Development and psychometric analysis of the smombie scale for adolescents

PURPOSE

Adolescent pedestrian accidents are increasing because of the "smombie" phenomenon, referring to pedestrians who are distracted by their smartphones and become unaware of their surroundings. In the field of nursing, this phenomenon can negatively affect adolescents' health and well-being. We developed the "smombie scale for adolescents" and examined its psychometric properties.

DESIGN AND METHODS

We revised five items and the response scale of an existing smombie scale for adults based on cognitive interviews and content validity test, and included guiding descriptions for adolescents. Using the revised scale, we surveyed 430 adolescents from South Korea to assess construct validity through confirmatory factor analysis. To review group validity, a logistic regression was conducted using responses to the item on whether participants experienced accidents related to smartphone usage on the street or sidewalk.

RESULTS

The 15 items in the four-factor structure, which was validated using confirmatory factor analysis, demonstrated: a chi-square value (p) of 232.63 (< 0.001), root mean square error of approximation of 0.06, goodness of fit index of 0.93, and Tucker-Lewis index of 0.94. The scale's Cronbach's α was 0.85, indicating good internal consistency. Logistic regression results considering actual accident occurrence showed that Factor 1 (perceived risk) and Factor 3 (pending instant message) were significantly correlated with smombie-related accidents.

CONCLUSIONS

The smombie scale for adolescents demonstrated adequate construct and group validity, and good reliability.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

Its application can yield valuable insights into the effectiveness of pediatric nurses' educational and preventative efforts related to the smombie phenomenon in adolescents.

Development and Psychometric Validation of Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs BCC-20) for Assessing Comfort during Chemotherapy in Breast Cancer Patients

OBJECTIVE

The study aims to develop and psychometric validate Patient-Reported Outcomes Measures for Assessing Comfort during Chemotherapy in Breast Cancer Patients (PROMs BCC-20).

METHODS

This study was conducted in two phases: 1) items were developed from the literature review and in-depth interviews, and 2) Exploratory factor analysis (EFA), Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and concurrent validity were performed to evaluate construct validity. The participants were cancer stage I-IIIC, adult females, performance status was assessed by Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) score ≤ 2 after receiving the second cycle of adjuvant chemotherapy and selected by purposive sampling method. For each group of EFA and CFA was 250 participants.

RESULT

Five hundred breast cancer patients during adjuvant chemotherapy were recruited from three tertiary cancer centers. A succession of EFA using principal axis factoring with Promax rotation revealed four dimensions yielded a seven factors solution, explaining a 60.07 percent variance. CFA contains 20 items with five factors; 1) social function, four items; 2) digestive function, three items; 3) emotional function, six items; 4) environmental function, three items; and 5) sleep quality, four items via maximum likelihood with bootstrapping indicated a good fit model (SRMR = 0.045, RMSEA = 0.040, CFI = 0.947, and TLI = 0.935). The Cronbach's alpha of 0.86 demonstrated strong internal consistency reliability. Pearson's correlation coefficient showed acceptable criterion validity.

CONCLUSION

The PROMS BCC-20 provides good psychometric properties and practical patients' direct reports of comfort in breast cancer patients during chemotherapy. The PROMs BCC-20 should be standardized for comfort measurement and tailor-made nursing care to provide patient satisfaction and good nursing outcomes.

Development and psychometric properties of the social adjustment scale for youth cancer survivors in South Korea

Objective

We developed a new scale-the Social Adjustment Scale for Youth Cancer Survivors-and examined its psychometric properties.

Methods

In the scale's development stage, preliminary items were constructed based on the results of a concept analysis of the hybrid model, literature review, and interviews. These items were then reviewed through content validity and cognitive interviews. In the validation stage, 136 survivors were recruited from two children's cancer centers in Seoul, South Korea. An exploratory factor analysis was performed to identify a set of constructs, and validity and reliability were tested.

Results

Starting with 70 items constructed through literature review and interviews with youth survivors, the final scale comprised 32 items. The exploratory factor analysis identified four domains-namely, role achievement in one's present position, harmony in relationships, disclosure and acceptance of cancer history, and preparation and expectation for future roles. Correlations with quality of life indicated good convergent validity (r ​= ​0.82, P ​< ​0.001). The Cronbach's α of the overall scale was 0.95, indicating excellent internal consistency; and the intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.94 (P ​< ​0.001), suggesting high test-retest reliability.

Conclusions

The Social Adjustment Scale for Youth Cancer Survivors exhibited acceptable psychometric properties in measuring the social adjustment of youth cancer survivors. It can be used to identify youths facing difficulty in adjusting to society after treatment and to investigate the effect of interventions implemented to promote social adjustment among youth cancer survivors. Future research is needed to examine the applicability of the scale in patients across diverse cultural backgrounds and healthcare systems.
