Bm-TFF2, a toad trefoil factor, promotes cell migration, survival and wound healing

Gastroprotective Effects of the Aqueous Extract of Finger Citron Pickled Products against Ethanol-Induced Gastric Damage: In Vitro and In Vivo Studies

Finger citron pickled products (FCPP), as folk remedies, are famous in southern China for protecting gastric mucosa. However, the gastric mucosa protection of FCPP has not been reported yet, and its effective mechanism is unclear. In this study, the protective mechanism of FCPP aqueous extract on gastric mucosa was investigated in vitro and in vivo for the first time, using human gastric mucosa epithelial cells (GES-1) and acute alcoholic gastric ulcer rat model respectively. Furthermore, we also investigated the main substances in the aqueous extract that exert gastroprotective activity using a GES-1 scratch test and basic chemical composition analysis. FCPP aqueous extract was found to play a protective and reparative role in GES-1 by promoting the secretion of trefoil factor thyroid transcription factor 2 (TFF2) and inhibiting the secretion of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in cells damaged by alcohol. The ulcer index of gastric tissue induced by alcohol was significantly decreased (p < 0.01) after pretreatment with FCPP aqueous extract, indicating that FCPP aqueous extract had a good protective effect on the stomach mucosa. Moreover, FCPP aqueous extract could increase superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and inhibit malondialdehyde (MDA) content, exhibiting good antioxidant capacity. Aqueous extract of FCPP could also effectively inhibit the increase of cytokines TNF-α, interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in serum of rats, and promote the increase of anti-inflammatory cytokines interleukin-10 (IL-10) to some extent. Furthermore, FCPP aqueous extract could inhibit the expression of nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB/P65) protein, caspase-1 protein and IL-1β protein in the gastric tissue of rats, while promoting the expression of IκBα protein, indicating that the gastric mucosa protection effects of FCPP aqueous extract were mainly dependent on the NF-κB/caspase-1/IL-1β axis. The polysaccharides in FCPP aqueous extract might be the main components that exerted gastroprotective activity, as demonstrated by GES-1 cell scratch assay. This study confirmed that FCPP aqueous extract presented promising potential in protecting gastric mucosa and avoiding gastric ulcers, which could provide an experimental basis for further utilizing the medicinal value and developing new products of FCPP.

Amphibian-derived wound healing peptides: chemical molecular treasure trove for skin wound treatment

Amphibian-derived wound healing peptides thus offer new intervention measures and strategies for skin wound tissue regeneration. As novel drug lead molecules, wound healing peptides can help analyze new mechanisms and discover new drug targets. Previous studies have identified various novel wound healing peptides and analyzed novel mechanisms in wound healing, especially competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs) (e.g., inhibition of miR-663a promotes skin repair). In this paper, we review amphibian-derived wound healing peptides, including the acquisition, identification, and activity of peptides, a combination of peptides with other materials, and the analysis of underlying mechanisms, to better understand the characteristics of wound healing peptides and to provide a molecular template for the development of new wound repair drugs.

Insulin controls cytoskeleton reorganization and filtration barrier permeability via the PKGIα-Rac1-RhoA crosstalk in cultured rat podocytes

Podocyte foot processes are an important cellular layer of the glomerular barrier that regulates glomerular permeability. Insulin via the protein kinase G type Iα (PKGIα) signaling pathway regulates the balance between contractility and relaxation (permeability) of the podocyte barrier by regulation of the actin cytoskeleton. This mechanism was shown to be disrupted in diabetes. Rho family guanosine-5'-triphosphates (GTPases) are dynamic modulators of the actin cytoskeleton and expressed in cells that form the glomerular filtration barrier. Thus, changes in Rho GTPase activity may affect glomerular permeability to albumin. The present study showed that Rho family GTPases control podocyte migration and permeability. Moreover these processes are regulated by insulin in PKGIα-dependent manner. Modulation of the PKGI-dependent activity of Rac1 and RhoA GTPases with inhibitors or small-interfering RNA impair glomerular permeability to albumin. We also demonstrated this mechanism in obese, insulin-resistant Zucker rats. We propose that PKGIα-Rac1-RhoA crosstalk is necessary in proper organization of the podocyte cytoskeleton and consequently the stabilization of glomerular architecture and regulation of filtration barrier permeability.

