Abstract
BACKGROUND The ability to regulate one's emotional state is an important predictor of several behaviors such as reframing a challenging situation to reduce anger or anxiety, concealing visible signs of sadness or fear, or focusing on reasons to feel happy or calm. This capacity is referred to as emotion regulation. Deficits in this ability can adversely affect one's adaptive coping, thus are associated with a variety of other psychopathological symptoms, including but not limited to depression, borderline personality disorder, substance use disorders, eating disorders, and somatoform disorders. METHODS The present study examined emotion regulation in relation to the virtue-based psychosocial adaptation model (V-PAM). 595 participants were clustered based on their Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) score, producing two clusters (i.e., high functioning vs. low functioning). Then, emotion regulation group membership was discriminated by using five V-PAM virtue constructs, including courage, integrity, practical wisdom, committed action, and emotional transcendence. RESULTS Results show that five virtues contribute to differentiating group membership. Practical wisdom was the strongest contributor, followed by integrity, emotional transcendence, committed action, and courage. Predictive discriminant analysis was conducted and 71% of cases were correctly classified. A discussion of the relationship between emotion regulation and virtues was elaborated. CONCLUSION The concept of virtue holds significant importance in the comprehension of an individual's capacity to regulate their emotions, meriting future study.

Abstract
This study examined the stability of psychological well-being in people who have experienced a neurological event resulting in focal brain damage. Evidence suggests that psychological well-being is largely stable in healthy adult populations. However, whether such stability exists in neurological patients with acquired brain lesions is an open question. Given the trait-like characteristics of psychological well-being, we hypothesized that psychological well-being would be stable in neurological patients who are in the chronic epoch of recovery (≥3 months after the neurological event). Eighty participants (women = 40; age: M = 56, standard deviation ( SD) = 13) completed the Ryff Scales of Psychological Well-Being (PWBS) twice between 2016 and 2020 (Time 1 [T1] and Time 2 [T2]). The Ryff Scales measure various facets of well-being, including autonomy, environmental mastery, personal growth, positive relations with others, purpose in life, and self-acceptance. Approximately half of participants completed their T2 assessment during the COVID-19 pandemic, creating an opportunity to investigate the effects of the pandemic on the stability of psychological well-being in a neurological population that may be particularly vulnerable to reduced well-being in this context. Pearson correlations and within-sample t-tests were conducted to examine the stability of self-reported well-being over time. Test–retest correlations ranged from .71 to .87, and no significant differences in well-being emerged across the two time points. Significant correlations between T1 and T2 were also evident in the subsample of participants who completed their second assessment during the COVID-19 pandemic. These findings provide evidence that long-term psychological well-being is remarkably reliable and consistent over time in patients who have experienced a major neurological event, even when an unprecedented global event occurred between measurement epochs. Treatment implications of these findings are discussed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the patients' experiences on character strengths that Chinese patients experience after the diagnosis of breast cancer. DESIGN A qualitative, exploratory study using semistructured interviews based on the patients' lived experience after being diagnosed with breast cancer. Ethics approval was granted. Interviews were audiorecorded and transcribed verbatim. Values in Action Classification of Strengths provided conceptual framework for analysing strengths. Directed content analysis based on the classification of strengths and framework analysis were used to analyse transcribed data. The Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research guideline was followed. SETTING The Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University and Henan Provincial Cancer Hospital in China. PARTICIPANTS Adult patients over 18 years, diagnosed with breast cancer between October 2019 and December 2020 were recruited. We used purposive sample method to collected data from 24 participants diagnosed with breast cancer. RESULTS Six themes (virtues) emerged from our analysis. In addition, two new subthemes (character strengths) emerged in this study, selflessness and pragmatism, respectively. Patients with breast cancer described a large repertoire of character strengths they used or wished for during survivorship, including gratitude, hope, humility, kindness, humour, honesty and forgiveness. Cultural values (eg, collectivism, familyism, Confucianism and Buddhist beliefs) helped structure the experiences of Chinese patients' character strengths. Patients wanted their character strengths to be more noticed, appreciated and encouraged by others and reported their psychological trajectory of using personal strengths. CONCLUSION The findings indicated that patients with breast cancer believing character strengths are important to them. Medical staff should pay more attention to motivating and cultivating character strengths of patients with breast cancer. Attention to make strength-based practices workable in clinical health promotion programmes is necessary. The healthcare system should develop tailored individualised psychological services that specifically address patients' needs for the application of personalised character strengths. Abstract
Positive psychological constructs such as reasons for living, self-esteem and resilience have previously been shown to act as protective psychological barriers against negative psychological outcomes, including suicide ideation in both clinical populations and the general population. This study aims to explore the positive psychological constructs of reasons for living, self-esteem, resilience and their relationship with suicide ideation and predictors of suicide ideation (depression, hopelessness) for N = 50 people who have a severe TBI and are currently receiving community rehabilitation at Liverpool Brain Injury Rehabilitation Unit (LBIRU), NSW. Results indicated good reliability for the use of the RFLI with people who have TBI, with the most frequently endorsed subscale (range 0-5) being "survival and coping beliefs" (4.7 ± 1.0) and the least frequently being "fear of suicide" (2.2 ± 1.1). The shortened version of the RFLI (BRFLI) also displayed good reliability. Positive psychological constructs (reasons for living, resilience, self-esteem) were all significantly inversely associated with suicide and suicide predictors (depression, hopelessness). This study suggests that positive psychological constructs can act as a buffer against suicide ideation after moderate to severe TBI.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in character strengths for people with disabilities by using an international dataset by the VIA Institiute on Character. Specifically, we aimed to explore (a) the top and bottom five character strengths reported by different disability groups and all people with disabilities more broadly, and (b) group differences in each character strength and total character strengths. The investigator contacted the VIA Institute on Character (http://www.viacharacter.org/) for obtaining the dataset for the current study. After data cleaning, our sample size resulted in 11,699 people with disabilities. Among most people with disabilities, the top five character strengths scores were love of learning, honesty, appreciation of beauty and excellence, kindness, and fairness. The bottom five character strengths scores were self-regulation, perseverance, zest, spirituality, and prudence. Knowing that there is heterogeneity in character strengths across groups gives us a better understanding of the areas that people with different disabilities and conditions might thrive and provides clinicians and practitioners with a more nuanced understanding for how to possibly intervene with their clients. Positive psychiatry and psychology implications are discussed.

