Ultrasonic assisted magnetic solid phase extraction based on the use of magnetic waste-tyre derived activated carbon modified with methyltrioctylammonium chloride adsorbent for the preconcentration and analysis of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in wastewater

Vortex-assisted supramolecular solvent dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction of ketoprofen and naproxen from environmental water before chromatographic analysis: response surface methodology optimisation

A microextraction procedure that is rapid and simple to extract and preconcentrate ketoprofen and naproxen is proposed. An environmentally friendly supramolecular solvent was applied as an extraction solvent and proved to be efficient in the extraction of ketoprofen and naproxen from environmental water. The design of experiment approach was used to screen, optimize significant parameters, and determine optimum experimental conditions. Under optimized experimental conditions, the vortex-assisted supramolecular solvent dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction provided a good linearity (0.57–700 µg L−1), low limits of detection (0.17–0.24 µg L−1) and extraction reproducibility below 9%. The high percentage relative recoveries (93.6–101.4%) indicated that the method is not affected by matrix. The practical applicability of the method was assessed by analysing ketoprofen and naproxen in river water and effluent wastewater samples. Both analytes were found in effluent wastewater.

Overview of African water resources contamination by contaminants of emerging concern

This review look at several classes of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in conventional and non-conventional water resources across the African continent's five regions. According to the review, pharmaceuticals, endocrine-disrupting chemicals, personal care products, pesticides, per- and polyfluoroalkyl compounds, and microplastics were found in conventional and non-conventional water resources. Most conventional water resources, such as rivers, streams, lakes, wells, and boreholes, are used as drinking water sources. Non-conventional water sources, such as treated wastewater (effluents), are used for domestic and agricultural purposes. However, CECs remain part of the treated wastewater, which is being discharged to surface water or used for agriculture. Thus, wastewater (effluent) is the main contributor to the pollution of other water resources. For African countries, the prevalence of rising emerging pollutants in water poses a severe environmental threat. There are different adverse effects of CECs, including the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, ecotoxicological effects, and several endocrine disorders. Therefore, this needs the urgent attention of the African Union, policymakers, Non-Governmental Organizations, and researchers to come together and tackle the problem.

Health effects and risks associated with the occurrence of pharmaceuticals and their metabolites in marine organisms and seafood

Pharmaceuticals and their metabolites are continuously invading the marine environment due to their input from the land such as their disposal into the drains and sewers which is mostly followed by their transfer into wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Their incomplete removal in WWTPs introduces pharmaceuticals into oceans and surface water. To date, various pharmaceuticals and their metabolites have been detected in marine environment. Their occurrence in marine organisms raises concerns regarding toxic effects and development of drug resistant genes. Therefore, it is crucial to review the health effects and risks associated with the presence of pharmaceuticals and their metabolites in marine organisms and seafood. This is an important study area which is related to the availability of seafood and its quality. Hence, this study provides a critical review of the information available in literature which relates to the occurrence and toxic effects of pharmaceuticals in marine organisms and seafood. This was initiated through conducting a literature search focussing on articles investigating the occurrence and effects of pharmaceuticals and their metabolites in marine organisms and seafood. In general, most studies on the monitoring of pharmaceuticals and their metabolites in marine environment are conducted in well developed countries such as Europe while research in developing countries is still limited. Pharmaceuticals present in freshwater are mostly found in seawater and marine organisms. Furthermore, the toxicity caused by different pharmaceutical mixtures was observed to be more severe than that of individual compounds.

Activated carbon derived from waste orange and lemon peels for the adsorption of methyl orange and methylene blue dyes from wastewater

The study of adsorbent behaviour in laboratory conditions helps to predict the adsorption process in a large industrial scale. In this study, orange and lemon peels-derived activated carbon (OLPAC) was successfully synthesized and activated using phosphoric acid. Characterization was performed on the OLPAC and the material was used for the removal of methyl orange (MO) and methylene (MB) dyes from wastewater. The results of the scanning electron microscope and N₂ adsorption/desorption examination affirmed that the prepared nanocomposite is permeable, which is an advantage for the efficient removal of contaminants. Optimal conditions for the batch removal process were investigated using a one-factor time approach in different conditions of adsorption (Dye concentration 50–200 mg L⁻¹, pH 2–10, adsorbent mass 0.010–0.8, and contact time 5–180 min. The adsorption isotherm equilibrium data were examined by Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin, isotherm model. As shown by the correlation coefficient (R²), the data were best described by Langmuir isotherms with maximum adsorption capacities of 33 and 38 mg g^─1 for methyl orange and methylene blue, respectively. Adsorption kinetic data were described using the pseudo-second-order model which suggests that adsorption of MO and MB was by chemisorption mechanism. The method was applicable to real wastewater samples, with satisfactory removal percentages of OM and MB (96 and 98 %). The results of this study show that OLPAC is an inexpensive biosorbent that is successfully utilized in removing methyl orange and methylene blue dyes from wastewater.

Synthesis and Characterization of a Magnetic Carbon Nanofiber Derived from Bacterial Cellulose for the Removal of Diclofenac from Water

Engineering and synthesis of novel materials are vital for removing emerging pollutants, such as pharmaceuticals from contaminated water. In this study, a magnetic carbon nanofiber (MCF) fabricated from bacterial cellulose was tested for the adsorption of diclofenac from water. The physical and chemical properties of the synthesized adsorbent were examined by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), field emission transmission electron microscopy (FETEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), Raman spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The characterization results showed that the MCF is a carbon nanofiber with a three-dimensional interconnect network, forming a porous material (mesopores and macropores) with a specific surface area of 222.3 m²/g. The removal of diclofenac (10 mg/L) by the MCF (0.75 g/L) was efficient (93.2%) and fast (in 20 min). According to the Langmuir isotherm model fitting, the maximum adsorption capacity of the MCF was 43.56 mg/g. Moreover, continuous adsorption of diclofenac onto MCF was investigated in a fixed-bed column, and the maximum adsorption capacity was found to be 67 mg/g. The finding of this research revealed that the MCF could be a promising adsorbent used to remove diclofenac from water, while it can be easily recovered by magnetic separation.

Uptake, Occurrence, and Effects of Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs and Analgesics in Plants and Edible Crops

The plant uptake of pharmaceuticals that include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and analgesics from contaminated environment has benefits and drawbacks. These pharmaceuticals enter plants mostly through irrigation with contaminated water and application of sewage sludge as soil fertilizer. Aquatic plants withdraw these pharmaceuticals from water through their roots. Numerous studies have observed the translocation of these pharmaceuticals from the roots into the aerial tissues. Furthermore, the occurrence of the metabolites of NSAIDs in plants has been observed. This article provides an in-depth critical review of the plant uptake of NSAIDs and analgesics, their translocation, and toxic effects on plant species. In addition, the occurrence of metabolites of NSAIDs in plants and the application of constructed wetlands using plants for remediation are reviewed. Factors that affect the plant uptake and translocation of these pharmaceuticals are examined. Gaps and future research are provided to guide forthcoming investigations on important aspects that worth explorations.
