QFD: a methodological tool for integration of ergonomics at the design stage

Design of breastfeeding chairs for maternity rooms based on Kano-AHP-QFD: User requirement-driven design approach

In maternity rooms, breastfeeding chairs are crucial pieces of equipment that greatly influence the breastfeeding experience. However, an abundance of data indicates that there are still issues with breastfeeding chairs, including inadequate support for breastfeeding, poor body type adaptability, and failure to adequately analyse the requirements of mothers and baby users. This study used an innovative research approach to breastfeeding chair design from the standpoint of user requirements to improve breastfeeding willingness and user experience. We propose a user requirement assessment design approach that integrates the Kano model, analytic hierarchy process (AHP), and quality function development (QFD) based on the requirements of mother and baby groups. This approach was intended to build a user experience evaluation model for mother- and baby-friendly products. Following this approach to breastfeeding chair design, a fuzzy comprehensive evaluation (FCE) was used to assess the chair. Compared to the original breastfeeding chairs, the designs of breastfeeding chairs that met important requirements for mothers and infants, such as safety, hygiene, and breastfeeding support, resulted in an approximately 23 % increase in user satisfaction. This effectively improved the user experience of both mothers and infants. This approach is centred on the basic requirements of mothers and babies. It evaluates the essential requirements that impact the breastfeeding experiences of mothers and babies and provides multifaceted data regarding the attributes of the different requirements of mothers and babies. This results in theoretical research references for ensuing user-driven design products that cater to the requirements of mothers and their infants and play a pivotal role in formulating design guidelines for mother- and baby-friendly products.

Mobile Health Application for Seizure Management: A Human-Systems Integration Approach

OBJECTIVE

The study aims to develop a mHealth application for seizure management based on the human system integration (HSI) approach.

BACKGROUND

Unmet healthcare needs among people with epilepsy continue to exist despite the advancement in healthcare technology. Current seizure management methods are found to be ineffective. Therefore, a more efficient strategy such as mHealth technology is necessary to aid seizure management.

METHOD

The needs identification phase involved identifying the user requirements by interviewing 10 stakeholders and conducting thematic analysis and needs interpretation technique. In the solution identification phase, the system requirements were derived using various human-centered design and systems engineering approaches and were evaluated through quality function deployment to determine design targets. For the design and evaluation phase, the design targets were reflected in the app through the iterative prototyping process, and the interface and functional design were evaluated by seven human factors and ergonomics experts and four stakeholders, respectively.

RESULTS

Three primary needs and ten user requirements were derived from the needs identification phase. Ten out of fifteen system requirements were selected as design targets to be included in the final prototype. Results of the evaluation showed that the interface design of the proposed app showed superior usability compared to a competitor app and that the app functions were beneficial for the stakeholders.

CONCLUSION

The mHealth app designed through the HSI framework showed good potential in addressing the main issues in seizure management.

APPLICATION

The mHealth app design methodology based on the HSI approach can be applied to the design of small-scale systems in various domains.

QFD-Based Research on Sustainable User Experience Optimization Design of Smart Home Products for the Elderly: A Case Study of Smart Refrigerators

In the current situation of global aging, the current market shortage of age-appropriate smart home products and the recent epidemic have led to greater isolation of the elderly, seriously affecting their physical and mental health. In order to optimize the sustainable user experience of the elderly when using smart home products, this paper proposes a research method based on Quality Function Deployment (QFD) for the optimal design of user experience of smart home products for the elderly, taking the design of age-appropriate home smart refrigerators as an example. Firstly, based on the results of market research and user interviews, the requirements of smart refrigerators for the elderly are screened and integrated, and the Kano model is used to prioritize these needs, resulting in the identification of important features needed in smart refrigerators for the elderly. Secondly, based on QFD, user requirements are transformed into design requirements, and a quality house model is established to ascertain the degree of importance of each design requirement through user ratings so as to obtain the key requirements as the theoretical basis for the solution design. Finally, optional solutions are generated for concept evaluation based on PUGH concept selection, comparing the advantages and disadvantages of the solutions and recombining them into an evaluation to determine the best solution. The quantitative evaluation of the four solutions reveals that Solution A has the highest score of 117.358, followed by Solution D with 113.259, Solution B with 96.415, and Solution C with 85.511, which is the lowest. The scoring allows the best design solution to be selected and applied to product development. The results show that the introduction of the Kano model and PUGH concept selection into QFD can be effectively used as a research method for optimizing the user experience of smart refrigerators for the elderly, and a corresponding design strategy for sustainable user experience optimization is proposed. The method and strategy provide guidance for the innovative design of new smart home products.

