Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the reliability of corpus luteum and dominant follicles, imaging parameters on the plasma progesterone, and prediction of pregnancy in cows. In total, 48 cows were used in this study and underwent Ovsynch program. Ultrasound imaging of the ovaries was done at the time of PG shots. Corpus luteum diameter (CL_d), area (CL_area), volume (CL_vol), and pixels (CL_PXL), as well as dominant follicle diameter (F_d) and area (F_area), were estimated using the ImageJ program. Blood samples were taken to assess progesterone (P4) concentrations. Pregnancy status was determined at 32 ± 3 days after insemination using an ultrasound "Sonoscape-5 V." Data were analysed using correlation analysis and ROC curves. Plasma P4 concentration showed positive correlation with CL_d (r = .68, p < .01), CL_area (r = .45, p < .01), CL_volume (r = .41, p < .01), and CL_pixels (r = .67, p < .01). The ROC curve indicated that P4 concentrations and CL parameters, especially the CL_pixels, were the best predictors of the pregnancy, among the others that were able to detect pregnancy at the time of PG with the best P4 and CL_pixels cut-off value (4.1 ng/mL and 43.18) and AUC was (0.95 and 0.89); resp. (p < .001). Regarding the other parameters, it was possible to set AUC 0.79, 0.79, and 0.68 for CL_d, area, and volume with a sensitivity of 66.7%, 70.8%, and 66.7% and a specificity of 88.2%, 82.4%, and 70.4% (p < .01), respectively. The AUC for both the follicular diameter and F_area was (0.56) with a sensitivity of 58.33% and 70.8% and a specificity of 62.5% and 50% (p > .05), respectively. In conclusion, CL measurements and progesterone concentrations had the greatest pregnancy prediction in Holstein dairy cows.

Abstract
Progesterone is pivotal to maintain pregnancy in the first trimester and low concentrations (<4 ng/mL) have been associated with early pregnancy loss. Measurement of progesterone is widely used in practice to determine whether a mare needs progestin supplementation. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to determine progesterone concentrations and the luteal tissue area in mares non-bred, and those bred becoming pregnant, and those failing to become pregnant. We hypothesized that pregnant mares have greater progesterone concentrations than non-pregnant mares. Fifty-two cycles of mares (n=14) were monitored by ultrasonography every other day until detection of a preovulatory follicle. Then deslorelin acetate was administered to induce ovulation. Twenty-four hours later, mares were bred (∼2 billion progressively motile sperm extended in 50 mL; n=37 cycles) or a sham-bred (50 mL of extender; n=15 cycles). Ovulation was confirmed and number of corpora lutea and the luteal tissue area were recorded daily until 10d post-ovulation. Progesterone concentrations were assessed daily from the day of the ovulation up to 10d post-ovulation. Pregnancy diagnosis was carried out at 10d and 13d post-ovulation. Of the bred mares, 20 of them became pregnant and 17 did not. Data were analyzed with a mixed model, Tukey test as post-hoc, and Pearson's coefficient of correlation. Progesterone concentrations and luteal tissue area varied with time (P=0.001) but not with group (P>0.05). Multiple ovulations were associated with greater progesterone concentrations and luteal tissue area (P=0.0001). There was a moderate positive association between the number of ovulations and luteal tissue area (r=0.54; P=0.0001). The lack of change in the progesterone concentration and luteal tissue area between bred and non-bred mares suggests that horse seminal plasma does not affect luteal function in mares. As all mares had progesterone above 4 ng/mL after 5d post-ovulation; it is possible that if mares with abnormal progesterone concentrations were used, the results could have been different. In conclusion, pregnancy was not associated with greater progesterone concentrations or luteal tissue area.

Abstract
Doppler ultrasonographic (US) is a method that provides real-time information on vascular architecture and hemodynamic aspects of blood vessels. It can determine the presence, direction, and speed of blood flow, being subdivided into the categories of color Doppler (color flow and power flow) and pulsed Doppler. The objective of this chapter was to compile data from several studies addressing the use of US Doppler correlated with pathophysiological phenomena of equine reproduction. Initially we decided to describe the technique, advantages, and disadvantages of each Doppler mode. Then the applicability of US Doppler in mares related to equine reproduction. Thus, within this chapter, you will find the form of use and descriptions of studies carried out on vascular perfusion of the follicular dynamics, the corpus luteum, the uterine segments, which we have divided into post-insemination evaluation, endometritis diagnosis and pregnancy diagnosis. So, we hope that this chapter will expand the knowledge about US Doppler and increase the number of veterinarians who will introduce the technique into their practical routine.