Abstract
Purpose Individuals with cognitive communication difficulties after traumatic brain injury (TBI) often experience difficulties with social communication. Humor is a sociolinguistic skill that requires social, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral skills and, when used effectively, may serve to enhance one's social relationships. There is a paucity of research related to the use of humor in individuals with TBI. This study categorizes humor use in individuals with cognitive communication difficulties after TBI and examines the linguistic construction of these humorous exchanges. Method The humorous exchanges of nine individuals who had cognitive communication difficulties after a moderate-to-severe TBI were examined. Conversations were collected from a community-based communication skills group, categorized using thematic analysis methods, and examined linguistically using the discourse analysis tools of systemic functional linguistics. Results All participants demonstrated the ability to use a variety of categories of humor, and discourse analysis methods revealed humor use as a strength for engaging with others. Examples of such engagement include use of humor to elicit attention, assert authority, share information, acknowledge shared difficulties, and demonstrate affiliation toward their communication partners. Conclusions Discourse analysis of humor can provide speech-language pathologists with important information about the linguistic strengths of individuals with cognitive communication difficulties. This has important implications for clinical service provision.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Explore the perceptions and beliefs related to pressure ulcers (PU), their prevention and treatment strategies, in order to discuss potential learning objectives for PU-related therapeutic education in persons with spinal cord injury (SCI). DESIGN Qualitative study, using grounded theory for the analysis of data collected via a questionnaire. SETTING Nine SCI referral centers, inpatient care. PARTICIPANTS 131 persons with SCI were included. 76% were male, and 65% presented with paraplegia. The median age was 48 years (33.5; 58) and median time since injury was 11 years (3; 24.5). 70% had experience with PU. INTERVENTIONS None. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Data collection via an open-ended questionnaire on the representation of PU, its prevention and life experience of having a PU. RESULTS Six categories were identified: (1) identifying what might become problematic, (2) daily preventive actions, (3) detecting the early signs, (4) managing the early signs, (5) need for care, (6) experience with PU and being bedridden. Pressure ulcers have dramatic consequences on psychosocial health. Prevention and treatment require self-management skills, such as self-risk assessment abilities, self-detection skills and problem-solving strategies, to optimise daily PU prevention in persons with SCI. CONCLUSION PU prevention tackled by persons with SCI bears some specificities that the physician must take into account in the construction of a self-management program in this high-risk population.

