Abstract
OBJECTIVES Retrograde cricopharyngeal dysfunction (RCPD) is a newly described condition resulting from failure of cricopharyngeal sphincter relaxation during periods of esophageal distension that results in the inability to burp. Patients' perspectives on symptom experiences, barriers to care, and treatment benefits were investigated. STUDY DESIGN Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted with patients diagnosed with RCPD who had been treated with botulinum toxin injection into the cricopharyngeus muscle. Interview questions centered on their experience living with RCPD. Conventional content analysis was performed on interview transcripts. RESULTS Thematic saturation was reached with 13 participants. All participants were diagnosed with RCPD by an otolaryngologist and underwent botulinum toxin injection into the cricopharyngeus muscle with or without dilation of the upper esophageal sphincter in the operating room. Participants described having no memories of ever being able to burp, and all started experiencing RCPD symptoms during adolescence. Patients with RCPD experienced increased social isolation, lost productivity, and worsened mental health. Unanimously, participants first learned about RCPD on social media. All patients were seen by physicians in non-otolaryngology specialties regarding their symptoms prior to learning about their RCPD diagnosis and undergoing treatment by an otolaryngologist. Dilation and chemodenervation resulted in complete resolution of RCPD symptoms for 84.6% of participants. Participants emphasized a desire for more health providers to learn about RCPD and the impact it has on quality-of-life. CONCLUSION(S) The lived experience of patients with RCPD significantly impacts quality of life and is often met with diagnostic barriers in the medical community. Although social media plays a significant role in increasing awareness of RCPD, physician education about the impact of RCPD is essential to improve diagnosis and treatment. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the readability of patient-facing educational information about the most common otolaryngology diagnoses on popular social media platforms. STUDY DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING Social media platforms. METHODS The top 5 otolaryngologic diagnoses were identified from the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey Database. Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram were searched using these terms, and the top 25 patient-facing posts from unique accounts for each search term and poster type (otolaryngologist, other medical professional, layperson) were identified. Captions, text, and audio from images and video, and linked articles were extracted. The readability of each post element was calculated with multiple readability formulae. Readability was summarized and was compared between poster types, platforms, and search terms via Kruskal-Wallis testing. RESULTS Median readability, by grade level, by grade level, was greater than 10 for captions, 5 for image-associated text, and 9 for linked articles. Captions and images in posts by laypeople were significantly more readable than captions by otolaryngologists or other medical professionals, but there was no difference for linked articles. All post components were more readable in posts about cerumen than those about other search terms. CONCLUSIONS When examining the readability of posts on social media regarding the most common otolaryngology diagnoses, we found that many posts are less readable than recommended for patients, and found that posts by laypeople were significantly more readable than those by medical professionals. Medical professionals should work to make educational social media posts more readable to facilitate patient comprehension.

Abstract
Retrograde cricopharyngeal dysfunction (RCPD), also referred to as retrograde cricopharyngeus dysfunction, is a condition characterized by the inability to burp. The pathophysiology of this condition is thought to result from failure of cricopharyngeal sphincter relaxation during periods of esophageal distension, which leads to patients' bothersome symptoms. RCPD negatively impacts patients' quality of life and is associated with bloating, gurgling, avoidance of carbonation, self-imposed dietary and lifestyle changes designed to minimize discomfort, and flatulence. Complaints often start during adolescence, and many patients search for a diagnosis for years before obtaining treatment. A recent increase in awareness through patient-led social media discussion boards describing the 'no burp' syndrome is leading to an increasing incidence of presentations, often with patients making a self-diagnosis. The increased incidence of RCPD is fueling a larger case series investigating treatment options and outcomes. In this review, we discuss what is known about the pathophysiology of this condition, the otolaryngologic perspective on diagnosis and treatment, the patients' lived experience of this condition, and the influence of social media on RCPD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the influence of social media platforms, including TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook, in shaping public perceptions about tonsillectomies and to identify the nature of the content disseminated on these platforms. METHODS A comprehensive analysis of 1482 relevant social media posts related to tonsillectomies was conducted across major platforms, including TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook. Content was categorized based on author, topic of the post, timeframe, and overall tone. The study also compared engagement metrics across platforms. RESULTS TikTok emerged as the most engaging platform with a mean of 3272.8 likes per post. Patients drove 61.6 % of the discourse, with 63.9 % of discussions being lifestyle oriented. Educational content constituted 12.5 % of the overall discourse. Sentiments towards the procedure were almost evenly split, with 29.4 % positive and 28.5 % negative; 92 % of the negative posts were authored by patients. CONCLUSIONS Patients were the most common social media authors, driving the conversation and a significant portion expressing negative views. Physicians, conversely, showed a low level of social media engagement. By understanding and addressing online narratives, clinicians can offer more informed patient support, debunk myths, and provide empathetic insights, ensuring positive patient experiences in the era of digital health communication.

