Abstract
Unrelated donors (UDs) are the commonest source for allogeneic transplantation (alloSCT), with higher non-relapse mortality (NRM) than siblings. We analyzed data from the Australasian Bone Marrow Transplant Recipient Registry from adults receiving a first UD alloSCT during 2001-2015, to determine whether and how NRM has changed. Predictors of outcome were determined using cox regression, accounting for time-interactions and competing risks. A total of 2308 patients met inclusion criteria. Changes over time included increasing age, utilization of peripheral blood cells, reduced intensity conditioning, and T-cell depletion. Three-year OS increased significantly from 44% in 2001-2005 to 58% in 2011-2015 (p < 0.001). This was attributed to a reduction in NRM from 35% to 24% (p < 0.001) with no change in relapse. Factors associated with increased NRM included age, male sex, CMV seropositivity, HLA mismatch, transplant more than 6 months from diagnosis, and T-cell depletion when administered during 2001-2005. Survival following UD SCT has improved by almost 15% over the past decade, driven by improvements in NRM. This has occurred despite increasing recipient age and appears to be due to better donor selection, reduced delays to transplantation, and improved prevention and management of GVHD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Few Australasian Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation (ASCT) programs perform ASCTs in the private sector. Relatively little is known about ASCT outcomes in the private sector, which varies in care delivery models to the public system. AIMS We investigated transplantation activity and survival outcomes at Icon Cancer Centre's Brisbane-based private clinical and laboratory ASCT program, over a 23-year period. METHODS Retrospective, observational study of all adults who underwent ASCT at Icon between 1996-2018. Main outcome measures were transplant activity, overall survival (OS) and day-100 and 1-year transplant-related mortality (TRM). Outcomes were benchmarked against the Australasian Bone Marrow Transplant Recipient Registry (ABMTRR). RESULTS Between 1996-2018, 1676 ASCTs were performed in 1454 patients. From 2010-2018, ASCTs performed at Icon contributed 40% of all South East Queensland ASCTs. In the last 5-years, 21% of Icon's patients were ≥70-years, compared to 5% across Australasia. For the entire cohort, 100-day, and 1-year TRM was 1.1% and 1.7% respectively, whilst for those aged ≥70-years, it was 2.0% and 3.1%. For ASCTs performed between 2014-2018, 100-day and 1-year TRM was 0.8% and 1.4%, which was half the TRM rates reported by the ABMTRR. The 10-year post-transplant OS at Icon was higher than the ABMTRR data, across all disease subtypes. CONCLUSION Icon is the largest ASCT contributor in Queensland, with excellent OS and low TRM, demonstrating the critical role of the private sector in the administration of this highly complex therapy. Abstract
Supported by clinical trial proven survival benefit, clinical guidelines recommend upfront autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) for eligible MM patients. However, reported real-world utilisation is lower than expected (40-60%). We reviewed ASCT utilisation, demographics and outcomes for MM patients (≤70 years, ≥12-month follow-up) enroled onto the Australian/New Zealand MRDR from June 2012 to May 2020. In 982 patients (<65 years: 684, 65-70 years: 298), ASCT utilisation was 76% overall (<65 years: 83%, 65-70 years: 61%, front-line therapy: 67%). Non-ASCT recipients were older (median age: 65 years vs 60 years, p < 0.001), had more comorbidities (cardiac disease: 16.9% vs 5.4%, p < 0.001; diabetes: 19.1% vs 7.0%, p < 0.001; renal dysfunction: median eGFR(ml/min): 68 vs 80, p < 0.001), inferior performance status (ECOG ≥ 2: 26% vs 13%, p < 0.001) and higher-risk MM (ISS-3: 37% vs 26%, p = 0.009, R-ISS-3 18.6% vs 11.8%, p = 0.051) than ASCT recipients. ASCT survival benefit (median progression-free survival (PFS): 45.3 months vs 35.2 months, p < 0.001; overall survival (OS): NR vs 64.0 months, p < 0.001) was maintained irrespective of age (<65 years: median PFS: 45.3 months vs 37.7 months, p = 0.04, OS: NR vs 68.2 months, p = 0.002; 65-70 years: median PFS: 46.7 months vs 29.2 months, p < 0.001, OS: 76.9 months vs 55.6 months, p = 0.005). This large, real-world cohort reaffirms ASCT survival benefit, including in 'older' patients necessitating well-designed studies evaluating ASCT in 'older' MM to inform evidence-based patient selection.