GDF-5 induces epidermal stem cell migration via RhoA-MMP9 signalling

The migration of epidermal stem cells (EpSCs) is critical for wound re-epithelization and wound healing. Recently, growth/differentiation factor-5 (GDF-5) was discovered to have multiple biological effects on wound healing; however, its role in EpSCs remains unclear. In this work, recombinant mouse GDF-5 (rmGDF-5) was found via live imaging in vitro to facilitate the migration of mouse EpSCs in a wound-scratch model. Western blot and real-time PCR assays demonstrated that the expression levels of RhoA and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP9) were correlated with rmGDF-5 concentration. Furthermore, we found that rmGDF-5 stimulated mouse EpSC migration in vitro by regulating MMP9 expression at the mRNA and protein levels through the RhoA signalling pathway. Moreover, in a deep partial-thickness scald mouse model in vivo, GDF-5 was confirmed to promote EpSC migration and MMP9 expression via RhoA, as evidenced by the tracking of cells labelled with 5-bromo-2-deoxyuridine (BrdU). The current study showed that rmGDF-5 can promote mouse EpSC migration in vitro and in vivo and that GDF-5 can trigger the migration of EpSCs via RhoA-MMP9 signalling.

Bv8-Like Toxin from the Frog Venom of Amolops jingdongensis Promotes Wound Healing via the Interleukin-1 Signaling Pathway

Prokineticins are highly conserved small peptides family expressed in all vertebrates, which contain a wide spectrum of functions. In this study, a prokineticin homolog (Bv8-AJ) isolated from the venom of frog Amolops jingdongensis was fully characterized. Bv8-AJ accelerated full-thickness wounds healing of mice model by promoting the initiation and the termination of inflammatory phase. Moreover, Bv8-AJ exerted strong proliferative effect on fibroblasts and keratinocytes isolated from newborn mice by activating interleukin (IL)-1 production. Our findings indicate that Bv8 is a potent wound healing regulator and may reveal the mechanism of rapid wound-healing in amphibian skins.

Anti-inflammatory mechanism of ginsenoside Rg1: Proteomic analysis of milk from goats with mastitis induced with lipopolysaccharide

Previous investigation showed that intravenous injection of ginsenoside Rg1 had a therapeutic effect on Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide-induced mastitis in lactating goats and it protected animals from lipopolysaccharide challenge via toll-like receptor 4 signaling pathway. The present study was to use proteomic approach to explore the anti-inflammatory mechanisms of Rg1. Nine dairy goats were randomly divided into three groups with 3 animals in each: groups 1 and 2 received intra-mammary infusion of lipopolysaccharide and then intravenously injected with saline or Rg1 solution; animals in group 3 were first intramammarily and then intravenously administered saline solution, and served as a control group. Milk whey at 6 h post lipopolysaccharide challenge was prepared for tandem mass tags based quantitative proteomic analysis. The results showed that 791 proteins were totally identified from the whey. Of them, 98 proteins between groups 1 (lipopolysaccharide + Saline) and 3 (Saline + Saline), and 34 proteins between groups 2 (lipopolysaccharide + Rg1) and 1 were significantly different. Group 1 than group 3 had significantly more inflammatory factors such as interleukin 6, acute phase proteins, blood coagulation factors, complement proteins, and oxidative stress markers while these factors were reduced in group 2 treated with Rg1. In addition, proteins in group 2 associated with peroxisome-proliferator-activated receptor γ activation and recovery of milk fat and production were upregulated compared to group 1. Therefore, Rg1 may exert its anti-inflammatory effect on lipopolysaccharide-induced mastitis in goats via modulating expression of proteins relating to peroxisome-proliferator-activated receptor γ and toll-like receptor 4 signaling pathway.

