Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study assessed the CVD risk factors among Filipino women (FW) in Korea and compared them with FW in the Philippines and women in Korea (KW). METHODS A cohort of 504 women from the Filipino Women's Health and Diet Study (FiLWHEL) aged 20-57 years old were age-matched (1:1 ratio) with women from the 2013 National Nutrition Survey in the Philippines and the 2013-2015 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Anthropometric data, blood pressure (BP), lipid and glucose levels were compared across the four populations by calculating the odds ratio (OR)s and 95% confidence interval (CI)s using conditional logistic regression models. RESULTS Compared to KW, FW in Korea and FW in the Philippines were more than 2 and 3 times higher odds of having obesity for BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2 and waist circumference ≥ 88 cm, respectively. However, FW in Korea had the highest odds (OR 5.51, 95% CI 3.18-9.56) of having hypertension compared to KW. FW in the Philippines had the highest odds of having dyslipidemia (compared to KW, total cholesterol ≥ 200 mg/dL: OR 8.83, 95% CI 5.30-14.71; LDL-C ≥ 130 mg/dL: OR 3.25, 95% CI 2.13-4.98; and triglyceride ≥ 150 mg/dL: OR 2.59, 95% CI 1.59-4.22), but FW in Korea and KW had similar prevalence of dyslipidemia. CONCLUSIONS FW in Korea had higher prevalence of obesity and hypertension, with similar prevalence of dyslipidemia compared to KW in this sample. FW in the Philippines had higher prevalence of dyslipidemia compared to FW in Korea. Further prospective studies are warranted to examine the CVD risk factors among continental and native-born Filipino women.

Abstract
Filipino Americans have higher risks for developing cardiovascular disease than many other U.S. minority groups and Caucasians. As a precursor to developing a culturally-relevant physical activity (PA) intervention targeting high-risk Filipino Americans, this study sought to evaluate the energy cost and intensity of Tinikling, or bamboo dance, a popular type of Philippine folk dance. These energy cost values were directly compared to the moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) cut-points commonly used to define the PA guidelines. Twenty-two pairs of Filipino American adults performed five minutes of continuous Tinikling dance to a three-count rhythm and standardized music. Each dancer wore a portable metabolic system to directly assess the oxygen uptake from the last two minutes of dancing. These metabolic data were then transformed to units of metabolic equivalents (METs). Mean METs for all dancers (Mean ± SD; 6.9 ± 1.4 METs; P<0.001), as well as for women (6.9 ± 1.3 METs; P<0.001) and men analyzed separately (7.0 ± 1.0 METs; P<0.001), were significantly higher than both 3.0 and 6.0 MET MVPA cut-points. These results support the use of Tinikling dance with Filipino American adults as a PA intervention tool in future studies, as well as a means to satisfy the guidelines for prescribed weekly PA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dietary biculturalism is an emerging phenomenon among the Filipino immigrant population. Determining the concept of dietary biculturalism on this specific population will unravel some of the obscurities of emerging dietary patterns within the context of cardiovascular risk. PURPOSE The purpose of this article is to provide a concept analysis of dietary biculturalism within the health context of cardiovascular risk using Walker and Avant's method as an organizing framework. METHODS A detailed literature review was performed on the basis of population specificity (Filipinos) use of dietary patterns as variable and theoretical literary models of acculturation. FINDINGS The generalizability of published research on this issue is problematic since researchers have not addressed the unhealthy traditional foods component that one may consume in addition to the Western foods. NURSING IMPLICATIONS Nurse researchers should focus on the detrimental effects of unhealthy traditional foods that may be relevant in explaining some of the cardiovascular risk factors affecting this population. Nurses and practitioners should take care to query not only about the frequency of ethnic food consumption, but also types, and amounts among their Filipino patients.

Abstract
Accumulating evidence suggests that the aggregation of common metabolic conditions (high blood pressure, diabetes and dyslipidemia) is a risk factor for breast cancer. Breast cancer incidence has risen steadily in Asian American women, and whether these metabolic conditions contribute to breast cancer risk in certain Asian American subgroups is unknown. We investigated the role of physician-diagnosed hypertension, high cholesterol and diabetes separately, and in combination, in relation to the risk of breast cancer in a population-based case-control study of 2,167 Asian Americans diagnosed with breast cancer and 2,035 age and ethnicity matched control women in Los Angeles County. Compared to Asian American women who did not have any of the metabolic conditions, those with 1, 2 or 3 conditions showed a steady increase in risk (respective odds ratios were 1.12, 1.42 and 1.62; P trend = 0.001) with adjustment for covariates including body mass index. Similar significant trends were observed in Filipina Americans (P trend = 0.021), postmenopausal women (P trend =0.001), Asian women who were born in the United States (US) (P trend = 0.052) and migrants who have lived in the US for at least 20 years (P trend = 0.004), but not migrants who lived in the US for <20 years (P trend = 0.64). These results suggest that westernization in lifestyle (diet and physical inactivity) and corresponding increase in adiposity have contributed to the rising prevalence of these metabolic conditions, which in turn, are associated with an increase in breast cancer.

