Experimental investigations on the effects of asparagine and serine on the polymorphism of calcium carbonate

Next-Generation Colloidal Materials for Ultrasound Imaging Applications

Ultrasound has important applications, predominantly in the field of diagnostic imaging. Presently, colloidal systems such as microbubbles, phase-change emulsion droplets and particle systems with acoustic properties and multiresponsiveness are being developed to address typical issues faced when using commercial ultrasound contrast agents, and to extend the utility of such systems to targeted drug delivery and multimodal imaging. Current technologies and increasing research data on the chemistry, physics and materials science of new colloidal systems are also leading to the development of more complex, novel and application-specific colloidal assemblies with ultrasound contrast enhancement and other properties, which could be beneficial for multiple biomedical applications, especially imaging-guided treatments. In this article, we review recent developments in new colloids with applications that use ultrasound contrast enhancement. This work also highlights the emergence of colloidal materials fabricated from or modified with biologically derived and bio-inspired materials, particularly in the form of biopolymers and biomembranes. Challenges, limitations, potential developments and future directions of these next-generation colloidal systems are also presented and discussed.

Bio-cement-modified construction materials and their performances

The microbial induced mineral precipitation can be used to modify and improve the performance of construction materials and can partially replace ordinary Portland cement. Microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) mainly uses the urease secreted during the growth of urease-producing bacteria (UPB) to hydrolyze urea produce CO₃^2- and reacts with Ca²⁺ to form CaCO₃. Microbially induced struvite precipitation (MISP) mainly uses the urease to decompose urea to produce NH₄⁺. In the presence of hydrogen phosphate and magnesium ions, the struvite can be precipitated. The elemental composition and chemical composition of the precipitates produced by the MICP and MISP processes are analyzed by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and powder X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). The morphology of the precipitates can be observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Compared with the initial porosity, the MICP method can reduce the initial porosity of the sand column by 2.98% within 90 min. However, the MISP is only 1.45%. The permeability coefficient of the sand column can be effectively reduced in the MICP process. The total content of cementitious materials is 27.71g and 13.16g in MICP- and MISP-cemented sand columns, respectively. The MICP technology can improve the strength of alkali-activated mortars under different pH values of the UPB solution.

Biochemical composite material using corncob powder as a carrier material for ureolytic bacteria in soil cadmium immobilization

Corncob powder possessing its superiority in environmental sustainability and cost, was approved with strong capability of being a replacement of biochar in facilitating the microbial carbonate precipitation process. In this study, the ureolytic bacterial strain Bacillus sp. WA isolated from a pre-acquired metal contaminated soil in Guiyu, China, was showed to be well attached on the surfaces of corncob powder, indicating the carrier's role as a durable shelter for bacterial cells. The efficient immobilization helped develop biochemical composite material (BCM) and proven to function better the calcite precipitation. Afterwards, the mechanism and multi-directional benefits of BCM in edaphic cadmium remediation were examined through pot experiment and compared with corncob powder/bacterial strain/nutrient media as control groups. Integrated lab-scale analyses emphasized the advantages of BCM by the maximum soil urease activity (up to 3.440 U/mg and increased by 214% in 28 days), maximal bacterial propagation (most abundant population in fluorescence microscopy), richest surface functional group (most remarkable OC bond and CO bond in FTIR result), notable calcite precipitation (clear calcite crystals on the surface of BCM compared to control group under SEM-EDS), and highest Cd immobilization rate (exchangeable Cd decreased by 68.54%), among all treatments. The pH and electroconductivity measurements additionally led to the mechanism of corncob powder and NBU promoting pre-existed ureolytic bacteria in soil, which demonstrated the added value of corncob to be fine carbon source and residence shelter for soil microorganism, revealing its potential in developing agricultural materials.