Abstract
Among female livestock, the mare has the shortest interval from parturition to first ovulation. Due to the scarcity of research on postpartum mares, little progress has been made on the characterization of the resumption of ovarian cyclicity after parturition. This study compared follicular and gonadotropin dynamics during follicle emergence and deviation in postpartum lactating (PP Lactating) versus non-postpartum cycling (N-PP Cycling) mares. On the day of parturition, every PP Lactating mare was paired with a N-PP Cycling mare. Comparisons were made by considering the partum-ovulation interval and the postpartum interovulatory interval for the PP Lactating mares, and two interovulatory intervals for the N-PP Cycling mares. The results presented herein demonstrate that during the postpartum period, lactating mares have some similarities in follicular and hormonal profiles around emergence and deviation when compared with non-postpartum cycling mares. However, some peculiar and important characteristics were noticed during the postpartum period in lactating mares: (1) The emergence of the DF occurs around the day of parturition; (2) follicle deviation in the ovulatory wave occurs earlier during the foal heat than in other intervals; (3) lower FSH and LH systemic concentrations were not detrimental enough to prevent the rapid resumption of ovarian activity just after parturition; and (4) the association between parturition and season can have an additional and confounding effect during postpartum ovarian activity in mares. The novel findings of this study provide better knowledge of the resumption of ovarian activity after parturition and may help provide insight into the reproductive management of this species.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to compare the dominant follicle (DF) and gonadotropin dynamics for 9 days before ovulation in postpartum lactating (PP Lactating) versus non-postpartum cycling (N-PP Cycling) mares. Every PP Lactating mare on the day of parturition was paired with a N-PP Cycling mare, and the data analyses considered the partum-ovulation interval (POI) and the postpartum interovulatory interval (PPIOI) in PP Lactating mares and two interovulatory intervals in N-PP Cycling mares. The results of the present study revealed several novel and unique aspects of DF development and FSH and LH dynamics before ovulation in PP Lactating mares when compared with N-PP Cycling mares. The most remarkable differences between both groups of mares were the following: (1) a shorter interval to ovulation in PP Lactating mares during the foal heat (POI ≤22 days) compared with all other intervals; (2) a larger DF in PP Lactating mares, and an earlier day of DF at maximum diameter during the foal heat; and (3) lower gonadotropin levels in PP Lactating mares. Regarding the particularities, PP Lactating mares had lower LH levels during the POI than the PPIOI, demonstrating a strong partum effect; spring-foaled mares had longer POIs, larger DF diameters, and lower LH levels; and lower body condition scores and higher body-weight loss led to longer POIs and smaller DF diameters in PP Lactating mares. This study contributes to a broad understanding of ovarian function in the postpartum mare.

Abstract
Simple Summary An understanding of the basic mechanisms of reproduction in donkeys is essential, for several reasons. Some donkey breeds are threatened or endangered, and efforts to save these species depend on improved knowledge of reproductive processes. In some parts of the world, donkeys continue to be valued for purposes of work, recreation, or even meat or milk production, as well as the breeding of mules, and reproduction is essential to maintain suitable populations. In others, donkey populations have become feral and represent a nuisance or even a danger to human populations, and improved contraceptive methods are required. Whether for enhancing or inhibiting reproduction, species-specific information is valuable. While the mare has been extensively studied, few studies have explored early pregnancy in jennies. Therefore, this study characterized early embryo development and differences in progesterone profile and changes in the corpus luteum between pregnant and non-pregnant jennies. Abstract We aimed to characterize early embryo development and changes in corpus luteum (CL) development and progesterone profile in pregnant vs. non-pregnant jennies. Eight jennies were enrolled in the study. In the first two cycles, the jennies were monitored by transrectal ultrasonography and had blood harvested for hormone profile assay. In the third cycle, jennies were bred by a jack of proven fertility. Jennies were then monitored and sampled for up to 30 days of pregnancy. Data were evaluated by random-effects multiple linear regression, and correlations were expressed as Pearson’s correlation coefficient. Progesterone concentration rose rapidly from ovulation (D0) until D7, plateaued until D12–14, then precipitously declined between D14 and 15, remaining low until the next ovulation in non-pregnant cycles. In the pregnant jennies, the progesterone concentration rose to maximal concentrations on D7–11, being higher at this stage than in non-pregnant cycles, then declined gradually up to D30. In all cycles, the volume of the CL increased steadily until D6, when it plateaued in pregnant jennies. For non-pregnant jennies, CL volume decreased slowly from D6 to D11 and then had a faster drop. Uterine tone increased following ovulation, becoming turgid around the day of embryo fixation (D15.0 ± 0.9). An embryonic vesicle (EV) was first detected on D9.3 ± 0.5 (2.4 ± 0.5 mm). The EV remained spherical until D18.6 ± 1.4. The embryo proper was first detected ventrally in the vesicle on D20.8 ± 1.1 and the embryonic heartbeat by D22.0 ± 0.9. The allantoic sac was identified at D24.0 ± 0.9, and at D30, the allantoic sac filled the ventral half of the EV. This study provides evidence that higher cumulative concentrations of progesterone are correlated to size of the EV, and there were changes in the luteal dynamics and progesterone profiles in pregnant vs. non-pregnant jennies.

