The motor features of action verbs: fMRI evidence using picture naming

Dynamic causal modeling of reorganization of memory and language networks in temporal lobe epilepsy

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the alterations of language and memory functions using dynamic causal modeling, in order to identify the epileptogenic hemisphere in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE).

METHODS

Twenty-two patients with left TLE and 13 patients with right TLE underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during four memory and four language mapping tasks. Dynamic causal modeling (DCM) was employed on fMRI data to examine effective directional connectivity in memory and language networks and the alterations in people with TLE compared to healthy individuals.

RESULTS

DCM analysis suggested that TLE can influence the memory network more widely compared to the language network. For memory mapping, it demonstrated overall hyperconnectivity from the left hemisphere to the other cranial regions in the picture encoding, and from the right hemisphere to the other cranial regions in the word encoding tasks. On the contrary, overall hypoconnectivity was seen from the brain hemisphere contralateral to the seizure onset in the retrieval tasks. DCM analysis further manifested hypoconnectivity between the brain's hemispheres in the language network in patients with TLE compared to controls. The CANTAB® neuropsychological test revealed a negative correlation for the left TLE and a positive correlation for the right TLE cohorts for the connections extracted by DCM that were significantly different between the left and right TLE cohorts.

INTERPRETATION

In this study, dynamic causal modeling evidenced the reorganization of language and memory networks in TLE that can be used for a better understanding of the effects of TLE on the brain's cognitive functions.

Language processing in Internet use disorder: Task-based fMRI study

Internet use disorder (IUD) is generally conceptualized as a fast-growing behavioral addiction. Several structural and functional brain alterations have been revealed in this condition, but previous behavioral studies indicated that language systems may also be impaired. We used a silent word generation task to induce brain activation in Broca’s area and other parts of the language system. Blood-oxygen-level-dependent activation analysis and psychophysiological interaction analysis were applied to assess functional brain changes. IUD was measured by the Problematic Internet Use Questionnaire and two additional questions concerning usage time and subjective rating of addiction. According to our key findings, areas strongly related to the default mode network were altered in IUD during the task. Moreover, Broca’s area showed altered functional connectivity with other language network and occipital areas in IUD. These findings may address the neural background of decreased verbal fluency performance previously reported in the literature, and we emphasize that beside the brain’s reward and inhibitory control systems, the language system is the next candidate to be involved in the pathogenesis of IUD.

Lexical-semantic processing of action verbs and non-action nouns in Persian speakers: Behavioral evidence from the semantic similarity judgment task

The processing of sensory-motor aspect of word's meaning, and its difference between nouns and verbs, is the main topic of neurolinguistic research. The present study aimed to examine the lexical-semantic processing of Persian non-action nouns and action verbs. The possible effects of semantic correlates on noun/verb dissociation were evaluated without morphological confound. A total of 62 neurologically intact Persian speakers responded to a computerized semantic similarity judgment task, including 34 triplets of non-action nouns and 34 triplets of action verbs by pressing a key. Response Time (RT) and percentage error were considered as indirect measures of lexical-semantic encoding efficiency. We also assessed the latency of hand movement execution with no linguistic demand. The results showed that action verbs elicited more errors and had slower RT compared with object nouns. Mixed ANOVA revealed that the observed noun/verb distinction was not affected by demographic factors. These results provided evidence that the lexical-semantic encoding of Persian action verbs, compared to non-action nouns, requires more support from cognitive sources‏ ‏during the processing of the motor‏-‏related semantic feature. The possible accounts for the different processing of action verbs in terms of semantic view are suggested.

A low-cost open-architecture taste delivery system for gustatory fMRI and BCI experiments

BACKGROUND

Tasting is a complex process involving chemosensory perception and cognitive evaluation. Different experimental designs and solution delivery approaches may in part explain the variability reported in literature. These technical aspects certainly limit the development of taste-related brain computer interface devices.

NEW METHOD

We propose a novel modular, scalable and low-cost device for rapid injection of small volumes of taste solutions during fMRI experiments that gathers the possibility to flexibly increase the number of channels, allowing complex multi-dimensional taste experiments. We provide the full description of the hardware and software architecture and illustrate the application of the working prototype in single-subject event-related fMRI experiments by showing the BOLD responses to basic taste qualities and to five intensities of tastes during the course of perception.

RESULTS

The device is shown to be effective in activating multiple clusters within the gustatory pathway and a precise time-resolved event-related analysis is shown to be possible by the impulsive nature of the induced perception.

COMPARISON WITH EXISTING METHOD(S)

This gustometer represents the first implementation of a low-cost, easily replicable and portable device that is suitable for all kinds of fMRI taste experiments. Its scalability will boost the experimental design of more complex multi-dimensional fMRI studies of the human taste pathway.

CONCLUSIONS

The gustometer represents a valid open-architecture alternative to other available devices and its spread and development may contribute to an increased standardization of experimental designs in human fMRI studies of taste perception and pave the way to the development of novel taste-related BCIs.
