Participation and Performance Trends in the ITU Duathlon World Championship From 2003 to 2017

J Strength Cond Res 35(4): 1127-1133, 2021-Participation and performance across years have been studied extensively in various endurance and ultra-endurance sports; however, less information exists with regards to duathlon (i.e., Run 1, Bike, and Run 2). The aim of this study was to examine performance and participation trends of duathletes competing either to short (10-km Run 1, 50-km Bike, and 5-km Run 2) or to long distance (10-km Run 1, 150-km Bike, and 30-km Run 2) in the Powerman World Championship "Powerman Zofingen." We analyzed 7,951 finishers (women, n = 1,236, age 36.7 ± 9.1 years; men, n = 6,715, 40.1 ± 10.1 years) competing in "Powerman Zofingen" from 2003 to 2017. Men were faster than women by 8.2% (171 ± 21 minutes vs. 186 ± 21 minutes, p < 0.001, η2 = 0.068) and 7.5% (502 ± 57 minutes vs. 543 ± 64 minutes, p < 0.001, η2 = 0.068) in the short and long distances, respectively. Women were younger than men by 4.6 years (35.0 ± 9.0 years vs. 39.6 ± 10.5 years, p < 0.001, η2 = 0.026) and 1.8 years (38.8 ± 8.7 years vs. 40.6 ± 9.5 years, p < 0.001, η2 = 0.005) in the short and long distances, respectively. An increase of women finishers across years in the long distance was observed (e.g., n = 19 in 2003 and n = 58 in 2017; p < 0.001), whereas no change was shown in short distance and men finishers. The men-to-women ratio (MWR) decreased across years in the long, but not in the short distance. No change of race time across years was observed. The sex difference in race time increased in long distance (p = 0.014), whereas it did not change in the short. Age increased across years in both sexes and distances (p < 0.001). The sex difference in age decreased in the long (p = 0.007), but not in the short distance. In summary, the number of women finishers increased and the MWR decreased in the long distance. The age of the finishers increased across years, and their performance remained unchanged. The increase of the sex difference in race time in the long distance might be attributed to the increased number of women finishers.

Cooper Test Provides Better Half-Marathon Performance Prediction in Recreational Runners Than Laboratory Tests

This study compared the ability to predict performance in half-marathon races through physiological variables obtained in a laboratory test and performance variables obtained in the Cooper field test. Twenty-three participants (age: 41.6 ± 7.6 years, weight: 70.4 ± 8.1 kg, and height: 172.5 ± 6.3 cm) underwent body composition assessment and performed a maximum incremental graded exercise laboratory test to evaluate maximum aerobic power and associated cardiorespiratory and metabolic variables. Cooper's original protocol was performed on an athletic track and the variables recorded were covered distance, rating of perceived exertion, and maximum heart rate. The week following the Cooper test, all participants completed a half-marathon race at the maximum possible speed. The associations between the laboratory and field tests and the final time of the test were used to select the predictive variables included in a stepwise multiple regression analysis, which used the race time in the half marathon as the dependent variable and the laboratory variables or field tests as independent variables. Subsequently, a concordance analysis was carried out between the estimated and actual times through the Bland-Altman procedure. Significant correlations were found between the time in the half marathon and the distance in the Cooper test (r = -0.93; p < 0.001), body weight (r = 0.40; p < 0.04), velocity at ventilatory threshold 1, (r = -0.72; p < 0.0001), speed reached at maximum oxygen consumption (vVO₂max), (r = -0.84; p < 0.0001), oxygen consumption at ventilatory threshold 2 (VO₂VT2) (r = -0.79; p < 0.0001), and VO₂max (r = -0.64; p < 0.05). The distance covered in the Cooper test was the best predictor of time in the half-marathon, and might predicted by the equation: Race time (min) = 201.26 - 0.03433 (Cooper test in m) (R ² = 0.873, SEE: 3.78 min). In the laboratory model, vVO2max, and body weight presented an R ² = 0.77, SEE 5.28 min. predicted by equation: Race time (min) = 156.7177 - 4.7194 (vVO₂max) - 0.3435 (Weight). Concordance analysis showed no differences between the times predicted in the models the and actual times. The data indicated a high predictive power of half marathon race time both from the distance in the Cooper test and vVO2max in the laboratory. However, the variable associated with the Cooper test had better predictive ability than the treadmill test variables. Finally, it is important to note that these data may only be extrapolated to recreational male runners.

