Comparison of Radionuclide Impurities Activated during Irradiation of 18O-Enriched Water in Tantalum and Silver Targets during the Production of 18F in a Cyclotron

During the production of ¹⁸F, as a result of the interaction of the beam of protons and secondary neutrons with the structural elements of the target body, many radionuclide impurities are created in the cyclotron. As part of this work, we theoretically predicted which isotopes would be activated in the target tantalum or silver bodies. Subsequently, we used gamma spectrometry analysis to verify these predictions. The results were compared with the work of other authors who studied titanium and niobium as materials for making the target body. Tantalum has been evaluated as the most favorable in terms of generating radionuclide impurities during the production of ¹⁸F by irradiation of ¹⁸O-enriched water in accelerated proton cyclotrons. Only three radionuclides were identified in the tested samples: ¹⁸¹W, ¹⁸¹Hf, and ¹⁸²Ta with a half-life of fewer than 120 days. The remaining reactions led to the formation of stable isotopes.

Aliphatic 18 F-Radiofluorination: Recent Advances in the Labeling of Base-Sensitive Substrates*

Aliphatic fluorine-18 radiolabeling is the most commonly used method to synthesize tracers for PET-imaging. With an increasing demand for ¹⁸ F-radiotracers for clinical applications, new labeling strategies aiming to increase radiochemical yields of established tracers or, more importantly, to enable ¹⁸ F-labeling of new scaffolds have been developed. In recent years, increased attention has been focused on the direct aliphatic ¹⁸ F-fluorination of base-sensitive substrates in this respect. This minireview gives a concise overview of the recent advances within this field and aims to highlight the advantages and limitations of these methods.

Target development for diversified irradiations at a medical cyclotron

The irradiation facility at an old medical cyclotron (Ep=17 MeV; Ed=10 MeV) was upgraded by extending the beam line and incorporation of solid state targetry. Tests performed to check the quality of the available beam are outlined. Results on nuclear data measurements and improvement of radiochemical separations are described. Using solid targets, with the proton beam falling at a slanting angle of 20°, a few radionuclides, e.g. (75)Se, (120)I, (124)I, etc. were produced with medium currents (up to 20 µA) in no-carrier-added form in quantities sufficient for local use. The extended irradiation facility has considerably enhanced the utility of the medical cyclotron.