Abstract
Data on antifungal utilization trends are important to encourage antifungal stewardship. This study explored the utilization of antifungal agents for systemic use and the impact of reimbursement policy changes in Australia. We analyzed national data from the Australian Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) (2005-2016). We examined patterns of use over time and the impact of reimbursement decisions on antifungal use with an interrupted time-series model. In 2005-2016, there has been an increase in the use of most antifungals, especially fluconazole, itraconazole and posaconazole. Ketoconazole was the most commonly dispensed systemic antifungal (46.0%) before its PBS listing removal, when it was replaced by fluconazole (69.8%). The PBS event "Fluconazole and itraconazole restrictions eased" led to increased use of fluconazole (0.025/1000 per day with no delay). Both the largest rates and numerical increase were among obstetricians and gynecologists (1,969%; 1,851 dispensed prescriptions) and dermatologists (1,723%; 1,689 dispensed prescriptions) except general practitioner (2010-2016). This is the first Australian national longitudinal estimate of systemic antifungal use. It shows an overall increase in prescribing of most antifungals during study period, with reimbursement decisions impacting utilization. These data provide a baseline to inform development of national antifungal guidelines and policies to encourage more targeted antifungal stewardship.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE For people with hematological malignancies treated with bone marrow transplantation (BMT), this systematic review aimed to identify, evaluate, and synthesize the evidence examining the effect of exercise training on the outcomes of exercise capacity, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and hospital length of stay (LOS) and to identify any difference in the effect on people treated with allogeneic versus autologous transplantation. METHODS Five electronic databases were systematically searched from inception to December 5, 2020. Prospective studies with a comparator group, with or without randomization, were included if they investigated the effects of an exercise intervention compared with usual care or another intervention in adults who had a hematological malignancy and were undergoing BMT. Primary outcomes of interest were functional exercise capacity and HRQoL; secondary outcomes included strength, fatigue, hospital LOS, and feasibility. Only randomized controlled trials were included in the meta-analyses. Risk of bias was evaluated using the Physiotherapy Evidence Database or Newcastle-Ottawa Scale; the quality of evidence for meta-analyses was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation approach. RESULTS Twenty-four randomized controlled trials and 3 prospective nonrandomized experimental trials were included (n = 2432). There was moderate-quality evidence that exercise improves functional exercise capacity (mean difference [MD] = 29 m; 95% CI = 12.59 to 45.4), global HRQoL (MD = 3.38 points; 95% CI = 0.37 to 6.39), and fatigue (MD = 2.52 points; 95% CI = 0.42 to 4.63) and low-quality evidence for reduced hospital LOS (MD = 2.07 days; 95% CI = 0.43 to 3.72). These effects were more pronounced in recipients of allogeneic transplantation. No serious adverse events were associated directly with exercise in the included studies. CONCLUSION Exercise is safe and improves outcomes, including functional exercise capacity, HRQoL, and hospital LOS in adults undergoing BMT. IMPACT The results of this systematic review support the implementation of exercise programs in adults undergoing BMT, particularly recipients of allogeneic transplantation.