Abstract
Ovulatory follicle development and associated oocyte maturation involve complex coordinated molecular and cellular mechanisms not yet fully understood. This study addresses the relationships among follicle diameter, follicle wall blood flow, follicular-fluid factors, and gene expression for follicle growth, steroidogenesis, angiogenesis, and apoptosis in granulosa/cumulus cells and oocytes during different stages from the beginning of largest/ovulatory follicle to impending ovulation in mares. The most remarkable findings were (i) a positive association between follicle development, follicle blood flow, intrafollicular follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), estradiol, progesterone, and messenger RNA (mRNA) expression for FSHR and LHCGR in granulosa cells of the largest/ovulatory follicle; (ii) a plateau or decrease in follicle diameter and blood flow and granulosa cell mRNA for FSHR, LHCGR, IGF1R, VEGFR2, CYP19A1, and CASP3 at the preovulatory stage; (iii) higher StAR and BCL2 and lower CASP3 mRNA in granulosa cells at the time of impending ovulation; (iv) greater IGF1R mRNA for granulosa cells at the predeviation stage; and (v) lower FSHR, LHCGR, IGF1R, and VEGFR2 mRNA in cumulus cells and greater LHCGR and IGF1R mRNA in oocytes at the ovulatory stage. This study is a critical advance in the understanding of molecular mechanisms of follicle development and oocyte maturation and is expected to be vital for future studies targeting potential markers.

Abstract
This comparative study between postpartum lactating (PP Lactating) and non-postpartum cycling (N-PP Cycling) mares aimed to characterize reproductive patterns, types and frequencies of follicular waves, corpus luteum and endometrial echotexture dynamics, and the influence of season and body condition. Mares from each group were paired considering the day of parturition of a PP Lactating mare. The partum-ovulation interval (POI) and the postpartum interovulatory interval (PPIOI) were evaluated for PP Lactating mares, and 2 IOIs were evaluated for N-PP Cycling mares. The following observations were made: (i) PP Lactating mares have several different reproductive patterns, such as continuous reproductive activity (i.e., short or long POIs followed by a PPIOI), ovarian inactivity after the first postpartum ovulation, or continuous ovarian inactivity (postpartum anestrous phase); (ii) a greater total number of minor waves was seen in PP Lactating mares; (iii) major primary follicular waves (i.e., ovulatory) emerge around the day of parturition in mares with short POIs; (iv) the season of parturition (spring season), decrease in body condition score, and body-weight loss can have an associated detrimental effect in PP Lactating mares by increasing the total number of minor follicular waves and, consequently, the POI length; (v) endometrial echotexture scores are higher during the POI and can be influenced by the season of parturition; and (vi) corpus luteum development and demise are similar between PP Lactating and N-PP Cycling mares. This study provides, for the first time, detailed information about reproductive physiological aspects during the postpartum period and may facilitate the interpretation of gynecological practices during the foal heat and subsequent IOI in mares.

The Combination of hCG and GnRH Analog to Hasten Ovulation in Mares Does not Change Luteal Function and Pregnancy Outcome in Embryo Recipient Mares. J Equine Vet Sci 2021; 105:103691. Abstract
Equine practitioners often prescribe the combined use of hCG and GnRH to hasten ovulation due to presumed synergistic effects. Therefore, this study aimed to test whether the combination of hCG and deslorelin acetate to hasten ovulation in mares would show any effect in inducing ovulation more efficiently than when either drug is used by itself, and to verify whether this association would affect progesterone concentrations; corpus luteum (CL) diameter and blood flow; and pregnancy outcome in recipient mares after embryo transfer (ET). Seventeen mares had the ovulation hastened (≥35 mm follicle) as follow: Control, 1 mL of 0.9% NaCl solution; GnRH, 1 mg of deslorelin acetate; hCG, 1,500 IU of hCG; hCG+GnRH, 1mg of deslorelin acetate and 1,500 IU of hCG. CL diameter and blood flow, and serum progesterone concentrations were assessed between the day of ovulation induction and sixteen days after ovulation. In addition, data of 194 ET were retrospectively analyzed. Pregnancy rates at five days after ET and pregnancy loss up to 60 days of recipient mares with natural ovulation (Control, n=37), or with ovulation hastened with hCG (n=25), or deslorelin acetate (n=46), or the combination of these hormones (n=86), as described above, were assessed. The control group had a higher progesterone concentration on the day of ovulation than the GnRH group (P < .05). However, there were no differences in CL diameter and blood flow at any time point, as well as in progesterone concentration over time (P > .05). Pregnancy rates and pregnancy loss didn't differ between recipient mares treated or not with hormones. In conclusion, the combination of hCG and deslorelin acetate to hasten ovulation was not able to change luteal development, progesterone concentration, or pregnancy outcome in recipient mares after ET.

