Abstract
The environment is changing rapidly, and considerable research is aimed at understanding the capacity of organisms to respond. Changes in environmental temperature are particularly concerning as most animals are ectothermic, with temperature considered a key factor governing their ecology, biogeography, behaviour and physiology. The ability of ectotherms to persist in an increasingly warm, variable, and unpredictable future will depend on their nutritional status. Nutritional resources (e.g. food availability, quality, options) vary across space and time and in response to environmental change, but animals also have the capacity to alter how much they eat and what they eat, which may help them improve their performance under climate change. In this review, we discuss the state of knowledge in the intersection between animal nutrition and temperature. We take a mechanistic approach to describe nutrients (i.e. broad macronutrients, specific lipids, and micronutrients) that may impact thermal performance and discuss what is currently known about their role in ectotherm thermal plasticity, thermoregulatory behaviour, diet preference, and thermal tolerance. We finish by describing how this topic can inform ectotherm biogeography, behaviour, and aquaculture research.

Abstract
Thermal acclimation is a key process enabling ectotherms to cope with temperature change. To undergo a successful acclimation response, ectotherms require energy and nutritional building blocks obtained from their diet. However, diet is often overlooked as a factor that can alter acclimation responses. Using a temperate omnivorous fish, opaleye (Girella nigricans), as a model system, we tested the hypotheses that (1) diet can impact the magnitude of thermal acclimation responses and (2) traits vary in their sensitivity to both temperature acclimation and diet. We fed opaleye a simple omnivorous diet (ad libitum Artemia sp. and Ulva sp.) or a carnivorous diet (ad libitum Artemia sp.) at two ecologically relevant temperatures (12 and 20°C) and measured a suite of whole-animal (growth, sprint speed, metabolism), organ (cardiac thermal tolerance) and cellular-level traits (oxidative stress, glycolytic capacity). When opaleye were offered two diet options compared with one, they had reduced cardiovascular thermal performance and higher standard metabolic rate under conditions representative of the maximal seasonal temperature the population experiences (20°C). Further, sprint speed and absolute aerobic scope were insensitive to diet and temperature, while growth was highly sensitive to temperature but not diet, and standard metabolic rate and maximum heart rate were sensitive to both diet and temperature. Our results reveal that diet influences thermal performance in trait-specific ways, which could create diet trade-offs for generalist ectotherms living in thermally variable environments. Ectotherms that alter their diet may be able to regulate their performance at different environmental temperatures.

Dietary organic selenium improves growth, serum biochemical indices, immune responses, antioxidative capacity, and modulates transcription of stress-related genes in Nile tilapia reared under sub-optimal temperature. Abstract
A 56-day feeding experiment was carried out to investigate the influences of dietary organic selenium (OS) on the growth, body composition, serum biochemistry, stress responses, and immune indices of Nile tilapia reared under sub-optimal temperature. Fish (5.61 ± 0.5 g) were allotted in seven experimental groups (5 replicates per each) and fed on a basal diet supplemented with 0.0 (CTR), 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, and 0.6 mg OS/kg diet and reared under temperature ranged 21.50 ± 0.50 °C. Final body weight, weight gain, and specific growth rate were significantly increased in OS groups compared to the CTR group. Moreover, the feed conversion ratio was significantly decreased in OS groups, especially at fish groups fed 0.3-0.6 mg OS/kg diet compared to the other groups. The lowest survival rate (%) was found in OS groups between 0.0 and 0.2 mg/kg diet. A significant increase in the crude protein (%) and dry matter (%) in OS groups alongside a significant decrease in the ash (%) compared to the CTR group. Blood proteins (total protein, albumin, and globulin), reduced glutathione, immunoglobulin M, and complement C3 values alongside the serum lysozyme and catalase activities were significantly increased compared to the CTR group. Contrarywise, serum transaminases (alanine transaminase and aspartate transaminase), cortisol, urea, and creatinine values were significantly decreased in OS groups than the CTR group. No significant differences were noticed in the mRNA transcripts of the hepatic heat shock protein 70 among all experimental groups. Meanwhile, significant differences were observed in the mRNA transcripts of hepatic heat shock protein 27, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase genes among all experimental groups. The second order polynomial regressions illustrated that the optimal inclusion OS level in diets for Nile tilapia reared under sub-optimal temperature is 0.36-0.39 mg/kg diet based on weight gain and cortisol levels, respectively. Conclusively, the present study exemplified that dietary inclusion with 0.36-0.39 mg OS/kg diet improved the growth, immunity and modulate the stress responses in Nile tilapia reared under sub-optimal temperature.

