Abstract
Pollution in aquatic ecosystems has been increasing drastically worldwide changing their water quality. Therefore, species must be adapted to these new scenarios. In Aguascalientes City, four representative urban reservoirs contain lead in the water column and extremely high concentrations of sediments. Therefore, an analysis was conducted to evaluate the resilience of zooplankton species to lead exposure in each reservoir using dormant and organisms. Results demonstrated a decrease range from 57.5 to 22.5% in overall diapausing egg hatching rate, while survivorship rate also decreased from 98 to 54% when organisms were exposed to the water of the four reservoirs and increasing lead concentrations. When Pb exposure increased, results showed a global negative effect on both hatching rate (decreasing from 58 to 30% at 0.09 mg L-1) and survivorship levels (decreasing from 100% to 0.07% at 0.09 mg L-1). We provide Species Sensitivity Distribution for both water reservoir dilutions and lead concentration to analyze diapausing eggs hatching and survivorship of offspring in the presence of same polluted conditions or lead of the autochthonous species found in reservoirs. Furthermore, specific analysis with two populations of the cladoceran Moina macrocopa showed clear dissimilar hatching patterns that suggested a different adaptive mechanism. Niagara population shows a hatching rate of approximately 25% in the first two days of reservoir water exposure, while UAA population drastically increased hatching rate to 75% on exposure at day seven. We provide the first record of bioaccumulation in ephippia of M. macrocopa.

Abstract
Metals are widely used in modern society harming the environment; their toxicity cause environmental adverse effects to many organisms including zooplankton. This contribution employed: (a) acute and chronic toxicity tests, (b) epifluorescence image analysis, and (c) atomic absorption techniques, to analyze toxicity of four trace (copper, iron, nickel, and zinc), and one non-trace metals (mercury) on the freshwater rotifer Euchlanis dilatata. This work integrated results of Bioconcentration Factors (BCF's), sites of entry and accumulation and to determine mechanisms of uptake and toxicity of these five metals of the freshwater rotifer Euchlanis dilatata. This integral analysis enhanced our understanding of knowledge on: (a) the toxicity mechanisms, (b) sites of metal entry and concentration inside the rotifer, (c) bioconcentration and body burdens. As expected, Hg the non-trace metal used here, was the most toxic. Our results suggest that the toxicity is ameliorated in the rotifer by selecting feeding avoiding the most toxic particles and reducing adverse effects on reproduction, until mortality per se reduces reproduction. The chronic effect on ingestion rate was quite sensitive for all metals whereas reproduction was slightly affected. The combination of acute and chronic tests and determination of BCF's for each metal allowed calculation of the acute and chronic body burdens. Body burdens again confirmed that mercury was the most toxic metal of the five employed here.

Abstract
Laboratory tests, by following standardized Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) protocols, were run for evaluating the acute effects of iron magnetic microparticles (MPs), recently proposed for lake restoration, on Chlorella sp. (algal growth) and on the rotifer B. calyciflorus (mortality). In addition, the MPs potential indirect effects on rotifer egg bank were assessed by performing hatching rate test with B. calyciflorus cysts in contact with dissolved iron (Tot-Fedis). In the algal growth test, no inhibition occurred at the two lowest MPs concentrations (0.01 and 0.05 g l-1) which would correspond, considering the adsorption efficiency ratio (Phosphorus: MPs), to P concentrations lower than 0.94 mg P l-1, much higher than typical concentrations found in natural waters. For higher MPs dose (EC50 for Chlorella sp. was 0.15 g l-1), no nutrient limitations but high turbidity and Tot-Fedis values cause negative effects on algal growth. For the case of B. calyciflorus, LC50 was 1.63 g MPs l-1 (corresponding to 30.7 mg P l-1). When analyzing Tot-Fedis effect, the hatching rate of B. calyciflorus cysts was 100% for all treatments. To sum up our results for B. calyciflorus acute and chronic toxicity tests, it is extremely unlikely the mortality of adult organisms in contact with MPs as well as an affectation of the rotifer egg bank. In conclusion, it is expected that MPs addition in a real whole-lake application cause minor lethal and sublethal effects on both Chlorella sp. and B. calyciflorus.

Abstract
Nuclear receptors (NRs) are a large family of transcription factors that are involved in many fundamental biological processes. NRs are considered to have originated from a common ancestor, and are highly conserved throughout the whole animal taxa. Therefore, the genome-wide identification of NR genes in an animal taxon can provide insight into the evolutionary tendencies of NRs. Here, we identified all the NR genes in the monogonont rotifer Brachionus spp., which are considered an ecologically key species due to their abundance and world-wide distribution. The NR family was composed of 40, 32, 29, and 32 genes in the genomes of the rotifers B. calyciflorus, B. koreanus, B. plicatilis, and B. rotundiformis, respectively, which were classified into seven distinct subfamilies. The composition of each subfamily was highly conserved between species, except for NR1O genes, suggesting that they have undergone sporadic evolutionary processes for adaptation to their different environmental pressures. In addition, despite the dynamics of NR evolution, the significance of the conserved endocrine system, particularly for estrogen receptor (ER)-signaling, in rotifers was discussed on the basis of phylogenetic analyses. The results of this study may help provide a better understanding the evolution of NRs, and expand our knowledge of rotifer endocrine systems.