Exocrine tissue-driven TFF2 prevents apoptotic cell death of endocrine lineage during pancreas organogenesis

During embryogenesis, exocrine and endocrine pancreatic tissues are formed in distinct regions within the branched ductal structure in mice. We previously reported that exocrine-specific inactivation of Pdx1 by Elastase-Cre caused not only hypoplastic exocrine formation but also substantial endocrine defects resulting in diabetic phenotype, indicating the existence of an exocrine-driven factor(s) that regulates proper endocrine development. In this study, we identified Trefoil Factor 2 (TFF2) as an exocrine gene expressed from embryonic day 16.5 to adulthood in normal mice but significantly less in our Pdx1 mutants. Using in vitro explant culture of embryonic pancreatic tissue, we demonstrated that TFF2 prevented the apoptosis of insulin-producing cells but that antagonizing CXCR4, a known TFF2 receptor, suppressed this anti-apoptotic effect in the mutants. Furthermore, the antagonist in normal pancreatic tissue accelerated the apoptosis of insulin-producing cells, indicating that the TFF2/CXCR4 axis maintains embryonic insulin-producing cells in normal development. TFF2 also suppressed the apoptosis of Nkx6.1+ endocrine precursors in mutant pancreata, but this effect was unperturbed by the CXCR4 antagonist, suggesting the existence of an unknown receptor for TFF2. These findings suggest TFF2 is a novel exocrine factor that supports the survival of endocrine cells in the multiple stages of organogenesis through distinct receptors.

Peptides for Skin Protection and Healing in Amphibians

Amphibian skin is not to be considered a mere tegument; it has a multitude of functions related to respiration, osmoregulation, and thermoregulation, thus allowing the individuals to survive and thrive in the terrestrial environment. Moreover, amphibian skin secretions are enriched with several peptides, which defend the skin from environmental and pathogenic insults and exert many other biological effects. In this work, the beneficial effects of amphibian skin peptides are reviewed, in particular their role in speeding up wound healing and in protection from oxidative stress and UV irradiation. A better understanding of why some species seem to resist several environmental insults can help to limit the ongoing amphibian decline through the development of appropriate strategies, particularly against pathologies such as viral and fungal infections.

OA-GL21, a novel bioactive peptide from Odorrana andersonii, accelerated the healing of skin wounds

Nowadays, the number of chronic trauma cases caused by a variety of factors such as the world's population-ageing and chronic diseases is increasing steadily, and thus effective treatment for chronic wounds has become a severe clinical challenge, which also burdens the patient both physically and financially. Therefore, it is urgent to develop new drugs to accelerate the healing of wounds. Bioactive peptides, which are relatively low cost, easy to produce, store and transport, have become an excellent choice. In this research, we identified a novel peptide OA-GL21, with an amino acid sequence of 'GLLSGHYGRVVSTQSGHYGRG', from the skin secretions of Odorrana andersonii Our results showed that OA-GL21 exerted the ability to promote wound healing of human keratinocytes (HaCaT) and human fibroblasts in a dose- and time-denpendent manner. However, OA-GL21 had no significant effect on the proliferation of these two cells. Significantly, OA-GL21 showed obvious ability to promote wound healing in the full-thickness skin wound model in dose- and scar-free manners. Further studies showed that OA-GL21 had no direct antibacterial, hemolytic, and acute toxic activity; it had weak antioxidant activities but high stability. In conclusion, this research proved the promoting effects of OA-GL21 on cellular and animal wounds, and thus provided a new peptide template for the development of wound-repairing drugs.

Mouse- and Human-derived Primary Gastric Epithelial Monolayer Culture for the Study of Regeneration

In vitro studies of gastric wound repair typically involves the use of gastric cancer cell lines in a scratch-wound assay of cellular proliferation and migration. One critical limitation of such assays, however, is their homogenous assortment of cellular types. Repair is a complex process which demands the interaction of several cell types. Therefore, to study a culture devoid of cellular subtypes, is a concern that must be overcome if we are to understand the repair process. The gastric organoid model may alleviate this issue whereby the heterogeneous collection of cell types closely reflects that of the gastric epithelium or other native tissues in vivo. Demonstrated here is a novel, in vitro scratch-wound assay derived from human or mouse 3-dimensional organoids which can then be transferred to a gastric epithelial monolayer as either intact organoids or as a single cell suspension of dissociated organoids. The goal of the protocol is to establish organoid-derived gastric epithelial monolayers that can be used in a novel scratch-wound assay system to study gastric regeneration.

Establishment of Human- and Mouse-Derived Gastric Primary Epithelial Cell Monolayers from Organoids

Organoid cultures generated from gastrointestinal tissues have been an invaluable advancement for in vitro studies of physiological function and disease. Here we present a comprehensive protocol for the establishment and culture of human- and mouse-derived 3-dimensional gastric organoids transferred to 2-dimensional gastric epithelial cell monolayers. We introduce two methods that include the establishment of monolayers from: (1) intact organoids, and (2) single cells dissociated from intact organoids.

