Environmental impacts of heavy metals, rare earth elements and natural radionuclides in marine sediment from Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia along the Arabian Gulf

Assessment of the potential radiation hazards posed by Nubian sandstone, Egypt

The study found that the activity concentrations of the radionuclides 238U, 232Th and 40K in the sandstone are 32 ± 13, 29.6 ± 12.2, and 132.6 ± 86.4 Bq kg-1, respectively. These values are lower than the reported worldwide limits of 33, 45, and 412 Bq kg-1. According to the present study, the absorbed dose rate (Dair), the annual effective dose, and the excess life time cancer were all found to be below the worldwide mean. Pearson correlation, PCA, and HCA were used to analyze the data and identify patterns in the relationship between radionuclides and radiological hazards. A statistical analysis of the sandstones showed that the radioactive elements 238U, 232Th and 40K are the main contributors to the radioactive risk. The study suggests that the sandstone is safe to use. The levels of radioactivity are not high enough to pose a risk to human health.

Recent review of natural and artificial background radiation dosimetry studies in Saudi Arabia

This paper includes a review of the natural background radiation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The review deals with natural radioactivity measurements conducted in the past few decades in the Kingdom. The numerous research works reviewed refer to different materials soils processed building material, terrestrial (dwellings) and mining sites. For the measurements, different experimental techniques were adopted. The highest mean specific activity of ²³⁸U, ²³²Th and ⁴⁰ K in soil samples was found to be 39.0, 25.6, and 343.0 Bq/kg, respectively. While the world average values are 33, 45 and 420 Bq/kg, respectively. For building materials, the highest mean values for ²²⁶Ra, ²³²Th and ⁴⁰ K were 89, 106 and 773 Bq/kg, respectively. The mean indoor and outdoor dose rates were 455 µGy/y (Riyadh City) and 883 µGy/y (Al-Khamis City), respectively. For the mining sites the mean values for ²³⁸U, ²²⁶Ra, ²²⁸Ra, gross α and gross β, were 0.12, 0.33, 21, 0.78 and 2.44 Bq/kg, respectively. Based on the available data it is concluded that most of the natural background radiation levels in the measured locations were within acceptable limits, while a few isolated locations showed elevated dose rates. This review suggests that new improved radiological survey methods be employed to cover the entire country, and that areas identified with comparably high dose rates be re-assessed, especially, in dwellings and mining sites.

Radiological and environmental hazards of granitic rocks in Wadi Faliq El Sahl and El Waar area, North Eastern Desert, Egypt

Chronologically, the main exposures in the study area include; tonalite, granodiorite, adamellite, Hammamat Sediments, monzogranite, syenogranite, rapakivi syenogranite, alkali feldspar granite and dykes. This work aims to determine the suitability of the granitic rocks for using as ornamental stones through detecting their radiological and ecological impacts. The studied samples were measured radiometrically by using Na-I detector for determination of ²²⁶Ra, ²³²Th and ⁴⁰K concentrations. External hazard indices (H_ex) in some samples are more than unity, also, the (Raeq) are higher than the exemption limits (370 Bq.kg^-1) exceeds the upper limit of exposure. The hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) was applied to investigate the correlation between the radionuclides and the corresponding radiological hazard variables. Based on the statistical analysis, ²³²Th and ²²⁶Ra mainly contribute to the radioactive risk of the studied rocks. Regarding ecological indices, 42.1% of younger granite samples have Pollution load index values greater than 1, indicating deterioration, while the majority of older granite samples are lower than 1 suggesting perfection samples. Where, some sample from the older granitoids and younger granites have many radiological and ecological parameters greater than the recommended international limits, so, these samples should not be used in construction for safety reasons.

