Research hotspots and trends in biological agents for psoriasis: Visualization and bibliometric analysis

Psoriasis is a global health concern, and biological therapies have proven to be highly effective in treating psoriatic patients in many countries. We performed a bibliometric analysis of current research on biological agents for the treatments of psoriasis, investigating research patterns and public interest in this area. We conducted a thorough review of articles on biological agents for psoriasis in the Web of Science Core Collection spanning from 2000 to 2022. Our study involved examining the distribution of these articles based on publication year, affiliations, countries, authors, and journals. To visualize this data effectively, we employed bibliometric tools like CiteSpace and the R package bibliometrix. Our analysis encompassed 8,047 publications. The number of papers published sharply increased from 2009, either reaching its peak in 2022 or not yet reaching it. The United States (n = 2,292), Kristian Reich (n = 166), and British Journal of Dermatology (n = 368) emerged as the top countries, author, and journal, respectively, in terms of publication productivity. The burst references predominantly focused on evaluating the safety and efficacy of biological treatments. The keyword citation network identified 11 clusters, with research themes revolving around "double blind", "efficacy", "therapy", "safety", and "psoriatic arthritis" were the research focuses. Additionally, potential future research areas such as "multicenter," "drug survival," and "severity" were emphasized. This study sheds light on the evolving research landscape and public interest in biological agents for psoriasis. The results suggest rapid expansion in this field, with the United States at the forefront. Enhanced international collaboration is recommended, and forthcoming research endeavors may concentrate on predicting treatment outcomes and adverse effects. Researching new biological agents, broadening the indications for biological agent treatment, and creating personalized treatment plans may pave the way for further research.

Roles of ubiquitin-specific proteases in inflammatory diseases

Ubiquitin-specific proteases (USPs), as one of the deubiquitinating enzymes (DUBs) families, regulate the fate of proteins and signaling pathway transduction by removing ubiquitin chains from the target proteins. USPs are essential for the modulation of a variety of physiological processes, such as DNA repair, cell metabolism and differentiation, epigenetic modulations as well as protein stability. Recently, extensive research has demonstrated that USPs exert a significant impact on innate and adaptive immune reactions, metabolic syndromes, inflammatory disorders, and infection via post-translational modification processes. This review summarizes the important roles of the USPs in the onset and progression of inflammatory diseases, including periodontitis, pneumonia, atherosclerosis, inflammatory bowel disease, sepsis, hepatitis, diabetes, and obesity. Moreover, we highlight a comprehensive overview of the pathogenesis of USPs in these inflammatory diseases as well as post-translational modifications in the inflammatory responses and pave the way for future prospect of targeted therapies in these inflammatory diseases.

Identification of Metabolism-Associated Molecular Subtypes of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Purpose

This study aimed to identify the COPD molecular subtypes reflecting pulmonary function damage on the basis of metabolism-related gene expression, which provided the opportunity to study the metabolic heterogeneity and the association of metabolic pathways with pulmonary function damage.

Methods

Univariate linear regression and the Boruta algorithm were used to select metabolism-related genes associated with forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1) and FEV1/forced vital capacity (FVC) in the Evaluation of COPD to Longitudinally Identify Predictive Surrogate Endpoints (ECLIPSE) cohort. COPD subtypes were further identified by consensus clustering with best-fit. Then, we analyzed the differences in the clinical characteristics, metabolic pathways, immune cell characteristics, and transcription features among the subtypes.

Results

This study identified two subtypes (C1 and C2). C1 exhibited higher levels of lower pulmonary function and innate immunity than C2. Ten metabolic pathways were confirmed as key metabolic pathways. The pathways related to N-glycan, hexosamine, purine, alanine, aspartate and glutamate tended to be positively associated with the abundance of adaptive immune cells and negatively associated with the abundance of innate immune cells. In addition, other pathways had opposite trends. All results were verified in Genetic Epidemiology of COPD (COPDGene) datasets.

Conclusion

The two subtypes reflect the pulmonary function damage and help to further understand the metabolic mechanism of pulmonary function in COPD. Further studies are needed to prove the prognostic and therapeutic value of the subtypes.

The immune network in thyroid cancer

The immune system plays critical roles in tumor prevention, but also in its initiation and progression. Tumors are subjected to immunosurveillance, but cancer cells generate an immunosuppressive microenvironment that favors their escape from immune-mediated elimination. During chronic inflammation, immune cells can contribute to the formation and progression of tumors by producing mitogenic, prosurvival, proangiogenic and lymphangiogenic factors. Thyroid cancer is the most frequent type of endocrine neoplasia and is the most rapidly increasing cancer in the US. In this review, we discuss recent findings on how different immune cells and mediators can contribute to thyroid cancer development and progression.