Abstract
Reports of medical students experiencing burnout-related symptoms (e.g., cynicism) have increased in recent years. Little is known about the developmental process of this phenomenon and its relations with signature character strengths and well-being. The aim of this longitudinal analysis was to explore changes in the level of cynicism of medical students while in preclinical education. We further examined how the applicability of signature character strengths and well-being are related to this developmental process. Medical students (N = 99) participated in three online surveys over 3 years during medical school. Latent growth modeling, latent class growth modeling, general mixed modeling was conducted, and post hoc mixed ANOVA, Friedman test and Welch test analyses were examined. The results showed an increase in cynicism among medical students from first to last measurement. Two groups with distinct developmental trajectory patterns of cynicism were identified. Students with high levels of cynicism (high-level group) and students with changing levels of cynicism (increasing group) perceived higher applicability of signature character strengths in private life compared to the study context. Moreover, the high-level group experienced significantly lower psychological well-being (in particular mastery, optimism, and relationship) in their first year of medical education. This explorative study offers a comprehensive understanding of cynicism development in medical students during medical school and its relations to the applicability of signature character strengths and well-being. Prospective replication studies are needed to replicate the results obtained in this study.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Brain injury is considered a chronic condition and the medical model has long been the traditional paradigm underlying rehabilitation programs for people after acquired brain injury (ABI). In recent years, strengths-based approaches have been increasingly proposed, but little has been written about specific psychotherapeutic application in ABI rehabilitation. OBJECTIVE To describe a strengths-based model, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) and its clinical application to individuals with ABI and their families. METHODS The author describes the assumptions, tenets, and principles of SFBT, a competency-based and resource-based model that orients to the future and focuses on strengths and successes. A direct comparison is made between the traditional medical paradigm and the solution-focused paradigm. RESULTS Key ingredients of SFBT are described, including specific strategies, techniques, and its clinical application with individuals with ABI and their families. Limitations around using SFBT and the need for further research with ABI populations are reported. CONCLUSIONS SFBT is a welcome shift away from the problem-saturated stories that underlie traditional rehabilitation approaches. The strengths-based underpinning of SFBT is a promising psychotherapeutic intervention that merits further investigation with ABI populations.

PURPOSE To examine the relationship of character strengths and quality of life (QOL) in persons with multiple sclerosis (MS). Specifically, this study examined the relationship of the 24 character strengths in Peterson and Seligman's model with QOL and three negative effects of MS (disability, fatigue, and depression). It also investigated whether the three negative effects of MS mediate the relationship of each of the character strengths and QOL. METHODS Six hundred and twenty-four individuals with MS completed an online survey measuring character strengths, QOL, as measured by the Leeds Multiple Sclerosis Quality of Life Scale, disability, fatigue, and depression. SPSS was used to complete the correlational analysis, and Hayes' PROCESS macro for SPSS was used to conduct the mediation analyses. RESULTS The strengths endorsed most frequently by the participants were honesty, kindness, and fairness. The least-endorsed strengths were self-regulation, zest, and spirituality. The strengths with the strongest association with QOL were zest, hope, and gratitude. Disability was not found to mediate any of the relationships between character strengths and QOL. Many of the character strengths were associated with QOL both directly and indirectly through fatigue and depression. CONCLUSIONS Many of the character strengths in the Peterson and Seligman model enhance QOL in persons with MS, both directly and through their influence on negative effects of MS. The results provide support for the development of character strengths interventions to impact QOL, both directly and indirectly through improvements to MS-related symptoms such as fatigue and depression.

Abstract
Purpose : The purpose was to examine the role of therapy engagement as a potential mediator for the relationship between neuropsychological performance and functional outcomes. Materials and method : Participants were 94 adults with medically documented ABI recruited from three outpatient rehabilitation clinics at the start of occupational therapy. Participants (57% men) ranged from 18 to 82 in age, with the majority (81%) having completed 12 or more years of education. They completed a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment at baseline. Separately, occupational therapists (OTs) assessed functional independence and disability at baseline and follow up. The OTs also rated the participants' therapy engagement. Results : Therapy engagement predicted functional outcomes and mediated the relationship between neuropsychological performance and outcomes. Moreover, therapy engagement accounted for unique variance in functional outcome, even after accounting for education, comorbid health conditions, emotional distress, apathy, and baseline functional ability. Conclusions : Engagement in therapy is a crucial patient characteristic in successful rehabilitation outcome. Cognitive deficits associated with ABI undermine full engagement in rehabilitation therapy, which in turn diminishes potential gains made in therapy and functional recovery. Neuropsychological assessment can enhance rehabilitation outcomes by identifying characteristics that underlie therapy engagement, which can ultimately be used to maximize the effectiveness of individualized treatment plans. Implications for rehabilitation Neuropsychological assessment can identify cognitive abilities that are strongly related to functional outcomes during occupational therapy for acquired brain injury. Therapy engagement is an important pathway by which neuropsychological impairment predicts functional outcomes after acquired brain injuries.