Sources, distribution and effects of rare earth elements in the marine environment: Current knowledge and research gaps

Rare earth elements and yttrium (REY) are critical elements for a wide range of applications and consumer products. Their growing extraction and use can potentially lead to REY and anthropogenic-REY chemical complexes (ACC-REY) being released in the marine environment, causing concern regarding their potential effects on organisms and ecosystems. Here, we critically review the scientific knowledge on REY sources (geogenic and anthropogenic), factors affecting REY distribution and transfer in the marine environment, as well as accumulation in- and effects on marine biota. Further, we aim to draw the attention to research gaps that warrant further scientific attention to assess the potential risk posed by anthropogenic REY release. Geochemical processes affecting REY mobilisation from natural sources and factors affecting their distribution and transfer across marine compartments are well established, featuring a high variability dependent on local conditions. There is, however, a research gap with respect to evaluating the environmental distribution and fate of REY from anthropogenic sources, particularly regarding ACC-REY, which can have a high persistence in seawater. In addition, data on organismal uptake, accumulation, organ distribution and effects are scarce and at best fragmentary. Particularly, the effects of ACC-REY at organismal and community levels are, so far, not sufficiently studied. To assess the potential risks caused by anthropogenic REY release there is an urgent need to i) harmonise data reporting to promote comparability across studies and environmental matrices, ii) conduct research on transport, fate and behaviour of ACC-REY vs geogenic REY iii) deepen the knowledge on bioavailability, accumulation and effects of ACC-REY and REY mixtures at organismal and community level, which is essential for risk assessment of anthropogenic REY in marine ecosystems.

Natural radionuclides and assessment of radiological hazards in MuongHum, Lao Cai, Vietnam

²²⁶Ra, ²³⁸U, ⁴ K, and ²³²Th (²²⁸Ra) activity concentrations of 61 soil samples distributed surrounding the rare earth element mine (NORM), MH, Lao Cai, Vietnam have been measured by HPGe detector. The activity concentrations of ²²⁶Ra, ²³⁸U, ⁴ K, and ²³²Th (²²⁸Ra) range from 1179 to 6291 Bq/kg, from 1024 to 8351 Bq/kg, from 260 to 3519 Bq/kg, and from 1476 to 35546 Bq/kg in the ore body and from 21.3 to 964 Bq/kg, from 23.4 to 1635 Bq/kg, from 124 to 3788 Bq/kg, and from 40.9 to 6107 Bq/kg outside the ore body in respective. The study area is considered as the high local natural background radiation with the concentration of ²²⁶Ra, ²³⁸U, ⁴ K, and ²³²Th (²²⁸Ra) of 156, 254, 647, and 908 Bq/kg in respective. Regarding the spatial distribution, the measured radionuclide concentrations are independent of the distance from measured points to the ore body. With regard to the hazard indices, the average calculated radiological hazard indices, including absorbed gamma dose rate, effective dose equivalent, and excess lifetime cancer risk significantly exceed the global average values. There is a disequilibrium between ²³⁸U/²²⁶Ra concentrations in studied soil samples. The results also found that the ²³²Th (²²⁸Ra) concentration and total absorbed gamma dose rate show a strong positive correlation (coefficient of determination, R² = 1).

Investigations on chemical composition and natural radioactivity levels from salt water and peloid used in pelotherapy from the Techirghiol Lake, Romania

The work presents the historical evolution, objectives, goals, concepts, chemical and radiometric methods, results and conclusions for salt waters and natural peloids used in pelotherapy. This study assesses chemical composition, natural radioactivity concentrations and the radiological hazard in peloid and salt water samples, from ten places in the Techirghiol Lake from Romania. Pelotherapy is a very important procedure, and thus, the materials used for this purpose must be well characterized to guaranty safety use. Concentrations of elements such as Sr, Ba, Mn, Fe, Sb, Zn, Cu, Pb, Ti, Ni, Cr, As have been measured using ICP-OES analytical technique. The natural radionuclides such as ²³⁸U, ²²⁶Ra, ²³²Th and ⁴⁰K have been determined by gamma-ray spectrometry. The average activity concentrations were of 0.48 ± 0.10 Bq/kg for ²³⁸U, 0.60 ± 0.10 Bq/kg for ²²⁶Ra, 0.30 ± 0.08 Bq/kg for ²³²Th and 17.5 ± 1.3 Bq/kg for ⁴⁰K for salt water samples. Also, the mean activity concentrations for peloids were: 5.70 ± 1.00 Bq/kg for ²³⁸U, 6.85 ± 1.60 Bq/kg for ²³²Th, 15.3 ± 3.7 Bq/kg for ²²⁶Ra and 95.8 ± 5.5 Bq/kg for ⁴⁰K. The results from this study contribute to the identification of possible contaminants in the salt water and peloid, and their association with the potential ecological and human health risk. In this context, of using salt water and peloid in a relatively long treatment period, several radiological indices have been calculated, to determine if the radionuclide's content can be also harmful to human health. The assessment indicates that humans are not exposed to concentrations of metal contaminants higher than the international recommended values.

