Inter-relationships of obesity-related eating behavior with depression and anxiety among adults during the COVID-19 pandemic: A network analysis

The relationship between stress, anxiety and eating behavior among Chinese students: a cross-sectional study

Background

The expansion of higher education and the growing number of college students have led to increased awareness of mental health issues such as stress, anxiety, and eating disorders. In China, the educational system and cultural expectations contribute to the stress experienced by college students. This study aims to clarify the role of anxiety as a mediator in the relationship between stress and eating behaviors among Chinese college students.

Methods

This study utilized data from the 2021 Psychology and Behavior Investigation of Chinese Residents, which included 1,672 college students under the age of 25. The analysis methods comprised descriptive statistics, t-tests, Pearson correlation analyses, and mediation effect analysis.

Results

The findings indicate that Chinese college students experience high levels of stress, with long-term stress slightly exceeding short-term stress. Both types of stress were positively correlated with increased anxiety and the adoption of unhealthy eating behaviors. Anxiety was identified as a significant mediator, accounting for 28.3% of the relationship between long-term stress and eating behavior (95% CI = 0.058-0.183). The mediation effect of short-term stress on eating behavior through anxiety was also significant, explaining 61.4% of the total effect (95% CI = 0.185-0.327).

Conclusion

The study underscores the importance of stress management and mental health services for college students. It recommends a comprehensive approach to reducing external pressures, managing anxiety, and promoting healthy eating behaviors among college students. Suggestions include expanding employment opportunities, providing career guidance, enhancing campus and societal support for holistic development, strengthening mental health services, leveraging artificial intelligence technologies, educating on healthy lifestyles, and implementing targeted health promotion programs.

Network analysis of the urban-rural differences in depressive symptoms among older adults with multiple chronic conditions: Evidence from a national survey

BACKGROUND

Evidence on the differences in depressive symptoms among older adults with multiple chronic conditions (MCCs) in urban and rural areas is limited.

METHODS

Measures of depressive symptoms (Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale-10) and demographic factors (age, gender, and urban-rural distribution) were used.

RESULTS

A total of 4021 older adults with MCCs were included in this study. Significant differences were observed in both network global strength (Urban: 3.989 vs. Rural: 3.703, S = 0.286, p = 0.003) and network structure (M = 0.139, p = 0.002) between urban and rural residents.

CONCLUSIONS

The study highlights the need for region-specific approaches to understanding and addressing depression and holds the potential to enhance understanding of the psychological health status of older adults with MCCs in urban and rural settings.

Network analysis for inter-relationships of the suboptimal health status with depression and anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic: A perspective of predictive, preventive, and personalized health

BACKGROUND

The Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has had a profound impact on suboptimal health status, depression, and anxiety, necessitating a comprehensive understanding of their inter-relationships at the national level. This study aims to investigate the inter-relationships among suboptimal health status, depression, and anxiety using a network analysis approach.

METHODS

We conducted a national survey between June 20 and August 31, 2022. Three network models were constructed and analyzed to independently examine the inter-relationships among suboptimal health status, depression, and anxiety.

RESULTS

A total of 26,152 participants were included in this study. The study network analysis indicated that item 9 (i.e., Slow response) exhibited the highest node strength within the suboptimal health status questionnaire-short form (SHSQ-SF) network, followed by item 5 (i.e., Breathlessness at rest). Additionally, positive correlations were observed between depression and anxiety severity and most of the SHSO-SF items.

CONCLUSIONS

This study provided valuable insights into inter-relationships between suboptimal health status, depression, and anxiety, informing the development of comprehensive intervention strategies for the general population. These findings have important implications for promoting the well-being and mental health of individuals during and beyond the COVID-19 pandemic.

Traffic-related pollution and symptoms of depression and anxiety among Chinese adults: A population-based study

BACKGROUND

Limited understanding exists regarding the associations of traffic-related pollution with depression and anxiety symptoms in individuals residing within low- and middle-income countries.

METHODS

Data for this study were extracted from the Psychology and Behavior Investigation of Chinese Residents (PBICR) survey, implemented between June 20 and August 31, 2023. We determined residential proximity to major roadways through self-reports and evaluated depression symptoms using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), along with anxiety symptoms assessed through the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7). We examined the associations between residential proximity to major roadways and depression and anxiety symptoms using logistic regressions and generalized linear models, while controlling for potential confounding variables.

RESULTS

This study comprised a total of 22,723 participants. The adjusted odds ratios (OR) for depression symptoms were 1.34 (95 % confidence interval (CI) 1.20, 1.51), 1.29 (95 % CI 1.17, 1.43), 1.34 (95 % CI 1.20, 1.49), and 1.32 (95 % CI 1.17, 1.49) among individuals residing within <50 m, 50-100 m, 101-200 m, and 201-300 m, respectively, in comparison to those residing >300 m from a major roadway. Individuals residing <50 m, 50-100 m, 101-200 m, and 201-300 m from a major roadway exhibited adjusted OR for anxiety symptoms of 1.49 (95 % CI 1.30, 1.69), 1.21 (95 % CI 1.07, 1.37), 1.38 (95 % CI 1.21, 1.56), and 1.38 (95 % CI 1.20, 1.59), respectively, in contrast to those residing >300 m.

CONCLUSIONS

This study provides valuable insights into the associations between environmental factors and mental health. The findings underscore the importance of integrating environmental considerations into comprehensive mental health frameworks, especially for individuals residing near high-traffic areas.