Abstract
Aquatic organisms commonly respond to harsh conditions by forming diapausing stages, which enable populations to survive adverse periods forming egg banks. Production of diapausing eggs is frequently observed in monogonont rotifers, previously changing from asexual to partial sexual reproduction (mixis). In despite that zooplankton are frequently used in ecotoxicological assessment because of their sensitivity to various toxicants and their important role in the ecosystems, toxicity evaluations often consider the directly exposed population produced by parthenogenetic reproduction, exclusively. We assessed experimentally effects of exposure to metals on mixis delay and fitness of hatchlings of the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis obtained from a brackish water lagoon with high metal content, especially copper. We show that sub-lethal concentrations of copper affected traits related to sexual reproduction and diapausing egg production in the rotifer. Copper addition did not delay the start of mixis, suggesting that rapid initiation of mixis is promoted in risky environments, according to the hypothesis of mixis as an escape strategy. Higher investment in mixis was obtained when individuals were exposed to metal. Addition of copper negatively affected the hatching success of diapausing eggs and performance of hatchlings. Nevertheless, these effects were greater for individuals formed in non-metal conditions, suggesting an adaptive advantage of populations from natural sediments exposed to copper. These results highlight the ecological and evolutionary consequences of the presence of metals in freshwater environments by modulating diapause adaptive efficacy and the selective process in egg banks.

Abstract
Bioaccumulation of trivalent (CrIII) and hexavalent chromium (CrVI), and its adverse effects were studied in two rotifer species: Brachionus calyciflorus (two different strains), and Lecane quadridentata. Median Lethal Concentration (LC50) at 24 h of both species showed that CrVI is highly toxic: LC50 ranges from 4.7 × 10(-5) to 4 × 10(-6) mg L(-1)), compared with CrIII: LC50 ranges from 0.64 to 1.279 mg L(-1). Using the LC50 as an exposure concentration, and using atomic absorption, the bioconcentration factor (BCF) was obtained and BCFs of rotifers exposed to CrIII are four orders of magnitude lower than BCFs of rotifers exposed to CrVI. The effect of Cr on the elemental composition of the two species of rotifers in their structures by X-ray microanalysis by energy dispersion showed that Cr is found in intoxicated rotifers, but not in control rotifers. The basal immunoreactivity to metallothioneins is greater in B. calyciflorus than L. quadridentata. The immunoreactivity to metallothioneins decreases in B. calyciflorus when is exposed to CrIII, in contrast in L. quadridentata the immunoreactivity to metallothioneins increase when is exposed to CrIII, and the immunoreactivity to CrVI in L. quadridentata decrease. A mechanism is proposed in which the harder lorica of L. quadridentata acts as a barrier and accumulator of CrVI, and allows for attenuating responses like metallothionein production in L. quadridentata. Instead, in B. calyciflorus the lack of a harder lorica allows for deeper penetration of CrVI, and no time to produce attenuating measures.

Abstract
Invertebrate organisms commonly respond to environmental fluctuation by entering diapause. Production of diapause in monogonont rotifers involves a previous switch from asexual to partial sexual reproduction. Although zooplankton have been used in ecotoxicological assays, often their true vulnerability to toxicants is underestimated by not incorporating the sexual phase. We experimentally analyzed traits involved in sexual reproduction and diapause in the cyclically parthenogenetic freshwater rotifer, Brachionus calyciflorus, exposed to arsenic, a metalloid naturally found in high concentrations in desert zones, focusing on the effectiveness of diapause as an escape response in the face of an adverse condition. Addition of sublethal concentrations of arsenic modified the pattern of diapause observed in the rotifer: investment in diapause with arsenic addition peaked earlier and higher than in non-toxicant conditions, which suggests that sexual investment could be enhanced in highly stressed environmental conditions by increased responsiveness to stimulation. Nevertheless, eggs produced in large amount with arsenic, were mostly low quality, and healthy-looking eggs had lower hatching success, therefore it is unclear whether this pattern is optimum in an environment with arsenic, or if rather arsenic presence in water bodies disturbs the optimal allocation of offspring entering diapause. We observed high accumulation of arsenic in organisms exposed to constant concentration after several generations, which suggests that arsenic may be accumulated transgenerationally. The sexual phase in rotifers may be more sensitive to environmental conditions than the asexual one, therefore diapause attributes should be considered in ecotoxicological assessment because of its ecological and evolutionary implications on lakes biodiversity.

Abstract
The toxicity of atmospheric fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in Atlanta is assessed using freshwater rotifers (Brachionus calyciflorus). The PM-laden quartz filters were extracted in both water and methanol. Aerosol extracts were passed through a C-18 column to separate the PM components into hydrophobic and hydrophilic fractions. Toxicity data reported in the units of LC50 (concentration that kills 50% of the test population in 24 h) shows that ambient particles are toxic to the rotifers with LC50 values ranging from 5 to 400 μg of PM. The methanol extract of the aerosols was substantially more toxic (8 ± 6 times) to the rotifers compared to the water extracts. A sizeable fraction (>70%) of toxicity was found to be associated with the hydrophobic fraction of PM. However, none of the bulk aerosol species was strongly correlated with the LC50 values suggesting a complicated mechanism of toxicity probably involving synergistic interactions of various PM components.
