Effects of Premating Calcium and Phosphorus Supplementation on Reproduction Efficiency of Grazing Yak Heifers

This study was realized to explore the effects of calcium chloride (CaCl) and monocalcium phosphate (MCP) supplementation on the reproductive efficiency of grazing yak heifers. The body weight, serum markers of bone metabolism, and conception and calving rate of grazing yaks in control group and supplementary feeding groups were compared. The results revealed that supplementation with MCP but not CaCl could significantly improve the reproductive performance, possibly due to the improvement in body weight and bone phosphorus storage providing better estrous physiological conditions for grazing yak heifers. The findings of this study may be helpful and instructional to improve the reproductive efficiency of yaks on the Qinghai Tibet Plateau.

Abstract

Reproductive efficiency is the main factor limiting yak production on the Tibet Plateau. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of supplementation with calcium chloride (CaCl) and monocalcium phosphate (MCP) for 30 days before breeding on body weight (BW) change, serum bone metabolism biomarkers, conception rate, and calving rate of grazing yaks. Ninety 3 year old yak heifers (153.05 ± 6.56 kg BW) were assigned to three treatments (n = 30 per treatment): grazing without supplementation (CONT), grazing plus calcium chloride supplementation (CaCl), and grazing plus monocalcium phosphate supplementation (MCP). Compared with the CONT group, supplementation with CaCl increased the serum concentrations of osteocalcin and decreased the alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels (p < 0.05); supplementation with MCP increased the average daily gain (ADG), serum concentrations of phosphorus (P) and osteocalcin, conception rate, and calving rate (p < 0.05), whereas it decreased the serum concentrations of hydroxyproline, ALP, and calcitonin (p < 0.05). Both CaCl and MCP supplementation had no effect on serum calcium (Ca) concentration. The ADG, conception rate, and calving rate were higher in the MCP group than in the CaCl group (p < 0.05), while the serum concentrations of hydroxyproline and calcitonin were lower (p < 0.05). It could be concluded that premating supplementation with MCP increased the body weight gain and subsequent conception and calving rate of grazing yaks. Supplementation with MCP had a positive effect on body condition and bone metabolism, thus providing a better estrous condition for grazing yak heifers, which could contribute to enhancing reproduction efficiency.

Metabonomic Responses of Grazing Yak to Different Concentrate Supplementations in Cold Season

Supplementation plays an important role in reversing the weight loss of grazing yaks during cold season. However, little is known about the effect of supplementation on the serum metabolites of grazing yaks. The objective of this study was to explore the effects of supplementary feeding on average daily gain (ADG) and serum metabolites with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)-based metabolomics method in growing yaks during cold season on the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau. Twenty 1.5-year-old female yaks (91.38 ± 10.43 kg LW) were evenly divided into three treatment groups and a control group (CON) (n = 5 per group). All the yaks were released to graze during daytime, whereas the yaks in the treatment groups were supplemented with highland barley (HLB), rapeseed meal (RSM), and highland barley plus rapeseed meal (HLB + RSM) at night. The whole experiment lasted for 120 days. Results indicated that the ADG of growing yak heifers was increased by concentrate supplementations, and ADG under HLB and HLB + RSM group was 37.5% higher (p < 0.05) than that with RSM supplementation. Supplementary feeding increased the plasma concentrations of total protein (TP), albumin (ALB), and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) of those in the CON group, and concentrations of BUN were higher in the RSM group than in the HLB and HLB + RSM group. Compared with the CON group, serum levels of glutamine, glycine, β-glucose were lower and that of choline was higher in the HLB group; serum levels of lactate were lower and that of choline, glutamate were higher in the HLB + RSM group. Compared with the HLB + RSM group, serum levels of glycerophosphoryl choline (GPC) and lactate were higher, and those of choline, glutamine, glutamate, leucine, N-acetyaspartate, α-glucose, and β-glucose were lower in the HLB group; serum levels of citrate, GPC and lactate were higher, and those of 3-Hydroxybutyrate, betaine, choline, glutamate, glutamine, N-acetylglycoprotein, N-acetyaspartate, α-glucose, and β-glucose were lower in the RSM group. It could be concluded that concentrate supplementations significantly improved the growth performance of growing yaks and supplementation with HBL or HLB plus RSM was better than RSM during the cold season. Supplementation with HBL or HLB plus RSM affected the serum metabolites of grazing yaks, and both treatments promoted lipid synthesis. Supplementation of yaks with HBL plus RSM could improve energy-supply efficiency, protein and lipid deposition compared with HLB and RSM.

Dynamic Alterations in Yak Rumen Bacteria Community and Metabolome Characteristics in Response to Feed Type

Current knowledge about the relationships between ruminal bacterial communities and metabolite profiles in the yak rumen is limited. This is due to differences in the nutritional and metabolic features between yak and other ordinary cattle combined with difficulties associated with farm-based research and a lack of technical guidance. A comprehensive analysis of the composition and alterations in ruminal metabolites is required to advance the development of modern yak husbandry. In the current study, we characterized the effect of feed type on the ruminal fluid microbiota and metabolites in yak using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes were the predominant bacterial phyla in the yak rumen. At the genus level, the relative abundance of Bacteroidales BS11 gut group, Prevotellaceae UCG-003, Ruminococcaceae UCG-011, Bacteroidales RF16 group and Ruminococcaceae UCG-010 was significantly (P < 0.01) higher in the forage group compared to that in the concentrate group, while the concentrate group harbored higher proportions of Bacteroidales S24-7 group, Ruminococcaceae NK4A214, Succiniclasticum and Ruminococcus 2. Yak rumen metabolomics analysis combined with enrichment analysis revealed that feed type altered the concentrations of ruminal metabolites as well as the metabolic pattern, and significantly (P < 0.01) affected the concentrations of ruminal metabolites involved in protein digestion and absorption (e.g., L-arginine, ornithine, L-threonine, L-proline and β-alanine), purine metabolism (e.g., xanthine, hypoxanthine, deoxyadenosine and deoxyadenosine monophosphate) and fatty acid biosynthesis (e.g., stearic acid, myristic acid and arachidonic acid). Correlation analysis of the association of microorganisms with metabolite features provides us with a comprehensive understanding of the composition and function of microbial communities. Associations between utilization or production were widely identified between affected microbiota and certain metabolites, and these findings will contribute to the direction of future research in yak.

Effect of weaning strategy on performance, behaviour and blood parameters of yak calves (Poephagus grunniens)

Early weaning can improve the body condition and reproductive performance of cows, but can be very stressful to both the calf and cow. The objectives of this study were to examine and compare the performance, behaviour and blood parameters of yak calves that were weaned using different methods. Twenty-six calves (94.3 ± 2.4 days old) were assigned to four weaning treatments: (1) weaned naturally following ad libitum sucking (NW, n = 13); (2) weaned abruptly and separated permanently from their mothers (AW, n = 5); (3) separated temporarily from their mothers for 15 days and then reunited (TW, n = 5); and (4) fitted with nose plates to prevent sucking for 15 days but allowed free access to their mothers (NP, n = 3). Girth size, as a measure of calf performance, was largest in NW and AW calves, intermediate in NP calves and smallest in TW calves. This indicated that the AW calves were able to consume adequate energy to compensate for the absence of milk. The weaned calves (TW and NP) spent more time grazing and, in general, played less than NW calves. In addition, TW calves stood more but walked less, whereas NP calves lay more but grazed and stood less than NW calves. Blood insulin was lower on Day 19 in the TW calves than in the other three treatments. We concluded that abrupt and permanent weaning was an appropriate strategy for yak calves on the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau.