Abstract
Simple Summary Power Doppler is a non-invasive imaging technique that allows complete monitoring of the ovary changes in cycling mares. We use Power Doppler to investigate differences in follicular diameter and corpus luteum area as well as in follicular and corpus luteum blood flows between young and mature Spanish Purebred mares. Young mares had higher follicular and corpus luteum blood flows as well as higher blood progesterone levels. Moreover, we found that blood progesterone levels could be predicted in both groups from corpus luteum blood flow with moderate precision and accuracy. These results support the usefulness of Power Doppler to monitor ovarian hemodynamics and the suitability of corpus luteum blood flow to estimate blood progesterone levels in cycling mares. Abstract In equine reproduction, accurate and timely detection of the moment of ovulation is of great importance. Power Doppler ultrasound technology is a non-invasive method that enables to assess the morpho-echogenic features and blood flow changes during the estral cycle in mares. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the influence of age on ultrasonographic parameters (follicular diameter, follicular blood flow—FBF, corpus luteum (CL) area and corpus luteum blood flow—CLBF) and blood plasma progesterone concentrations in cycling Spanish Purebred mares (15 less than 8 years old and 15 equal o higher than 8 years old). The ultrasound images obtained were analyzed with the Image Colour Summarizer software, which allows the quantification of the pixels of each image. Young mares had significantly higher FBF, CLBF and plasma progesterone levels. Moreover, linear regression analysis showed that blood progesterone levels could be predicted in both groups from CLBF with moderate precision and accuracy. In conclusion, Power Doppler was useful to assess ovarian hemodynamics. Our results support that age is a factor that significantly influences FBF and CLBF as well as blood progesterone concentration in mares. More studies would be needed to develop high precision and accuracy predictive models of blood progesterone concentration from CLBF measured by Power Doppler.

Correlations of corpus luteum blood flow with fertility and progesterone in embryo recipient mares. Trop Anim Health Prod 2021; 53:280. Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between the corpus luteum vascularization with the concentration of progesterone and the fertility of embryo recipient mares. Mangalarga Marchador mares (n = 33) were distributed into groups according to the days (D) after ovulation, as follows: D3 (n = 8), D4 (n = 8), D5 (n = 9), and D6 (n = 8). The evaluations of the corpus luteum, endometrium, and blood collection to quantify the progesterone concentration were carried out on D3, D4, D5, and D6. Among the parameters evaluated, only progesterone concentration on D6 differed from the other groups (P <0.05). A positive correlation (P <0.05) between the diameter and the area of the corpus luteum, and the objective and subjective methods of the corpus luteum vascular perfusion, was identified. Likewise, a positive correlation (P <0.05) was observed between the objective and subjective methods of the vascular perfusion in the corpus luteum and the progesterone concentration. The pregnancy rate obtained in this study (54.54%) was not affected (P> 0.05) by the day of embryo transfer, whose percentages were 37.50% (3/8) on D3, 50% (4/8) on D4, 66.70% (6/9) on D5, and 62.50% (5/8) on D6. It was estimated that with each increase on the day of embryo transfer, the pregnancy rate increases. The results allow to conclude that the corpus luteum vascularization in mares, evaluated by Doppler ultrasound, correlates with progesterone concentration and the embryo transfer day.

