Experimental measurements and Monte Carlo calculations of dosimetric parameters of the IRA1-103Pd brachytherapy source

Design and optimizing a novel ocular plaque brachytherapy with dual-core of 103Pd and 106Ru

In recent decades, eye plaques of brachytherapy have been extensively used as primary treatment as well as a complementary treatment for ocular cancer. The purpose of this study is the development of the eye plaque brachytherapy throughout a new design of eye plaque by combining the COMS plaque and the CCB BEBIG plaque loaded by IRA1-¹⁰³Pd and ¹⁰⁶Ru, respectively. A new dual-core plaque with a diameter of 20 mm was designed in the way that the BEBIG plaque with a diameter of 20 mm loaded by ¹⁰⁶Ru plate is attached to the COMS plaque with a diameter of 20 mm loaded by 24 of IRA1-¹⁰³Pd seeds. Dose calculations for the new plaque were performed by using the MCNP5 code. Dose calculations of dual-core plaque including ¹⁰³Pd seeds (gamma) and ¹⁰⁶Ru plate (beta) were separately done for the sake of MCNP constraints in gamma and beta particle transfer simultaneously. The new dual-core plaque delivers a much higher dose rate to the tumor compared with every single plaque, while the dose rate reached to healthy tissues is slightly higher than each plaque separately. Of course, this is acceptable because the treatment time reduces and subsequently the error in radiation therapy reduces.

A review of brachytherapy physical phantoms developed over the last 20 years: clinical purpose and future requirements

Within the brachytherapy community, many phantoms are constructed in-house, and less commercial development is observed as compared to the field of external beam. Computational or virtual phantom design has seen considerable growth; however, physical phantoms are beneficial for brachytherapy, in which quality is dependent on physical processes, such as accuracy of source placement. Focusing on the design of physical phantoms, this review paper presents a summary of brachytherapy specific phantoms in published journal articles over the last twenty years (January 1, 2000 - December 31, 2019). The papers were analyzed and tabulated by their primary clinical purpose, which was deduced from their associated publications. A substantial body of work has been published on phantom designs from the brachytherapy community, but a standardized method of reporting technical aspects of the phantoms is lacking. In-house phantom development demonstrates an increasing interest in magnetic resonance (MR) tissue mimicking materials, which is not yet reflected in commercial phantoms available for brachytherapy. The evaluation of phantom design provides insight into the way, in which brachytherapy practice has changed over time, and demonstrates the customised and broad nature of treatments offered.

EGSnrc-based depth-dependent photon energy response and phantom scatter corrections for low-energy brachytherapy sources

In the present study, beam quality correction, [Formula: see text], and phantom scatter correction, k_phan(r), for low-energy brachytherapy sources, ¹³¹Cs, ¹²⁵I, and ¹⁰³Pd, are calculated using the Monte Carlo-based EGSnrc code system as a function of the distance along the transverse axis of the source. The solid-state detectors investigated are diamond, LiF, Li₂B₄O₇, Al₂O₃, and radiochromic films, such as HS, EBT, EBT2, EBT3, RTQA, XRT, and XRQA. The solid phantoms investigated are polystyrene, PMMA, virtual water, solid water, plastic water (LR), A150, RW1, RW3, and WE210. For a given detector and brachytherapy source, [Formula: see text] is independent of distance in the water phantom. Meanwhile, for a given detector, k_phan(r) depends on the distance from the source for the investigated solid phantoms. Moreover, the k_phan(r) values do not change with the detector type for sources ¹³¹Cs, ¹²⁵I, and ¹⁰³Pd at all distances. The LR and A150 phantoms are water equivalent for the investigated distances of 1-5 cm. The phantoms including solid water, virtual water, and WE210 are not water-equivalent for distances beyond 1 cm. Furthermore, PMMA, polystyrene, RW1, and RW3 are not water equivalent.

Dosimetric aspects of 166Ho brachytherapy biodegradable glass seed

The purpose of this study is to perform absorbed dose calculations based on Monte Carlo simulations for a novel beta emitter bioglass Ho-166 seed which is proposed for treating small hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs). The bioactive glass seed has been developed by use of the sol-gel method. Monte Carlo simulations were carried out for the seed using the version 5 of the (MCNP) Monte Carlo radiation transport code to investigate the dosimetric parameters recommended by the AAPM Task Group 60 (TG-60). Dose distributions due to the beta and photon radiation were obtained at different radial distances surrounding the source. The dose rate in water at the reference point was calculated to be 6.71 ± 0.4 cGy h(-1) μCi(-1). The anisotropy function values ranging from 0.745 to 1.928 were obtained for radial distances of 0.3-8 mm and polar angles of 0°-90°. The (166)Ho seed source can deliver high radiation doses to the tumor, while the short range of the beta particles limits damage to the adjacent normal tissue.

Experimental measurements and Monte Carlo calculations for (103)Pd dosimetry of the 12 mm COMS eye plaque

Monte Carlo simulations and TLD dosimetry have been performed to determine the dose distributions along the central axis of the 12 mm COMS eye plaques loaded with IRA1-(103)Pd seeds. Several simulations and measurements have been employed to investigate the effect of Silastic insert and air in front of the eye on dosimetry results along the central axis of the plaque and at some critical ocular structures. Measurements were performed using TLD-GR200A circular chip dosimeters in a PMMA eye phantom. The central axis TLD chips locations were arranged in one central column of eye phantom, in 3 mm intervals. The off-axis TLD chips locations were arranged in three off-axis columns around the central axis column. Version 5 of the MCNP code was also used to evaluate the dose distribution around the plaque. The presence of the Silastic insert results in dose reduction of 14% at 5 mm; also about 7% dose reduction appears at the interface point, due to the air presence and lack of the scattering condition. The overall dosimetric parameters for the COMS eye plaque loaded with new palladium seeds are similar to a commercial widely used seed such as Theragenics200. As the dose calculations under TG-43 assumptions do not consider the effect of the plaque backing and Silastic insert for accurate dosimetry, it's suggested to apply the effect of the eye plaque materials and air on dosimetry results along the central axis of the plaque and at some critical ocular structures.

Thermoluminescent and Monte Carlo dosimetry of IR06-103Pd brachytherapy source

This work presents experimental dosimetry results for a new P103d brachytherapy seed, in accordance with the AAPM TG‐43U1 recommendation that all new low‐energy interstitial brachytherapy seeds should undergo one Monte Carlo (MC) and at least one experimental dosimetry characterization. Measurements were performed using TLD‐GR200A circular chip dosimeters using standard methods employing thermoluminescent dosimeters in a Perspex phantom. The Monte Carlo N‐particle (MCNP) code, version 5 was used to evaluate the dose‐rate distributions around this model P103d source in water and Perspex phantoms. The consensus value for dose‐rate constant of the IR06‐P103d source was found equal to 0.690 cG⋅h−1⋅U−1. The anisotropy function, F(r, θ), and the radial dose function, gL(r), of the seed were measured in Perspex phantom and calculated in both Perspex and liquid water phantom. The measured values were also found in good agreement with corresponding MC calculations.
