Heartbeat of Care: Exploring Radiographers' Insights Into CPR Knowledge and Attitudes in Jordan

Objective

This study aimed to assess the knowledge and attitude of Jordanian radiographers toward Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), in addition to exploring factors associated with their knowledge and attitude.

Methods

This was a cross-sectional study. Convenience sampling was used to collect data from 359 radiographers currently working at governmental, university, military, and private hospitals across the country. Data were collected using an online Google form questionnaire between October 5, 2023 and December 27, 2023. The questionnaire included questions about demographic information, knowledge of CPR, and attitude toward performing CPR. The data were analyzed using SPSS IBM software v. 28, and P-values <0.05 were considered statistically significant.

Results

A total of 359 radiographers with a mean age of 31.71±8.22 years participated in the study. More than half of the sample were male (198, 55.2%) compared to 161 (44.8%) females. The mean scores for knowledge of CPR and attitude toward CPR were 5.74 ± 2.31 out of 10 and 3.94 ± 0.46 out of 5, respectively. Radiographers who received CPR training demonstrated significantly higher mean knowledge scores compared to those who did not receive CPR training (M=6.51±2.14, vs M=4.73±2.14, P<0.001). A correlation was observed between the age and knowledge of CPR (r=0.157, P=0.003), work experience and knowledge of CPR (r=0.177, P<0.001), and knowledge and attitude toward CPR (r=0.326, P<0.001), whereas no statistically significant differences were observed between male and female radiographers' knowledge (P≥0.05) and attitude (P≥0.05) toward CPR.

Conclusion

Radiographers had poor knowledge of CPR. However, there was a positive attitude toward CPR. Previous CPR training and educational level were significantly associated with higher knowledge and positive attitudes toward CPR, whereas radiographers' age and work experience were significantly associated with higher knowledge. Therefore, continuous CPR training is recommended to increase radiographers' knowledge of CPR.

Assessment of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Knowledge Among Physicians in the Pediatrics Department of an Urban Tertiary Referral Hospital in Ethiopia: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background: Early recognition of cardiac arrest and prompt start of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) boost survival rates and reduce postarrest consequences. Little information is available about the fundamental CPR knowledge of healthcare workers who work with children in Ethiopia. Methods: All physicians, regardless of seniority, participated in this cross-sectional survey from June to August 2022. They received a structured survey that was modified from the American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) test which was made up of 10 questions about participants' job experience and 25 multiple-choice CPR knowledge questions. Data analysis was done using a multinomial logistic regression test with a p value of 0.05. Result: One hundred sixty-eight doctors with various levels of seniority participated in this study. The participants included a male-to-female ratio of 1.3:1, a median age of 28 years, 92 (57.9%) male participants, and 124 (78%) participants with less than 5 years of clinical experience. Ninety-seven participants, or 61%, had scored less than 75% whereas 13 (8.2%), participants, had good knowledge that is scoring above 75%. Participants who had training in CPR within the previous year showed significantly higher levels of knowledge than those who hadn't. Even though 90% of the participants claimed to have CPR knowledge, the majority of participants were found not to have below 75%. Conclusion: The study concludes that while many doctors believe they have adequate CPR knowledge, actual knowledge levels are insufficient. Staff should undergo regular certification and assessments to ensure they retain their resuscitation knowledge. This ongoing evaluation is crucial for maintaining high standards of care and preparedness in emergencies.

Knowledge, attitude, practice, and associated factors of health professionals towards cardiopulmonary resuscitation at Ayder Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, 2023, Tigray, Ethiopia

Background

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a crucial medical technique that is performed manually to preserve intact brain function. Early initiation of CPR manoeuvres and activation of the chain of survival are key factors in the prognosis of patients with cardiorespiratory arrest (CRA). Inadequacy in any step of CPR due to a lack of knowledge or skill is associated with a poor return of spontaneous circulation and a decreased survival rate.

Objective

To assess the knowledge, attitude, practice, and factors associated with health towards CPR at Ayder Comprehensive Specialized Hospital 2023.