Designing the Ergonomic Press and Molding Machine of Cassava Chips for Sustainable Development in SMEs

The sustainability of the SMEs depends on how the SMEs could compete with their competitor. Utilizing technology is a way that can be used to survive in those competitions. Unfortunately, some of the SMEs in Indonesia could not afford to utilize the technology due to financial problems. Therefore, the aim of this research is to create an ergonomic working environment by utilizing the technology through the design of the press and molding machine. In its application, the concepts of Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) and Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) were used to assess the working posture. The results of this assessment show that the working environment of this SME, especially in the pressing and molding process was not ergonomic and need to be improved. The given improvement is in the form of press and molding machine design and its prototype. The designing process was done using the concept of Quality Function Deployment (QFD). On the other side, to assess the level of success for the given design and machine, the REBA and RULA assessment was carried out. The results of the REBA and RULA assessment for the new machine showed that it could decrease the previous score of both REBA and RULA. The results of this research are expecting to increase the production capacity, minimizing the occurrence of MSDs, and improving the quality of the chips. In the long-term, it will be able to increase the competitiveness of this SME.

Mask Design for Life in the Midst of COVID-19

Existing medical masks have various disadvantages, such as the environmental damage caused by disposable masks, the discomfort and poor ventilation caused by prolonged mask wearing, and the lack of aesthetic design in mass-produced masks. Thus, this study used quality function deployment, the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process, and fuzzy comprehensive evaluation to research, develop, and design masks. The aforementioned methods were also used to determine the ranking of design requirements. The following priority ranking of design requirements from most to least important was obtained: reducing discomfort at the contact between the mask and the skin (0.265), avoiding foul odor inside the mask (0.187), convenient cleaning and portability (0.166), good airtightness (0.152), suitable aesthetic design for wearing in public and on social occasions (0.130), and reducing waste (0.100). Experts evaluated mask designs, and their opinions were subject to fuzzy analysis. Specifically, 50% of the experts evaluated the designs to be “good” or “very good”. Only 29% of the experts rated the design results as “average”. Thus, the innovative mask designed in this study can meet the needs of users, overcome the drawbacks of existing masks, and provide a feasible solution for the current COVID-19 pandemic.

HoQ-based evaluation of UHC competencies using an extension of interval-valued spherical fuzzy and hesitant 2-tuple linguistic term sets

Healthy life is recognized as one of the most fundamental human rights. However, even today, millions of people around the world are forced to choose between their basic needs and fundamental rights. Half of the world’s population does not have access to the healthcare they need. Universal Health Coverage (UHC) aims to ensure that all individuals receive the quality health services they need without incurring a financial burden, and to protect them from risk factors that threaten their health. The aim of this study is to identify the significant factors to improve UHC in the countries. For this purpose, house of quality (HoQ) approach is used in the analysis process so that both customer expectations and technical requirements are considered. Within this framework, a novel hybrid model has been proposed which has three different stages. Firstly, 3 groups of diseases and 4 clinical services for each group are determined regarding the customer needs. Secondly, these factors are weighted by using interval-valued intuitionistic hesitant 2-tuple fuzzy decision making and trial evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL). In the final stage, 9 different technical requirements are ranked by using interval-valued intuitionistic hesitant 2-tuple fuzzy technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS). Additionally, another evaluation has also been conducted by considering Spherical fuzzy sets. Similarly, a comparative analysis has also been performed with VIKOR while ranking the alternatives. It is concluded that analysis results of both evaluations are quite similar. This situation gives an information about the coherency and consistency of the analysis results. The findings indicate that treatment services in noncommunicable diseases play the most significant role in this respect. Moreover, according to the ranking results, it is concluded that strategic policies should be related to improving the social security and special physician capacity as well as decreasing the out-of-pocket payment.

Continuous Improvement Process in the Development of a Low-Cost Rotational Rheometer

The rheological characterization of fluids using a rheometer is an essential task in food processing, materials, healthcare or even industrial engineering; in some cases, the high cost of a rheometer and the issues related to the possibility of developing both electrorheological and magnetorheological tests in the same instrument have to be overcome. With that in mind, this study designed and constructed a low-cost rotational rheometer with the capacity to adapt to electro- and magneto-rheological tests. The design team used the method of continuous improvement through Quality Function Deployment (QFD) and risk analysis tools such as Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA). These analyses were prepared in order to meet the customer’s needs and engineering requirements. In addition to the above, a manufacturing control based on process sheets was used, leading to the construction of a functional rheometer with a cost of USD $1500.

