Impact of Social Support on Physical Activity in Adults With Heart Failure: The Mediating Effect of Resilience

This study aimed to evaluate the impact of resilience and social support on physical activity in adults with heart failure (HF) and to explore the mediating effect of resilience on the relationship between social support and physical activity. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 197 adults with HF (n = 197) from two outpatient departments for cardiovascular diseases. Resilience was assessed using the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, social support using the Social Support Rating Scale, and physical activity using the short form of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Social support and resilience were significantly associated with physical activity in adults with HF. Resilience partially mediated the relationship between social support and physical activity, and the mediating effect accounted for 25.93% of the total effect of social support on physical activity. These findings contribute to the development of tailored interventions by targeting these two factors to increase physical activity levels in adults with HF.

Evaluation of the "partnership care model" on quality of life and activity of daily living in stroke patients: A randomized clinical trial

BACKGROUND

Stroke is a widespread chronic disease which remains a serious problem for public health and is the cause of major disability and death in adults. Despite valuable efforts, these patients still need new care programs for recovery and rehabilitation.

AIM

The aim of this study is to determine the effect of the partnership care model (PCM) on quality of life (QOL) and activities of daily living (ADL) in stroke participants.

METHOD

The study is a randomized clinical trial carried out in an educational and therapeutic center in 2019. Sixty-seven participants (allocated randomly in intervention and control groups) with cerebrovascular accident who had hospitalization histories were selected. Data collection instruments were the Stroke-Specific QOL scale and Lawton questionnaires. The care plan was developed and implemented for the intervention group after evaluating and recording basic information including demographic variables, care needs, and problems identified in the first PCM-based stage. Ethics approval was obtained from the University / Regional Research Ethics Committee (IR.NIMAD.REC.1397.236).

RESULTS

The results show that the mean scores of the QOL significantly increased after the intervention in the intervention group (before = 130.80; 3 months = 172.19; 6 months = 205.29) compared to the control group (before = 150; 3 months = 144.86; 6 months = 160.66). Also, the mean scores of the ADL significantly increased after the intervention in the intervention group (before = 1.96; 3 months = 3.64; 6 months = 4.87) compared to the control group (p < .05). The effect size is equal to 0.501 and 0.245 for QOL and ADL, respectively.

CONCLUSION

The findings show that the care program based on a PCM recovered the QOL and ADL of stroke participants more than other interventions.

A review of 17 years of application of partnership care model on the consequences of chronic diseases: Describing and assessing the quality of the methodology of papers

Background : Regarding the widespread prevalence of chronic diseases, nurses need to understand the choices, priorities, and abilities of patients in reality, their communication, and the social context in order to play their professional role and responsibility. This review study was conducted with two purposes: determining the effect of partnership-care-model (PCM) on the outcomes of chronic diseases, and describing and assessing the quality of methodology of published papers in the field. Methods : The systematic review was conducted from inception to the year 2019. A systematic search was conducted using PRISMA guidelines to retrieve all national and international PCM studies. To assess the quality of the methodology of studies, four instruments were used, including JADAD, Consort, New Castle-Ottawa, and Cochrane. Results : In the initial search, 11509 papers were retrieved, which according to the PRISMA guidelines, 23 relevant papers remained. The results of the reviewed papers indicated the effectiveness of the PCM. Describing and assessing the quality of the methodology of published papers of PCM was at an acceptable level. The final papers were classified and reviewed according to the authors, year, sampling characteristics, data collection methods, and final PCM conclusion. Conclusion : According to the review of the studies and their effectiveness in the different outcomes, also, the acceptable quality of the methodology of published papers, it can be concluded that the PCM is an effective, context-based, simple, efficient, and reliable model and has the ability to be used in promoting and improving the various dimensions of chronic diseases.

Relationship Between Praying and Self-Care in Elderly with Heart Failure: A Cross-Sectional Study in West of Iran

Given the prevalence of Heart Failure (HF), the current study was conducted, aiming to determine the relationship between praying and self-care in the patients with HF in Iran in 2018. The type of the study is descriptive-analytical, which has been conducted in patient group of more than 65, suffering HF. The population of study has consisted of HF patients, referring to Shahid Mostafa Khomeini Hospital of Ilam province. Therefore, the patients, referring to this hospital for medical treatments, were included in this study. The study data were analyzed using software SPSS16. The findings showed there was a significant relationship between the severity of prayer and the demographic variables, such as gender (p < 0.004), education (p < 0.03), and duration of the disease (p < 0.001). The findings also showed that there was a relationship between self-care and gender (p < 0.001), education (p < 0.004), and duration of disease (p < 0.001). Also, the findings showed that there is a relationship between self-care and prayer (r = 727), so that increasing the amount of prayer will increase self-care. The mean (SD) of total prayer is 167.33 (10.49) and total self-care is 35.86 (10.60). With the increase in the rate of praying, their self-care increased. Based upon this, religious interventions are recommended to be held for this group of patients, focusing on praying.

[Development and Effects of a Heart Health Diary for Self-Care Enhancement of Patients with Heart Failure]

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study was to develop a heart health diary to promote self-care ability among patients with heart failure (HF), and to identify the diary's effect on self-care adherence, self-efficacy, and physical activity.

METHODS

A randomized control-group pretestposttest design was adopted using block randomization. A calender-typed health diary was developed and it included a self-care checklist and education information on HF management. The experimental group were given guided counseling and education for 8 weeks and wrote a daily health diary during that period. Data were collected from the outpatient department of a tertiary medical center from February to April 2016. To verify the hypotheses, data for the experimental group (n=28) and control group (n=33) were analysed using the independent t-test with SPSS/WIN 21.0.

RESULTS

At the end of 8 weeks the experimental group had significantly higher scores for self-care adherence (t=-2.48, p=.016) and exercise related self-efficacy (t=-3.44, p=.001) compared to the control group.

CONCLUSION

The findings show that the application of a patient-directed heart health diary is an effective nursing intervention for improving HF patients' self-care adherence and exercise self-efficacy. Strategies to promote dietary self-efficacy are necessary along with further studies including repeated research with an increasing intervention period. Healthcare providers need to encourage the utilization of a health diary for HF patients as a tool for evaluation and for implementation that leads to self-care.

Correlation between inner strength and health-promoting behaviors in women with heart failure

Introduction

Inner strength is a factor for mental health and well-being and, consequently, a dynamic component of holistic healing. Health-promoting behaviors are appropriate activities to improve health status and prevent the progression of the functional defect resulting from heart failure. The present study aimed to determine the correlation between inner strength and health-promoting behaviors in women with heart failure referred to hospitals affiliated with Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences (SBMU) in 2013.

Methods

In this cross-sectional study, 145 women with hearth failure were selected through convenient sampling from the clients referred to hospitals affiliated with SBMU. The data collection tool included a three-section questionnaire of personal characteristics, inner strength, and health-promoting life profile II (HPLP II). The data analysis used descriptive statistical tests and Pearson correlation coefficient through SPSS version 20.

Results

A direct significant correlation was found between inner strength and all dimensions of health-promoting behaviors and overall health-promoting behaviors (p=0.000) as well as between all dimensions of inner strength (except for the dimension of knowing and searching with physical activity and the dimension of connectedness with personal accountability in healthcare as well as connectedness with physical activity) with health-promoting behaviors (p=0.000 to p=0008).

Conclusion

To improve the level of health and well-being and reduce the costs of care services in women with health failure, close attention should be paid to developing and empowering their inner strength.
