Deep learning solutions for inverse problems in advanced biomedical image analysis on disease detection

Inverse problems in biomedical image analysis represent a significant frontier in disease detection, leveraging computational methodologies and mathematical modelling to unravel complex data embedded within medical images. These problems include deducing the unknown properties of biological structures or tissues from the observed imaging data, presenting a unique challenge in decoding intricate biological phenomena. Regarding disease detection, this technique has played a critical role in optimizing diagnostic efficiency by extracting meaningful insights from different imaging modalities like molecular imaging, MRI, and CT scans. Inverse problems contribute to uncovering subtle abnormalities by employing iterative optimization techniques and sophisticated algorithms, enabling precise and early disease detection. Deep learning (DL) solutions have emerged as robust mechanisms for addressing inverse problems in biomedical image analysis, especially in disease recognition. Inverse problems involve reconstructing unknown structures or parameters from observed data, and the DL model excels in learning complex representations and mappings. This study develops a DL Solution for Inverse Problems in the Advanced Biomedical Image Analysis on Disease Detection (DLSIP-ABIADD) technique. The DLSIP-ABIADD technique exploits the DL approach to solve inverse problems and detect the presence of diseases on biomedical images. To solve the inverse problem, the DLSIP-ABIADD technique uses a direct mapping approach. Bilateral filtering (BF) is used for image preprocessing. Besides, the MobileNetv2 model derives feature vectors from the input images. Moreover, the Henry gas solubility optimization (HGSO) method is applied for optimal hyperparameter selection of the MobileNetv2 model. Furthermore, a bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) model is deployed to identify diseases in medical images. Extensive simulations have been involved to illustrate the better performance of the DLSIP-ABIADD technique. The experimentation outcomes stated that the DLSIP-ABIADD technique performs better than other models.

A CNN based m5c RNA methylation predictor

Post-transcriptional modifications of RNA play a key role in performing a variety of biological processes, such as stability and immune tolerance, RNA splicing, protein translation and RNA degradation. One of these RNA modifications is m5c which participates in various cellular functions like RNA structural stability and translation efficiency, got popularity among biologists. By applying biological experiments to detect RNA m5c methylation sites would require much more efforts, time and money. Most of the researchers are using pre-processed RNA sequences of 41 nucleotides where the methylated cytosine is in the center. Therefore, it is possible that some of the information around these motif may have lost. The conventional methods are unable to process the RNA sequence directly due to high dimensionality and thus need optimized techniques for better features extraction. To handle the above challenges the goal of this study is to employ an end-to-end, 1D CNN based model to classify and interpret m5c methylated data sites. Moreover, our aim is to analyze the sequence in its full length where the methylated cytosine may not be in the center. The evaluation of the proposed architecture showed a promising results by outperforming state-of-the-art techniques in terms of sensitivity and accuracy. Our model achieve 96.70% sensitivity and 96.21% accuracy for 41 nucleotides sequences while 96.10% accuracy for full length sequences.

Enhanced Deep Learning Approach for Accurate Eczema and Psoriasis Skin Detection

This study presents an enhanced deep learning approach for the accurate detection of eczema and psoriasis skin conditions. Eczema and psoriasis are significant public health concerns that profoundly impact individuals' quality of life. Early detection and diagnosis play a crucial role in improving treatment outcomes and reducing healthcare costs. Leveraging the potential of deep learning techniques, our proposed model, named "Derma Care," addresses challenges faced by previous methods, including limited datasets and the need for the simultaneous detection of multiple skin diseases. We extensively evaluated "Derma Care" using a large and diverse dataset of skin images. Our approach achieves remarkable results with an accuracy of 96.20%, precision of 96%, recall of 95.70%, and F1-score of 95.80%. These outcomes outperform existing state-of-the-art methods, underscoring the effectiveness of our novel deep learning approach. Furthermore, our model demonstrates the capability to detect multiple skin diseases simultaneously, enhancing the efficiency and accuracy of dermatological diagnosis. To facilitate practical usage, we present a user-friendly mobile phone application based on our model. The findings of this study hold significant implications for dermatological diagnosis and the early detection of skin diseases, contributing to improved healthcare outcomes for individuals affected by eczema and psoriasis.

