Aggregation and breakage dynamics of alumina particles under shear by coupled Computational Fluid Dynamics - Discrete Element Method

HYPOTHESIS

Shear affects simultaneous aggregation and fragmentation of fine particles. Understanding the effect of shear on the dynamics of particle aggregation and break-up is important to predict aggregate size and structure. It is hypothesized that there is a transition from pure breakage of large aggregates to regimes where restructuring and aggregation also play a role as aggregates become smaller.

SIMULATIONS

Here, aggregation and fragmentation dynamics of alumina particles are investigated under laminar shear flow using Discrete Element Method (DEM) coupled with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The effect of the shear rate on the aggregation and breakage rates is quantified accounting for particle-particle and particle-fluid interactions.

FINDINGS

High shear rates promote the formation of small, compact aggregates. The collision efficiency decreases with increasing shear rate following a power law for shear rates higher than 1250 s-1. The transition from the pure breakage limit to the region dominated by breakage and restructuring has been observed for the first time. The breakage rate decreases significantly as the transition occurs upon decreasing aggregate size. CFD-DEM-derived collision efficiency and breakage rate equations are proposed that can be readily employed in detailed population balance equation models for industrial particle process design.

Experimental and Numerical Studies of Fine Quartz Single-Particle Sedimentation Based on Particle Morphology

The sedimentation characteristics of quartz particles affect their separation and settling dehydration processes. Particle morphology determines the sedimentation equilibrium velocity. In this paper, the sedimentation of a single quartz particle is characterized by employing experimental and CFD-DEM approaches. SEM served to examine quartz particles measuring 30–500 μm, and they exhibited flaky–blocky morphologies with an average long–middle axis ratio of 1.6. Consistent with the SEM-detected morphological features of the quartz particles, suggested here is a simpler drag coefficient model, followed by verification of the model with experimental data. The results show that the velocity of a quartz particle in the non-settling direction had a fluctuation of ±0.2 mm/s. The fluctuation reached 0.4 mm/s at varying settlement release angles. The order in which the particles reached sedimentation equilibrium velocity during the settlement process was double-cone, single-cone, and square when the initial velocity was greater than sedimentation equilibrium velocity. Furthermore, the long–middle axis ratio of quartz particles diminished as their equilibrium sedimentation velocities rose. Given that the quartz particles ranged from 30 to 50 μm in size, the long–middle axis ratio wielded no discernible effect on the sedimentation equilibrium velocity.

A review of flocculants as an efficient method for increasing the efficiency of municipal sludge dewatering: Mechanisms, performances, influencing factors and perspectives

Mechanical sludge dewatering is one of the stages of the municipal wastewater treatment process, which allows the amount of generated sludge and the cost of its transport and management to be reduced. Achieving a high degree of dewatering is possible thanks to the use of flocculation technology. The article presents issues related to the theory of flocculation, sewage sludge, and its dewatering. The main mechanisms of flocculation, the kinetics of the process, the division of flocculants, and flocculation in dual systems are discussed. The influence of particular parameters on the efficiency of flocculation and the dewatering of sewage sludge was analyed. The assessed parameters are: pH, the presence of salt, the mixing process, the structure and ionicity of chains, and the dose. The results of experimental studies on the dewatering of various types of sludge were compared. The literature review included in the paper helps to better understand the process of flocculation and sludge dewatering, and presents the progress to date and the possible directions for further development in this field.

Flotation using sodium dodecyl sulphate and sodium lauroyl isethionate for rapid dewatering of Mg(OH)2 radwaste suspensions

Mg(OH)₂ suspensions were floated utilising sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and sodium lauroyl isethionate (SLI) collectors, for rapid dewatering of radwaste suspensions. Freundlich adsorption isotherms were first used to compare the adsorption densities of SDS and SLI on Mg(OH)₂ surfaces, to determine the maximum monolayer coverage capacity, and were found to be 0.11 μmol m⁻² at a dosed concentration of 172 μM for SDS and 0.05 μmol m⁻² at a dosed concentration of 188 μM for SLI. The natural and salt induced coagulation kinetics of Mg(OH)₂ were examined using static light scattering, where the influence of collector adsorption on particle size distributions was also investigated, to probe potential hydrodynamic limitations of flotation. Particle stabilised foam formation was then characterised using a Bikerman column test, where the dynamic foamability indices (DFIs) of SDS and SLI were determined to be 49 × 10³ s L mol⁻¹ and 321 × 10³ s L mol⁻¹ respectively. Flotation performance was measured, and a collection efficiency factor used to compare the solid–liquid separation ability of mixed 2.5 vol% suspensions with SDS or SLI, as well as MIBC frother. Optimal performance aligned with collector concentrations relating to predicted maximum monolayer coverage, and whilst both surfactants were effective, SDS systems performed better than SLI in all metrics. Recoveries of >80% of the Mg(OH)₂ wastes were achieved, whilst only transferring 35% of the water mass at the optimum SDS dosed concentration of 82 μM, likely due to its denser surface adsorption and minimised lamella water entrainment.