Abstract
As global warming and environmental pollution modify aquatic environments, the thermal biology of fish could be affected by interactions between temperature and pollutants, such as selenium (Se). Therefore, selenomethionine (SeMet) was studied for effects on cell viability and on heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) levels in the rainbow trout intestinal epithelial cell, RTgutGC, at hypothermic (4 °C), normothermic (14 and 18 °C) and hyperthermic (26 °C) temperatures. RTgutGC cultures remained viable for at least a week at all temperatures, although energy metabolism as measured with Alamar Blue (resazurin) was appreciably diminished at 4 °C. Over a 7-day incubation, HSP 70 levels in cultures remained steady at 4 °C, declined at 18 °C, and increased slightly at 26 °C. When 125 μM SeMet was present, cultures remained viable and HSP70 levels were neither increased nor decreased relative to control cultures, regardless of the temperature. With 500 and 1000 μM SeMet, cell viability was profoundly impaired after 7 days in cultures at 14, 18 and 26 °C but was unchanged at 4 °C. Overall the results suggest that only hypothermia modulated the response of rainbow trout cells to SeMet.

Abstract
Substituting fishmeal (FM) with vegetable meal (VM) can markedly affect the mineral composition of feeds, and may require additional mineral supplementation. Their bioavailability and optimal supplementation levels depend also on the form of delivery of minerals. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of different delivery forms of three major trace elements (Zn, Mn and Se) in a marine teleost. Gilthead sea bream juveniles of 22.5 g were fed a VM-based diet for 12 weeks that was either not supplemented with these minerals or supplemented with inorganic, organic, or encapsulated inorganic forms of minerals in triplicate and compared to a FM-based diet. Our results showed that mineral delivery form significantly affected the biochemical composition and morphology of posterior vertebrae. Supplementation of VM-based diets with inorganic forms of the target minerals significantly promoted growth, increased the vertebral weight and content of ash and Zn, enhanced bone mineralization and affected the vertebral shape. Conversely, encapsulation of inorganic minerals reduced fish growth and vertebral mineral content, whereas supplementation of organic minerals, enhanced bone osteogenesis by upregulating bone morphogenetic protein 2 (bmp2) gene and produced vertebrae with a larger length in relation to height. Furthermore, organic mineral forms of delivery downregulated the expression of oxidative stress related genes, such as Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn sod) and glutathione peroxidase 1 (gpx-1), suggesting thus that dietary minerals supplemented in the organic form could be reasonably considered more effective than the inorganic and encapsulated forms of supply.

Abstract
Selenium is an essential nutrient for all living organisms. Under appropriate conditions lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are capable for accumulating large amounts of trace elements, such as selenium, and incorporating them into organic compounds. In this study, the capacity of selenium bioaccumulation by Enterococcus durans LAB18s was evaluated. The distribution of organic selenium in selenium-enriched E. durans LAB18s biomass was analyzed, and the highest percentage of organic selenium was found in the fraction of total protein, followed by the fractions of polysaccharides and nucleic acids. When the protein fraction was obtained by different extractions (water, NaCl, ethanol and NaOH) it was demonstrated that alkali-soluble protein showed the higher Selenium content. Analysis of protein fractions by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) revealed that selenium was present in the proteins ranging from 23 to 100kDa. The cells were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM); scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM/EDS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). SEM, TEM and SEM/EDS showed the morphology, the selenium particles bioaccumulated into and on the cells and the amounts of selenium present into the cells, respectively. Thus, the isolate E. durans LAB18s can be a promising probiotic to be used as selenium-enriched biomass in feed trials.