Abstract
Reliable test scores are essential to interpret the results obtained in statistical analyses correctly. In this study, we used the Values in Action Inventory of Strengths (VIA-IS) as an example of a widely applied assessment instrument to analyze its metric quality in what is known as reliability generalization (RG). In addition, we conducted a meta-analysis of the correlations between character strengths and life satisfaction to examine the potential relationship between the reliability of test scores and the intensity of these correlations. The overall variability of alpha coefficients supports the argument that reliability is sample dependent. Indeed, there were statistically significant mean reliability differences for scores across the 24 scales, with the highest level of reliability observed for Creativity and the lowest for scores on Self-regulation. Significant moderators such as the standard deviation of the scores and the sample type contribute to understand the high variability observed in the reliability estimation. The second meta-analysis showed that Zest, Hope, Gratitude, Curiosity, and Love were the character strengths that were highly related to life satisfaction, while Modesty and Prudence were less related to life satisfaction. Furthermore, the high heterogeneity between samples might be an indicator of the relationship between the variability of reliability of character strengths' scores and the intensity of their correlations with life satisfaction. Those character strengths with high-potential RG are related or unrelated to life satisfaction, whereas character strengths with less-potential RG showed unstable correlation patterns. The results of both studies point out the role of the relationship between the reliability of test scores and substantive studies, such as Pearson's correlations meta-analysis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Strengths-based approaches are increasingly utilized in health care, but little is known about their practical application in rehabilitation with families after pediatric acquired brain injury (ABI). OBJECTIVE To describe a strengths-based model, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) and its clinical application to family intervention for adolescents with ABI. METHODS A literature review highlights a growing movement towards resilience and strengths-based approaches to family intervention after pediatric ABI. The authors introduce the assumptions, tenets, and clinical application of SFBT, which is a competency-based and resource-based model that focuses on family strengths and successes. A direct comparison is made between the traditional medical model and the solution-focused paradigm. RESULTS Key elements of SFBT are described, including specific strategies, techniques, and its clinical application in the Brain Injury Family Intervention for Adolescents (BIFI-A). The BIFI-A, designed for adolescents with ABI and their families, is a 12-session manualized intervention that encompasses education about ABI, skill building, and emotional support. CONCLUSIONS Given the increased interest for research regarding strengths-based approaches in pediatric rehabilitation, the utilization of SFBT with families of adolescents with ABI warrants further attention and investigation. The BIFI-A, with its underpinnings of SFBT, is a promising new family system intervention that also merits further research.

Abstract
PURPOSE Traumatic brain injury (TBI) produces broad-reaching and often persistent challenges that impact an individual’s ability to engage in vocational productivity. Return to work (RTW) rates after TBI are markedly poor and the efficacy of current TBI vocational rehabilitation (VR) practices is unclear. Positive psychology, the practice of fostering positive emotions and traits, offers novel approaches that might enhance the effectiveness of existing TBI VR practices. This article assesses the potential relevance of positive psychology principles and practices to VR for clients recovering from TBI. METHODS A literature search was conducted using the database resources of a large university hospital, including PubMed, ProQuest, PsycINFO, and Web of Science. Content from this search was reviewed and synthesized, including literature on VR for TBI, vocational applications of positive psychology, and general rehabilitation applications of positive psychology. RESULTS Ten guiding principles for positively-informed TBI VR are proposed. Specific positive psychology measures and interventions for improving emotional, social, and cognitive functioning are identified and discussed as they might be applied to TBI VR. CONCLUSIONS Theoretically, positive psychology principles and practices appear to be well suited to improving VR outcomes for individuals with TBI. In addition to examining the feasibility of incorporating positive psychology techniques, future research should examine the impact of positive psychology interventions on RTW rates, job satisfaction, job stability, and other vocational outcomes. With additional investigation, positive psychology measures and interventions may prove to be a beneficial compliment to existing VR practices.

Abstract
Background: There is a growing interest in linking aspects of patient-provider communication to rehabilitation outcomes. However, the field lacks a conceptual understanding on: (a) ‘how’ rehabilitation outcomes can be improved by communication; and (b) through ‘which’ elements in particular. This article elaborates on the conceptual developments toward informing further practice and research. Methods: Existing models of communication in healthcare were adapted to rehabilitation, and its outcomes through a comprehensive literature review. Results: After depicting mediating mechanisms and variables (e.g. therapeutic engagement, adjustment toward disability), this article presents the ‘4 Rehab Communication Elements’ deemed likely to underpin rehabilitation outcomes. The four elements are: (a) knowing the person and building a supportive relationship; (b) effective information exchange and education; (c) shared goal-setting and action planning; and (d) fostering a more positive, yet realistic, cognitive and self-reframing. Discussion: This article describes an unprecedented, outcomes-oriented approach toward the design of rehabilitation communication, which has resulted in the development of a new intervention model: the ‘4 Rehab Communication Elements’. Further trials are needed to evaluate the impact of this whole intervention model on rehabilitation outcomes.
