Palliative care is directed to relieve the symptoms of serious and life-threatening illnesses. Unfortunately, it's usually provided lately in the disease course in developing countries due to a lack of awareness about its concept, which deprives many patients of its benefits. This study aims to investigate the knowledge and attitude of the Jordanian general public toward palliative care. A cross-sectional study was conducted using an electronic questionnaire via social media platforms. Knowledge about palliative care was measured using the "Palliative Care Knowledge Scale" (PaCKS), whereas the attitude was measured using an edited version of the "Frommelt Attitudes Toward Care of the Dying -B(FATCOD-B)" tool. The inclusion criteria were adults older than 18 years old who live in Jordan. Any subject who was younger than 18 years old, refused to give informed consent, and working or studying in a healthcare-related profession was excluded. 329 respondents filled out the survey (females = 214 (65%), mean age = 32.7 ± (13.63) years). Only 67 respondents (20.4%) heard about palliative care previously. The average knowledge score (out of 13) was 6.8 (±4.2). The average attitude score (out of 5) was 3.0 (±.4). Higher knowledge self-evaluation, older age, and higher income were factors associated with a higher level of knowledge and favorable attitude toward palliative care. Our study showed a moderate knowledge and neutral attitude toward palliative care. Further awareness campaigns should be conducted to raise the awareness of the Jordanian society regarding the objectives of palliative care.

Towards the Provision of Palliative Care Services in the Intensive Coronary Care Units: Nurses' Knowledge, Training Needs, and Related-Barriers

Despite the notable benefits of palliative care (PC) for patients with chronic diseases, its delivery to people with cardiac problems, particularly in the Middle East region (EMR), remains a critical issue. There is a scarcity of research assessing nursing staff's needs and knowledge in providing PC to cardiac patients in the EMR. This study aimed to assess the level of knowledge and needs of PC among nurses towards the provision of PC in intensive coronary care units (ICCUs) in the Gaza Strip, Palestine. It also identified the barriers to the provision of PC services in ICCUs in the Gaza Strip. A hospital-based descriptive quantitative cross-sectional design was adopted to collect data from 85 nurses working in ICCUs at four main hospitals in the Gaza Strip. Knowledge about PC was collected using a developed questionnaire based on the Palliative Care Quiz Nursing Scale (PCQN) and Palliative Care Knowledge Test (PCKT). PC training needs and barriers were assessed using the PC Needs Assessment instrument. Approximately two-thirds of nurses did not receive any PC educational or training programs, which contributed to their lack of PC knowledge. Most nurses would like to enroll in PC training programs, such as family support and communications skills courses. Nurses reported that there was a high demand for PC guidelines and discharge planning for patients with chronic illnesses. Insufficient healthcare professionals' knowledge about PC and a staff shortage were the main barriers to integrating PC into the Gaza healthcare system. This study suggests incorporating PC into nursing curricula and in-service training, and it covers both basic and advanced PC principles. Intensive coronary care unit nurses need knowledge and training about PC, guidance, and support to provide appropriate care to patients with cardiovascular issues.

Neonatal intensive care unit nurses knowledge and attitude toward neonatal palliative care: review of the literature

Aim

To review studies regarding neonatal nurses' knowledge and attitude toward neonatal palliative care (NPC).

Method

The researchers searched internet sources such as Google Scholar for NPC, Nurses, Knowledge, Attitude, and Educational Intervention.

Results

Subheadings identified in the literature review were Nurses Knowledge toward NPC in NICU, Nurses Attitude toward NPC in NICU, correlation between Knowledge and Attitude toward NPC in NICU, The Effect of Educational program on Nurses Knowledge and Attitude toward NPC in NICU, and the Predictors of Knowledge and Attitude toward NPC among Nurses in NICU and Barriers to NPC provision and improvement.

Conclusion

There are few studies from different nations regarding NPC found nurses have an inadequate knowledge of NPC, which also reflects their attitude.

Evaluation of Medical Students' Knowledge on Palliative Care: A Single Institution Cross-sectional Study

BACKGROUND

Palliative care is the branch of medicine which has a target of setting focus on the improvement of the quality of life of patients, particularly toward their end of life, such as cases of terminal diseases with low prognosis. Despite growing recognition of the importance of palliative care, a gap remains in medical education. Our study aims to evaluate the current level of knowledge of medical students in regard to palliative care.

METHODS

A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in Batterjee Medical College, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, through a period of three months from December 2021 to March 2022.

RESULTS

A total of 254 students participated in our study. Psychosocial and spiritual needs of the patient alongside definition of palliative care were perceived the most important by the students with a mean score of 3.9 each.

CONCLUSION

Our study concludes that there is an overall lack of confidence among medical students in providing palliative care. We recommend further enhancement and implementation of palliative care as part of undergraduate mandatory courses.

Assessment of the Educational and Health Care System-Related Issues From Physicians' and Nurses' Perspectives Before Developing a Palliative Care Program Within the Palestinian Health Care System: A Cross-sectional Study

A scarcity in research assessing the palliative care (PC) educational and health care system-related issues has been reported in the Middle East region; the region comprises a wide range of economically diverse countries. Discrepancies across countries have created difficulties in adopting other countries' experiences. This study aimed to assess PC knowledge, attitude, educational needs, and health care system-related issues from physicians' and nurses' perspectives before developing PC services within the Palestinian health care system. One hundred sixty-nine professionals participated in this cross-sectional survey. Data were collected by validated instruments. Professionals had insufficient knowledge about PC, but they had positive attitudes toward end-of-life care and care of the dying. Patients'/families' avoidance of talking about issues around dying and lack of training for staff related to PC were the most 2 significant barriers to providing PC. Educational level and previous training were found to be associated significantly with knowledge and attitudes toward PC. Study conclusions support the recommendation for integration of education about PC within the health curricula and in-service training and should cover the basic and advanced principles of PC and symptom management.

Impact of educational programs on nurses' knowledge and attitude toward pediatric palliative care

OBJECTIVE

This study aims to assess the knowledge and attitude of nurses toward pediatric palliative care (PPC) and examine the impact of an educational program on pediatric nurses' knowledge and attitude regarding PPC for children facing life-threatening illnesses or chronic diseases in Jordan.

METHOD

A quasi-experimental design was used. Exactly 120 pediatric nurses participated in the study, of which 60 were in the intervention group and 60 in the control group.

RESULTS

The results of the study showed that nurses had a low score in knowledge and attitude toward PPC. The mean knowledge score of PPC for the control group is 6.88 (SD = 2.26), while that of the intervention group was 7.92 (SD = 1.99; p = 0.052). The mean attitude for PPC score for the control group was 95.88 (SD = 7.90), while that of the intervention group was 100 (SD = 10.95; p = 0.009). Also, the educational intervention had a significant positive effect on the knowledge and attitude toward PPC among nurses.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE RESULTS

Based on the result of this study, the authors found strong evidence of the effectiveness of the PPC educational program when it came to improving the nurses' knowledge and attitude toward PPC services and offer us an effective educational program.
