Effects of anesthetic MS-222 on stress and reproduction of South American silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) males

Artificial light at night disrupts male dominance relationships and reproductive success in a model fish species

Environmental light is perceived and anticipated by organisms to synchronize their biological cycles. Therefore, artificial light at night (ALAN) disrupts both diurnal and seasonal biological rhythms. Reproduction is a complex physiological process involving integration of environmental signals by the brain, and release of endocrine signals by the pituitary that regulate gametogenesis and spawning. In addition, males from many species form a dominance hierarchy that, through a combination of aggressive and protective behavior, influences their reproductive success. In this study, we investigated the effect of ALAN and continuous daylight on the behavior and fitness of male fish within a dominance hierarchy using a model fish, the Japanese medaka. In normal light/dark cycles, male medaka establish a hierarchy with the dominant males being more aggressive and remaining closer to the female thus limiting the access of subordinate males to females during spawning. However, determination of the paternity of the progeny revealed that even though subordinate males spend less time with the females, they are, in normal light conditions, equally successful at producing progeny due to an efficient sneaking behavior. Continuous daylight completely inhibited the establishment of male hierarchy, whereas ALAN did not affect it. Nonetheless, when exposed to ALAN, subordinate males fertilize far fewer eggs. Furthermore, we found that when exposed to ALAN, subordinate males produced lower quality sperm than dominant males. Surprisingly, we found no differences in circulating sex steroid levels, pituitary gonadotropin levels, or gonadosomatic index between dominant and subordinate males, neither in control nor ALAN condition. This study is the first to report an effect of ALAN on sperm quality leading to a modification of male fertilization success in any vertebrate. While this work was performed in a model fish species, our results suggest that in urban areas ALAN may impact the genetic diversity of species displaying dominance behavior.

Catfishes: A global review of the literature

This study aims to elucidate the evolution of catfish research publications over recent decades, identify emerging research clusters, examine keyword patterns, determine major contributors (including authors, organizations, and funding agencies), and analyze their collaborative networks and citation bursts on a global scale. The USA, Brazil, China, and India collectively contribute approximately 67% of the total catfish research publications, with a marked increase in prevalence since 2016. The most frequently occurring and dominant keywords are "channel catfish" and "responses," respectively. Intriguingly, our findings reveal 28 distinct article clusters, with prominent clusters including "yellow catfish," "channel catfish", "pectoral girdle," "African catfish", "Rio Sao Francisco basin," "Edwardsiella ictaluri," and "temperature mediated". Concurrently, keyword clustering generates seven main clusters: "new species", "growth performance", "heavy metal", "gonadotropin-releasing", "essential oil", and "olfactory receptor". This study further anticipates future research directions, offering fresh perspectives on the catfish literature landscape. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first article to conduct a comprehensive mapping review of catfish research publications worldwide.

Essential oil of Magnolia denudata is an effective anesthetic for spotted seabass (Lateolabrax maculatus): a test of its effect on blood biochemistry, physiology, and gill morphology

Magnolia denudata is a well-known ornamental tree in China due to its beautiful blossoms, and it has been used as an analgesic to treat human headaches. This study investigated the anesthetic potential and physiological response of the essential oil of M. denudata flowers on spotted seabass Lateolabrax maculatus. Fish (mean ± SD, 164.16 ± 15.40 g) were individually exposed to different concentrations of M. denudata essential oil (MDO, 10, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, and 120 mg/L) and eugenol (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, and 70 mg/L) to investigate anesthetic efficacy. Based on the ideal time criterion for anesthetic induction (< 3 min) and recovery (< 10 min), the lowest effective concentration for spotted seabass was 100 mg/L for MDO and 60 mg/L for eugenol. The physiological and histopathological damage in the gill of L. maculatus after using MDO and eugenol was also evaluated at the minimum dose inducing deep anesthesia, and at 0, 6, and 24 h after recovery. The results showed that MDO and eugenol anesthesia alleviated the levels of cortisol and glucose and the lactic dehydrogenase activity induced by handling. Compared with eugenol, MDO also caused secondary stress to the body, but MDO caused minor physiological responses and histological changes in the gills. This study suggests that MDO is an effective anesthetic for spotted seabass.