Deep learning for diagnosis of malign pleural effusion on computed tomography images

BACKGROUND

The pleura is a serous membrane that surrounds the lungs. The visceral surface secretes fluid into the serous cavity and the parietal surface ensures a regular absorption of this fluid. If this balance is disturbed, fluid accumulation occurs in the pleural space called "Pleural Effusion". Today, accurate diagnosis of pleural diseases is becoming more critical, as advances in treatment protocols have contributed positively to prognosis. Our aim is to perform computer-aided numerical analysis of Computed Tomography (CT) images from patients showing pleural effusion images on CT and to examine the prediction of malignant/benign distinction using deep learning by comparing with the cytology results.

METHODS

The authors classified 408 CT images from 64 patients whose etiology of pleural effusion was investigated using the deep learning method. 378 of the images were used for the training of the system; 15 malignant and 15 benign CT images, which were not included in the training group, were used as the test.

RESULTS

Among the 30 test images evaluated in the system; 14 of 15 malignant patients and 13 of 15 benign patients were estimated with correct diagnosis (PPD: 93.3%, NPD: 86.67%, Sensitivity: 87.5%, Specificity: 92.86%).

CONCLUSION

Advances in computer-aided diagnostic analysis of CT images and obtaining a pre-diagnosis of pleural fluid may reduce the need for interventional procedures by guiding physicians about which patients may have malignancies. Thus, it is cost and time-saving in patient management, allowing earlier diagnosis and treatment.

Accurate Detection of Alzheimer's Disease Using Lightweight Deep Learning Model on MRI Data

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cognitive impairment and aberrant protein deposition in the brain. Therefore, the early detection of AD is crucial for the development of effective treatments and interventions, as the disease is more responsive to treatment in its early stages. It is worth mentioning that deep learning techniques have been successfully applied in recent years to a wide range of medical imaging tasks, including the detection of AD. These techniques have the ability to automatically learn and extract features from large datasets, making them well suited for the analysis of complex medical images. In this paper, we propose an improved lightweight deep learning model for the accurate detection of AD from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images. Our proposed model achieves high detection performance without the need for deeper layers and eliminates the use of traditional methods such as feature extraction and classification by combining them all into one stage. Furthermore, our proposed method consists of only seven layers, making the system less complex than other previous deep models and less time-consuming to process. We evaluate our proposed model using a publicly available Kaggle dataset, which contains a large number of records in a small dataset size of only 36 Megabytes. Our model achieved an overall accuracy of 99.22% for binary classification and 95.93% for multi-classification tasks, which outperformed other previous models. Our study is the first to combine all methods used in the publicly available Kaggle dataset for AD detection, enabling researchers to work on a dataset with new challenges. Our findings show the effectiveness of our lightweight deep learning framework to achieve high accuracy in the classification of AD.

Efficient Lightweight Multimodel Deep Fusion Based on ECG for Arrhythmia Classification

An arrhythmia happens when the electrical signals that organize the heartbeat do not work accurately. Most cases of arrhythmias may increase the risk of stroke or cardiac arrest. As a result, early detection of arrhythmia reduces fatality rates. This research aims to provide a lightweight multimodel based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) that can transfer knowledge from many lightweight deep learning models and decant it into one model to aid in the diagnosis of arrhythmia by using electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. Thus, we gained a multimodel able to classify arrhythmia from ECG signals. Our system's effectiveness is examined by using a publicly accessible database and a comparison to the current methodologies for arrhythmia classification. The results we achieved by using our multimodel are better than those obtained by using a single model and better than most of the previous detection methods. It is worth mentioning that this model produced accurate classification results on small collection of data. Experts in this field can use this model as a guide to help them make decisions and save time.

An Efficient Deep Learning Approach for Colon Cancer Detection

Colon cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death in women and the third most common cause of cancer death in men. Therefore, early detection of this cancer can lead to lower infection and death rates. In this research, we propose a new lightweight deep learning approach based on a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for efficient colon cancer detection. In our method, the input histopathological images are normalized before feeding them into our CNN model, and then colon cancer detection is performed. The efficiency of the proposed system is analyzed with publicly available histopathological images database and compared with the state-of-the-art existing methods for colon cancer detection. The result analysis demonstrates that the proposed deep model for colon cancer detection provides a higher accuracy of 99.50%, which is considered the best accuracy compared with the majority of other deep learning approaches. Because of this high result, the proposed approach is computationally efficient.
