Understanding the Self-Harming Behavior of Filipino Male Detainees (32-58 Years Old): A Descriptive Phenomenology

Self-harming behavior (SHB) has become a significant health issue among several populations, including adolescents, traumatized individuals, and persons deprived of liberty. Undoubtedly, incarceration takes a toll on inmates' mental health due to several stressful experiences while in custody. These taxing events make them vulnerable to maladaptive coping strategies, such as SHB. To date, many studies on this behavior have focused on high-income countries. Research has not explored much on this behavior among inmates in developing countries such as the Philippines. This phenomenological inquiry aims to characterize the experiences of select older male Filipino detainees engaged in SHB. Through vertical and horizontal analyses of the narratives shared, this study conceptualized the Self-Harming Behavior of Older Filipino Detainees as Tension and Compression. This model shows the forces that either pull or push the detainees to engage in self-injurious acts. Specifically, the seven themes surfaced: life dispositions, jail ecology, emotional baggage, physically and chemically-induced self-harming behavior, consequences, coping strategies, and cognizance. Findings from this inquiry may necessitate the provision of adequate and comprehensive prevention and intervention services for the self-harmers in jail, which are geared toward implementing a thorough psychological evaluation and promoting sound psychological well-being.

Changes in successful aging and its related indicators among community-dwelling older adults: The Korean Frailty and Aging Cohort Study (KFACS)

This study aims to determine the prevalence of successful aging (SA) and examine the association of changes in the indicators of SA and variations in SA status between 2016 and 2020. The study included 548 participants recruited for the Korean Frailty and Aging Cohort Study (KFACS). Compared to participants who achieved SA in 2016 (N = 393, 71.7%), the number of older adults with SA decreased by 7.8% in 2020. Among older adults preserving SA (SA→SA group, 54%), there were relatively small numbers of older adults who successfully maintained indicators, including chronic diseases (no→no, 9.5%), employment (yes→yes, 12.2%), and volunteer activities (yes→yes, 2.9%). Our findings suggest that interventions to strengthen the physical and psychological function of older adults are needed, and social support needs to be guaranteed to improve social engagement for older adults.

Determinants of healthy ageing: a systematic review of contemporary literature

Background

Healthy ageing frameworks have been highly explored. Our objective was to assess existing frameworks for healthy ageing and to identify commonly described factors that can potentially act as determinants of healthy ageing.

Methods

We carried out a systematic review by searching five electronic databases (EMBASE, MEDLINE, Cochrane, PsychINFO, and CINAHL) from January 2010 to November 2020 to capture contemporary evidence. Eligible studies needed to report a clear framework of healthy ageing in humans, within one or more of three domains (physical, mental/cognitive, social), in English. No restriction was placed on geographical location. Retrospective studies, studies that did not report a framework of healthy ageing, and studies with a focus on diagnostic measures were excluded.

Results

Of 3329 identified records, nine studies met our eligibility criteria and were included. Most of the studies were qualitative or cross sectional, and a majority were carried out in Asia, followed by North America, Australia, and Africa. The ten determinants identified for healthy ageing include physical activity, diet, self-awareness, outlook/attitude, life-long learning, faith, social support, financial security, community engagement, and independence.

Conclusions

We identified ten determinants of healthy ageing proposed by the contemporary evidence base. There appears to be increasing acknowledgement of the instrumental role of social and mental/cognitive well-being as determinants of healthy ageing. The extent to which each determinant contributes to healthy ageing requires further evaluation.

Exploring the promise of intersectionality for promoting justice-involved women's health research and policy

The perspective of intersectionality has gained widespread scholarly interest and been employed across many different disciplines, including criminology. This perspective focuses on interlocking systems of oppression and the need to work toward structural changes to promote social justice and equity. The present article aimed to explore the potential of intersectionality for advancing health research and policy regarding justice-involved women, in different phases of the judicial process, based on the extant literature.First, employing an intersectional approach to analyze the issue of health during the pre-incarceration period may facilitate identification of the structural and representational factors underlying the barriers that women face in obtaining health services, which elevates the risk to their health. Furthermore, adopting an intersectionality perspective to explore women's health during incarceration may shed light on vulnerable, invisible subpopulations of women such as incarcerated older women and their health problems, and help identify the structural barriers to carceral health services and the role of stigma in inflicting and normalizing harmful practices within prison walls. In addition, an intersectionality lens highlights the risk of unintended use of scholarly knowledge regarding the health of justice-involved women. Last, an intersectionality perspective is particularly relevant for research of the reentry of justice-involved women. In particular, it can be used to examine gender-sensitive reentry services that ignore other axes of marginalization, such as class and race, generating a powerful dynamic that results in partial service, denial of access to therapeutic resources, and possible exposure to health-damaging environments.Through an exploration of the extant literature on justice-involved women, I endeavored to demonstrate that an intersectional framework offers powerful tools to both challenge and strengthen gender frameworks within criminology. This will make it possible to move beyond consideration of gender alone, to understand how systems of oppression based on race, age and other social locations intersect and combine to construct health disadvantages among justice-involved women. This highlights the needs for a new research agenda and policy that integrate the intersectional framework with health theories to provide a more developed understanding of health among justice-involved women.

Successful Aging and Mortality Risk: The Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (2006-2014)

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study is to examine the association of successful aging with mortality and further find gender differences in the effect of components of successful aging on mortality risks.

DESIGN

Retrospective cohort study.

SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS

A total of 3848 adults aged 65 and older from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (2006-2014) data.

MEASURES

Successful aging was defined as success in the following 7 components: absence of major disease, no depression, no freedom from disability, high cognitive and physical function, active social engagement, and satisfaction with life. All-cause mortality was measured by death certificate and family interview.

RESULTS

In both genders, the mortality rate was higher in the older adults who did not achieve successful aging than in their counterparts (men: hazard ratio [HR] = 1.69, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.18-2.43; and women: HR = 2.37, 95% CI 1.21-4.63). All components of no successful aging were associated with an increased risk of mortality except for no satisfaction with life in females. Mortality rates were predominant in major disease (HR = 1.86, 95% CI 1.54-2.25) and depressive symptoms (HR = 1.62, 95% CI 1.26-2.10) in males, and disability (HR = 2.08, 95% CI 1.68-2.57) and low physical functioning (HR = 2.31, 95% CI 1.79-2.98) were predominant in females.

CONCLUSION/IMPLICATION

We found that older Koreans who did not achieve successful aging had a higher risk of all-cause mortality than successful agers. There were gender differences in mortality risks across all components of successful aging.
