Abstract
Lots of studies have been carried out on characteristic of epileptic Electroencephalograph (EEG). However, traditional EEG characteristic research methods lack exploration of spatial information. To study the characteristics of epileptic EEG signals from the perspective of the whole brain, this paper proposed combination methods of multi-channel characteristics from time-frequency and spatial domains. This paper was from two aspects: Firstly, signals were converted into 2D Hilbert Spectrum (HS) images which reflected the time-frequency characteristics by Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT). These images were identified by Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model whose sensitivity was 99.8%, accuracy was 98.7%, specificity was 97.4%, F1-score was 98.7%, and AUC-ROC was 99.9%. Secondly, the multi-channel signals were converted into brain networks which reflected the spatial characteristics by Symbolic Transfer Entropy (STE) among different channels EEG. And the results show that there are different network properties between ictal and interictal phase and the signals during the ictal enter the synchronization state more quickly, which was verified by Kuramoto model. To summarize, our results show that there was different characteristics among channels for the ictal and interictal phase, which can provide effective physical non-invasive indicators for the identification and prediction of epileptic seizures.

Abstract
Electroencephalography (EEG) is a brain imaging approach that has been widely used in neuroscience and clinical settings. The conventional EEG analyses usually require pre-defined frequency bands when characterizing neural oscillations and extracting features for classifying EEG signals. However, neural responses are naturally heterogeneous by showing variations in frequency bands of brainwaves and peak frequencies of oscillatory modes across individuals. Fail to account for such variations might result in information loss and classifiers with low accuracy but high variation across individuals. To address these issues, we present a systematic time-frequency analysis approach for analyzing scalp EEG signals. In particular, we propose a data-driven method to compute the subject-specific frequency bands for brain oscillations via Hilbert-Huang Transform, lifting the restriction of using fixed frequency bands for all subjects. Then, we propose two novel metrics to quantify the power and frequency aspects of brainwaves represented by sub-signals decomposed from the EEG signals. The effectiveness of the proposed metrics are tested on two scalp EEG datasets and compared with four commonly used features sets extracted from wavelet and Hilbert-Huang Transform. The validation results show that the proposed metrics are more discriminatory than other features leading to accuracies in the range of 94.93% to 99.84%. Besides classification, the proposed metrics show great potential in quantification of neural oscillations and serving as biomarkers in the neuroscience research.

Abstract
In this paper, the extracted features using variational mode decomposition (VMD) and approximate entropy (ApEn) privileged information of the input EEG signals are combined with multilayer multikernel random vector functional link network plus (MMRVFLN+) classifier to recognize the epileptic seizure epochs efficaciously. In our experiment Bonn University single-channel intracranial electroencephalogram (iEEG) and Children's Hospital Boston-Massachusetts Institute of Technology (CHB-MIT) multichannel scalp EEG (sEEG) recordings are considered to evaluate the efficacy of the proposed method. The VMD is applied on chaotic, non-stationary, nonlinear, and complex EEG signal to decompose it into three band-limited intrinsic mode functions (BLIMFs). The Hilbert transform (HT) is applied on BLIMFs to extract informative spectral and temporal features. The ApEn is computed from the raw EEG signals as the privileged information and given to the multi-hidden layer structure to obtain the most discriminative compressed form. The scatter plots show the distinct nature of compressed privileged ApEn information among the seizure pattern classes. The linear as well as nonlinear mapping, local and global kernel function, high-learning speed, less computationally complex MMRVFLN+ classifier is proposed to recognize the seizure events accurately by importing the efficacious features with ApEn as the input. The advanced signal processing algorithm i.e., Hilbert Huang transform (HHT) with ApEn and MMRVFLN+ are combined to compare the performance with the proposed VMDHTApEn-MMRVFLN+ method. The proposed method has remarkable recognition ability, superior classification accuracy, and excellent overall performance as compared to other methods. The digital architecture of the multifuse MMRVFLN+ is developed and implemented on a high-speed reconfigurable FPGA hardware platform to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The superior classification accuracy, the negligible false positive rate per hour (FPR/h), simplicity, feasibility, robustness, and practicability of the proposed method validate its ability to recognize the epileptic seizure epochs automatically.

Abstract
We propose objective and robust measures for the purpose of classification of "vaginal vs. cesarean section" delivery by investigating temporal dynamics and complex interactions between fetal heart rate (FHR) and maternal uterine contraction (UC) recordings from cardiotocographic (CTG) traces. Multivariate extension of empirical mode decomposition (EMD) yields intrinsic scales embedded in UC-FHR recordings while also retaining inter-channel (UC-FHR) coupling at multiple scales. The mode alignment property of EMD results in the matched signal decomposition, in terms of frequency content, which paves the way for the selection of robust and objective time-frequency features for the problem at hand. Specifically, instantaneous amplitude and instantaneous frequency of multivariate intrinsic mode functions are utilized to construct a class of features which capture nonlinear and nonstationary interactions from UC-FHR recordings. The proposed features are fed to a variety of modern machine learning classifiers (decision tree, support vector machine, AdaBoost) to delineate vaginal and cesarean dynamics. We evaluate the performance of different classifiers on a real world dataset by investigating the following classifying measures: sensitivity, specificity, area under the ROC curve (AUC) and mean squared error (MSE). It is observed that under the application of all proposed 40 features AdaBoost classifier provides the best accuracy of 91.8% sensitivity, 95.5% specificity, 98% AUC, and 5% MSE. To conclude, the utilization of all proposed time-frequency features as input to machine learning classifiers can benefit clinical obstetric practitioners through a robust and automatic approach for the classification of fetus dynamics.