Abstract
Background and Aim Flushing with the manipulation of fatty acids, particularly polyunsaturated fatty acids, like linoleic and α-linolenic acids in the ration, is a strategy to raise the nutritional status of the female mammals to improve ovarian function and follicle development. This study was designed to investigate the effectiveness of flushing supplementation with different types of polyunsaturated and saturated fatty acids in stimulating follicle growth and development during estrus in Ettawa Grade does with a low initial body condition score (BCS ≤2). Materials and Methods Eighteen Ettawa Grade does in the second parity, with an average body weight of 32.11±2.19 kg, were divided into three groups according to the fatty acid supplemented to their ration: (i) About 2.8% lauric acid flushing (group); (ii) 2.8% linoleic acid flushing (LA group); and (iii) 2.8% α-linolenic acid flushing (ALA group). The ration was formulated to be isocaloric (total digestible nutrient = 77%) and isonitrogenous (crude protein = 15%). The experiment was conducted for 35 days; that is, 14 days for acclimatization and synchronization of the estrous cycle and 21 days for fatty acid flushing until the appearance of the next estrus. A completely randomized design was applied. Results According to the results, none of the different fatty acids in the ration affected the nutrient intakes, BCSs, average daily gains, and plasma glucose, cholesterol, and progesterone concentrations of the three groups of does. However, the BCSs (by 0.8-0.9) and the plasma cholesterol concentrations were higher after fatty acid flushing for 21 days than before the flushing period. The ALA group had the highest number of large-sized preovulatory follicles, whereas the LAURIC group had the highest plasma estradiol concentration during estrus. All three groups had similar plasma progesterone concentrations during estrus after fatty acid flushing. Conclusion Flushing supplementation with 2.8% ALA from flaxseed oil gave the best results in terms of stimulating the highest number of large-sized preovulatory follicles in Ettawa Grade does.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to monitor and evaluate the seasonal changes on selected reproductive parameters in mares. Ninety-six mares of different breeds, aged 3 to 23 years were evaluated during the breeding season 2015–2018 at the Equine clinic at University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacology in Košice, Slovakia (48°42´N, 21°15´E). The beginning of the estrus was determined by history or observation, mares were examined every 6 hours, blood for progesterone analysis was taken from the jugular vein. Correlation analyses were performed using both the Pearson and the Spearman correlation coefficient. Statistical analysis was performed using the functions of Microsoft Excel and GraphPad Prism. The day length (r = -0.708, P<0.0001) and the average ambient temperature (r = -0.754, P<0.0001) had a statistically significant effect on the duration of estrus. The shortest estrus was recorded in July with day length of 15 hours 40 minutes at an average temperature of 21.4 ± 0.52 °C, with duration 4.67 ± 0.58 days. The longest estrus was recorded in April with day length of 11 hours 48 minutes at average temperature of 6.9 °C. The environmental factors did not affect the size of the preovulatory follicles, the concentration of progesterone, the internal changes of uterus and the external manifestations of estrus.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess the uterine blood flow (UBF) and corpus luteum blood flow (CLBF) in llamas 8 days post-mating, using color-Doppler ultrasonography (CDU), to determine the possible relationship between vascularization and the presence of an embryo. Adult females (n = 25) were used to monitor ovarian dynamics by palpation and transrectal ultrasonography until detection of a ≥6 mm growing follicle. Females were randomly assigned to one of two groups: Group I (n = 19), were mated and ovulation was induced by a single dose of buserelin (GnRH analog) that same day (Day 0); and Group II (n = 6), only ovulation was induced (control). On Day 8, UBF and CLBF were evaluated transrectally in both groups. The color-flow images obtained were analyzed with Image J1.52a software to determine the vascularization area and the percentage of corpus luteum with blood flow emission (CLBF%) together with the percentage for each uterine horn (UBF%). Statistical analysis was performed using an ANOVA test. In Group I, uterine flushing was performed to obtain the embryos, thus dividing the females into Group I+ (n = 10), when an embryo was recovered and Group I- (n = 9), when no embryo was recovered. Embryo recovery rate was 52.63% (10/19). In Group I+, UBF% was significantly higher compared to Group I- and Group II (P <0.05). UBF appears to be a good predictor for embryo presence, with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.9 and an optimal cut-off value of 9.37% (with a sensitivity of 90% and specificity of 88.9%). The CLBF% did not differ between groups (P > 0.05). In conclusion, it is possible to detect a local increase of UBF in the presence of an embryo on day 8 post-mating in llamas. This could be useful to achieve an early pregnancy diagnosis or to decide whether to carry out the uterine flushing in a llama embryo transfer program.

