Application of TDCR-Geant4 modeling to standardization of 63Ni

Determination of the activity and nuclear decay data of 157Tb

Terbium-157 was radiochemically extracted from an irradiated tantalum target. Since the resulting material contained a significant impurity of 158Tb, 157Tb was isotopically purified using laser resonance ionization at the RISIKO mass separator in Mainz and then implanted on an aluminum (Al) foil. The implanted 157Tb was measured by two different calibrated gamma-ray spectrometers to determine photon emission rates. After dissolving the Al foil, a high purity 157Tb solution was obtained. The corresponding activity concentration was determined with a low relative uncertainty of 0.52% through a combination of liquid scintillation counting using the TDCR method and 4π(X,e)(LS)-(X,γ)(CeBr3) coincidence counting. By combining the results from all measurement techniques, emission intensities for K X-rays and gamma-rays were derived and found to be 16.05(31)% and 0.0064(2)%, respectively. The probability for K electron capture of the first forbidden non-unique transition to the ground state was determined to be 17.16(35)%. The probabilities for the electron-capture branch to the excited level and the ground state were found to be 0.084(4)% and 99.916(4)%, respectively. A Q+ value of 60.23(18) keV was estimated based on simplified BetaShape calculations, assuming an allowed transition.

Activity standardization of 60Co and 106Ru/106Rh by means of the TDCR method and the importance of the beta spectrum

Atomic and nuclear data represent an important input for the accuracy of primary activity measurements based on liquid scintillation. In particular, the reliability of β-spectrum computation has been investigated for several years through experimental and theoretical studies providing solid evidence for the need to consider the atomic effects. In the present study, the activity standardization of two β-emitting radionuclides (60Co, 106Ru/106Rh) was carried out by means of the 4πβ-γ coincidence and Triple-to-Double Coincidence Ratio (TDCR) methods. The comparison between the activity concentrations given by both primary techniques presents new evidence that a better agreement is obtained when the exchange and screening effects are included in the β-spectra implemented in the model of light emission for TDCR measurements. A new development of a stochastic model based on Geant4 simulations for TDCR calculations is also presented.

A bilateral comparison between LNHB and PTB to determine the activity concentration of the same 125I solution

A bilateral comparison to determine the activity concentration of the same 125I solution was organized. As electron-capture radionuclide with a rather high atomic number, 125I must be regarded as difficult to measure. The situation is partly exacerbated by the fact that some established standardization methods, like photon-photon coincidence counting, can no longer be applied due to the unavailability of appropriate equipment and expertise. One aim of this work is to compare modern liquid scintillation counting methods for the standardization of 125I. Both participating metrology institutes have used their custom-built triple-to-double-coincidence ratio (TDCR) counters and the determined activity concentrations are in excellent agreement even though the ways to analyze the data and to compute counting efficiencies were widely independent. The results also agree with the outcome of 4π-γ counting that was carried out at LNHB. In both laboratories, the measurements were complemented by measurements with several secondary standardization methods which even allow to establish a link to the CCRI(II)-K2.I-125(2) comparison started in 2004. A good agreement between the TDCR results and the key comparison reference value of the 2004/2005 comparison was obtained.

Calculation of extrapolation curves in the 4π(LS)β-γ coincidence technique with the Monte Carlo code Geant4

At LNE-LNHB, a liquid scintillation (LS) detection setup designed for Triple to Double Coincidence Ratio (TDCR) measurements is also used in the β-channel of a 4π(LS)β-γ coincidence system. This LS counter based on 3 photomultipliers was first modeled using the Monte Carlo code Geant4 to enable the simulation of optical photons produced by scintillation and Cerenkov effects. This stochastic modeling was especially designed for the calculation of double and triple coincidences between photomultipliers in TDCR measurements. In the present paper, this TDCR-Geant4 model is extended to 4π(LS)β-γ coincidence counting to enable the simulation of the efficiency-extrapolation technique by the addition of a γ-channel. This simulation tool aims at the prediction of systematic biases in activity determination due to eventual non-linearity of efficiency-extrapolation curves. First results are described in the case of the standardization (59)Fe. The variation of the γ-efficiency in the β-channel due to the Cerenkov emission is investigated in the case of the activity measurements of (54)Mn. The problem of the non-linearity between β-efficiencies is featured in the case of the efficiency tracing technique for the activity measurements of (14)C using (60)Co as a tracer.