Abstract
There are currently limited Australian data on the outcomes of autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) in elderly multiple myeloma (MM) patients. We present the largest cohort of elderly MM patients aged ≥65 years undergoing ASCT in Australia and report their outcomes based on our two-centre experience. Our study affirms that ASCT is well tolerated, safe and effective in elderly MM patients aged ≥65 years and should be considered an important component of treatment in patients who are fit enough for the procedure.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this exploratory study was to determine the presence and correlates of self-reported cognition in a sample of haematological cancer patients who had undergone allogeneic stem cell transplantation (SCT). METHODS Haematological cancer patients (n = 30) who had undergone allogeneic SCT between one and five years previously and age-matched control participants (n = 30) completed questionnaires assessing cognition, affect, sleep quality and fatigue and an assessment of premorbid IQ. RESULTS Patients reported significantly poorer perceived cognitive ability (d = 1.12) and greater perceived cognitive impairment (d = 0.96) than controls. Lower fatigue was significantly associated with greater perceived cognitive ability (r = 0.75 patients and controls) and less perceived cognitive impairment (r = 0.80 patients; r = 0.57 controls). Interestingly, depression was significantly correlated with perceived cognitive ability in the control group only (r = 0.80). Hierarchical multiple regressions showed that fatigue was a significant predictor of perceived cognitive ability in patients, accounting for 56% of the variance. CONCLUSIONS This study established that self-reported cognitive ability and cognitive impairment was significantly poorer in haematological cancer patients than controls. Furthermore, fatigue was significantly associated with perceived cognitive ability in patients. Future research should focus on identifying interventions that target fatigue in allogeneic SCT recipients in order to improve quality of life throughout survivorship.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ganciclovir (GCV) and valganciclovir (VGCV) are the first-line agents used to prevent and treat cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplant (alloHCT) patients. OBJECTIVE The aim of this work was to describe available data for the clinical pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and toxicodynamics of GCV and VGCV and the potential of a therapeutic drug monitoring strategy to improve outcomes in the alloHCT population. METHODS We systematically reviewed the pharmacokinetics (dose-exposure), pharmacodynamics (exposure-efficacy) and toxicodynamics (exposure-toxicity) of GCV and VGCV in alloHCT patients with CMV infection. Studies including alloHCT patients treated for CMV infection reporting the pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and toxicodynamics of GCV or VGCV were searched for using the PUBMED and EMBASE databases from 1946 to 2019. Only studies involving participants > 12 years of age and available in the English language were included. RESULTS A total of 179 patients were included in the 14 studies that met the inclusion criteria, of which 6 examined GCV pharmacokinetics only, while 8 also examined GCV pharmacodynamics and toxicodynamics. Reported pharmacokinetic parameters showed considerable interpatient variability and were different from other populations, such as solid organ transplant and human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients. Only one study found a correlation between neutropenia and elevated peak and trough GCV concentrations, with no other significant pharmacodynamic and toxicodynamic relationships identified. While therapeutic drug monitoring of GCV is performed in some institutions, no association between GCV therapeutic drug monitoring and clinical outcomes was identified. CONCLUSION Further studies of the pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and toxicodynamics of GCV/VGCV in alloHCT patients are required to identify a more robust therapeutic range and to subsequently quantify the potential value of therapeutic drug monitoring of GCV/VGCV in the alloHCT population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Results have been varied regarding the effect of donor age on the outcome of unrelated donor hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). AIMS This study sought to determine the influence of donor age on adult unrelated donor HCT outcome in Australia. METHODS Patients were included in the study if they were aged 16 or above and underwent first allogeneic unrelated donor HCT in Australia for the indications of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), acute myelogenous leukaemia (AML), chronic myelogenous leukaemia (CML) or myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) between the years of 2001 and 2014 inclusive. The main outcome measure was overall survival (OS), which was tested against independent variables using univariate Kaplan-Meier methods and multivariate Cox regression. RESULTS A total of 1,158 unrelated donor HCT were represented in the data. Cumulative incidences of engraftment, transplant related mortality (TRM), acute graft-versus-host disease (GvHD), chronic GvHD and relapse were not significantly affected by donor age. OS probability at 5 years post-transplant was 48.3%. In multivariate analysis of OS, year of transplant 2001-2007, recipient age 40 years or greater, poor risk disease, HLA match less than 6/6 and poor performance status at transplant (Karnofsky scale) were independently significant adverse OS risk factors. Donor age was not a significant risk factor for OS in univariate or multivariate analysis. CONCLUSIONS The conclusion from this study was that donor age (up to 59 years) did not influence post-transplant outcome among adult unrelated donor HCT performed in Australia for hematologic malignancies. Abstract