Abstract
The mammalian ovary is responsible for essential stages of folliculogenesis and hormonal production, regulating the female physiological functions during the menstrual/estrous cycles. The mare has been considered an attractive model for comparative studies due to the striking similarities shared with women regarding in vivo and in vitro folliculogenesis. The ovarian follicular population in horses contains a large number of oocytes enclosed in preantral follicles that are yet to be explored. Therefore, the in vitro manipulation of equine preantral follicles aims to avoid the process of atresia and promote the development of follicles with competent oocytes. In this regard, after ovarian tissue harvesting, the use of appropriate processing techniques, as well as suitable approaches to evaluating equine preantral follicles and ovarian tissue, are necessary. Although high-quality equine ovarian tissue can be obtained from several sources, some critical aspects, such as the age of the animals, ovarian cyclicity, reproductive phase, and the types of ovarian structures, should be considered. Therefore, this review will focus on providing an update on the most current advances concerning the critical factors able to influence equine preantral follicle quality and quantity. Also, the in vivo strategies used to harvest equine ovarian tissue, the approaches to manipulating ovarian tissue post-harvesting, the techniques for processing ovarian tissue, and the classical approaches used to evaluate preantral follicles will be discussed.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the RI and PI values would help in choosing the best embryo recipient, and observe whether CL vascularization would influence P4 production. During the breeding season 2018/2019, the study was conducted using 35 mares, which is used for reference to collect data for the project on the day of embryo transfer. The utilized mares were divided into five groups followed by the day after ovulation, with D0 being the day of ovulation. Therefore, the five groups are as follows: D4-mares that were on the 4th post-ovulation day; D5-mares that were on the 5th post-ovulation day; and doing so successively for D6, D7 and D8. On the day of embryo transfer, the CL of the mares that selected as recipients was evaluated by B-mode and power flow mode ultrasonography and the right and left dorsal branches of the uterine arteries by spectral Doppler ultrasonography. Blood samples were taken on the day of the embryo transfer for a dosage of P4 concentration by radioimmunoassay. No statistical difference was found between the variables when the mares were separated into pregnant and non-pregnant mares, or when they were separated by age groups. When the groups of mares were compared by the day of embryo transfer, the statistical difference was found between the groups D5 × D6 (p = .0053) and D6 × D8 (p = .0036) in RI variable. In PI variable, the statistical difference was found between the groups D4 × D8 (p = .049), D5 × D6 (p = .0446) and D6 × D8 (p = .0024). We conclude that the mares with RI measurement of uterine arteries near 1.0 are correlated to mares with high CL vascularization and elevated P4 concentration.

Abstract
The hypothesis of this study was to investigate if the presence of corpus luteum (CL) in one ovary could modify the hormonal content of follicular fluid (FF) in the follicles. Sixty ovaries were taken after the slaughter of 30 clinically healthy mares. In relation to the sizes, the follicles were classified into three different categories, as small (20-30 mm), medium (31-40 mm) and large (≥41 mm). Blood samples were collected from the jugular vein of mares before their slaughter, and then the FF samplings were extracted from each single follicle. The ovaries that were collected were classified into two groups, according to the presence (CL-bearing) or absence (non-CL-bearing) of CL. The serum and FF samples were analysed for progesterone (P4), oestradiol-17β (E2), testosterone (T), androstenedione (A4) and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). Intrafollicular P4 concentrations in large follicles of CL-bearing groups were lower than for non-CL-bearing ones. Intrafollicular E2 concentrations increased with the increase of the follicle diameter in both groups, CL-bearing and non-CL-bearing. However, in the FF with a large and medium follicle size, E2 concentrations were significantly higher in non-CL-bearing groups than in CL-bearing groups. T and A4 significantly increased in the large and medium follicle sizes when compared to the small follicle sizes in both groups, but higher concentrations in the non-CL-bearing group were obtained. Intrafollicular DHEA significantly decreased with the increase of the follicular diameter in both groups. Steroid hormones in FF dynamically changed, according to the presence or not of CL in the ovary. This study brings new knowledge on the role of the CL in the follicular hormonal composition in mares.

Abstract
This study aimed to gain insight on the effect of different seasons of the year on the expression pattern of growth factor and hormone receptors involved in follicle development. A novel follicle wall biopsy technique was used to collect in vivo follicle wall layers (ie, granulosa, theca interna, and theca externa) and follicular fluid samples from growing dominant follicles, simultaneously and repeatedly, using the same mares during the spring anovulatory (SAN), spring ovulatory (SOV), summer (SU), and fall ovulatory (FOV) seasons. The immunofluorescent expression patterns of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), Ki-67, vascular endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR), and LH receptor (LHR) were evaluated in each follicle wall layer, in addition to intrafollicular estradiol and nitric oxide (NO). Proliferative proteins (EGFR and Ki-67) were highly (P < 0.05-P < 0.001) expressed during the SOV season compared with the SAN and FOV seasons. Lower (P < 0.05-P < 0.001) expression of both proteins was observed during SU compared with the SOV season. The expression of VEGFR was greater (P < 0.05-P < 0.01) in the theca interna of dominant follicles during the SOV season compared with the SAN and SU seasons. Similarly, in the overall quantification, the VEGFR expression was greater (P < 0.001) during the SOV season compared with the SU and FOV seasons. A higher (P < 0.05) LHR expression was detected in the theca interna during the SOV season than the SAN season. Furthermore, a higher (P < 0.05-P < 0.001) expression of LHR was observed in the granulosa, theca interna, and in the overall quantification during the SOV season compared with the SU and FOV seasons. Intrafollicular NO concentration did not differ (P > 0.05) among different seasons of the year. The intrafollicular estradiol concentration was higher (P < 0.05) during the SU compared with the SAN season and higher (P < 0.05) during the FOV season compared with the SAN and SOV seasons. In conclusion, the synergistic effect of lower expression of proliferative protein, angiogenic, and LH receptors in at least some of the layers of the follicle wall seems to trigger dominant follicles toward the anovulation process during the spring and fall transitional seasons.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to characterize corpus luteum vascularization and its association with plasma progesterone concentration in early stages of pregnancy, when maternal recognition of pregnancy is expected to occur. In all animals, both plasma progesterone concentration and corpus luteum vascularization increased from Day 6 to Day 8 post-mating and afterwards in non-pregnant llamas they started to decrease to reach basal levels around Days 12 to 14 post-mating, while in pregnant animals, both variables remained elevated until the end of the study. A lineal positive relationship between corpus luteum vascularization and plasma progesterone concentration was observed in pregnant (r2 = .46, p < .0001) and non-pregnant llamas (r2 = .66, p < .0001). Pregnant animals showed higher plasma progesterone concentration and corpus luteum vascularization than the non-pregnant ones from Day 12 post-mating until the end of the study (p ˂ .05 and p ˂ .01, respectively). These results suggest that maternal recognition of pregnancy should occur before Day 12 post-mating in order to expand luteal lifespan, maintaining corpus luteum vascularization and progesterone production. Also, the assessment of CL vascularization area could be a useful and non-invasive method for early pregnancy diagnosis due to its association with plasma progesterone concentration.

