Transdiagnostic factors in symptoms of depression and post-traumatic stress: a systematic review

The current systematic review sought to identify quantitative empirical studies that focused on the transdiagnostic factors of intolerance of uncertainty, emotional dysregulation and rumination, and their relation with depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The overall research aim was to examine the relationship between these transdiagnostic factors and their relation with depression and PTSD symptoms. The systematic review was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Out of the 768 articles initially identified, 55 met the inclusion criteria for the current review. The results determined that intolerance of uncertainty is indirectly related to depression and PTSD symptoms, mainly through other factors including emotion dysregulation and rumination. Additionally, emotional dysregulation is a significant predictor of both depression and PTSD symptoms. Rumination is a robust factor related to depression and PTSD symptoms, this relationship was significant in cross-sectional and longitudinal studies. This review provides evidence on the transdiagnostic factors of intolerance of uncertainty, emotional dysregulation and rumination in the relationship with depression and PTSD symptoms.

Determinantes del Bienestar Subjetivo en Adultos Mexicanos durante el Primer periodo de Confinamiento por Covid-19

El confinamiento por Covid-19 tiene un impacto psicológico tanto negativo como positivo en las personas, por ello, se examinan las relaciones entre el estrés, apego, los valores culturales (individualismo-colectivismo) y la posible mediación de la resiliencia entre estas variables con el bienestar subjetivo durante la etapa inicial de pandemia en México, de marzo a mayo del 2020. Método: Con un diseño transversal de tipo correlacional participaron 287 adultos mexicanos hombres y mujeres con un rango de edad de 18 a 71 años (M= 35.16, DE= 14.14). Aplicándose en línea las escalas: estrés percibido, escala de apego, individualismo-colectivismo, resiliencia, y para bienestar subjetivo las escalas de satisfacción con la vida y de afecto positivo-negativo. Resultados: Los análisis mostraron impacto diferencial según sexo y rango de edad. Se aplicó un modelo de trayectorias el cual resultó con índices de ajuste aceptables lo que revela efectos conjuntos directos, indirectos y totales por lo que se comprueba el efecto mediador de la resiliencia. Conclusiones: es necesario dotar de habilidades para la vida para el manejo emocional que generen mayor bienestar en la población.

Lights and Shadows of Trait Emotional Intelligence: Its Mediating Role in the Relationship Between Negative Affect and State Anxiety in University Students

Nowadays, students are experiencing difficult and stressful situations due to the Global Pandemic Alert. This changing world can evoke negative emotions that have been traditionally linked to higher anxiety. Researches have been focused on the positive outcomes of trait emotional intelligence (TEI) preventing psychological disorders. However, the possibility that TEI might have a dark side has been neglected. Hence, this study aimed to explore the mediating effect of the three dimensions of TEI in the relationship between negative affect and anxiety symptoms among college students. Participants of this research were 467 undergraduates who completed an online self-reported questionnaire including the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS; Watson et al., 1988), the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI; Spielberger et al., 1970), and Trait Meta-Mood Scale (TMMS-24, Salovey et al., 1995). The global serial mediation model showed that the total amount of variance explained by the global model was 30.8% (R ² = 0.31). Negative affectivity and age accounted for the 15.1% of state anxiety variance (R ² = 0.15; c: B = 0.63, p < 0.001) while 15.7% of the variance of state anxiety was attributed to the direct or indirect effect of the three dimensions of TEI (R ² = 0.16). Five indirect effects presented statistical significance (95% BootCI). The contrast analyses between mediators showed that three indirect effects had higher statistical weigh; the ability of negative affect to increase state anxiety through (i) emotional attention; (ii) emotional clarity, and (iii) serially through emotional clarity and mood repair. Our results indicated that students' negative emotions lead to higher emotional attention which in turn may enhance state anxiety in two ways: by a direct effect of emotional attention on state anxiety and by a serial effect through emotional clarity. Moreover, when negative affect is associated with lower emotional clarity, anxiety symptoms may also arise. However, when attention and clarity are connected, the negative effect is reversed into a positive one, decreasing state anxiety.

Emotions as a state and as a trait in people with depressive disorders*

Depression is a disorder involving a number of changes in human psychosocial functioning. The aim of this study is to evaluate the intensity of positive and negative emotions understood both as a state and a permanent personality trait in people with depressive disorders and to determine whether the intensity of positive and negative emotions differentiates healthy people from people suffering from depressive disorders. The study was conducted on 107 individuals – 67 people from the experimental group suffering from depressive disorders and 40 people from the control group with a negative interview in terms of mental and somatic disorders. The following tools were used: Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (evaluation of severity of depressive symptoms), STAI Questionnaire (evaluation of anxiety severity as a state and trait) and PANAS Questionnaire (intensity of negative and positive emotions as a state and trait). A significantly higher intensity of positive emotions understood both as a state and a trait was observed in the people not suffering from depression, while the opposite results were obtained with regard to negative emotions, i.e. the individuals suffering from depression recorded lower scores than the healthy persons. It was also shown that the people with depression had higher scores in terms of the level of anxiety as a state and trait. The intensity of positive emotions as a state was significantly higher among the people with the first depressive episode in comparison to the people with recurrent depressive disorders. The severity of depression correlated positively with the intensity of negative emotions as a state both at the time of inclusion in the study and after obtaining a response to the applied pharmacological treatment. Experienced positive and negative emotions, understood both as a state and as a trait, differentiate not only individuals with depression from healthy people, but also patients with the first depressive episode and those with recurrent depressive disorders.