BACKGROUND The Townsville Hospital is a tertiary hospital in North Queensland with one of the largest regional transplant centres in Australia, performing primarily autologous haemopoietic stem cell transplants (HSCT) for various haematological malignancies. AIMS This single-centre, retrospective, observational study aims to describe the activity and outcomes of autologous HSCT at The Townsville Hospital between 2003 and 2017 to verify safety standards. METHODS Patient-level data were collected, including demographics, frequency and indication for transplant, conditioning, current clinical status and cause of death. Key outcomes included overall survival, non-relapse mortality, incidence of therapy-related neoplasm and causes of death. Progression-free survival in the multiple myeloma (MM) subgroup was also assessed. RESULTS There were 319 autologous HSCT in 286 patients, with a median age of 58 years (range 14-71 years); 62% of patients were male. Indications for transplantation were: MM 53.7%, non-Hodgkin lymphoma 29.4%, Hodgkin lymphoma 5.0% and other 11.9%. Causes of death were: disease progression/relapse (65.2%), second malignancy (17.0%), infection (9.8%) and other (8.0%). Non-relapse mortality was 1.2% (95% confidence interval 0.4-3.0) and 3.2% (1.7-5.7) at 100 days and 1 year, respectively, post-HSCT. Overall survival at 2 years was 81.0% (73.8-86.4) for MM and 69.6% (58.8-78.1) for non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The median progression-free survival in the MM cohort was 3.3 years. CONCLUSION The Townsville Hospital transplant centre provides an important transplant service in regional Queensland, with outcomes comparable to national data. We reported a relatively high rate of second malignancy as a cause of death.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The impact of changes in novel agent (NA) usage on the survival of multiple myeloma (MM) patients in real-world hospital settings is unclear. In New Zealand (NZ) in 2011, frontline bortezomib became available and thalidomide availability was expanded. AIM This retrospective study analyses the impact these change had on the survival of MM patients treated at a NZ hospital. METHODS Clinical and overall survival (OS) data were collected on MM patients who were treated at Christchurch Hospital during 2000-2009 (pre-cohort, n = 337) and 2011-2017 (post-cohort, n = 343). Outcomes were compared using pre-cohort data truncated at 2011. RESULTS Patients in the post-cohort had significant increases (P < 0.001) in not only NA usage (85 vs 55%) and OS (median = 56 vs 44 months) but also the proportion (74 vs 49%) of young patients (age < 70) who received an autologous stem cell transplant (ASCT). Separate analysis of older patients demonstrated that those in the post-cohort had significantly longer OS (median OS 28 vs 17, P < 0.001) although 5-year relative survival remained less than 50%. Separate analysis of young patients demonstrated that those in the post-cohort had significantly increased initial OS with the survival curves converging at 5 years. Although ASCT-treated patients had similar OS in each cohort, their progression-free survival (PFS) was significantly increased in the post-cohort (median 40 vs 20 months, P < 0.0001). CONCLUSION In the setting of a NZ hospital the increased availability of NA was associated with a significant improvement in both the OS of older patients and the PFS of ASCT patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Approximately one-third of children with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) relapse, requiring re-treatment and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Although achieving second complete remission (CR2) prior to HSCT is desirable, once CR2 is attained, it is unclear if there is any benefit from further chemotherapy prior to HSCT. Moreover, although pre-HSCT minimal residual disease (MRD) has prognostic value in acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the benefit of MRD reduction after achieving CR prior to HSCT is less clear for AML. PROCEDURE To address these questions, we analyzed data from pediatric transplant centers in Australia and New Zealand concerning relapsed childhood AML cases occurring between 1998 and 2013. Given the retrospective nature of our analysis and assay data available, we analyzed patients on the basis of measurable residual disease (MeRD) by any methodology, rather than MRD in the conventional sense. RESULTS We observed improved overall survival (OS) in children receiving two chemotherapy cycles, compared to one cycle or three or more cycles pre-HSCT. Improved OS with two cycles remained significant for patients without MeRD after cycle 1. CONCLUSIONS These data suggest that a second chemotherapy cycle pre-HSCT may improve survival by lowering disease burden. Prospective trials assessing strategies to reduce pre-HSCT MRD in relapsed childhood AML are warranted.

