Abstract
The most common and efficient iron supply to prevent neonatal anaemia in piglets is the injection of iron dextran or gleptoferron. This treatment is problematic in organic farms because organic specifications strictly limit the use of chemically synthesised allopathic drugs. Based on the observation that piglets raised outdoors rarely develop anaemia, we hypothesised that piglets satisfy their iron needs by ingesting soil from their environment. Therefore, we compared the efficacy of a 100-mg intramuscular iron dextran injection (Iron, 8 litters, n = 98 piglets) at 4 days (d) of age (d4), to a daily ad libitum supply of dried soil (Soil, 8 litters, n = 101) or dried peat-like river silt (Peat, 8 litters, n = 102) from d4 to weaning (at 49 days of age, d49). Pigs were raised according to organic farming rules. Blood was collected on three males and three females per litter on d4, 20, 41, 50 and 69. BW was similar in the three groups on d4, 20, 41, 50 and 69 (P > 0.1). During the experiment, piglets were affected by a severe digestive E. coli episode but litter mortality rate between d4 and d69 did not differ between groups (P > 0.1). Blood haemoglobin concentration (Hb) was similar in all groups on d4, 50 and 69. However, on d20, Hb was higher in Peat and Iron groups than in the Soil group (P < 0.001), and on d41 and d50, Hb was higher in the Peat group than in Iron and Soil groups (P < 0.001). Mean red blood cell volume (RBCV) remained stable over time in the Peat group. In comparison, RBCV dropped in the Soil group on d20 and d41 (P < 0.001), and in the Iron group on d41 (P < 0.001). Soil and Iron group RBCV returned values similar to the Peat group by d69 (P > 0.1). In conclusion, soil supply in the pen was not sufficient to ensure a satisfactory iron intake in piglets, unlike peat-like river silt, which enable to reach haemoglobin concentrations above 80 mg/mL for over 90% of the piglets from d20 and, over 100% of piglets at weaning. The daily supply of the silt proved more efficient than the 100-mg iron injection beyond 20 days.

Abstract
External factors can affect reproductive traits of breeding boars and especially the sensitive process of spermatogenesis. The aim of this study was to investigate probable influences of bedding materials (chipsy wood shavings (CWS), hemp straw (HS), linen straw (LS), spelt husks (SH), and regional wood shavings (RWS)) on semen traits of 40 randomly selected Piétrain boars (8 boars per group, age: 2.35 ± 1.23 years). After a six-week adaptation period, 40 fresh semen samples were collected weekly for four weeks and diluted in BTS (4 consecutive ejaculates per boar, 32 samples per group, 160 samples in total). Semen samples were analyzed using an extended range of spermatological methods (e.g., computer-assisted sperm analysis and flow cytometry). Generalized linear mixed models for each sperm parameter as well as the area under the curve for total sperm motility and thermo-resistance test were calculated. Materials LS and SH exceeded the standard maximum level for pesticide residues (VO (EG) No. 396/2005). Materials HS and LS presented the highest water-binding capacity of 413 % and 357 %, respectively, while SH showed the lowest value of 250 %. There were no significant (P > 0.05) differences between groups in any sperm characteristic, therefore indicating that bedding material had no influence on sperm quality. For most semen traits, however, we found significant (P ≤ 0.001) differences between sampling weeks. Based on pesticide results, we suggest CWS, RWS, or HS as possible bedding materials for pig production farms in the future. Furthermore, we strongly recommend a quality analysis of any new bedding material before use in swine husbandry.

Abstract
A novel multifunctional fluorescent probe LL2 was prepared via a one-step condensation reaction between 3-formyl-N-butylcarbazole and 2-Hydroxy-1-naphthylhydrazone. LL2 can work as a colorimetric probe for Cu2+, and can also selectively recognize Cu2+ via ratiometric fluorescence signal. After the addition of Cu2+, the probe LL2 responded rapidly within 5 s and reached stability within 30 s. In natural light, when Cu2+ were added to the solution, the color of probe LL2 changed from yellowish to colorless, while there was a discernible fluorescence changed from green to blue under a 365 nm UV lamp. The ratiometric fluorescence intensity (F449/F510) showed a good linear relationship (R2 = 0.9902) with Cu2+ concentration in the concentration range of 0-5 μmol/L, and the minimum detection limit was 1.96 μM. Cell imaging experiments showed that LL2 could capture fluorescence signals in the green and blue channels of HepG2 cells through fluorescence confocal microscope, and successfully recognize exogenous Cu2+ in HepG2 cells. In addition, fluorescence co-localization experiments showed that LL2 could target both lipid droplets and lysosomes. Meanwhile, LL2 could be applied to filter paper strip assay and detection of Cu2+ in actual water samples. These results indicated that probe LL2 has a good capability for monitoring Cu2+ in environment and living cells.

Abstract
Manure from bovine farms is commonly used as an organic fertiliser. However, if not properly managed, it can spread significant biological and chemical hazards, threatening both human and animal health. The effectiveness of risk control hugely relies on farmers' knowledge regarding safe manure management and on the application of suitable management practices. This study aims to evaluate the knowledge and practices of Cypriot bovine farmers towards safer manure management, from its generation to its final use, in line with the One Health approach. Factors affecting farmers' knowledge and applied practices are also investigated through a questionnaire survey. The questionnaire was developed and sent to all eligible bovine farmers in Cyprus (n = 353), and 30% (n = 105) of them returned the completed questionnaire. Results revealed there are some gaps in farmers' knowledge. The use of manure for fertilising crops dominated. Only half of the farmers stored manure in appropriate facilities, with 28.5% of them using a dedicated area with cement floors and 21.5% utilising leakproof tanks. The majority (65.7%) stored manure for more than three months before its use as a fertiliser in a dried form. In multiple regression analysis, education level and farming purpose were significant determinants of farmer knowledge. In conclusion, Cypriot farmers' knowledge must be reinforced to ensure proper manure management. The results highlight the importance of providing relevant training to farmers. Although the current practices partially decrease manure pathogens, interventions to promote the use of more effective treatment methods, such as biogas transformation and composting, would be beneficial.

Abstract
Background Domestic pigs have an evolutionary conserved exploratory behaviour. To comply with this requirement, the European Union aims at setting standards for appropriate enrichment materials for pigs (Council Directive 2008/120/EC). As recommended characteristics include ‘chewable’ and ‘edible’, pigs might also consume these materials (Commission Recommendation (EU) 2016/336), which are often additionally advertised to enhance lying comfort and hygienic conditions in stables. To date, a wide range of bedding, enrichment and disinfectant materials is available on the market to ensure environmental enrichment, a dry, hygienic environment or lying comfort. Previous studies revealed considerable amounts of undesirable substances in some of these materials possibly being a risk for food safety considering oral uptake by the animal. To determine interest and indicators for consumption of different types of materials by pigs during exploratory behaviour, a camera-assisted observational study with 12 female pigs (German Landrace) was conducted. We tested their preference for a disinfectant powder, peat, biochar and straw as reference material in a 4 × 6 factorial arrangement. Results Pigs manipulated and consumed all offered materials. However, longest manipulation time per pig was observed for biochar (63 min/day) and peat (50 min/day) (p < 0.05). Analyses of the bulk molecular-chemical composition and n-alkanes and acid insoluble ash as markers in the materials and in faeces clearly revealed the consumption of these materials by pigs. Conclusions Whether the consumption of considerable amounts together with certain levels of undesirable substances represents a risk for pig and consumer health could yet not be established. Future studies will address the quantitative contribution of undesirable substances by oral ingestion of bedding and enrichment materials and disinfectant powders to the daily feed ration.
