Evidence for the ‘behavioural character’ hypothesis: does boldness programme disparate antipredator strategies?

Aggression, Boldness, and Exploration Personality Traits in the Subterranean Naked Mole-Rat (Heterocephalus glaber) Disperser Morphs

Animal personality traits (consistent behavioral differences between individuals in their behavior across time and/or situation) affect individual fitness through facets, such as dispersal. In eusocial naked mole-rat (Heterocephalus glaber) colonies, a disperser morph may arise with distinct morphological, behavioral, and physiological characteristics. This study aimed to quantify the personality traits of a cohort of disperser morphs of naked mole-rat (NMR). Behavioral tests were performed on twelve disperser morphs (six males and six females) in an observation tunnel system that was novel and unfamiliar. Novel stimuli (fresh snakeskin, tissue paper, and conspecific of the same sex) were introduced for fifteen minutes, and the behavioral acts of the individual were recorded. A total of 30 behaviors were noted during the behavioral tests of which eight were used to quantify aggression, boldness, and exploration. The NMR disperser morphs showed consistent individual differences in boldness, and exploration across time and test, indicating a distinct personality. In addition, new naked mole-rat responses including disturbance behaviors; confront, barricade, and stay-away, were recorded. Further investigations into the relationships between animal personality traits and social hierarchy position in entire colonies are needed for more informative results as we further investigate the role of personality in cooperatively breeding societies.

Cross-Latitude Behavioural Axis in an Adult Damselfly Calopteryx splendens (Harris, 1780)

Animals adapt to the environment they live in. If the environment changes, animals usually adapt behaviourally as a first response. By studying behavioural profiles across long distances, we can detect environmental change reflected in shifts in behavioural profiles. This study examined variation in three behavioural axes: activity, courtship and boldness, and the association between these behaviours, i.e., behavioural syndromes, across three damselfly populations along a latitudinal gradient (i.e., climatic gradient). Our study organism was the temperate damselfly Calopteryx splendens. We predicted that behavioural expressions would gradually increase from southern to northern regions. This is because northern animals should compensate behaviourally for a brief and cold breeding season (i.e., time constraint). Activity was the only behaviour feature positively associated with latitudinal gradient. Courtship effort was highest in the central region, whereas boldness values were highest in the north but did not differ between central and south. In the southern region, an activity–boldness and a courtship—boldness syndrome were present, and in the northern region, only an activity–boldness syndrome was found. Our results confirm that environmental variability in biotic and abiotic factors across studied latitudes generates regional differences in behavioural profiles, which do not always follow latitudinal gradient.

Abstract

Behavioural variation is important for evolutionary and ecological processes, but can also be useful when predicting consequences of climate change and effects on species ranges. Latitudinal differences in behaviour have received relatively limited research interest when compared to morphological, life history and physiological traits. This study examined differences in expression of three behavioural axes: activity, courtship and boldness, and their correlations, along a European latitudinal gradient spanning ca. 1500 km. The study organism was the temperate damselfly Calopteryx splendens (Harris). We predicted that the expression of both behavioural traits and behavioural syndromes would be positively correlated to latitude, with the lowest values in the southern populations, followed by central and the highest in the north, because animals usually compensate behaviourally for increasing time constraints and declining environmental conditions. We found that behavioural expression varied along the latitudinal cline, although not always in the predicted direction. Activity was the only behaviour that followed our prediction and gradually increased northward. Whereas no south-to-north gradient was seen in any of the behavioural syndromes. The results, particularly for activity, suggest that climatic differences across latitudes change behavioural profiles. However, for other traits such as courtship and boldness, local factors might invoke stronger selection pressures, disrupting the predicted latitudinal pattern.

