Visual field×response hand interactions and level priming in the processing of laterally presented hierarchical stimuli

Global precedence changes by environment: A systematic review and meta-analysis on effect of perceptual field variables on global-local visual processing

Perceptual organization and, in particular, visual processing have been debated for many years. The global precedence effect in local-global visual processing, as introduced by David Navon, refers to the condition that global aspects of a scene are processed more rapidly than are local details. This perceptual dynamic is influenced by many factors that can be divided into two major categories: subjective or internal factors (e.g., age, disorder, culture) and the external factors called perceptual field variables (PFVs; e.g., stimulus size, eccentricity, sparsity). The aim of the current study was to identify the latter factors using a meta-analysis followed by a systematic literature review. In accordance of the standard framework suggested by PRISMA, 28 PFVs were observed through a literature search on articles published from 1982 to 2019, among which 10 factors have been qualified to be included in a meta-analysis. Subsequently, the random effects model proposed by Hedges and Olkin was used to estimate pooled effect sizes of PFVs. These effect sizes were used to compare and sort the PFVs on the basis of their intensity. According to Cohen's index, our analyses show that relevance, sparsity, and solidness type are categorized as small effects; visual field, level repetition, spatial frequency, and shape type are categorized as medium effects; and congruency, eccentricity, and size as large effect PFVs on global precedence.

Response Hand Differentially Affects Action Word Processing

Recent approaches in the tradition of theories of semantic and conceptual “grounding” emphasize the role of perceptual and motor knowledge in language as well as action understanding. However, the role of the two cerebral hemispheres in integrating action-motor and language processes is not clear yet. The present study looked at the influence of a simultaneous motor tapping task on word processing. In a lexical decision task, uni-manual and bi-manual hand-related, and foot-related action verbs were presented in the left and right visual half-field. A group of healthy participants performed tapping with the left hand and lexical decisions with their right hand. In a second group of participants, the reversed hand response pattern was applied. The results showed that response hand had an influence on functional lateralization of word processing when responses were executed with the non-dominant hand. Projecting words to the ipsilateral hemisphere relative to the hemisphere performing lexical decisions led to significantly decreased performance. The results showed that left hand responses led to an increased accuracy for hand-related in contrast to foot-related action verbs. The findings suggest an influence of response hand on action word processing.

Hemispheric specialization for global and local processing: A direct comparison of linguistic and non-linguistic stimuli

It is often assumed that the human brain processes the global and local properties of visual stimuli in a lateralized fashion, with a left hemisphere (LH) specialization for local detail, and a right hemisphere (RH) specialization for global form. However, the evidence for such global-local lateralization stems predominantly from studies using linguistic stimuli, the processing of which has shown to be LH lateralized in itself. In addition, some studies have reported a reversal of global-local lateralization when using non-linguistic stimuli. Accordingly, it remains unclear whether global-local lateralization may in fact be stimulus-specific. To address this issue, we asked participants to respond to linguistic and non-linguistic stimuli that were presented in the right and left visual fields, allowing for first access by the LH and RH, respectively. The results showed global-RH and local-LH advantages for both stimulus types, but the global lateralization effect was larger for linguistic stimuli. Furthermore, this pattern of results was found to be robust, as it was observed regardless of two other task manipulations. We conclude that the instantiation and direction of global and local lateralization is not stimulus-specific. However, the magnitude of global,-but not local-, lateralization is dependent on stimulus type.

Local and global level-priming occurs for hierarchical stimuli composed of outlined, but not filled-in, elements

When attention is directed to the local or global level of a hierarchical stimulus, attending to that same scale of information is subsequently facilitated. This effect is called level-priming, and in its pure form, it has been dissociated from stimulus- or response-repetition priming. In previous studies, pure level-priming has been demonstrated using hierarchical stimuli composed of alphanumeric forms consisting of lines. Here, we test whether pure level-priming extends to hierarchical configurations of generic geometric forms composed of elements that can be depicted either outlined or filled-in. Interestingly, whereas hierarchical stimuli composed of outlined elements benefited from pure level-priming, for both local and global targets, those composed of filled-in elements did not. The results are not readily attributable to differences in spatial frequency content, suggesting that forms composed of outlined and filled-in elements are treated differently by attention and/or priming mechanisms. Because our results present a surprising limit on attentional persistence to scale, we propose that other findings in the attention and priming literature be evaluated for their generalizability across a broad range of stimulus classes, including outlined and filled-in depictions.