βγ-CAT, a non-lens betagamma-crystallin and trefoil factor complex, induces calcium-dependent platelet apoptosis

In recent years, it has been reported that apoptosis may occur in platelets and play a role in the clearance of effete platelets. βγ-CAT, a newly identified non-lens βγ-crystallin and trefoil factor complex from frog Bombina maxima skin secretions, caused several in vivo toxic effects on mammals. Through determined haematological parameters of rabbits, it has been found that βγ-CAT significantly reduced the number of platelets in a time-dependent manner. Here, in order to explore the effect of βγ-CAT on platelets, washed platelets were incubated with various concentrations of βγ-CAT for 30 minutes. We found that βγ-CAT induced several apoptosis events in human platelets, including caspase-3 activation, phosphatidylserine (PS) exposure, depolarisation of mitochondrial inner transmembrane potential (ΔΨm), cytochrome c re-lease and strong expression of pro-apoptotic Bax and Bak proteins. However, βγ-CAT did not significantly induce platelet activation as detected by P-selectin surface expression, GPIIb/IIIa activation and platelet aggregation. In addition, we observed that βγ-CAT-induced PS exposure and ΔΨm depolarisation in platelets are Ca2+-dependent. Taken together, βγ-CAT can induce Ca2+-dependent platelet apoptosis but does not cause platelet activation.

Nitric oxide promotes epidermal stem cell migration via cGMP-Rho GTPase signalling

The migration and reepithelization of epidermal stem cells (ESCs) are the most critical processes in wound healing. The gaseous messenger nitric oxide (NO) has multiple biological effects, but its actions on ESCs are poorly understood. In this study, an NO donor, S-nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine (SNAP), was found to facilitate the in vitro migration of human ESCs (huESCs) in both live-imaging and scratch models. In addition, pull-down assays demonstrated that SNAP could activate the small GTPases RhoA and Rac1 of the Rho family, but not Cdc42. Moreover, the effects of SNAP on the migration and F-actin polymerization of ESCs could be blocked by inhibitors of cGMP, PKG, RhoA or Rac1, and by a specific siRNA of RhoA or Rac1, but not by a Cdc42 inhibitor or siRNA. Furthermore, the roles of NO in ESC migration via cGMP-Rho GTPase signalling in vivo were confirmed by tracing 5-bromo-2-deoxyuridine (BrdU)-labelled cells in a superficial, partial-thickness scald mouse model. Thus, the present study demonstrated that the NO donor SNAP could promote huESC migration in vitro. Furthermore, NO was found to induce ESC migration via cGMP-Rho GTPase RhoA and Rac1 signalling, but not Cdc42 signalling, both in vivo and in vitro.

Functional expression of recombinant human trefoil factor 1 by Escherichia coli and Brevibacillus choshinensis

Background

Trefoil factor 1 (TFF1) mediates mucosal repair and belongs to a highly conserved trefoil factor family proteins which are secreted by epithelial cells in the stomach or colon mucous membrane. TFF1 forms a homodimer via a disulphide linkage that affects wound healing activity. Previous recombinant expressions of TFF1 were too low yield for industrial application. This study aims to improve the expression level of bioactive recombinant TFF1 (rTFF1) and facilitate application potency.

Methods

The rTFF1 gene rtff1 was synthesized, expressed by Escherichia coli and secreted by Brevibacillus choshinensis. The rTFF1s were purified. The polymeric patterns and wound healing capacities of purified rTFF1s were checked.

Results

In Escherichia coli, 21.08 mg/L rTFF1 was stably expressed as monomer, dimer and oligomer in soluble fraction. In Brevebacillus choshinensis, the rTFF1 was secreted extracellularly at high level (35.73 mg/L) and formed monomer, dimer and oligomer forms. Both proteins from different sources were purified by Ni-NTA chromatography and exhibited the wound healing activities. The rTFF1 produced by B. choshinensis had better wound healing capability than the rTFF1 produced by E. coli. After pH 2.4 buffer treatments, the purified rTFF1 formed more oligomeric forms as well as better wound healing capability. Glycosylation assay and LC-MS/MS spectrometry experiments showed that the rTFF1 produced by B. choshinensis was unexpectedly glycosylated at N-terminal Ser residue. The glycosylation may contribute to the better wound healing capacity.

