Comparison of light outputs, decay times, and imaging performance of a ZnS(Ag) scintillator for alpha particles, beta particles, and gamma photons

Development of an event-by-event based Li-ZnS(Ag) neutron imaging detector with selective neutron detection capability

High sensitivity and high resolution is desired in such technologies as neutron radiography. However, the contamination of gamma photons in neutron images decreases the accuracy of neutron radiography. To solve this problem, we developed an event-by-event based neutron imaging system that can selectively detect neutrons. The developed neutron imaging system consists of an Li-ZnS(Ag) scintillator plate optically coupled to a flat panel photomultiplier tube (FP-PMT) with a light guide. Scintillation light emitted from the Li-ZnS(Ag) by the interaction with neutron-induced particles is used to calculate the position based on the center of mass calculations. The spatial resolution of the neutron imaging detector is ∼2.3 mm FWHM, and the sensitivity for 252Cf at 2 cm from the source with 2-cm-thick polystyrene is 20 cps/MBq. Background count fraction from 60Co gamma photons was 0.2 %. For various types of neutron absorption phantoms, high-contrast and high-resolution neutron images are obtained with the developed neutron imaging detector using a252Cf neutron source.

Development of local-power-free, remote α-particle detection using optical fibers

We demonstrate the application of fluorescence optical fiber coupled to a telecom grade fiber as a sensor for alpha particles using alpha-specific ZnS(Ag) scintillation materials whose wavelength is down-shifted into a low-loss region of the telecom grade fiber transmission band. Telecom-grade fiber optics offer a solution for sensing alpha radiation in deep repositories and cask storage for radioactive materials due to the stability of SiO2 under normal environmental conditions and its relative radiation hardness at low radiation doses. Long-term nuclear waste storage facilities require sensors for the detection of leakage of radioactive materials that are maintenance-free, do not require power and can survive with no 'wear out' mechanisms for decades. By accomplishing the wavelength transformation, we maximize efficiencies in the detection of α-particles and signal transport and can detect alpha scintillation at distances on the order of >1 km with a sensor that is ~3% efficient and can be easily scaled as a sensor array. This paper describes the construction and testing of the sensor including manufacture of the controlled thickness films, verification of the wavelength shift from 450 to 620 nm and optimization of the sensitivity as a function of thickness. We also model the relative sensitivity of the film as a function of film thickness, and we demonstrate a signal-to-noise ratio of 10 at a range of greater than 1 km.

Optical imaging of lithium-containing zinc sulfate plate in water during irradiation of neutrons from boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) system

PURPOSE

Optical imaging of ionizing radiation is a possible method for dose distribution measurements. However, it is not clear whether the imaging method is also applicable to neutrons. To clarify this, we performed the imaging of neutrons in water from boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) systems. Such systems require efficient distribution measurements of neutrons for quality assessment (QA) of the beams.

METHOD

A water-filled phantom was irradiated from the side with an epithermal neutron beam, in which a lithium-containing zinc sulfate (Li-ZnS(Ag)) plate was set in the beam direction, and during this irradiation the scintillation of the plate was imaged using a cooled CCD camera. In the imaging, Li-6 in the Li-ZnS(Ag) plate captures neutrons and converts them to alpha particles (He-4) and tritium (H-3), while ZnS(Ag) in the Li-ZnS(Ag) plate produces scintillation light in the plate. We also conducted Monte Carlo simulation and compared its results with the experimental results.

RESULTS

The image of the emitted light from the Li-ZnS(Ag) plate was clearly obtained with an imaging time of 0.5 s. The depth and lateral profiles of the measured image using the Li-ZnS(Ag) plate showed the same shapes as the neutron distributions measured with gold foil, within a difference of 8%. The destructive effect of neutrons on the CCD camera increased ∼3 times, but the unit was still working after the measurement.

CONCLUSION

The optical imaging of neutrons in water is possible, and it has the potential to be a new method for efficient QA as well as for research on neutrons. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Local and high distance neutron and gamma measurements of fuel rods oscillation experiments

We report in the present article on the successful observation using noise analysis of the lateral oscillation of one fuel rod by ±2.5 mm around nominal at 0.1 Hz frequency, using an mm3 miniature neutron scintillator at the rod level, and a BGO gamma detector seven meters away from the reactor core center. The experiment was conducted as part of the COLIBRI program in the CROCUS reactor, which is dedicated to the investigation of reactor noise induced by fuel vibrations. It consists in experiments on rod lateral displacement (static) and oscillation (dynamic) with different rods’ numbers at various relevant amplitudes and frequencies. Its main motivation is the increased amplitudes in the neutron noise distributions recorded in ex- and in-core detectors that have been observed in recent years in Siemens pre-Konvoi type of PWR reactors. The obtained experimental data are used for the purpose of code validation, especially within the framework of the European project CORTEX on reactor noise applications. During the first phase of COLIBRI, the observation of a spatial dependence of the perturbation noise, also called neutron modulation, was demonstrated. In the second phase of COLIBRI starting 2021, it is planned to use a core mapping array of neutron detectors to record its propagation. It consists in about 150 miniature scintillators coupled to optical fibers and SiPM readouts, to be distributed in the reactor core. As a feasibility test, experiments were performed using a miniature scintillator prototype placed on a fuel rod, and oscillating the instrumented rod or the one directly adjacent to the detector. In addition, it is theoretically possible to measure branching or perturbation reactor noise using gamma radiation. Following recent developments on gamma measurements in CROCUS, the fuel oscillation was simultaneously recorded with a gamma detection array, LEAF. Its large BGO detectors were used by placing them at the maximum distance to the core, i.e. seven meters away with a clear line of sight using an experimental channel through the shielding of the reactor cavity.

Optical fiber-based ZnS(Ag) detector for selectively detecting alpha particles

In alpha radionuclide therapy, an optical fiber-based alpha particle detector is a new tool that could possibly be employed for the direct detection of alpha particles in subjects. Thus, in the present study, we developed an optical fiber-based alpha particle detector. The alpha particle detector was made of a 1mm diameter, 10 cm long plastic double clad optical fiber drilled a 0.7 mm diameter, 2 mm depth open space at the one end of the fiber. Silver-doped zinc sulfide (ZnS (Ag)) was painted inside this open space to form a ZnS(Ag) small scintillation chamber. To conduct performance comparisons, we also developed a fiber detector using the same fiber in which a Ce-doped Lu_1.8Y_0·2SiO₅ (LYSO(Ce)) scintillator with dimensions of 0.32 mm × 0.5 mm × 5 mm was inserted. Both fiber detectors were wrapped in aluminized Mylar and optically coupled to a position sensitive photomultiplier tube, before calculating the two-dimensional distributions, energy, and pulse shape spectra. For 5.5-MeV alpha particles, the ZnS(Ag) fiber detector produced ~ 5 times larger pulse heights and the count rate was ~2 times higher compared with those using the LYSO(Ce) fiber detector. For the maximum energy 2.28-MeV beta particles and 0.66-MeV gamma photons, the ZnS(Ag) fiber detector produced no counts, but it yielded small counts from natural alpha particles. Our results confirmed that the ZnS(Ag) fiber detector developed in this study could selectively detect alpha particles and it was insensitive to beta particles and gamma photons.
