Experimental study on influence of adsorption equilibrium time on methane adsorption isotherm and Langmuir parameter

Cobalt metal replaces Co-ZIF-8 mesoporous material for effective adsorption of arsenic from wastewater

The high cost and low adsorption capacity of primary metal-organic frameworks (ZIF-8) limit their application in heavy metal removal. In this paper, Co/Zn bimetallic MOF materials were synthesized with excellent adsorption performance for As5+. The adsorption reached equilibrium after 180 min and the maximum adsorption was 250.088 mg/g. In addition, Co-ZIF-8 showed strong selective adsorption of As5+. The adsorption process model of Co-ZIF-8 fits well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2=0.997) and Langmuir isotherm model (R2=0.994), and it is demonstrated that the adsorption behavior of the adsorbent is a single layer of chemical adsorption. In addition, when the adsorbent enters the arsenic-containing solution, the surface of Co-ZIF-8 is hydrolyzed to produce a large number of Co-OH active sites, and As5+ arrives at the surface of Co-ZIF-8 by electrostatic adsorption and combines with the active sites to generate the arsenic-containing complex As-O-Co. After four cycles, Co-ZIF-8 showed 80% adsorption of As5+. This study not only provides a new method to capture As5+ in water by preparing MOF with partial replacement of the central metal, but also has great significance for the harmless disposal of polluted water.

Bisphenol A adsorption using modified aloe vera leaf-wastes derived bio-sorbents from aqueous solution: kinetic, isotherm, and thermodynamic studies

Reactive-oxygen-species are produced more often in the body when bisphenol A (BPA), an endocrine-disrupting-substance, is present. In this investigation, bio-sorbents from an aqueous solution adapted from Aloe-vera were used to survey BPA removal. Aloe-vera leaf wastes were used to create activated carbon, which was then analyzed using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Zeta potential, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) techniques. It was revealed that the adsorption process adheres to the Freundlich isotherm model with R2>0.96 and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model with R2>0.99 under ideal conditions (pH = 3, contact time = 45 min, concentration of BPA = 20 mg.L-1, and concentration of the adsorbent = 2 g.L-1). After five-cycle, the efficacy of removal was greater than 70%. The removal of phenolic-chemicals from industrial-effluent can be accomplished with the assistance of this adsorbent in a cost-effective and effective-approach.

Immobilization of bacterial mixture of Klebsiella variicola FH-1 and Arthrobacter sp. NJ-1 enhances the bioremediation of atrazine-polluted soil environments

In this study, the effects of the immobilized bacterial mixture (IM-FN) of Arthrobacter sp. NJ-1 and Klebsiella variicola strain FH-1 using sodium alginate-CaCl₂ on the degradation of atrazine were investigated. The results showed that the optimal ratio of three types of carrier materials (i.e., rice straw powder, rice husk, and wheat bran) was 1:1:1 with the highest adsorption capacity for atrazine (i.e., 3774.47 mg/kg) obtained at 30°C. On day 9, the degradation efficiency of atrazine (50 mg/L) reached 98.23% with cell concentration of 1.6 × 10⁸  cfu/ml at pH 9 and 30°C. The Box-Behnken method was used to further optimize the culture conditions for the degradation of atrazine by the immobilized bacterial mixture. The IM-FN could be reused for 2-3 times with the degradation efficiency of atrazine maintained at 73.0% after being stored for 80 days at 25°C. The population dynamics of IM-FN was explored with the total soil DNA samples specifically analyzed by real-time PCR. In 7 days, the copy numbers of both PydC and estD genes in the IM-FN were significantly higher than those of bacterial suspensions in the soil. Compared with bacterial suspensions, the IM-FN significantly accelerated the degradation of atrazine (20 mg/kg) in soil with the half-life shortened from 19.80 to 7.96 days. The plant heights of two atrazine-sensitive crops (wheat and soybean) were increased by 14.99 and 64.74%, respectively, in the soil restored by immobilized bacterial mixture, indicating that the IM-FN significantly reduced the phytotoxicity of atrazine on the plants. Our study evidently demonstrated that the IM-FN could significantly increase the degradation of atrazine, providing a potentially effective bioremediation technique for the treatment of atrazine-polluted soil environment and providing experimental support for the wide application of immobilized microorganism technology in agriculture.

Research on the Development of Hydraulic Flushing Caverning Technology and Equipment for Gas Extraction in Soft and Low Permeability Tectonic Coal Seams in China

Soft and low permeability tectonic coal seams (SLPTCSs) are widely distributed in China. In SLPTCSs, because of the difficulty of gas extraction, coal and gas outburst accidents occur frequently. In this paper, with the principle of stress unloading and permeability enhancement in SLPTCSs analyzed, it is put forward that the key technology to realize stress unloading and permeability enhancement in SLPTCSs is caverning by hydraulic flushing. In addition, the development of hydraulic flushing caverning technology and equipment in China is also further systematically studied. Field tests on the application of highly integrated equipment for caverning by hydraulic flushing have been carried out in the Shijiazhuang coal mine and Pingdingshan no. 8 coal mine. The results show that the widely used drilling and hydraulic flushing packaged equipment and drilling and mechanical cutting packaged equipment for caverning in coal seams can efficiently enlarge caverns in SLPTCSs, reduce the amount of workload for hole-drilling in the coal seam, improve the permeability of the coal seam by 23.9 times, and increase the concentration and pure volume of gas extracted in boreholes by more than two times. Highly integrated hydraulic flushing caverning equipment can realize high-efficiency stress unloading and permeability enhancement of the coal seam, which provides beneficial guidance for gas control of SLPTCSs.