Abstract
Filipino American women (FAW) have high incidence of coronary heart disease and high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). The distribution of rs11206510 proprotein-convertase subtilisin-kexin type 9 (PCSK9) and rs1122608 low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), known for genetic influences on LDL-C, is unknown in this population. The objective of this study was to examine the genetic determinants of LDL-C, their association with LDL-C, and effects of statins on LDL-C given the genetic determinants in this high-risk population. Data were obtained from the FAW Cardiovascular Study ( N = 338) of women ages 40 to 65 years from four major U.S. cities between 2011 and 2013. Roche Modular methodology and Luminex-oligonucleotide ligation assay procedure were used for allele frequency, genotype, LDL-C, and lipid analysis. Analysis of variance was used to determine differences between genotype groups. Genotype and statin effect on LDL-C were tested using the generalized linear model procedure of SAS. The distribution of rs11206510 PCSK9 genotypes was 88% TT, 11% TC, and 1% CC, and the rs1122608 LDLR genotype distribution was 83% GG, 17% GT, and 0% TT. These SNPs showed no association with mean LDL-C in this cohort. FAW on statin medications had lower LDL levels regardless of their PCSK9 or LDLR genotypes. Most FAW had a gain-of-function allele of PCSK9 and LDLR. This predominance in FAW cohort may account for the high percentage of subjects with elevated LDL-C. In a population at high risk for hypercholesterolemia, optimal treatment with statins should be considered where appropriate.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Filipino Americans are the second largest Asian subgroup in the United States, and were found to have the highest prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D) compared to all Asian subgroups and non-Hispanic whites. In addition to genetic factors, risk factors for Filipinos that contribute to this health disparity include high sedentary rates and high fat diets. However, Filipinos are seriously underrepresented in preventive health research. Research is needed to identify effective interventions to reduce Filipino diabetes risks, subsequent comorbidities, and premature death. OBJECTIVE The overall goal of this project is to assess the feasibility and potential efficacy of the Filipino Americans Go4Health Weight Loss Program (PilAm Go4Health). This program is a culturally adapted weight loss lifestyle intervention, using digital technology for Filipinos with T2D, to reduce their risk for metabolic syndrome. METHODS This study was a 3-month mobile phone-based pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) weight loss intervention with a wait list active control, followed by a 3-month maintenance phase design for 45 overweight Filipinos with T2D. Participants were randomized to an intervention group (n=22) or active control group (n=23), and analyses of the results are underway. The primary outcome will be percent weight change of the participants, and secondary outcomes will include changes in waist circumference, fasting plasma glucose, glycated hemoglobin A1c, physical activity, fat intake, and sugar-sweetened beverage intake. Data analyses will include descriptive statistics to describe sample characteristics and a feasibility assessment based on recruitment, adherence, and retention. Chi-square, Fisher's exact tests, t-tests, and nonparametric rank tests will be used to assess characteristics of randomized groups. Primary analyses will use analysis of covariance and linear mixed models to compare primary and secondary outcomes at 3 months, compared by arm and controlled for baseline levels. RESULTS Recruitment was completed in January, 2016, and participant follow-up continued through June, 2016. At baseline, mean age was 57 years, 100% (45/45) of participants self-identified as Filipinos, and the cohort was comprised of 17 males and 28 females. Overall, participants were obese with a baseline mean body mass index of 30.2 kg/m2 (standard deviation 4.9). The majority of participants were immigrants (84%, 38/45), with 47% (21/45) living in the United States for more than 10 years. One third of all participants (33%, 15/45) had previously used a pedometer. CONCLUSIONS This study will provide preliminary evidence to determine if the PilAm Go4Health weight loss lifestyle intervention is feasible, and if the program demonstrates potential efficacy to reduce risks for metabolic syndrome in Filipinos with T2D. Positive results will lend support for a larger RCT to evaluate the effectiveness of the PilAm Go4Health intervention for Filipinos. Abstract
Acculturation, the subsequent changes that occur in one culture after continuous first hand contact with another culture, impacts the dietary habits and health risks of individuals. This study examines the acculturation, dietary habits and anthropometric measurements in a sample of 210 first generation Filipino American immigrants in New Jersey (NJ). Acculturation was measured using the Short Acculturation Scale for Filipino Americans (ASASFA). Dietary acculturation was measured using the Dietary Acculturation Questionnaire for Filipino Americans (DAQFA) and dietary intake was determined using the Block's Brief Food Frequency Questionnaire (BFFQ). Anthropometric measurements were obtained including weight, height and waist circumference. Acculturation had a significant negative relationship with Filipino Dietary acculturation. Western dietary acculturation was significantly correlated with caloric intake (r(208) = 0.193, p < 0.01), percentage fat intake (r(208) = 0.154, p < 0.05), percentage carbohydrate intake (r(208) = -0.172, p < 0.05), Body Mass Index (BMI) (r(208) = 0.216, p < 0.01) and waist circumference (r(208) = 0.161, p < 0.01). There was no significant correlation between Filipino dietary acculturation, dietary intake and anthropometric measurements. The results showed that Filipino American immigrants have increased risks including increased BMI, waist circumference and increased fat intake. Over all, this research highlighted some dietary changes and their effects on dietary intake and health status.

Abstract
PURPOSE Filipino Americans (FAs) are at high risk for cardiovascular disease. The purpose of this literature review is to enhance understanding of cardiovascular health among FAs. DESIGN Databases searched: MEDLINE (via PubMed), Google Scholar, Journals@OVID, and EBSCO databases including CINAHL Complete. Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition, Academic Search Complete, and Biological Abstracts 1969-Present. Key terms used: FAs and cardiovascular disease. Criteria for inclusion: peer-reviewed empirical articles published in English. FINDINGS/RESULTS A total of 51 studies were identified and 27 were selected for the review based on relevance to nursing care for FAs. Three main themes emerged from the literature reviewed: risk factors and disease prevalence, health promotion, and health beliefs/practices. DISCUSSION/CONCLUSIONS The literature review identified that FAs were at high risk for cardiovascular disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome at lower BMI levels. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE Health care providers should implement prevention strategies and interventions for the FA population to ensure the best outcomes.
