgeries and radiotherapy but despite of that, his disease recurred several times. As a conclusion, inverted papilloma is a benign tumour with an aggressive course, tendency to recurrence and progression to malignancy. Intracranial and temporal fossa involvements are rare and the treatment depends of the symptoms and the severity of the disease.

Abstract
CONCLUSIONS The midfacial degloving approach is a favorable option for advanced sinonasal inverted papilloma with a fair recurrence rate, and can replace the lateral rhinotomy approach, which is considered too invasive for benign tumor due to its facial scar. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to assess the treatment outcomes of advanced sinonasal inverted papillomas according to surgical approaches over a 20-year period. MATERIAL AND METHODS We retrospectively reviewed clinic, operative, radiologic, and pathologic records of patients with surgically treated sinonasal inverted papilloma, and compared recurrence rates of patients treated with the endoscopic approach, midfacial degloving approach, and lateral rhinotomy approach in each Krouse stage of inverted papilloma. RESULTS A total of 114 patients were diagnosed and treated surgically for the sinonasal inverted papilloma. The follow-up period ranged from 10 months to 12 years (mean 2.8 years). The overall recurrence rate was 23.7% (27/114). Among the patients classified as Krouse stage III, 33.3% (9/27) of the endoscopic approach group, 11.1% (2/18) of the midfacial degloving approach group, and 25.0% (2/8) of the lateral rhinotomy approach group had recurrences.

Abstract
CONCLUSION Endoscopic removal, with or without external technique, can be performed in a majority of inverted papilloma cases. This method has subsequent recurrence rates that are comparable to those of more aggressive external techniques and it is more cost efficient with less morbidity. OBJECTIVES To analyze the clinical outcomes of our 21-year experience (1986-2006) in treating inverted papillomas using different treatment modalities. PATIENTS AND METHODS The patients were divided into a conventional surgery group (CSG) and an endoscopic surgery group (ESG) and were staged according to the system developed by Krouse. A retrospective assessment was performed. RESULTS The recurrence rates were 4.3% in ESG and 9.5% in CSG. There was no significant difference in the recurrence rates according to the treatment modality used and the Krouse stage in the two groups. Mean operation time was 72.93+/-18.51 min in the ESG and 112.02+/-56.52 min in the CSG. Mean period of hospital stay was 4.66+/-1.75 days in the ESG and 9.54+/-4.79 days in the CSG. The complication rate was 3.2% in the ESG and 33.3% in the CSG. There was a significant difference in the operation time, length of hospital stay, and complication rate in the two groups.