Natural and anthropogenic radionuclides in urban soil around non-nuclear industries (Northern Al Jubail), Saudi Arabia: assessment of health risk

The residential areas are located around one of the oldest and largest non-nuclear industrial cities in Saudi Arabia, Arabian Gulf. Therefore, it is important to study the radioactivity levels in the urban soil in order to estimate the potential risk of radiation in environment and for public. The activity concentrations of ²²⁶Ra, ²³²Th, ⁴⁰K, and ¹³⁷Cs in urban soil around non-nuclear industries were measured using gamma ray spectrometric technique. The mean values of activity concentrations were found to be 7.64 ± 0.4, 3.76 ± 0.2, 174 ± 3.7, and 0.391 ± 0.03 (Bq/kg) for ²²⁶Ra, ²³²Th, ⁴⁰K, and ¹³⁷Cs, respectively. Radium equivalent activity (Ra_eq), gamma absorbed dose rate in air (D), and annual effective dose equivalent (E) for outdoor were calculated. The mean values of these radiological parameters were found to be less than the allowed limits in soil. The obtained results were compared with other studies from Arabian Gulf and other regions of the world. Consequently, the direct gamma radiation exposure from the urban soil in the study area was found to be safe for public. Additionally, the present study is the first in this area which could be used as a baseline for radioactivity levels in soil nearby industrial areas of the Arabian Gulf region.

Uranium and Trace Metals Contamination in Topsoil from Different Zones Around Industrial City, Al Jubail, Saudi Arabia

The concentrations of uranium and 9 trace metals were analyzed in 116 topsoil samples collected from 6 zones around the most important and oldest industrial city in Al Jubail, eastern Saudi Arabia. The concentrations of U, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sr, and Zn were measured using gamma ray spectrometry and plasma atomic emission spectrometer. The obtained data showed that the mean values of uranium in all zones were below or similar to the world average and the background value of soil. In contrast, the results revealed that the selected metals were higher than the background values in most zones, where the highest mean value of Pb was 2270 times higher than the background value in the eastern border of the industrial city (Zone 5), and the lowest mean value of Pb was 980 times higher than the background value in the western border of the industrial city (Zone 1). Moreover, the concentrations of uranium and metals were compared with local and global mean values. The geoaccumulation index (I_geo) and pollution load index (PLI) were calculated to assess the pollution levels of trace metals in topsoil. The I_geo values indicated uncontaminated to moderately contaminated for all metals except Pb, which was extremely contaminated in all zones. The PLI value was much higher than 1 for all zones. Accordingly, the topsoil around the industrial city is contaminated with metals.

Temporal metal concentration in coastal sediment at the north region of Persian Gulf

The purpose of this article is to study, result of metal concentration in two-sediment cores from Persian Gulf. Age of sediment is determined by C¹⁴ isotope method and bulk concentration is determined by ICP. This research output shows that, age of BandareAbbas core back to 9660 and Bushehr core to 15,600 years ago. Also,concentration in BandareAbbas and Bushehr cores respectively change as, As (1.08-11.76 Vs 5.2-13.09), Ba (15.03-129.5 Vs 73.9-120.4), Cd (0.09-0.46 Vs 0.09-0.18), Li (5.66-58.5 Vs 15.3-33.4), Mo (0.3-0.75 Vs 0.3-0.8), Mg (7928.4-15,503.9 Vs 13,102.8-17,227.8), Mn (110.6-566.4 Vs 279.3-429.1), Na (8905.47-27,993.3 Vs 9357.7-27,541.4), Ni (13.3-110.3 Vs 37.1-88.4), Pb (0.5-42.5 Vs 2.5-13.6), Sr (407.5-1773.2 Vs 440.3-1596.9), Zn (13.05-71.2Vs22.4-50.5), Fe (0.46-4.07 Vs 1.7-3.18), Ca (9.25-23.3 Vs 13.8-19.2) and Al (0.62-8.15 Vs 2.48-4.65). Moreover different pollution index investigation represent that except Ca, the rest of the metal elements do not show pollution.