Conclusions

This study provides a potent tool of rTFF1 production to be applied in gastric damage protection and wound healing. The protein sources from B. choshinensis were more efficient than rTFF1 produced by E. coli.

Interleukin-1β-mediated suppression of microRNA-101 and upregulation of enhancer of zeste homolog 2 is involved in particle-induced lung cancer

Lung cancer may be a result of complex factors. Small mineral particle is the well-known inducer of lung cancer. Previous study revealed the high morbidity of lung cancer in Xuan Wei in China, and the main cause of lung cancer is the use of smoky coal there. And it is generally accepted that chronic inflammation induced by small mineral particle may be a cause of lung cancer. But the relationship between chronic lung inflammation and lung cancer is largely unknown. In the present study, we found that silica particle was able to induce the secretion of interleukin-1β from a Xuan Wei lung cancer cell line, XWLC-05. At the same time, microRNA-101 (mir-101) was found to be downregulated by the treatment of silica particle. Interestingly, the interleukin 1 receptor antagonist and interleukin-1β antibody can reduce silica particle-induced downregulation of mir-101. Twenty-four Xuan Wei lung tumor tissues were collected to detect the expression level of mir-101 and enhancer of zeste homolog 2 (EZH2), which is the potential target of mir-101. The results showed that mir-101 was down-regulated and EZH2 were upregulated. Subsequently, the roles of mir-101 and EZH2 in tumor growth and progression in vitro were tested. Overexpression of mir-101 mimics was able to suppress the expression of EZH2 in XWLC-05 cells. And this resulted in the inhibited tumor cell growth and attenuated cell migration. The results in the present study showed that particle can induce the secretion of interleukin-1β. Interleukin-1β subsequently induces the downregulation of mir-101, which may result in the upregulated level of EZH2, and occurrence of lung cancer. We for the first time proposed the role interleukin-1β-mir-101-EZH2 axes in the particle-induced lung cancer. Further study may be needed to decipher the detailed mechanism involved.

Recombinant human CXCL8(3-72)K11R/G31P regulates smooth muscle cell proliferation and migration through blockage of interleukin-8 receptor

Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease with multiple contributing factors. Hyperlipidemia is one of the major independent risks, and interleukin-8 (IL-8), as an inflammatory factor, plays an important role in the development of atherosclerosis. The aims of the study were to examine the therapeutic efficacy of G31P, an antagonist of IL-8 receptor, with a mouse model of hyperlipidemia and the potential mechanisms of G31P through the vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) proliferation and migration in a cell line. In vivo study: Male BALB/c mice were fed a high-fat diet for 6 months. G31P was injected subcutaneously. Blood keratinocyte chemoattractant, lipid profile, and aorta expression of inflammatory factors, matrix metalloproteinases, MMP2 and MMP9 were investigated. In vitro study: A7R5 cells were treated with IL-8 with/without G31P. Cell proliferation and migration were investigated. G31P significantly suppressed the hyperlipidermia-induced abnormal lipid profile and increased IL-8, proinflammatory factor, MMP2 and MMP9 expression. G31P also inhibited VSMC proliferation and migration both in vitro and in vivo. These findings indicate the potential therapeutic effects of G31P in preventing the development of atherosclerosis by antagonizing IL-8 receptor and decreasing the biologic activity of IL-8.

An RCT on the effects of topical CGP on surgical wound appearance and residual scarring in bilateral total-knee arthroplasty patients

OBJECTIVE

To test the hypothesis that topically applied calcium glycerophosphate (CGP) would improve the appearance of the wound following bilateral knee replacement.

METHOD

Healthy patients, aged 45-75 years, scheduled for bilateral total-knee replacement surgery were recruited into the study. One knee was randomly assigned to the treatment group, while the contralateral knee was designated the control (standard care). Subjects were instructed to apply a preparation of 10% CGP in an aqueous lotion to the treated knee once daily for 42 days, starting at the third postoperative day. Functional sealing and cosmetic appearance of the incision were evaluated by two surgeons by direct examination of the patient and then by two experienced assessors from photographs. The investigators qualitatively scored the intensity and extent of erythema along the incision and over the entire knee, the appearance of visible oedema along the incision and over the knee, and the overall clinical impression of wound healing. All four assessors were blinded to the subjects' allocation and the latter two assessors to the initial investigators' assessments. Subjects were also followed up for an additional 46 weeks, giving a total study duration of 12 months.