Abstract
Establishment of pregnancy after embryo transfer is the ultimate goal of an embryo transfer program and increasing pregnancy rates and reducing pregnancy loss are mandatory. The utilization of treatments to improve conception rates in recipient mares has been the focus of several research groups over the last years and the results are controversial. Some studies using human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) found promising results. Our hypothesis was that hCG administration would cause an additional stimulation on luteal function, uterine and luteal vascularization and progesterone concentration, and the mares would have increased uterine and cervix tone. Therefore, in the present study the effects of hCG administration to induce ovulation, on day 0 (day of ovulation) or day 5 postovulation were evaluated on corpus luteum characteristics, reproductive tract vascularization, and serum progesterone concentration from ovulation until day 15 postovulation. Groups were: G1: (control) - no hCG; G2: 2500 IU of hCG to induce ovulation when a follicle greater than 35mm and uterine edema were detected; G3: 2500 IU hCG on day 0; G4: 2500 IU hCG on day 5 postovulation. Twelve mares were randomly assigned to each group, during consecutive cycles, in a Latin Square experimental design, in a total of 48 cycles. Doppler ultrasound evaluations were performed daily from day 0 until day 15 postovulation, including mesometrial vascularity, endometrial vascularity and corpus luteum vascularity. Blood samples were collected for serum progesterone concentration. Data was analyzed using the Proc Glimmix SAS Procedure for nonparametric variables and Proc Mixed for parametric parameters. There was no treatment effect for all variables studied (P > 0.05). Characteristics were only affected by day (P < 0.05). It can be concluded that hCG administration at the time points suggested in the current study did not alter the characteristics evaluated.

Abstract
The hypothesis that a local serotonergic network might also exist in the follicle of mares remains poorly documented, with exception for humans and laboratory species. For this reason, the aim of the present study was to clarify this possibility, investigating intrafollicular serotonin concentrations of the cycling mare at ovulation time. Sixty ovaries collected from 30 clinically healthy mares of slaughterhouse meat production with clinically normal reproductive tracts after slaughtering were evaluated. Blood samples were taken prior to sacrifice. Follicles were classified in three categories in relation to size, as small (20-30 mm), medium (31-40 mm) and large (>41 mm), and the follicular fluid samples were extracted from each follicle. Intrafollicular and systemic serotonin (5-HT), oestradiol-17β (E2 ) and progesterone (P4 ) were determined by means of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and RIA, respectively. Intrafollicular 5-HT, E2 and P4 concentrations were higher than systemic ones (p < .05). 5-HT concentrations increased in larger compared to medium follicles, without differences compared to small size follicles (p < .05). 5-HT and E2 (r = .79) and 5-HT and P4 (r = .79; p < .05) were positively correlated. 5-HT and P4 concentrations in follicular fluid increased progressively with the increase in follicular size (p < .05). Follicle diameter and E2 (r = .85) and P4 (r = .68) were correlated (p < .05). Since serotonin interacts with steroids, its role on steroidogenesis during growth of the dominant follicle may be suggested.