The importance of the beta spectrum calculation for accurate activity determination of ⁶³Ni by means of liquid scintillation counting

The activity concentration of a (63)Ni solution was determined by means of two liquid scintillation counting techniques: the TDCR method and the CIEMAT/NIST efficiency tracing technique. The results of both methods are in excellent agreement, provided that the (63)Ni beta spectrum calculation accounts for the atomic exchange effect. Thus, new beta spectrum calculations resolve a discrepancy that has been found in previous analyses. The influence of the computed beta spectrum on the final uncertainty of the activity concentration is discussed.

Set-up of a new TDCR counter at IRA-METAS

A triple-to-double coincidence ratio (TDCR) counter was recently constructed at IRA-METAS for liquid scintillation based primary activity standardisations. A description of its optical chamber, efficiency change tools, photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) and electronics is given. This TDCR system was validated by measuring several standard solutions of beta emitters including (45)Ca, (14)C, (63)Ni and (3)H. The activity concentrations, obtained from these measurements and efficiencies computed with a FORTRAN code we developed for symmetric and asymmetric PMTs, agree with the certified values within uncertainties.

First TDCR measurements at low energies using a miniature x-ray tube

Developed for radionuclide standardization using liquid scintillation, the Triple to Double Coincidence Ratio (TDCR) method is applied using coincidence counting obtained with a specific three-photomultiplier system. For activity determination, a statistical model of light emission is classically used to establish a relation between the detection efficiency and the experimental TDCR value. At LNE-LNHB, a stochastic approach of the TDCR modeling was developed using the Monte Carlo code Geant4. The interest of this TDCR-Geant4 model is the possibility to simulate the propagation of optical photons from their creation in the scintillation vial to the production of photoelectrons in photomultipliers. As an alternative to the use of radionuclide sources, first TDCR measurements are presented using a miniature x-ray tube closely coupled to the scintillation vial. The objective of this new set-up was to enable low-energy depositions (lower than 20 keV) in liquid scintillator in order to study the influence of both time and geometrical dependence between PMTs already observed with radioactive sources. As for the statistical TDCR model, the non-linearity of light emission is implemented in the TDCR-Geant4 model using the Birks formula which depends on the kB factor and the scintillation yield. Measurements performed with the x-ray tube are extended to the assessment of these parameters and they are tested afterwards in the TDCR-Geant4 model for activity measurements of (3)H.

Improved Čerenkov counting techniques based on a free parameter model

In the past few years, two Čerenkov methods were developed to make activity measurements of high-energy beta emitters in liquid scintillation counters with two or three photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) possible. Both methods are based on a free parameter model and make use of the Frank and Tamm theory for the emission of Čerenkov light. In this article, additional effects are discussed and further improvements are presented. The dependence of the refractive index of water on the wavelength can now be taken into account, which has also an influence on the upper limit of the wavelength region for the production of Čerenkov light. In addition, the dependence of the PMT response on the wavelength is taken into account. Finally, it is possible to take a potential asymmetry of efficiencies in a system with three PMTs into account. To this end, three free parameters are assigned to each individual PMT and then determined by means of a downhill simplex optimization algorithm. The computed counting efficiencies for a triple-to-double coincidence ratio (TDCR) system were compared with experimental data for (32)P, (89)Sr, and (90)Y.

Measurement of wavelength-dependent refractive indices of liquid scintillation cocktails

Refractive indices of several commercial liquid scintillation cocktails were measured by means of an automatic critical-angle dispersion refractometer in the wavelength range from 404.7 nm to 706.5 nm. The results are needed for various applications. In particular, detailed Monte Carlo simulations of liquid scintillation counters that include the computation of optical light require these data. In addition, the refractive index is an important parameter for studies of micelle sizes by means of dynamic light scattering. In this work, the refractive indices were determined for Ultima Gold™, Ultima Gold™ F, Ultima Gold™ LLT, Ultima Gold™ AB, Hionic Fluor™, Permafluor(®)E+, Mineral Oil Scintillator, Insta-Gel Plus, OptiPhase HiSafe 2, OptiPhase HiSafe 3, Ultima Gold™ XR, Insta-Gel Plus, AquaLight, MaxiLight and Ultima Gold™ MV at 16°C, 18°C, 20°C and 22°C. The carbon dioxide absorber Carbo-Sorb(®)E was also analyzed. For some scintillators, various batches were compared and mixtures with water or nitromethane were studied.