The development of an ergonomically designed product through an integrated product team approach

Purpose. This article discusses the process of developing an ergonomic desk for students through an integrated product team approach. Methodology. Using an integrated product team approach, numerous quality tools, customization techniques, strategic tools and techniques including quality function deployment, ergonomic principles, Kano model, SCAMPER (substitute, combine, adapt, modify, put, eliminate, reverse), brainstorming, Pareto's principle and cause-and-effect diagrams were systematically applied. In addition, for detailed designs, anthropometric measurements were considered. Results. Having identified various health problems associated with use of unergonomic furniture by students, this study developed an ergonomic desk using SolidWorks version 2016. The ergonomic student desk considered the design for adjustability principle which accommodates 90% of all students (5th percentile female to 95th percentile male). Conclusions. Data obtained from three colleges were systematically verified, validated and evaluated and a design for an ergonomic student desk was the result. Adoption of these systematic processes gives the design practical validity, and once the ergonomic student desk has completed the manufacturing process its use is expected to lead to a reduction in the incidence of musculoskeletal disorders, neck problems, back pain and pressure on the hips. Ultimately, students having acquired a desk designed to fit their requirements will achieve comfort and satisfaction.

The Dibber: Designing a standardised handheld tool for lay-up tasks

We present an application of engineering and ergonomics principles in the design of a standardised tool, The Dibber, which is a tool with multiple geometric features to fit the diversity of lay-up tasks used in the composites industry. The Dibber is the result of a design process, which consists of a series of observations and prototyping to extract geometric requirements for lay-up tasks. To demonstrate that it is possible to design a standardised tool prototypes of the Dibber were distributed and 91 participants gave feedback. Our results are positive and show consistent patterns of use across industry sectors, as well as between novice and expert laminators.

Non-powered hand tool improvement research for prevention of work-related problems: a review

PURPOSE

In lower-middle-income countries, most of the work is performed manually using non-ergonomic hand tools which results in work-related health problems. Using hand tools designed in line with ergonomic principles may play an important role in reducing work-related health concerns significantly.

METHODS

Scientific databases (PubMed, EBSCOhost) and e-publishers were searched for articles from 1985 to 2015 using the following keywords: 'hand tool', 'ergonomics', 'usability' and 'design'. After applying selection criteria to 614 articles, 58 articles related to the physical design of hand tools were selected.

RESULTS

Seventeen articles were related to hand tool improvement in the manufacturing sector. Musculoskeletal disorders were found to be the most frequently occurring work-related health problems. Most of the articles focused on product and qualitative variables for improvement in hand tools, while few articles considered human and task variables.

CONCLUSIONS

Literature shows that hand tool improvement studies have been given less importance in low-income and lower-middle-income countries. However, some work of significance is reported in the agriculture sectors of these countries. Hence, it is concluded that ergonomic intervention in hand tools is much needed for those industries which employ traditional methods of working.

An information model to support user-centered design of medical devices

The process of engineering design requires the product development team to balance the needs and limitations of many stakeholders, including those of the user, regulatory organizations, and the designing institution. This is particularly true in medical device design, where additional consideration must be given for a much more complex user-base that can only be accessed on a limited basis. Given this inherent challenge, few projects exist that consider design domain concepts, such as aspects of a detailed design, a detailed view of various stakeholders and their capabilities, along with the user-needs simultaneously. In this paper, we present a novel information model approach that combines a detailed model of design elements with a model of the design itself, customer requirements, and of the capabilities of the customer themselves. The information model is used to facilitate knowledge capture and automated reasoning across domains with a minimal set of rules by adopting a terminology that treats customer and design specific factors identically, thus enabling straightforward assessments. A uniqueness of this approach is that it systematically provides an integrated perspective on the key usability information that drive design decisions towards more universal or effective outcomes with the very design information impacted by the usability information. This can lead to cost-efficient optimal designs based on a direct inclusion of the needs of customers alongside those of business, marketing, and engineering requirements. Two case studies are presented to show the method's potential as a more effective knowledge management tool with built-in automated inferences that provide design insight, as well as its overall effectiveness as a platform to develop and execute medical device design from a holistic perspective.

