Development and Validation of a Management of Workplace Violence Competence Scale for Nursing Practicum Students

Nursing students' exposure to violence in clinical practice and violence management competence levels

INTRODUCTION

The violence nursing students experience in the clinic may affect their attitudes towards the profession.

AIM

This study was conducted to determine nursing students' exposure to violence during their clinical practice and their violence management competence levels.

DESIGN

This was a two-centred, descriptive, and correlational study.

PARTICIPANTS

A total of 512 nursing students from two universities in Türkiye participated in this study.

METHODS

The study data was collected between March and April 2023 with the Student Information Form, Violence Exposure Form, and Management of Workplace Violence Competence Scale for Nursing Students. Institutional permission and ethics committee approval were obtained before starting the study (Date: 05/01/2023, No: 50). Descriptive statistics, Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal Wallis test and linear regression analysis were used to evaluate the data. Statistical significance was accepted as p < 0.05.

RESULTS

It was determined that 17.4 % (n = 89) of the participant students felt competent in managing violence, and 94.3 % (n= 483) were concerned about being exposed to violence at various levels. In these results, 20.5 % (n = 105) of them were exposed to violence during clinical practice, 60.9 % (n = 64) of whom experienced verbal violence and 52.3 % (n = 55) psychological violence. The total mean score from the violence management competence scale was 103.29 ± 16.64. No statistically significant difference was found between the scale total and subscale scores according to gender (p > 0.05). The scale total scores of fourth-grade students with a good perceived academic success and who received training on coping with violence were statistically significantly higher (p˂0.05). The regression model created between the scale score and students' perceived academic success and receiving white code training (Training on the use of the alarm system that will enable security guards to reach the scene as soon as possible in cases where healthcare workers are exposed to all kinds of violence.) was statistically significant (F = 23.108, p < 0.001).

CONCLUSION

Some of the students participating in the study experienced violence in clinical practices. Their violence management competence levels were good. It can be said that academic success, coping with violence, and white code training are useful in increasing competence levels.

Validation of Scales for Researching Stakeholders' Attitudes Toward Domestic Violence in China

Domestic violence (DV) is a significant concern within China. Currently, there are few standardized measurement tools to gauge Chinese stakeholders' perceptions and beliefs concerning DV. This research sought to validate tools to be used with such stakeholders. Factor analyses were utilized on cross-sectional, survey data from a purposive sample of 683 Chinese DV professionals working in four institutions in Guangdong. Analyses developed three scales for measuring DV Definitions, DV Attitudes, and DV Policing. The development of these scales is beneficial to advance the already growing research related to DV in China in ways that are relevant to the Chinese context.

Assessing self-reported public health emergency competencies for civil aviation personnel in China: a pilot study

INTRODUCTION

COVID-19 has demonstrated the importance of competent staff with expertise in public health emergency preparedness and response in the civil aviation system. The civil aviation system is a critical sentinel and checkpoint to prevent imported cases and slow the spread of communicable diseases. Understanding the current competencies of staff to deal with public health emergencies will help government agencies develop targeted training and evidence-based policies to improve their public health preparedness and response capabilities.

METHODS

This cross-sectional pilot study was conducted from November 2022 to October 2023, involving 118 staff members from various positions within China's civil aviation system. A 59-item questionnaire was translated and developed according to a competency profile. Data were collected using the self-report questionnaire to measure the workforce's self-perceptions of knowledge and skills associated with public health emergency proficiency, categorized into (1) general competency, (2) preparedness competency, (3) response competency, and (4) recovery competency. KMO & Bartlett test and Cronbach's α reliability analysis were used to test the reliability and validity of the questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, independent sample T-test, ANOVA, and linear regression models were performed to analyze the competencies.

RESULTS

A total of 107 staff members from the aviation system were surveyed in this study. The KMO & Bartlett test, (KMO = 0.919, P < 0.001) and Cronbach's α coefficients (α = 0.985) for this questionnaire were acceptable. The results suggested that respondents scored a mean of 6.48 out of 9 for the single question. However, the staff needed to acquire more knowledge in investigating epidemic information (5.92) and case managing (5.91) in the response stage. Overall, males scored higher (409.05 ± 81.39) than females (367.99 ± 84.97), with scores in the medical department (445.67 ± 72.01) higher than management (387.00 ± 70.87) and general department (362.32 ± 86.93). Additionally, those with completely subjective evaluation (425.79 ± 88.10) scored higher than the general group (374.39 ± 79.91). To predict the total score, female medical workers were more likely to have lower scores (β = -34.5, P = 0.041). Compared with those in the medical department, the management workers (β = -65.54, P = 0.008) and general workers (β = -78.06, P < 0.001) were associated with a lower total score.

CONCLUSIONS

There was still a gap between the public health emergency competencies of the civil aviation system and the demand. Staff in China's civil aviation systems demonstrated overall competence in public health emergency preparedness and response. However, there was a need to enhance the accumulation of practical experience. Implementing effective training programs for public health emergencies was recommended to mitigate knowledge gaps. Meanwhile, regular training evaluations were also recommended to give comprehensive feedback on the value of the training programs.

Competence in managing workplace violence among nursing interns: Application of latent class analysis

AIM

To identify subtypes of competence in managing workplace violence (WPV) among nursing interns and to assess between-group differences.

BACKGROUND

Nursing interns are reported to be a vulnerable population for experiencing workplace violence during their clinical placement. Although WPV could have a negative impact on nursing interns' health and attitudes towards the nursing profession, little is known about nursing interns' competence in workplace violence management or its influencing factors.

DESIGN

A cross-sectional study.

METHODS

Between March to April 2023, nursing interns at three tertiary general hospitals in Anhui Province, China, completed questionnaires including a general information questionnaire, the Management of Workplace Violence Competence Scale (MWVCS), the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES-9), the Emotional Labour Scale for Nurses (ELSN) and were classified into subtypes by latent class analysis. Subsequently, univariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression were performed to identify the influencing factors by subtypes.

RESULTS

A total of 264 questionnaires were valid and the overall mean age of the participants was 21.06 ±1.41 years. Four classes were identified: low competency group (15.5%), low cognition-low coping competency group (18.2%), low cognition-medium to high competency group (21.6%) and high competency group (44.7%). The results of multinomial logistic regression analysis showed that placement hospitals with a WPV management department, emotional control effort in profession dimension and emotional pretense by norms dimension in the Emotional Labour Scale for Nurses, pursuing further education and vigour dimension in the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale were influencing factors of the potential categories of WPV management competence.

CONCLUSIONS

Four classes were identified and there was competence variability among nursing interns. More attention should be given to nursing interns who did not receive WPV-related training in their school or placement hospital.

Violence management proficiency scale in application areas for nursing students: A Turkish validity and reliability study

AIM

The aim of this study is to perform the validity and reliability study of the Turkish version of the Management of Workplace Violence Competence Scale (MWVCS) for Nursing Students.

METHOD

The methodological and cross-sectional study design was used in the method of the study. The research was carried out with 300 nursing students in Turkey. Data were collected using the personal information form and MWVCS.

RESULTS

Explanatory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis results confirmed the four-factor structure of the scale. Cronbach's α, item-total correlation, test-retest analysis, and equivalent form analysis showed high reliability. The MWVCS consists of 28 items on a five-point Likert-type scale. Four factors explained 88.729 of the total variance explained. The content validity index of the scale is 0.99. Cronbach's α of the scale was 0.880 and test-retest correlations were found as 0.76.

CONCLUSION

The Turkish version of the MWVCS is a valid and reliable tool for assessing students' workplace violence.
