Abstract
INTRODUCTION During the COVID pandemic many centres adopted e-learning as a tool to adhere to social distancing recommendations while continuing to provide ongoing postgraduate medical education. We aimed to complete this scoping review in order to map experience and perceptions amongst surgeons and surgical trainees to remote learning during the COVID pandemic. METHODS Using Arksey and O'Malley's five step model for conducting a scoping review, a systematic search strategy was undertaken across three online databases SCOPUS, MEDLINE and Web of Science. Only original articles in English in the field of postgraduate education in surgery were included. RESULTS 44 studies were selected for review. Of these 44, 21 were studies of perception of a newly developed e-learning tool/platform. 17 were surveys of surgeon's attitudes towards e-learning during the COVID pandemic. The remaining 6 studies were studies of knowledge or skills acquired through new e-learning, which included a survey of experience. The United States was the most common country of origin with General Surgery the most represented surgical speciality. Response rates across all three study subgroups were on average >60%. Surgeon's experience of e-learning was reported in only positive terms in 86% (n = 38/44) of studies. CONCLUSIONS This paper is informative in that it focuses specifically on surgeons' perceptions of a e-learning tools used in addition to skills or knowledge gained. Positive e-learning experience reported in these studies may lead to more blended learning curriculums being developed, deployed and evaluated going forward.

Abstract
Virtual education is an evolving field within the realm of surgical training. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the application of virtual technologies in surgical education has undergone significant exploration and advancement. While originally developed to supplement in-person curricula for the development of clinical decision-making, virtual surgical education has expanded into the realms of clinical decision-making, surgical, and non-surgical skills acquisition. This manuscript aims to discuss the various applications of virtual surgical education as well as the advantages and disadvantages associated with each education modality, while offering recommendations on best practices and future directions.

Abstract
Perspectives of simulated participants (SPs) as stakeholders in simulation education are under-represented. With rapid increase in virtual education and anticipation of post-pandemic continuation it is important to establish best practices. This work aims to determine SP perceptions of telesimulation.
In-depth semi-structured interviews determined SP opinions of participation in telesimulation. Thematic analysis utilizing an inductive and semantic iterative coding process was performed. SPs completed a survey of their demographics, experience and prior SP training, both virtual and in-person.
Data sufficiency occurred after 16 interviews (10 females/6 males; 15 White/1 Black/African American). Median age was 56 years (range 37–72). Median number of in-person simulation experiences was 100 (range 6–300) and 27 telesimulations (range 3–100). Thematic analysis identified five themes: (1) students behave differently (distracted, less professional, less prepared for ‘real life’, less nervous), (2) my performance – some things are easier and some harder (increased cognitive load, coming out of role more, difficulties with non-verbal aspect, more standardized performance), (3) it’s harder to connect with learners (different cues, less of a personal connection), (4) safety for all in telesimulation (as psychologically safe as in-person, appreciate opportunity to continue to educate/work, personal safety), (5) future applications of telesimulation (telehealth training, better access to education for learners).
SP perceptions of telesimulation education revealed appreciation of the educational modality and identified potential benefit in telehealth education. SPs were concerned about learner participation, professionalism and resultant preparation for clinical practice. Incorporating SP feedback into telesimulation education may be important to ensure high quality.

Abstract
Dealing with rapid, unanticipated disruptions to established learning environments are challenging. There are a number of situations that may require this including natural disasters such as weather disturbance, viral pandemics, or political unrest and violence. For example, the COVID-19 pandemic provided medical educators with this challenge and enabled valuable lessons to be learnt. These can be utilized to prepare for other occurrences in which disruptions must be faced and high-quality education delivered. Focus should be placed both on successful transition of learning events to a new modality appropriate to the emerging climate and on reliably assessing efficacy of these new educational strategies with identification of those best suited to the new environment. We present a framework, based on local lessons learnt, by which the challenges faced during an educational disruption can be addressed, and describe methods to determine which changes are most effective and should be durable.

Abstract
Background The COVID-19 pandemic has increased utilization of educational technology for surgical education. Our aim was to determine attitudes and behaviors of surgical education champions towards virtual educational platforms and learner engagement. Methods An electronic survey was distributed to all Association of Surgical Education members addressing i) methods of engagement in virtual learning ii) ways to improve engagement and iii) what influences engagement. Stratified analysis was used to evaluate differences in responses by age, gender, level of training and specialty. Results 154 ASE members completed the survey (13% response rate). 88% respondents accessed virtual learning events at home. Most (87%) had joined a virtual learning event and then participated in another activity. 1 in 5 who did this did so “always” or “often”. Female respondents were more likely than males to join audio and then participate in another activity (62.3% v 37.7%, p = 0.04). Conclusions Virtual platforms do not automatically translate into increased learner engagement. Careful design of educational strategies is essential to increase and maintain learner engagement when utilizing virtual surgical education.
