Mapping of metals contamination in coastal sediments around the world in the last decades: A bibliometric analysis and systematic review

The quality of coastal sediments contaminated by metals has been discussed for decades worldwide. However, there is a lack of information on the current situation and trends in this research field. For this reason, this is the first study to present an integrated analysis of bibliometric mapping and systematic review, using the Scopus database. The subject has grown exponentially, with a notable increase in citations and predicted increases for the coming years. The Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese authors were highlighted. The main areas of study were the Yellow Sea, Adriatic Sea and Persian Gulf. The main metals related were Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr and Cd, linked to anthropogenic sources such as agriculture, domestic sewage and mining and industry activities. The IGEO proved to be the main index for assessing pollution. This research is useful for pointing out the needs of future research, supporting the development of this topic.

Fast and easily obtained information about mobilizable metals from sediment samples. Extraction assisted by benzothiophene-based ionic liquids

A fast and easy method for trace metal extraction on sediments was developed in our laboratories. Three new stable S-metylbenzothiophenium salts were employed along with microwaves to modify the BCR protocol to obtain the concentration of metals of the first two fractions in only one step. The optimum conditions were obtained with 0.125 g of sediment irradiated at 250 W for 30 s at 120 °C, in 5 ml of an aqueous mixture of 10 mM of 1,2-dimethylbenzothiophenium tetrafluoroborate and 0.5 M of hydroxylamine chlorhydrate at pH 2. The method validation was carried out employing BCR 701. The extracted metals were determined by ICP OES. A student's paired t-test was applied with the reference method, giving satisfactory results.

An experimental design for the optimization of the extraction methods of metallic mobile fractions from environmental solid samples

The evaluation of the cadmium and lead mobile forms from environmental solid samples provides information about their mobility and bioavailability. In the present study, the Cd and Pb mobile fractions were obtained by two modified extraction methods applied to industrial and acidic pH soils or to polluted sediments. In order to highlight that the extraction procedure does not significantly influence the quantitative atomic absorption spectrometric determination of cadmium and lead, the robustness of the extraction methods was evaluated and proven applying a Youden and Steiner factorial design. Within this experimental design, the shaking rate, the shaking time, and the solid/liquid extraction ratio were modified. The measurement uncertainty of the whole analytical procedure was assessed, the contribution of the factors involved in the extraction process being insignificant compared to the other uncertainty sources. The importance of the study is related to the fact that it proves the applicability in the routine laboratory practice of the modified extraction methods by increasing the extraction ratio following thorough optimization and robustness studies.

Environmental quality in sediments of Cadiz and Algeciras Bays based on a weight of evidence approach (southern Spanish coast)

This research applies an integrated sediment quality assessment method using a weight of evidence approach to Cadiz and Algeciras Bays (southern Spain). The method is composed of several analyses (particle size profile, aqua regia extractable metals, acid labile metals, total organic carbon, toxicity bioassay with Photobacterium phosphoreum and macrobenthic community alteration). The proposed method provides a single result, the environmental degradation index (EDI). EDI defined samples as low degraded (outer areas of both bays) and moderately degraded (Inner Bay of Cadiz Bay, the surroundings of Algeciras port and the northern part of Algeciras Bay). These samples showed the highest concentration of aqua regia extractable metals, which exceeded effects range-low (ERL) for Zn (51-176mg/l), Cu (11-54mg/l), As (4.3-9.5mg/l), Hg (0.17-0.28mg/l), Ni (23-82mg/l), and. Cr (37-134mg/l). They also exceeded some quality criteria for total organic carbon (4.0-6.5%) and toxicity (120-240TU/g) and showed poor results for macrobenthic community.