Abstract
AIM Infection is an important and frequent cause of mortality and morbidity following allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). This study was conducted to determine the epidemiology and clinical phenotype of vaccine-preventable disease in children who have undergone HSCT following the implementation of a standard revaccination programme. METHODS Children receiving first allogeneic HSCT in Western Australia between January 2005 and December 2014 were eligible for recruitment. Patients received standard antimicrobial prophylaxis and were vaccinated according to the West Australian post-HSCT immunisation schedule, commencing 6 months following HSCT. Children who developed any illness post-HSCT were reviewed, and investigations for infectious disease were undertaken as clinically indicated. Positive identification of vaccine-preventable disease was documented with the clinical course of the illness. RESULTS A total of 71 patients were enrolled in the study. The overall incidence of vaccine-preventable disease following HSCT was 19.7%; influenza accounted for 50% of all cases, herpes zoster for 42.9%. All episodes occurred late, beyond day 100 post-HSCT. Overall survival for matched-sibling donor transplants was 83.3 and 75.0% at 1 and 5 years, respectively, and was 72.3 and 63.3% for alternative donor transplants. Mortality due to vaccine-preventable disease was low, with one death from disseminated herpes zoster. CONCLUSIONS There is a high incidence of vaccine-preventable morbidity post-allogeneic HSCT in West Australian children. Viral aetiology constitutes the main burden, namely, influenza infection and varicella zoster virus reactivation. Further efforts are required to identify the most appropriate preventative strategies.

Abstract
We compared the safety and efficacy of haploidentical stem cell transplantation (haplo-SCT) to matched donor SCT (matched-SCT) in treating hematological malignancies. The Medline, Cochrane, EMBASE, and Google Scholar databases were searched through 21 June 2017 using the search term "(hematological disease) AND matched AND (haploidentical OR haplo-identical OR haplo identical OR haplo transplantation OR haplo transplant OR haplo-SCT OR haplo-HSCT OR haplo-HCT)." Twenty-five studies enrolling 11,359 patients (haplo-SCT: 2677; matched-SCT: 8682) were included. The primary outcomes were acute and chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), non-relapse mortality, and 1-year cumulative incidence of relapse. Haplo-SCT was associated with similar risks as matched-SCT for all primary endpoints. Subgroup analysis of patients who received a matched-SCT from a related donor revealed that patients who received haplo-SCT had a lower risk of acute GVHD. Among patients who received reduced-intensity conditioning (RIC), those who received haplo-SCT had a higher risk of acute grade II-IV GVHD and non-relapse mortality than did patients who received a matched-SCT from a related or unrelated donor. Haplo-SCT should continue to be considered as a safe and effective transplant option when a matched donor is unavailable, but it may not be suitable for patients who receive RIC.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aims of this study are to investigate the feasibility of an exercise program commencing 60 days following allogeneic stem cell transplantation (alloSCT), to investigate changes in physical function and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients from pre- to post-alloSCT and to explore changes in patient outcomes before and after the program. METHODS This study is a single site, prospective case series including 43 adults undergoing alloSCT. The intervention was an 8-week outpatient and home-based exercise and education program. Outcomes included feasibility (consent, attendance, compliance and completion rates), functional exercise capacity (incremental shuttle walk test), muscle strength (hand-held dynamometry), self-efficacy for physical activity (Physical Activity Assessment Inventory) and HRQoL (Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Bone Marrow Transplant). Outcomes were measured pre-alloSCT, 60 days post-alloSCT (pre-intervention) and 100 days post-alloSCT (post-intervention). RESULTS The consent rate was 93%. From baseline to 60 days post-alloSCT, there was significant decline in functional exercise capacity (mean difference 224 m, 95% CI 153-295, p < 0.0005), self-efficacy for physical activity (294 points, 95% CI 136-452, p = 0.001) and HRQoL (15 points, 95% CI 8-21, p < 0.0005). Ten participants did not commence the exercise program due to death (n = 5), illness (n = 1) or cancellation of alloSCT (n = 4). The intervention was feasible in those not affected by major medical complications or death. No adverse events occurred. From pre- to post-intervention, there was significant improvement in functional exercise capacity (p = 0.001) and HRQoL (p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS AlloSCT results in significant decline in functional exercise capacity, self-efficacy for physical activity and HRQoL, which may be improved through an exercise program. This pilot demonstrated safety, feasibility and high patient interest. Further randomised research is required.