KEY POINTS We analyzed social media posts on Facebook and Instagram discussing new rhinologic devices. Patient posts are a valuable source of patient perspective regarding rhinologic procedures. The majority of posts are by physicians giving information and advertising these new procedures.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Social media (SM) is an increasingly popular medium for the medical community to engage with patients, trainees, and colleagues. This review aimed to identify reported uses of SM in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery (OHNS), assess the quality of evidence supporting these uses, and identify gaps in the literature. With the relative lack of regulatory guidelines for the development of SM content, we hypothesized that the quality of content available on SM would be highly variable. DATA SOURCES AND METHODS A scoping review was performed of English-language peer-reviewed studies published to date discussing SM use in any form within OHNS. Three reviewers independently screened all abstracts. Two reviewers independently extracted data of interest from the full text of articles identified from the preliminary abstract screen. RESULTS 171 studies were included, with 94 (54.9%) studies published between 2020 and 2022. 104 (60.8%) studies were conducted in the US. 135 (78.9%) used cross-sectional or survey-based methodology; only 7 (4.1%) were controlled studies. SM was most commonly employed for professional networking (n = 37 [21%]), and within subspecialties of otology (n = 38 [22%]) and rhinology/allergy (n = 25 [15%]). Facebook was most frequently used for study recruitment (n = 23 [13.5%]), YouTube for patient education (n = 15 [14.6%]), and Twitter for professional networking (n = 16 [9.4%]). CONCLUSION SM use within OHNS is increasing rapidly, with applications including patient education, professional networking, and study recruitment. Despite myriad articles, there remains a paucity of well-controlled studies. As SM becomes integrated into healthcare, particularly for applications directly impacting patient care, higher levels of evidence are needed to understand its true impact. Kılınç DD. Is the information about orthodontics on Youtube and TikTok reliable for the oral health of the public? A cross sectional comparative study. Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare orthodontic videos uploaded to YouTube and TikTok, the two most popular video sharing platforms, and to determine which of these platforms has more reliable and higher quality videos. MATERIALS AND METHOD YouTube (www.YouTube.com) and Tiktok (www.tiktok.com) was searched for two search-terms: "Orthodontics" and "Orthodontic Treatment". Reliability and quality of the first 120 videos for each search-term was evaluated by social media video content evaluation tools: Global Quality Score (GQS) and Reliability Score (modified DISCERN tool). RESULTS While YouTube videos were more informative or sharing patient experiences, TikTok videos were almost purely entertainment oriented. Tiktok videos had lower reliability. YouTube videos were rated of higher quality than Tiktok videos. GQS mean values for Youtube and TikTok were 2.90 ± 1.35 and 2.23 ± 1.08 respectively; and reliability (DISCERN) values were 2.42 ± 1.70 and 1.27 ± 1.48 respectively. GQS median values for Youtube and TikTok were 3 and 2 respectively; and reliability (DISCERN) values were 2 and 1 respectively. Most of the uploaders in both platforms were professionals. CONCLUSION Neither YouTube videos nor Tiktok videos were found to be reliable or of good quality. Videos on YouTube were higher quality and more reliable than videos on TikTok. However, YouTube videos also contained unreliable information.
