Measurement of 238U, 228Ra, 226Ra, 40K and 137Cs in foodstuffs samples collected from coastal areas of China

Study of Polonium (210Po) Activity Concentration in Fruit Wines Derived from Different Locations in Poland

This study aimed at assessing the activity concentration and the annual effective dose of polonium-210 (210Po) in fruit wines derived from four locations in Poland (Warmian−Masurian, Podlaskie, Lubelskie and Małopolskie voivodeships). The fruit wines differed significantly (p < 0.05) in 210Po activity depending on the production site, with the Małopolskie site having the highest activity (61.4−221.4 mBq/L) and the Podlaskie having the lowest (3.5−97.1 mBq/L). The site differentiation was due to environmental conditions—soil parameters (uranium concentration), precipitations and terrain characteristics, e.g., the proximity of the lakes. The increased activity concentration of 210Po in samples from Małopolska compared with the other sites probably derived from the environment polluted with aqueous wastes and particulate air pollution. The annual effective dose due to the ingestion of fruit wines ranged from 0.112 to 1.214 µSv/year. These levels of exposure are safe according to the WHO criterion (0.1 mSv per year for ingestion) and to the IAEA reference level for public exposure including food (1 mSv per year). Summing up, the data obtained provide information on the activity concentration of 210Po in fruit wines and increase databases on the natural radioactivity of foodstuffs. Future work is needed to examine 210Po activity in samples from all vineyard regions in Poland.

Natural and anthropogenic radioactivity in some vegetables and fruits commonly consumed in the Western Black Sea region of Turkey

In this study, the activity concentration of 226Ra, 232Th, 40K, and 137Cs in some vegetable and fruit samples frequently consumed in Kastamonu province located in the West Black Sea region of Turkey were determined using a gamma-ray spectrometer. The activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K varied from 0.8 ± 0.1 to 32.8 ± 1.3, 0.7 ± 0.1 to 41.3 ± 21 and 391.8 ± 18.3 to 4679.0 ± 311.4 Bq kg−1 (dw), respectively, in twenty-eight vegetables and 1.3 ± 0.1 to 12.6 ± 0.4, 1.4 ± 0.1 to 15.0 ± 0.5 and 133.0 ± 84 to 777.0 ± 69.4 Bq kg−1 (dw), respectively, in seven fruit samples. The highest activity concentration of 226Ra and 232Th was measured in the garlic sample, while the highest activity concentration of 40K was measured in the spinach sample. Artificial radionuclide 137Cs was measured only in four vegetable samples; its activity concentration in garlic, eggplant, cucumber and carrot samples was determined as 9.6 ± 0.3, 3.1 ± 0.1, 3.1 ± 0.1 and 2.2 ± 0.1 Bq kg−1 (dw), respectively. The results obtained were compared with the results of similar studies in the literature. Annual effective radiation dose to adults due to the internal irradiation caused by ingestion of the investigated vegetable and fruit samples, and the corresponding excess lifetime cancer risk were estimated as 201 µSv and 8.9 × 10−5, respectively. The contribution of 40K to the total annual effective radiation dose was found as approximately 70%.

Study of the Tagus River and Entrepeñas reservoir ecosystem around the Trillo nuclear power plant using chemometric analysis: Influence on water, sediments, algae and fish

The fluvial and aquatic ecosystem of the Tagus River and Entrepeñas reservoir located in the surrounding of the Trillo nuclear power plant (NPP) was evaluated from 1992 to 2008, considering the physical-chemical characteristics, metal content and radiological activity of the water, sediments, algae and fish. The water of both basins demonstrated pH, conductivity, COD, NO₃^- and DO values within a range considered as good quality and the water quality index (WQI) was found to be within a range of 71-90. Chemometric analysis revealed a shift in the river water (from upstream to downstream) affected by the concentration of salts and metals of natural origin, such as Fe and Al, and slight variations in temperature and radiological activity were detected due to the discharges from the NPP. The hydric conditions contributed to increase or decrease the metal concentration of the river water, the reservoir sediments, algae and fish. Fe and Al were found in higher concentration during drought periods and accumulated in sediments, algae and fish along the river course (from SP1 to SP3). Natural and artificial radionuclides found were ⁴⁰K with an average of 245 Bq/kg in river sediments, 499 Bq/kg in reservoir sediments and 121 Bq/kg in fish, and ⁹⁰Sr with a concentration between 0.40 and 1.30 Bq/kg in sediments. Contamination of the aquatic ecosystem with metals and radionuclides was low according to European legislation. In conclusion, this study provides additional elements aimed at understanding the dynamics of fluvial and lentic ecosystems under the influence of different disturbances.

Establishment of a NORM baseline for selected seafood in the Gulf of Mexico

Naturally occurring radioactive material was characterized in selected seafood samples from three areas in the Gulf of Mexico. Relatively desirable and abundant fish such as Red Snapper, Red Drum, Northern Whiting, and Spotted Trout as well as oysters were collected and analyzed using gamma spectroscopy to determine the concentration of ²²⁸Ra, ²²⁶Ra, and ⁴⁰K. Average total activity concentration from these radionuclides were 0.9 ± 0.6, 1.6 ± 1.2, and 132 ± 57 Bq kg^-1 respectively, in the edible portion of wet weight samples. The results were consistent with previous studies for other bodies of water. A small but statistically significant increase in ²²⁶Ra was found in comparison to similar research performed 20 years prior. These measurements provide a reasonable baseline for the examined species from the Gulf of Mexico.

Estimation of annual effective dose due to ingestion of radioactive elements in Sri Lankan common meal plans

Dietary ingestion of radionuclides by human may lead to many hazardous effects such as cancers. No studies have been conducted to estimate the levels of radioactivity dosage received from Sri Lankan homemade foods. In order to find out the levels of radionuclides in Sri Lankan cooked foods, meal plans (n = 11) that are most commonly consumed were analyzed for the activity concentrations of the radioisotopes ²²⁶Ra, ²¹⁰Pb, ²³²Th, ¹³⁷Cs, and ⁴⁰K by means of gamma spectroscopy. ⁴⁰K had the highest activity concentration present in the meal plans with a range of 80.56 ± 17.53 to 143.41 ± 24.6 Bq kg^-1, and the radionuclides ²²⁶Ra, ²¹⁰Pb, ¹³⁷Cs, and ²³²Th were not detected in any of the analyzed meal plans. The annual intake of food was determined on the basis of their average annual consumption. The effective dose to an average adult who consumes the meal plans ranged from 0.030 to 0.051 mSv year^-1. However, the effective dose and activity concentrations of radionuclides were lower than the guideline limit specified by United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation^-1 and other countries. Hence, the consumption of cooked meal plans in Sri Lanka is safe in terms of radioactivity for the five radionuclides investigated in this study.
