The effect of oxygen supply on nitrogen removal via nitrite using stored substrate (PHB) as the electron donor in SBRs

Nitrogen removal performance of high ammonium and high salt wastewater by adding carbon source from food waste fermentation with different acidogenic metabolic pathways

Food waste fermentation liquid components, mainly lactate and volatile fatty acids (VFAs), can be used as alternative carbon sources to improve the nitrogen removal efficiency. To investigate the effects of carbon sources generated from food waste (FW) fermentation liquid on nitrogen removal for the treatment of high ammonium and high salt wastewater (HAHS), the lactate, acetate, propionate, butyrate, and their mixtures were added in activated sludge systems operating over 130-days. Lactate and butyrate inhibited nitrifiers by enriching polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs), thus deteriorated nitrogen removal after a long-term period. When fed with acetate or propionate, the dominant glycogen accumulating organisms (GAOs) groups simultaneously realized nitrification and denitrification. The mixed carbon source enhanced microbial community robustness and the transformation of Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA), advancing nitrogen removal efficiency. Mixed carbon source of acetate-propionate was preferred, in which the coexisting groups of GAOs and PAOs enhanced the denitrification rate of denitrifiers and kept balancing with nitrifiers, where the highest denitrification rate (DNR) was 1.05 mg N/(h·g VSS) and the average TN removal efficiency was above 98% under the maximum nitrogen load of 0.48 kg N/(kg VSS·d). In addition, the primary pathways of nitrogen removal were heterotrophic nitrification and denitrification, since the autotrophic nitrifiers were inhibited by the free ammonium and salinity. This study illustrated the differences of nitrogen removal performance and mechanisms with fermentation liquid components as carbon sources processing of HAHS wastewater.

Comparative Study on Advanced Nitrogen Removal of Landfill Leachate Treated by SBR and SBBR

In order to achieve advanced nitrogen removal from landfill leachate without the addition of external carbon sources, a Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) and a Sequencing Biofilm Batch Reactor (SBBR) were proposed for the treatment of actual landfill leachate with ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentrations of 1000 ± 100 mg/L and 4000 ± 100 mg/L, respectively. The operating modes of both systems are anaerobic–aerobic–anoxic. After 110 days of start-up and biomass acclimation, the effluent COD and the total nitrogen (TN) of the two systems were 650 ± 50 mg/L and 20 ± 10 mg/L, respectively. The removal rates of COD and total nitrogen could reach around 85% and above 95%, respectively. Therefore, advanced nitrogen removal was implemented in landfill leachate without adding any carbon sources. After the two systems were acclimated, nitrogen removing cycles of SBR and SBBR were 24 h and 20 h, respectively. The nitrogen removing efficiency of SBBR was improved by 16.7% in comparison to SBR. In the typical cycle of the two groups of reactors, the nitrification time of the system was the same, which was 5.5 h, indicating that although the fiber filler occupied part of the reactor space, it had no significant impact on the nitrification performance of the system. At the end of aeration, the internal carbon source content of sludge of SBBR was equivalent to that of the SBR system. However, the total nitrogen concentration of SBBR was only 129 mg/L, which is 33.8% lower than that of SBR at 195 mg/L. The main reason was that biofilm enhanced the simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) effect of the system.

Nitrous oxide production from wastewater treatment: The potential as energy resource rather than potent greenhouse gas

Nitrous oxide (N₂O), produced from wastewater treatment, is a potent greenhouse gas and has become a global concern in recent years. However, N₂O has also been commonly used as a powerful oxidant for energy generation. As such, an increasing effort has been devoted to explore the energy potential of N₂O from wastewater treatment processes recently. Nevertheless, the holistic knowledge on energy recovery from nitrogen in wastewater is still lacking for facilitating its further development. Striving for sustainable wastewater treatment, this review paper aimed to give the up-to-date status on several essential aspects regarding the N₂O recovery as an energy resource rather than emission as a greenhouse gas, including energy production via N₂O decomposition, main biotic N₂O production sources, the potential bioprocesses used for N₂O recovery, and the possible N₂O harvesting strategies. We then put forward perspectives for N₂O recovery and future challenges to improve our understanding of the energy generation, microbial processes involved and harvesting approaches in order to potentially achieve sustainable wastewater treatment via N₂O recovery.