Abstract
We aimed to study the association between CL characteristics assessed by color-Doppler ultrasonography (Doppler-US) at the time of embryo transfer (ET) and pregnancy rate (P/ET) in beef recipients. Estrous cycles of crossbred beef recipients were synchronized for timed-ET. On the day of ET (Day 7), CL area, proportion of luteal blood perfusion (BP), and the relationship between the largest dominant follicle (DF) and CL (ipsilateral or contralateral) were determined. Animals (n = 444) received an in vitro produced embryo from Nelore donors, placed in the uterine horn ipsilateral to the CL. Recipients were split retrospectively in three subgroups according to CL area [small (<3 cm2), medium (3-4 cm2), or large (>4 cm2)] and three subgroups according to luteal signals of BP [low (≤40%), medium (45-50%) or high (≥55%)]. Pregnancy was detected on Days 30-45 by transrectal ultrasonography and P/ET was analyzed considering the effects of cow's category (suckling or non-suckling), CL area, luteal BP and side of DF. P/ET increased along with BP category [low, 45.9%B, (62/135); medium, 54.1%AB (93/172); and high, 58.4%A (80/137)]. When luteal BP was evaluated as a continuous variable, a significant (P < 0.05) linear and positive effect was observed on P/ET. A greater (P < 0.05) CL area and serum progesterone concentrations were observed in the medium and high BP than in the low BP category. Although an effect of luteal size category was not significant on P/ET [small, 49% (76/155); medium, 59.7% (83/139); and large, 50.7% (75/148); P > 0.1], when CL area was evaluated as a continuous variable, a quadratic effect (P < 0.05) indicated a positive relationship between P/ET and CL area until luteal tissue reached 4.07 cm2, followed by a negative relationship. The location of the first-wave DF in relation to the CL did not affect P/ET (P > 0.1). In conclusion, Doppler-US is an innovative tool that has the potential to be used for selection of suitable embryo recipients based on luteal BP. Selection of recipients that have a greater chance of maintaining pregnancy will increase the success of timed-ET programs.

Abstract
The aim was to evaluate the associations between circulating P4 concentrations, corpus luteum (CL) size (diameter, area or volume) and blood perfusion (BP) in cows. In Experiment 1, Pearson's correlations (P < 0.05) with P4 concentrations were observed during CL development (D8) for total area (TA; r = 0.76), luteal area (ACL; r = 0.72), total and luteal diameter (TD and DCL respectively; r = 0.46). During mid-late diestrus, there was a positive correlation (P < 0.05) only at D15 with TA and ACL (r > 0.60), TD, total volume (TV) and luteal volume (VCL; r > 0.434). During luteal regression, the correlation was only observed at D18 for ACL (r = 0.478) and D20 with several variables. In Experiment 2, CL weight and ACL had the greatest correlation with P4 (r > 0.6). In Experiment 3, TA and ACL were the variables that were most closely correlated with serum P4 concentrations at D7 in recipient cows. Correlation coefficients were greater for luteal measurements when there were compact compared with cavitary CLs. In Experiment 4, there was no correlation (P > 0.05) between P4 and any of the variables measured on D4 and D7 in recipient cows detected in estrus. On D18 to D20, all CL characteristics were correlated (P < 0.05) with plasma P4, and luteal BP and BP area were more closely (P < 0.05) correlated than ACL. In conclusion, CL perimeter area measurements had the greatest association with luteal function during CL development; whereas for BP there was a greater correlation with P4 than luteal size during luteolysis.

Abstract
To investigate the development of treated and untreated hormonal anovulatory follicles (AnOV) associated with uterine and ovarian vascularization, rectal Doppler ultrasound of seven Arabian mares was performed before and after the development of an AnOV. In addition to measuring the diameter, area and volume of the follicle, daily colour and power Doppler scans were analysed in order to measure red, blue and power blood flow areas in pixels. Serum levels of estradiol (E2), progesterone (P4), leptin, insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-1) and nitric oxide (NO) were measured as well. The diameter (cm), area (cm2), volume (cm3), area in pixels, antral area in pixels, circumference, and percentage change in circulation of the AnOV progressively increased (P<0.0001) after the disappearance of uterine oedema compared to the values obtained during oedema. The blue, total colour and power areas of the AnOV increased after the disappearance of uterine oedema (P<0.0001). When the antral area was excluded, the percentage of the granulosa layer in the colour and power Doppler decreased after the disappearance of uterine oedema. The ipsilateral uterine horn and uterine body had significantly (P<0.0001) high blue and red blood flow vascularization areas in the presence of uterine oedema. The AnOV was associated with low P4, IGF-1 (P<0.001), and leptin (P<0.05). Treatment of the AnOV follicle with GnRH resulted in its luteinization and induced ovulation 9 and 30 days later. It can be concluded that an abrupt increase in blood flow due to decreased progesterone and E2 and increased IGF-1 causes anovulation. The absence of oestrous behaviour and high uterine-oedema-associated follicular and ipsilateral uterine horn vascularization are predictors of ovulation failure.