RESULTS

Twenty patients completed the study. Statistical analysis showed that both the area and intensity of erythema along the incision were significantly reduced in the treated vs untreated knee over the entire study period. The analysis further showed that treatment significantly reduced oedema, both along the incision and across the entire knee. The differences were most marked at the seventh postoperative day and diminished with time. No adverse effects were observed for any patient, in either treated or untreated knees.

CONCLUSION

These data demonstrate that postoperative application of 10% CGP could improve the appearance of the wound following total knee arthroplasty.

The frog trefoil factor Bm-TFF2 activates human platelets via Gq and G12/13 signaling pathway

Bm-TFF2 is an amphibian trefoil factor purified from the Bombina maxima skin secretion that is highly toxic to mammals. We previously reported that Bm-TFF2 activates human platelets via protease-activated receptor 1. In this study, for a better understanding of platelet activation induced by Bm-TFF2, we used affinity chromatography and pharmacological inhibitors to investigate the downstream signaling pathway. Using Bm-TFF2-affinity chromatography, Gq was specifically eluted from the Bm-TFF2-coulped column. Pharmacological inhibitors such as U73122, Xestospongin C, BAPTA-AM and Gö6976 can significantly inhibit Bm-TFF2-induced platelet aggregation. These results suggested that Gq activation and the downstream PLCβ-IP3 receptor-cytoplasmic Ca(2+)-PKC signaling pathway is crucial for Bm-TFF2 to stimulate platelet aggregation. Furthermore, Bm-TFF2 induced strong platelet shape change at the concentrations of 5nM, in which the Ca(2+) mobilization of the platelets stimulated was not detectable. The p160(ROCK) inhibitorY27632 totally inhibited the shape change, indicating that Bm-TFF2 may activate the G12/13 pathway which leads to the activation of RhoA-p160(ROCK). In conclusion, Bm-TFF2 induced platelet activation mainly via the Gq and G12/13 signaling pathway. This study on the signaling pathway of Bm-TFF2 stimulation may help us understand the toxicity of B. maxima skin secretion to the human platelets.

Activation of protease-activated receptor (PAR) 1 by frog trefoil factor (TFF) 2 and PAR4 by human TFF2

Trefoil factors (TFFs) promote epithelial cell migration to reseal superficial wounds after mucosal injury, but their receptors and the molecular mechanisms underlying this process are poorly understood. In this study, we showed that frog TFF2 activates protease-activated receptor (PAR) 1 to induce human platelet aggregation. Based on this result, we further tested the involvement of PARs in human TFF2 (hTFF2)-promoted mucosal healing. hTFF2-stimulated migration of epithelial HT-29 cells was largely inhibited by PAR4 depletion with small interfering RNAs but not by PAR1 or PAR2 depletion. The PAR4-negative epithelial cell lines AGS and LoVo were highly responsive to hTFF2 as assessed by phosphorylation of ERK1/2 and cell migration upon PAR4 expression. Our findings suggest that hTFF2 promotes cell migration via PAR4. These findings will be helpful in further investigations into the functions and molecular mechanisms of TFFs and PARs in physiology and disease.

Mechanisms of action of zinc in acute diarrhea

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

For over a decade, the importance of zinc in the treatment of acute diarrhea has been recognized. More recently, the mechanisms of action of zinc are becoming clearer. This review is focused on the new evidence on the mechanisms of action of zinc in acute diarrhea.

RECENT FINDINGS

The vast majority of data derive from in-vitro studies using intestinal cell lines or from animal model. The positive action by zinc in acute diarrhea derives from a regulation of intestinal fluid transport, mucosal integrity, immunity, gene expression, and oxidative stress. A complex homeostatic network is also able to regulate zinc status at cellular and extracellular level.

SUMMARY

All these data support the use of zinc in the treatment of acute diarrhea, but further clinical studies are needed to explore the selective effects of zinc against specific pathogens responsible for diarrhea.