The Effect of Aging on Pacing Strategies in Short and Long Distance Duathlon

Background/Study context: Many studies have been conducted on the triathlon during the last several years; however, less information exists with regards to duathlon (i.e., Run 1, Bike and Run 2). The aim of the present study was to examine the effect of age on pacing (i.e., the relative contribution - % - of each discipline and transition times - Transition 1 and Transition 2 - to overall race time) of duathletes competing either to short (i.e., 10 km Run 1, 50 km Bike and 5 km Run 2) or long distance (i.e., 10 km Run 1, 150 km Bike and 30 km Run 2).

METHODS

We analyzed 6,671 finishes (women's, n= 1,037, age 36.6 ± 9.1 years; men's, n= 5,634, 40.0 ± 10.0 years) of 3,881 duathletes competing in 'Powerman Zofingen', the World Championship, from 2003 to 2017, in both the short and the long distance race.

RESULTS

A large discipline×distance interaction on relative time (%) was observed in the short distance (p < .001, η²_p = .936); 24.7%, 57.4%, and 15.8% were spent in Run 1, Bike, and Run 2, respectively. In the long distance, the relative contribution of disciplines was 8.0%, 59.0%, and 32.1%, respectively. A trivial discipline×sex interaction on relative time (%) was shown in the short (p < .001, η²_p = .007) and long distance (p < .001, η²_p = .016). In the short distance, a small discipline×age group interaction on relative time (%) was found (p < .001, η²_p = .030) with younger age groups spending less time (%) in Run 1, Transition 1 and Transition 2, and older groups less time (%) in Bike and Run 2. In the long distance, a moderate discipline×age group interaction on relative time (%) was observed (p < .001, η²_p = .077) with younger age groups spending less time (%) in Run 1, Transition 1, Transition 2 and Run 2, and older groups less time (%) in Bike.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings suggest that younger duathletes are relatively faster in Run 1 and transitions, and older duathletes in Bike in both distances. However, older duathletes are relatively faster in Run 2 in the short distance and younger duathletes are relatively faster in Run 2 in the long distance. The magnitude of the combined effect of discipline and age group on pacing was larger in the long than in the short distance. Therefore, athletes and coaches should be aware of the variation of pacing by age group and distance of a duathlon race such as 'Powerman Zofingen'.

The Effect of Sex and Performance Level on Pacing in Duathlon

The purpose of the present research was to study the effect of sex and performance on pacing in short (Run1-10 km, Bike-50 km and Run2-5 km) and long distance (Run1-10 km, Bike-150 km and Run2-30 km) in the Powerman World Championship ‘Powerman Zofingen’. All finishers (n = 6671; women, n = 1037; men, n = 5634) competing either in the short or long distance versions of ‘Powerman Zofingen’ from 2003 to 2017 were analyzed for the time spent in each discipline (Run1, Bike and Run2), and in transition (Tran) from Run1 to Bike (Tran1) and from Bike to Run2 (Tran2). Athletes were ranked in quartile (Q) groups (Q1, Q2, Q3 and Q4), with Q1 the fastest and Q4 the slowest. In short distance, in both sexes, a medium discipline/transition × quartile interaction on relative time was observed (p < 0.001, η²_p = 0.103 and η²_p = 0.119, respectively), where Q1 was relatively the fastest in Tran1, Tran2 and Run2, and the slowest in Bike (p < 0.001). In long distance, in both sexes, a large discipline/transition × quartile interaction on relative time was observed (p < 0.001, η²_p = 0.208 and η²_p = 0.180, respectively), where Q1 was relatively the fastest in Tran1, Tran2 and Run2, and the slowest in Bike (p < 0.001). In summary, a similar trend of variation of pacing by performance level was observed in both sexes and distances with the fastest duathletes being the fastest in Run2 and both transitions, and the slowest in Bike.

Effects of detraining on breathing pattern and ventilatory efficiency in young soccer players

BACKGROUND

This study investigated the effects of detraining on breathing pattern. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a six-week detraining period on breathing patterns and ventilatory efficiency.

METHODS

Fourteen young soccer players were evaluated at the end of a competitive season and after a six-week detraining period. Assessment of respiratory efficiency was based on VE/VCO2 slope changes below 70% of exercise intensity. All participants underwent twice an incremental graded exercise test up to exhaustion.

RESULTS

No differences in breathing frequency and inspiratory time/total time ratio (Ti/Ttot) were found after detraining (P>0.05). Differences in tidal volume (VT), VT/Ti quotient and VE were significant (P<0.05) at between 40 to 100% of exercise intensity. The VE/VCO2 slope did not change (P>0.05) during a postdetraining maximal incremental test.

CONCLUSIONS

A six-week detraining period causes changes in inspiratory flow but does not affect the inspiratory time/total respiratory cycle time ratio. The overall ventilatory efficiency of the respiratory system remains constant and is not affected by detraining.