Methods

Institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice of health professionals towards cardiopulmonary CPR in Ayder Comprehensive Specialized Hospital Of Tigray, Ethiopia from 1 May to 30 August 2023. Data were collected using structured questionnaires by Two BSC anaesthesia staff and One MSc. as supervisor. A stratified random sampling technique was used to select the study participants. The Data were entered and analyzed using SPSS version 23. Variables with P value less than 0.20 were fitted into multivariate logistic regression. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies, median, interquartile range, percentages, tables, graphs and charts were used to present the results.

Result

A total of 262 Of 277 healthcare providers were included in the study, with a response rate of 93.3%. Knowledge, attitude, practice of health professionals towards CPR was 22.5%, 39% and 31.5%, respectively. MSc degree in level of education [adjusted odds ratio (AOR): 8.561 95% CI=2.109-34.746], CPR training (AOR: 2.157, 95%, 1.005, 4.631), and Work experience 6-10years and more than 10 (AOR =0.195, 95% CI, 0.071-0.539) and AOR =0.148 195 95% CI, 0.017, 1.285) were significantly associated with knowledge. The Anaesthetist and Medical doctors were 5.5 times (AOR, 5.50, 95% CI 1.263-23.93) and 2.125 times (AOR: 2.125, 95% CI, 0.865-5.216) respectively more likely to have favourable attitude than the midwives. Regarding to practice participants with CPR training (AOR: 1.804 95% CI=0.925-3.518), good knowledge (AOR: 2.766 95% CI=1.312-5.836) and favourable attitude (AOR: 1.931, 95% CI=0.995-3.749) were significantly associated with safe practice.

Conclusion and recommendation

The overall level of health professionals, knowledge, attitude, practices, and factors associated towards CPR in Ayder Comprehensive Specialized Hospital at Tigray, Ethiopia were insufficient, favourable and safe enough. Regular CPR training is recommended to increase the knowledge, attitude, and practice of healthcare professionals towards CPR.

Out of hospital cardiac arrest: experience of a bystander CPR training program in Karachi, Pakistan

Background

Nearly 90% of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients are witnessed, yet only 2.3% received bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in Pakistan. This study aimed to determine retention of knowledge and skills of Hands-Only CPR among community participants in early recognition of OHCA and initiation of CPR in Karachi, Pakistan.

Methods

Pre and post-tests were conducted among CPR training participants from diverse non-health-related backgrounds from July 2018 to October 2019. Participants were tested for knowledge and skills of CPR before training (pre-test), immediately after training (post-test), and 6 months after training (re-test). All the participants received CPR training through video and scenario-based demonstration using manikins. Post-training CPR skills of the participants were assessed using a pre-defined performance checklist. The facilitator read out numerous case scenarios to the participants, such as drowning, poisoning, and road traffic injuries, etc., and then asked them to perform the critical steps of CPR identified in the scenario on manikins. The primary outcome was the mean difference in the knowledge score and skills of the participants related to the recognition of OHCA and initiation of CPR.

Results

The pre and post-tests were completed by 652 participants, whereas the retention test after 6 months was completed by 322 participants. The mean knowledge score related to the recognition of OHCA, and initiation of CPR improved significantly (p < 0.001) from pre-test [47.8/100, Standard Deviation (SD) ±13.4] to post-test (70.2/100, SD ±12.1). Mean CPR knowledge after 6 months (retention) reduced slightly from (70.2/100, ±12.1) to (66.5/100, ±10.8). CPR skill retention for various components (check for scene safety, check for response, check for breathing and correct placement of the heel of hands) deteriorated significantly (p < 0.001) from 77.9% in the post-test to 72.8% in re-test. Participants performed slightly better on achieving an adequate rate of chest compressions from 73.1% in post-test to 76.7% in re-test (p 0.27).

Conclusion

Community members with non-health backgrounds can learn and retain CPR skills, allowing them to be effective bystander CPR providers in OHCA situations. We recommend mass population training in Pakistan for CPR to increase survival from OHCA.
