Abstract
BACKGROUND Prior observational studies have identified a relationship between the composition of gut microbiota and the onset of acne. To ascertain the causal relationship underlying this association, we adopted the Mendelian randomization (MR) method, which offers a powerful approach to causal inference. METHODS Summary statistics on gut microbiota and acne were obtained from the MiBioGen and FinnGen consortium, respectively. The causal relationship was assessed using multiple methods in a two-sample framework, including MR Egger, weighted median, inverse variance weighted (IVW), and weighted mode. Furthermore, the heterogeneity and horizontal pleiotropy analyses were conducted, along with the leave-one-out method. RESULTS The IVW estimation indicated that Allisonella (odds ratio [OR] = 1.42, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.18-1.70, p = 0.0002) and Bacteroides (OR = 2.25, 95% CI = 1.48-3.42, p = 0.0001) have adverse effects on acne. By contrast, Ruminococcus torques group (OR = 0.41, 95% CI = 0.25-0.65, p = 0.0002) showed a beneficial effect on acne. In addition, Candidatus soleaferrea (OR = 0.75, 95% CI = 0.60-0.95, p = 0.0149), Eubacterium coprostanoligenes group (OR = 0.67, 95% CI = 0.47-0.95, p = 0.0230), Fusicatenibacter (OR = 0.71, 95% CI = 0.52-0.97, p = 0.02897), and Lactobacillus (OR = 0.72, 95% CI = 0.58-0.90, p = 0.0046) showed suggestive associations with acne. CONCLUSION The present investigation suggests a causal effect of gut microbiota on acne.

Abstract
Acne vulgaris is an inflammatory dermatological pathology that affects mostly young people. However, it can also appear in adulthood, mainly in women. It has a high psychosocial impact, not only at the time of active lesions but also due to the consequences of lesions such as scarring and hyperpigmentation. Several factors are involved in the physiopathology of acne and the constant search for active ingredients is a reality, namely phytotherapeutic ingredients. Tea tree oil is an essential oil extracted from Melaleuca alternifolia (Maiden & Betch) Cheel with known antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, making it a candidate for the treatment of acne. This review aims to describe the various properties of tea tree oil that make it a possible ingredient to use in the treatment of acne and to present several human studies that have evaluated the efficacy and safety of using tea tree oil in the treatment of acne. It can be concluded that tea tree oil has good antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties that result in a decrease in the number of inflammatory lesions, mainly papules, and pustules. However, given the diversity of study designs, it is not possible to draw concrete conclusions on the efficacy and safety of this oil in the treatment of acne.

Abstract
AIMS Several studies have linked gut microbes to human diseases. Most of the mechanisms by which lactic acid bacteria have beneficial effects on the human body are related to immune modulation. Controlled studies of the ability of lactic acid bacteria to absorb phosphorus directly from the intestine and thereby control serum phosphorus level in in vivo uremic animal models are limited. MATERIALS AND METHODS We screened lactic acid bacteria living in Korean fermented foods to identify those that absorb the most phosphorus and noted Lactiplantibacillus paraplantarum KCCM 11826P. The mechanism through which better intracellular absorption of phosphorus occurs in this strain was studied using genomic DNA sequencing. After the strain was administered to 5/6 nephrectomized rats for 6 weeks, it was observed whether hyperphosphatemia had improved. KEY FINDINGS The L. paraplantarum KCCM 11826P strain has a polyP gene cluster; thus, it absorbs phosphorus better than other bacteria and can suppress strains that produce indole. Supplementing the diets of 5/6 nephrectomized rats with this L. paraplantarum strain significantly decreased serum phosphate level (by 22 %) and reduced blood indoxyl sulphate concentration (by 40 %) compared with vehicle treatment. SIGNIFICANCE These results suggest that Lactiplantibacillus preparations can be used for multiple purposes, such as the removal of phosphorus and uremic toxins from patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). This study also demonstrates the novel concept of a probiotic phosphate binder.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Probiotics provide benefits for reducing acne. Previous studies showed an anti-inflammatory effect of Lactobacillus paracasei. However, the clinical evidence of topical probiotic lotion and acne treatment is still lacking. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the efficacy and safety of probiotic-derived lotion compared to 2.5 % benzoyl peroxide in the treatment of mild to moderate acne vulgaris. METHODS Topical probiotic-derived lotion was formulated from cell-free supernatant of L. paracasei MSMC 39-1. In vivo study showed the ability of the supernatant to inhibit both antibiotic-resistance and susceptibility strains of C. acnes and inhibit tumor necrosis factor-α. The patients with mild to moderate acne vulgaris on the face were randomized to receive topical probiotic-derived lotion or 2.5 % benzoyl peroxide. Acne lesion counts, erythema index, and side effects were assessed after 2 and 4 weeks of treatment. RESULTS One hundred and four acne vulgaris patients were enrolled. After four weeks of treatment, the inflammatory acne lesion counts and erythema index significantly decreased compared to baseline in both the probiotic lotion group and 2.5 % benzoyl peroxide group (p < 0.001 in both groups) without statistically significant difference between the two groups (p > 0.05). However, the comedones were not affected in both groups. Four patients (7.69%) treated with probiotic-derived lotion and 14 patients (26.92%) treated with 2.5% benzoyl peroxide reported treatment-associated side effects. CONCLUSION Probiotic-derived lotion is safe and effective for treating mild to moderate acne vulgaris, a comparable outcome with 2.5% benzoyl peroxide. It could be an alternative treatment of acne with more minor side effects.

Abstract
Lactobacillus plantarum CJLP55 has anti-pathogenic bacterial and anti-inflammatory activities in vitro. We investigated the dietary effect of CJLP55 supplement in patients with acne vulgaris, a prevalent inflammatory skin condition. Subjects ingested CJLP55 or placebo (n = 14 per group) supplements for 12 weeks in this double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized study. Acne lesion count and grade, skin sebum, hydration, pH and surface lipids were assessed. Metagenomic DNA analysis was performed on urine extracellular vesicles (EV), which indirectly reflect systemic bacterial flora. Compared to the placebo supplement, CJLP55 supplement improved acne lesion count and grade, decreased sebum triglycerides (TG), and increased hydration and ceramide 2, the major ceramide species that maintains the epidermal lipid barrier for hydration. In addition, CJLP55 supplement decreased the prevalence of Proteobacteria and increased Firmicutes, which were correlated with decreased TG, the major skin surface lipid of sebum origin. CJLP55 supplement further decreased the Bacteroidetes:Firmicutes ratio, a relevant marker of bacterial dysbiosis. No differences in skin pH, other skin surface lipids or urine bacterial EV phylum were noted between CJLP55 and placebo supplements. Dietary Lactobacillus plantarum CJLP55 was beneficial to clinical state, skin sebum, and hydration and urine bacterial EV phylum flora in patients with acne vulgaris.
