Repository and Mutation based Particle Swarm Optimization (RMPSO): A new PSO variant applied to reconstruction of Gene Regulatory Network

An Improved Grey Wolf Optimization with Multi-Strategy Ensemble for Robot Path Planning

Grey wolf optimization (GWO) is a meta-heuristic algorithm inspired by the hierarchy and hunting behavior of grey wolves. GWO has the superiorities of simpler concept and fewer adjustment parameters, and has been widely used in different fields. However, there are some disadvantages in avoiding prematurity and falling into local optimum. This paper presents an improved grey wolf optimization (IGWO) to ameliorate these drawbacks. Firstly, a modified position update mechanism for pursuing high quality solutions is developed. By designing an ameliorative position update formula, a proper balance between the exploration and exploitation is achieved. Moreover, the leadership hierarchy is strengthened by proposing adaptive weights of α, β and δ. Then, a dynamic local optimum escape strategy is proposed to reinforce the ability of the algorithm to escape from the local stagnations. Finally, some individuals are repositioned with the aid of the positions of the leaders. These individuals are pulled to new positions near the leaders, helping to accelerate the convergence of the algorithm. To verify the effectiveness of IGWO, a series of contrast experiments are conducted. On the one hand, IGWO is compared with some state-of-the-art GWO variants and several promising meta-heuristic algorithms on 20 benchmark functions. Experimental results indicate that IGWO performs better than other competitors. On the other hand, the applicability of IGWO is verified by a robot global path planning problem, and simulation results demonstrate that IGWO can plan shorter and safer paths. Therefore, IGWO is successfully applied to the path planning as a new method.

Multi-objective Simulated Annealing Variants to Infer Gene Regulatory Network: A Comparative Study

Gene Regulatory Network (GRN) is formed due to mutual transcriptional regulation within a set of protein coding genes in cellular context of an organism. Computational inference of GRN is important to understand the behavior of each gene in terms of change in its protein production rate (expression level). As Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) is efficient in GRN modeling, a bi-objective RNN formulation has been applied here. Based on Archived Multi Objective Simulated Annealing (AMOSA), four algorithms, namely, AMOSA Revised (AMOSAR), Modified Freezing based AMOSA (AMOFSA), Tabu based AMOSA (AMOTSA) and Modified Freezing and Tabu based AMOSA (AMOFTSA) have been proposed and applied to RNN (treated as GRN) for parameter learning taking four gene expression time series datasets. Comparative studies on the performance of the algorithms (based on each dataset) have been made in terms of the number of GRNs obtained in the final non-dominated front and the performance metrics, namely, recall, precision and f1 score. Two proposed variants, namely, AMOFSA and AMOTSA have been found competitive in performance. Experimental observations and statistical analysis show that, modified algorithms are better than AMOSAR and the state-of-the-art algorithms in respect of the above-mentioned metrics.

A Wind Energy Supplier Bidding Strategy Using Combined EGA-Inspired HPSOIFA Optimizer and Deep Learning Predictor

As the integration of large-scale wind energy is increasing into the electricity grids, the role of wind energy suppliers should be investigated as a price-maker as their participation would influence the locational marginal price (LMP) of electricity. The existing bidding strategies for a wind energy supplier faces limitations with respect to the potential cooperation, other competitors’ bidding behavior, network loss, and uncertainty of wind production (WP) and balancing market price (BMP). Hence, to solve these problems, a novel bidding strategy (BS) for a wind power supplier as a price-maker has been proposed in this paper. The new algorithm, called the evolutionary game approach (EGA) inspired hybrid particle swarm optimization and improved firefly algorithm (HPSOIFA), has been proposed to handle the bidding issue. The bidding behavior of power suppliers, including conventional power suppliers, has been encoded as one species to obtain the equilibrium where the EGA can explore dynamically reasonable behavior changes of the opponents. Each species of behavior change has been exploited by the HPSOIFA to improve the optimization solutions. Moreover, a deep learning algorithm, namely deep belief network, has been implemented for improving the accuracy of the forecasting results considering the WP and BMP, and the uncertainty revealed in the WP and BMP has been modeled by quantile regression (QR). Finally, the Shapley value (SV) has been calculated to estimate the benefits of cooperative power suppliers. The presented case studies have verified that the proposed algorithm and the established bidding strategy exhibit higher effectiveness.

A Species Conservation-Based Particle Swarm Optimization with Local Search for Dynamic Optimization Problems

In the optimization of problems in dynamic environments, algorithms need to not only find the global optimal solutions in a specific environment but also to continuously track the moving optimal solutions over dynamic environments. To address this requirement, a species conservation-based particle swarm optimization (PSO), combined with a spatial neighbourhood best searching technique, is proposed. This algorithm employs a species conservation technique to save the found optima distributed in the search space, and these saved optima either transferred into the new population or replaced by the better individual within a certain distance in the subsequent evolution. The particles in the population are attracted by its history best and the optimal solution nearby based on the Euclidean distance other than the index-based. An experimental study is conducted based on the moving peaks benchmark to verify the performance of the proposed algorithm in comparison with several state-of-the-art algorithms widely used in dynamic optimization problems. The experimental results show the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed algorithm for tracking the moving optima in dynamic environments.

Particle Swarm Optimisation: A Historical Review Up to the Current Developments

The Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO) algorithm was inspired by the social and biological behaviour of bird flocks searching for food sources. In this nature-based algorithm, individuals are referred to as particles and fly through the search space seeking for the global best position that minimises (or maximises) a given problem. Today, PSO is one of the most well-known and widely used swarm intelligence algorithms and metaheuristic techniques, because of its simplicity and ability to be used in a wide range of applications. However, in-depth studies of the algorithm have led to the detection and identification of a number of problems with it, especially convergence problems and performance issues. Consequently, a myriad of variants, enhancements and extensions to the original version of the algorithm, developed and introduced in the mid-1990s, have been proposed, especially in the last two decades. In this article, a systematic literature review about those variants and improvements is made, which also covers the hybridisation and parallelisation of the algorithm and its extensions to other classes of optimisation problems, taking into consideration the most important ones. These approaches and improvements are appropriately summarised, organised and presented, in order to allow and facilitate the identification of the most appropriate PSO variant for a particular application.
