History of Discovery of Parasitic Crustacea

Parasitic Crustacea have been present in scientific literature since Linnaeus introduced the first classification system (binomial nomenclature). Crustaceans are considered to be the most morphologically diverse arthropods, with currently 19 parasitic orders known to science. This chapter reviews the history of discovery for each of the major parasitic Crustacea groups, highlighting some of the key developments that have influenced our current understanding of these parasites. Each taxonomic group is briefly introduced, followed by a synopsis on some of the outstanding contributions within that group. Knowledge development is followed, from the first parasites discovered to other historical highlights that influenced the groups up to this point. Other important discoveries (both taxonomic and ecological) are also noted, serving as a preview to the host-parasite interactions covered in the subsequent chapters. Additionally, several researchers who have added significant contributions to our knowledge of the parasitic Crustacea (specifically in taxonomy and discovery) are introduced, along with photographs of a select few. This historical review of the crustacean parasites provides a background to these diverse and abundant organisms and will contribute to a better understanding of their unique niche in the aquatic environment.

Structure and Ultrastructure of the Endodermal Region of the Alimentary Tract in the Freshwater Shrimp Neocaridina heteropoda (Crustacea, Malacostraca)

The freshwater shrimp Neocaridina heteropoda (Crustacea, Malacostraca, Decapoda) originates from Asia and is one of the species that is widely available all over the world because it is the most popular shrimp that is bred in aquaria. The structure and the ultrastructure of the midgut have been described using X-ray microtomography, transmission electron microscopy, light and fluorescence microscopes. The endodermal region of the alimentary system in N. heteropoda consists of an intestine and a hepatopancreas. No differences were observed in the structure and ultrastructure of males and females of the shrimp that were examined. The intestine is a tube-shaped organ and the hepatopancreas is composed of two large diverticles that are divided into the blind-end tubules. Hepatopancreatic tubules have three distinct zones - proximal, medial and distal. Among the epithelial cells of the intestine, two types of cells were distinguished - D and E-cells, while three types of cells were observed in the epithelium of the hepatopancreas - F, B and E-cells. Our studies showed that the regionalization in the activity of cells occurs along the length of the hepatopancreatic tubules. The role and ultrastructure of all types of epithelial cells are discussed, with the special emphasis on the function of the E-cells, which are the midgut regenerative cells. Additionally, we present the first report on the existence of an intercellular junction that is connected with the E-cells of Crustacea.

Sophisticated digestive systems in early arthropods

Understanding the way in which animals diversified and radiated during their early evolutionary history remains one of the most captivating of scientific challenges. Integral to this is the 'Cambrian explosion', which records the rapid emergence of most animal phyla, and for which the triggering and accelerating factors, whether environmental or biological, are still unclear. Here we describe exceptionally well-preserved complex digestive organs in early arthropods from the early Cambrian of China and Greenland with functional similarities to certain modern crustaceans and trace these structures through the early evolutionary lineage of fossil arthropods. These digestive structures are assumed to have allowed for more efficient digestion and metabolism, promoting carnivory and macrophagy in early arthropods via predation or scavenging. This key innovation may have been of critical importance in the radiation and ecological success of Arthropoda, which has been the most diverse and abundant invertebrate phylum since the Cambrian.

The role of autophagy in the midgut epithelium of Eubranchipus grubii (Crustacea, Branchiopoda, Anostraca)

Eubranchipus grubii (Crustacea, Branchiopoda, Anostraca) is an omnivorous filter feeder whose life span lasts no more than 12 weeks. Adult males and females of E. grubii were used for ultrastructural studies of the midgut epithelium and an analysis of autophagy. The midgut epithelium is formed by columnar digestive cells and no regenerative cells were observed. A distinct regionalization in the distribution of organelles appears - basal, perinuclear and apical regions were distinguished. No differences in the ultrastructure of digestive cells were observed between males and females. Autophagic disintegration of organelles occurs throughout the midgut epithelium. Degenerated organelles accumulate in the neighborhood of Golgi complexes, and these complexes presumably take part in phagophore and autophagosome formation. In some cases, the phagophore also surrounds small autophagosomes, which had appeared earlier. Fusion of autophagosomes and lysosomes was not observed, but lysosomes are enclosed during autophagosome formation. Autophagosomes and autolysosomes are discharged into the midgut lumen due to apocrine secretion. Autophagy plays a role in cell survival by protecting the cell from cell death.

The effect of starvation on the ultrastructure of the digestive cells of Dolops ranarum (Stuhlmann, 1891) (Crustacea: Branchiura)

Transmission electron microscopy was conducted on the digestive epithelium of the crustacean ectoparasite Dolops ranarum to elucidate its ultrastructure for the first time, both in a nourished and starved condition. Specimens were collected from the Limpopo Drainage System in South Africa, and the specimens were killed and dissected in Todd's fixative. The anterior midgut is composed mostly of absorptive cells or R cells, while the diverticula are composed of R cells and of F cells, which are moderately abundant in rough endoplasmic reticulum. They are probably responsible for producing digestive enzymes. The posterior midgut is composed of papilliform B cells with large apically located vesicles and R' cells devoid of cell inclusions. Under starvation, specimens survive for a maximum of 12 days; R cells show the most conspicuous changes in ultrastructural characteristics. It is concluded that D. ranarum has adapted to short-term survival only without a host.
