Surfactant assisted synthesis of precipitated calcium carbonate nanoparticles using dolomite: Effect of pH on morphology and particle size

Production of CaCO3-single-coated probiotics and evaluation of their spectroscopic properties, morphological characteristics, viability, and intestinal delivery efficiency

The intake of probiotics offers various health benefits; however, their efficacy depends on the maintenance of viability during industrial processing and digestion. Probiotic viability can be compromised during encapsulation, freeze-drying, storage, and digestion, necessitating multiple coatings. This complicates production and raises costs. In this study, CaCO3-single-coated probiotics (CSCPs) were prepared, an approach rarely reported before. Through instrumental analyses, the encapsulation of probiotics within CaCO3 was confirmed, ensuring their high viability. This proposed technology effectively preserves the viability of probiotics during the encapsulation and freeze-drying processes, resulting in minimal cell loss. Moreover, CSCPs demonstrated exceptional viability performance under simulated gastric and intestinal conditions. Notably, 100% of these microorganisms reached the intestines, delivering over 10 billion CFUs of probiotics in a viable state. This study highlights the potential of CSCPs as a feasible solution for overcoming probiotic encapsulation challenges and optimizing therapeutic benefits.

Coprecipitation and hydrothermal synthesis of CaO from dolomite in the presence of Sapindus rarak extract for biodiesel production: catalysts characterization and optimization

High-purity CaO cubic crystallites extracted from limestone exhibited excellent activity as base catalysts for waste cooking oil (WCO) conversion into biodiesel. Saponin from Sapindus rarak extract acted as a surfactant in CaO extraction and transformation into well-defined cubic microcrystallites. The application of saponin from Sapindus rarak extract as a surfactant for CaO production results in a high level of CaO purity and particle size reduction compared to directly calcined limestone (CaO-MgO). The catalytic activity was evaluated on CaO from hydrothermal and co-precipitation synthesis, MgO and CaO-MgO derived from limestone, giving hydrothermal CaO catalysts enhanced biodiesel yield. Optimization of transesterification conditions using Box Behnken Design response surface methodology achieved 92.40% biodiesel yield at 65 °C, 3 h reaction time and when using 5% of CaO catalysts.

Nanosized vaterite production through organic-solvent-free indirect carbonation

Nanosized vaterite, which exhibits characteristics such as high specific surface area, porosity, and biocompatibility, has attracted research attention for use as a drug delivery material. However, fatal drawbacks such as high costs, difficulty in mass production, and toxicity exist in conventional nanosized vaterite production owing to the use of a large amount of organic solvents to forcibly suppress the vaterite recrystallization and particle growth. Therefore, nanosized 100 % vaterite was produced in this study via indirect carbonation without using any organic solvent, which has rarely been achieved previously. Seawater, sucrose, ultrasonication, and aging-which facilitate vaterite production and particle size reduction-exhibited a synergistic effect in producing vaterite. To realize nanosized vaterite production via indirect carbonation, seawater was used as a solvent, sucrose was added when Ca was eluted, and CO₂ bubbling was performed under ultrasonication. Furthermore, the CaCO₃-containing suspension obtained after the carbonation was aged. Ultrasonic waves were required to generate nanosized vaterite and reducing size at the carbonation stage. This nanosized-vaterite-production strategy involving organic-solvent-free indirect carbonation is meaningful, in that it highlights the potential of synthesizing vaterite in an economically sound, environmentally friendly manner for use as a pharmaceutical raw material.

Mechanistic Study of Pb2+ Removal from Aqueous Solutions Using Eggshells

This study investigates the impact of eggshell particle size and solid-to-water (s/w) ratio on lead (Pb2+) removal from aqueous solution. Collected raw eggshells were washed, crushed, and sieved into two particle sizes (<150 and 150–500 µm). Batch Pb2+ removal experiments were conducted at different s/w ratios with initial Pb2+ concentrations of up to 70 mg/L. The contribution of precipitation to Pb2+ removal was simulated by quantifying removal using eggshell water, whereas sorbed Pb2+ was quantified by acid digestion. Results indicated that eggshell particle sizes did not affect Pb2+ removal. High removal (up to 99%) of Pb2+ was achieved for low initial Pb2+ concentrations (<30 mg/L) across all s/w ratios studied. However, higher removal capacity was observed at lower s/w ratios. In addition, results confirmed that precipitation played a major role in the removal of Pb2+ by eggshells. Yet, this role decreased as the s/w ratio and initial concentration of Pb2+ increased. A predictive relationship that relates the normalized removal capacity of eggshells to the s/w ratio was developed to potentially facilitate the design of the reactor.