Linalool induces relaxation of the mantle of golden apple snail (Pomacea canaliculata)

The objective of this study was to evaluate the possible relaxing effect of essential oils (EOs) (Aloysia triphylla and Lippia alba) and phytochemicals (citral and linalool) in the gastropod Pomacea canaliculata. Animals were exposed to compounds at the concentrations range of 25-750 µL L-1. Magnesium chloride (MgCl2, 10-50 g L-1) and control group (ethanol 6.75 mL L-1, highest concentration used for treatment dilution) were also tested. The EOs, citral and MgCl2 had no relaxing effect at the concentrations range tested, and citral caused aversive behavior (closure of the operculum) from 90 μL L-1. Exposure to linalool at 25, 50, 100, 200 and 400 µL L-1 relaxed 28, 76, 88, 96 and 100% of the animals, respectively. The concentrations of 25, 50 and 400 µL L-1 differed statistically from each other, while 100 and 200 µL L-1 were equal to 50 and 400 µL L-1. All animals recovered up to 40 min, except at of 400 µL L-1. Linalool is effective for relaxing P. canaliculata and can be useful in management techniques that require relaxation. However, further studies are needed to certify whether linalool is appropriate for maintaining animal welfare in invasive procedures that require total insensitivity.

Bold Behavior Is Associated with Genes That Regulate Energy Use but Does Not Covary with Body Condition in Food-Restricted Snails

AbstractTheoretical models about the relationship between food restriction and individual differences in risk-taking behavior (i.e., boldness) have led to conflicting predictions: some models predict that food restriction increases boldness, while other models predict that food restriction decreases boldness. This discrepancy may be partially attributable to an underappreciation for animals' complex physiological responses to food restriction. To understand the proximate mechanisms mediating state-dependent boldness, we used freshwater snails (Helisoma trivolvis) to examine the relationships among food availability, body condition, boldness (latency to reemerge from shell and exploration), and mRNA expression of three genes (adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase [AMPK], molluscan insulin-like peptide [MIP], and serotonin receptor [5-HT]) involved in maintaining energy homeostasis during periods of moderate food restriction. Latency to reemerge and exploratory behavior decreased over time, but fed snails were bolder than fasted snails, suggesting that food restriction reduces bold behavior. Although food restriction decreased body condition, there was not a relationship between body condition and latency to reemerge from shell. However, expression of MIP was positively correlated with latency to reemerge from shell. Furthermore, AMPK was positively correlated with MIP and negatively correlated with body condition and 5-HT. Therefore, individual differences in physiological responses to food restriction, not overall body condition per se, appear to be more closely associated with state-dependent bold behavior. Finally, snails that experienced a novel assay environment returned to their initial "shy" behavior, suggesting that habituation to the assay environment may contribute to snails expressing bolder behavior over time.

Behavioral Responses of Wild Rodents to Owl Calls in an Austral Temperate Forest

Growing human populations are challenging scientists to find effective ways to control and mitigate human–wildlife conflict while preserving biodiversity. It has been reported that predator odor and calls can drive away rodents, but little is known about species-specific responses of prey. For these reasons, we compared the behavioral changes of common rodent species inhabiting the Chilean temperate forest (Abrothrix spp., the long-tailed pygmy rice rat Oligoryzomyslongicaudatus and the black rat Rattus rattus) when exposed to two different native predator calls (the austral pygmy owl Glaucidium nana and the rufous-legged owl Strix rufipes) and a control (no predator calls). Our results showed that all rodent species modified their behavior in the presence of predator calls, but the effects were species dependent. These findings point to the need to carefully study target rodent species instead of applying a general control plan for all rodent species.

Abstract

Ecologically based rodent management strategies are arising as a sustainable approach to rodent control, allowing us to preserve biodiversity while safeguarding human economic activities. Despite predator signals being known to generally repel rodents, few field-based studies have compared the behavioral effects of several predators on different prey species, especially in Neotropical ecosystems. Here, we used camera traps to study the behavior of rodent species native to the Chilean temperate forest (Abrothrix spp., long-tailed pygmy rice rat Oligoryzomys longicaudatus) and an introduced rodent (black rat Rattus rattus). Using playbacks of raptor calls, we experimentally exposed rodents to three predation risk treatments: austral pygmy owl calls (Glaucidium nana), rufous-legged owl calls (Strix rufipes) and a control treatment (absence of owl calls). We evaluated the effects of the treatments on the time allocated to three behaviors: feeding time, locomotor activity and vigilance. Moonlight and vegetation cover were also considered in the analyses, as they can modify perceived predation risk. Results showed that predator calls and environmental factors modified prey behavior depending not only on the predator species, but also on the rodent species. Consequently, owl playbacks could be regarded as a promising rodent control tool, knowing that future studies would be critical to deeply understand differences between species in order to select the most effective predator cues.