Ergonomics intervention on an alternative design of a spinal board

A spinal board is the evacuation tool of first aid to help the injured spinal cord. The existing spinal board has several weaknesses, both in terms of user comfort and the effectiveness and efficiency of the evacuation process. This study designs an ergonomic spinal board using the quality function deployment approach. A preliminary survey was conducted through direct observation and interviews with volunteers from the Indonesian Red Cross. Data gathered were translated into a questionnaire and answered by 47 participants in West Sumatra. The results indicate that the selection of materials, the application of strap systems as well as the addition of features are very important in designing an ergonomic spinal board. The data were used in designing an ergonomic spinal board. The use of anthropometric data ensures that this product can accommodate safety and comfort when immobilized, as well as the flexibility and speed of the rescue evacuation process.

Ergonomics and sustainable development in the past two decades (1992-2011): Research trends and how ergonomics can contribute to sustainable development

The need for sustainable development has been widely recognized and sustainable development has become a hot topic of various disciplines even though the role of ergonomics in it is seldom reported or considered. This study conducts a systematic survey of research publications in the fields of ergonomics and sustainable development over the past two decades (1992-2011), in order to identify their research trends and convergent areas where ergonomics can play an important role in sustainable development. The results show that 'methods and techniques', 'human characteristics', 'work design and organization', 'health and safety' and 'workplace and equipment design' are the top five frequently researched areas in ergonomics. Ergonomics has an opportunity to contribute its knowledge especially to 'industrial and product design', 'architecture', 'health and safety' and 'HCI' (especially for energy reduction issues) categories of sustainable development. Typical methodologies and general guidance on how to contribute the expertise of ergonomist to sustainable development are also discussed.

The usability and ergonomics of axes

This study evaluated the ergonomics and usability of axes. Several methods were used, namely measurement of impact velocity, the determination of kinetic energy, splitting performance tests, durability tests of blades and handles, and user trials. The mean velocity used in the striking was 9.6m/s (8.9-10.3m/s, SD 1.5). In the durability tests, the blades withstood the test reasonably well. In the bending tests, there were differences in the durability of the handles, which related to their material. A wide variation in the durability of the axe handles was also observed. User trials were conducted to evaluate the various features of the axes.

Application of the QFD as a design approach to ensure comfort in using hand tools: can the design team complete the House of Quality appropriately?

Quality Function Deployment is proposed as an effective design method to integrate ergonomics needs and comfort into hand tool design because it explicitly addresses the translation of customer needs into engineering characteristics. A crucial step during QFD concerns the linking of engineering characteristics to customer needs in the House of Quality by the design team. It is generally assumed (looking at all the QFD success stories) that design teams can accurately predict the correlations between customer needs and engineering characteristics (also referred to as "Whats"/"Hows" correlations). This paper explicitly tests this assumption by comparing the "Whats"/"Hows" correlations estimated by a design team with those observed in a systematic user evaluation study, which has not been done before. Testing the assumption is important, because inaccurate estimates may lead to ergonomically ineffective (re)design of hand tools and a waste of company resources. Results revealed that the design team's correlation estimates were not as accurate as is generally assumed. Twenty-five percent of the estimates differed significantly with those observed in the user evaluation study. Thus, QFD is a useful method to assist design teams in designing ergonomically more comfortable hand tools, but only on the condition that the correlations between customer needs and engineering characteristics are validated, preferably by means of a systematic user evaluation study.

Assessment of knife sharpness by means of a cutting force measuring system

Following a brief description of the problem of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) in the meat industry and use of knives, this paper presents a study of the influence of the main intrinsic technical characteristics of a knife on its cutting performance. This study prompted design of a specific system for measuring initial cutting capacity and cutting edge retention. This design process preceded research into test conditions (cutting speed, sample nature and thickness, knife inclination angle, etc.) offering optimum test bench operation. This equipment was then used to study the influence of blade inclination angle, steel grade and sharpening angle on cutting performance. It has been shown that cutting force varies with blade inclination. Use of knives with curved blades and/or a blade inclined with respect to the knife handle is therefore preferred in relation to our cutting force reduction objective. It has also been shown that choices are in fact governed by compromises in relation to other parameters (steel grade and edge angle). These observations confirm the need to set up suitable training of knife users to achieve best possible cutting performance.