Abstract
Immunotherapy has changed treatment practices for many hematologic malignancies. Even in the current era of targeted therapy, chemotherapy remains the backbone of treatment for many hematologic malignancies, especially in acute leukemias, where relapse remains the major cause of mortality. Application of novel immunotherapies in hematology attempts to harness the killing power of the immune system against leukemia and lymphoma. Cellular immunotherapy is evolving rapidly for high-risk hematologic disorders. Recent advances include chimeric antigen-receptor T cells, mesenchymal stromal/stem cells, dendritic cell tumor vaccines, cytokine-induced killer cells, and virus-specific T cells. The advantages of nontransplantation cellular immunotherapy include suitability for patients for whom transplantation has failed or is contraindicated, and a potentially less-toxic treatment alternative to transplantation for relapsed/refractory patients. This review examines those emerging cellular immunotherapies that are changing treatment paradigms for patients with hematologic malignancies.

Abstract
Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is one of a range of therapeutic options available to patients suffering from various diseases. HSCT procedure involves important ethical and legal aspects that can occur at every phase of the procedure: the clinical choice of whether to perform the procedure, pretransplantation preparation regimens, donor selection, stem cell harvest procedure, transplantation phase, and short-term and long-term follow-up care. In this discussion paper, we outline the ethical issue-facing physicians involved in HSCT. Currently, HSCT is a widely accepted treatment for many life-threatening diseases. It thus represents a real therapeutic hope for many patients. It does, however, carry a burden of possible morbidity and mortality. Consequently, there are substantial information and communication issues involved in the consent process for HSCT. In the final decision, the judgements of different parties, such as patients, family members, and healthcare professionals, intersect and overlap and this is particularly true when the patient is a minor. Finally, HSCT is a very expensive procedure. The social and economic concerns of HSCT are discussed within the actual contextual framework of the dramatic increase in healthcare costs and inequalities in healthcare in relation to socioeconomic status, educational status, and ethnicity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Successful hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) requires a rapid and durable hematopoietic recovery. AIM: The aim of our study was to analyse factors that influence hematopoietic recovery after autologous HSCT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Multiple regression analysis was used to analyse factors affecting neutrophil and platelet engraftment in 90 autologous transplanted patients – 30 with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), 30 with lymphoma and 30 with multiple myeloma (MM) from 2008 till 2016. RESULTS: The neutrophil recovery in AML patients was significantly influenced by transfusion support with random-donor platelets, sex and number of transplanted mononuclear cells (MNC) and CD34+ cells; and in lymphoma patients, it was influenced by sex, age, mobilisation strategy and some transplanted MNC. The influence of investigated factors on neutrophil engraftment in MM patients was not statistically significant. The platelet recovery in AML patients was influenced by transfusion support with random-donor platelets; in lymphoma patients, it was influenced by sex, age, time from diagnosis to harvesting and time from diagnosis to HSCT; and in MM patients it was influenced by transfusion support with random-donor platelets. CONCLUSION: Additional studies are necessary to better understanding of engraftment kinetic to improve the safety of HSCT and to minimise potential complications and expenses related to HSCT.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aims of this study were to describe the long-term nutrition, body weight and body image issues facing survivors of Allogeneic Blood and Marrow Transplant (BMT) and their impact on quality of life. It also describes survivors' perception of enteral feeding during BMT. METHODS Four hundred and forty-one survivors who had undergone a BMT in NSW, Australia between 2000 and 2012 (n = 441/583) completed the Sydney Post BMT Study Survey (SPBS). RESULTS Forty-five percent of survivors less than 2-year post-transplant reported a dry mouth, 36 % reported mouth ulcers and 19 % had diarrhoea. This was consistent across all survivor groups, regardless of time since transplant. Patients with one or more gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms had significantly lower quality of life scores. There was a significant difference in quality of life scores when comparing those with no GI symptoms to those with one or more symptoms (P = <0.0001). Quality of life was significantly higher in those who once again enjoyed mealtimes (P < 0.0001). Males were more likely to be satisfied with their body weight compared to females (P = 0.009). The median body mass index (BMI) for all patients reporting body weight satisfaction was significantly lower (BMI 23.5) than those reporting dissatisfaction (BMI 27.5) (P = <0.0001). Survivors who had a normal BMI had significantly higher rates of body weight satisfaction compared to underweight, overweight and obese survivors (P = <0.0001). Those survivors who were overweight or obese were significantly more likely to be diabetic (P = 0.008). CONCLUSION This study revealed an important relationship between gastrointestinal symptoms, body weight and body image and survivor's quality of life. It provides further support for the importance of nutrition therapy post-BMT.
