High-gravity intensified preparation of D201 resin-hydrated iron oxide nanocomposites for Cr(VI) removal

Enhanced photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) from aqueous solution using Fe0/TiO2-based polymeric nanocomposites

The combination of zerovalent iron (Fe0) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been investigated as a promising method for environmental remediation. However, it is a challenge to prepare conveniently desirable Fe0/TiO2 nanocomposites with excellent efficiency and reusability. Here, a novel nanocomposite material, Fe0/TiO2@D201, was synthesized to enhance the removal of Cr(VI) from an aqueous system by impregnating Fe0 and TiO2 inside a commercial anion exchanger (D201). The proposed structure and Cr(VI) removal mechanism of Fe0/TiO2@D201 were confirmed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. Compared to the monometallic samples (Fe0-D201 and TiO2-D201), Fe0/TiO2@D201 showed outstanding Cr(VI) removal and the removal ratio reached up to 97.30% after 120 min of UV light irradiation. The removal of Cr(VI) by Fe0/TiO2@D201 remained high (91.70%) even after four cycles, indicating the stability of the nanocomposites toward Cr(VI) removal and their strong potential for practical applications. The addition of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) positively affected the Cr(VI) reduction process, whereas the addition of Na2S2O8 negatively affected the Cr(VI) process. The XPS results revealed that the photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) by Fe0/TiO2@D201 involved the capture of photoexcited electrons and Fe0 reduction. A path for the photogenerated electrons engaging in the reduction reaction to improve the utilization of Fe0 was proposed. These results demonstrate that Fe0/TiO2@D201 is a promising alternative composite catalyst for the efficient Cr(VI) removal from contaminated water.

Enhanced phosphate removal from water by hydrated neodymium oxide-based nanocomposite: Performance, mechanism, and validation

Phosphorus (P) control has been recognized as an imperative task to mitigate water eutrophication and settle the imminent shortage of P resources. Despite intensive effort put into this matter, it is still generally challenging for the current methods to remove and even potentially recover phosphorus (as phosphate) from complicated water matrices. To this end, we proposed a novel nanocomposite via coupling polystyrene anion exchanger (PsAX) with hydrated neodymium oxide (HNdO) nanoparticle for selective removal of phosphate. The developed nanocomposite, i.e., HNdO-PsAX, exhibited quite stable and efficient phosphate adsorption over a wide pH range of 3.0-10.0 with the maximum adsorption capacity as 85.4 mg P/g. It also showed satisfied anti-interference against various competing substances; notably, HNdO-PsAX obviously outperformed Phoslock, a commercial lanthanum-based adsorbent exclusively for phosphate sequestration, particularly under the interference of bicarbonate and humic acid, which were admitted as the paralyzing factors for Phoslock. The superior affinity of HNdO-PsAX towards phosphate, driven by the specific Nd-P inner-sphere complexation as evidenced by XPS, FT-IR, and the lattice evolution of HNdO nanoparticle, renders the nanocomposite eminently suitable for sequestrating trace phosphate. Fixed-bed treatment validated that HNdO-PsAX was capable of treating ∼11,800 bed volume of a simulated wastewater (from 2.0 to below 0.5 mg P/L), approximately 12 times higher than that of the previously reported Fe-based nanocomposite (HFO-PsAX, ∼ 900 BV); also, a satisfactory outcome in treating authentic municipal wastewater by HNdO-PsAX and the feasibility of regenerating the exhausted one by a binary NaOH-NaCl solution were recognized. This work provides a new potion of enhanced phosphorous control for surface water and wastewater.

Removal of Chromium Species by Adsorption: Fundamental Principles, Newly Developed Adsorbents and Future Perspectives

Emerging chromium (Cr) species have attracted increasing concern. A majority of Cr species, especially hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), could lead to lethal effects on human beings, animals, and aquatic lives even at low concentrations. One of the conventional water-treatment methodologies, adsorption, could remove these toxic Cr species efficiently. Additionally, adsorption possesses many advantages, such as being cost-saving, easy to implement, highly efficient and facile to design. Previous research has shown that the application of different adsorbents, such as carbon nanotubes (carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene oxide (GO) and its derivatives), activated carbons (ACs), biochars (BCs), metal-based composites, polymers and others, is being used for Cr species removal from contaminated water and wastewater. The research progress and application of adsorption for Cr removal in recent years are reviewed, the mechanisms of adsorption are also discussed and the development trend of Cr treatment by adsorption is proposed.

Fe/C materials prepared by one-step calcination of acidified municipal sludge and their excellent adsorption of Cr(VI)

Biochar derived from municipal sludge can be applied to adsorption. But it usually requires activation and pickling due to the generation of impurities such as metal oxide particles, which is uneconomical. Here, a facile strategy, acidification-one-step calcination, was developed and sludge-based Fe-C materials with good Cr(VI) removal effect were obtained by regulating the amount of hydrochloric acid. The results show that the adsorption capacity of Fe/C-5 (the best sample) for Cr(VI) was 150.84 mg g^-1. According to the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model, the removal of Cr(VI) by Fe/C-5 is spontaneous and endothermic chemisorption process. In addition, Fe/C-5 has good ability to remove Cr(VI) under the interference of coexisting ions, and has good cycle stability. The removal of Cr(VI) by Fe/C-5 is considered to be synergistic process of adsorption and reduction. The Fe atoms were highly dispersed in Fe/C-5 and tightly bonded with C atoms, which not only strengthened the Cr(VI) adsorption by electrostatic attraction, but also activated the C atoms in the biochar material, so that the C atoms can reduce Cr(VI) to Cr(III) under acidic conditions. This may be due to the fact that acid pretreatment converted the iron in municipal sludge in the form of Fe-O/OH to free Fe³⁺ and entered the C lattice during the calcination process. In this work, Fe-C materials with excellent Cr(VI) adsorption capacity were prepared by one-step calcination method, which has important reference significance for the resource utilization of municipal sludge.