Aerobic granular sludge operation and nutrients removal mechanism in a novel configuration reactor combined sequencing batch reactor and continuous-flow reactor

A novel aerobic granular sludge (AGS) system called SBR (sequencing batch reactor)-CF (continuous-flow) system merging the advantages of sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) and continuous flow (CF) reactors was developed. The AGS was successfully operated in the SBR-CF system which consisted of four same SBRs (each served as settling tank/anaerobic feeding tank/aerobic reacting tank in turn). The effects of aeration intensity and hydraulic retention time (HRT) on the SBR-CF system were studied. The results showed strong aeration intensity (9.74 h^-1 in this study) and appropriate HRT (9 h in this study) were more favorable to the nutrients removal. The EEM-PARAFAC analysis was applied to characterize the LB-EPS, TB-EPS and domestic wastewater, as results TB-EPS was found play an important role in the biosorption in COD removal of the SBR-CF system. In addition, a preliminary conceptual reaction process model in the SBR-CF system was built using high-throughput pyrosequencing and phylogenetic assignment.

Recent advances in nitrogen removal from landfill leachate using biological treatments - A review

Landfill leachate, generated from the wastes in a landfill, is a type of wastewater with high concentrations of ammonia and organics, causing a serious environmental pollution. Because of its complex and changing characteristics, it is difficult to remove nitrogen from landfill leachate economically and effectively. Hence, nitrogen removal is a significant research priority of landfill leachate treatment in recent years. Biological processes are known to be effective in nitrogen removal. In this work, the biological nitrogen removal treatments were divided into the following processes: conventional nitrification-denitrification process, nitritation-denitritation process, endogenous denitritation process, and anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) process. This manuscript summarized the theories and applications of these approaches in detail, and concluded that appropriate processes should be selected in accordance with different characteristics of landfill leachate, in order to effectively remove nitrogen from all stages of landfill leachate and reduce disposal costs. Finally, perspective on the challenges and opportunities of biological nitrogen removal from landfill leachate was also presented.

Improved performance of simultaneous nitrification and denitrification via nitrite in an oxygen-limited SBR by alternating the DO

In this study, the performance of simultaneous nitrification and denitrification via nitrite was investigated by alternating the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration in a sequencing batch reactor with the DO-control area and the non-control area. In addition, bacterial communities and their metabolic functions were analyzed by high-throughput sequencing technology and phylogenetic investigation of the communities by reconstruction of unobserved states (PICRUSt). The removal efficiencies of NH₄⁺-N and total nitrogen via the nitrite pathway were 97.91 ± 2.04% and 72.28 ± 2.23%, respectively, by maintaining low DO levels (0.7 ± 0.1 mg/L) in the DO-control area. PICRUSt analysis showed that the metabolic potential of the bacterial community for amino acids, nucleotides, coenzymes and inorganic ions decreased, while the relative abundance of key enzymes involved in nitrification and denitrification, and the relative population of denitrifying bacteria increased when the DO decreased from 1.2 ± 0.2 mg/L to 0.7 ± 0.1 mg/L.

Effects of DO levels on surface force, cell membrane properties and microbial community dynamics of activated sludge

In this paper, we employ atomic force microscopy (AFM), fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) technique, phospholipid fatty acids (PLFA) and MiSeq analysis to study the effects of traditional dissolved oxygen (DO) levels (0.71-1.32mg/L, 2.13-3.02mg/L and 4.31-5.16mg/L) on surface force, cell membrane properties and microbial community dynamics of activated sludge. Results showed that low DO level enhanced the surface force and roughness of activated sludge; the medium DO level decreased cell membrane fluidity by reducing the synthesis of branched fatty acids in the cell membrane; high DO level resulted in the highest protein content in the effluent by EEM scanning. Abundance of Micropruina, Zoogloea and Nakamurella increased and Paracoccus and Rudaea decreased with the increase of DO levels. RDA analysis suggested that saturated fatty acids (SFA), anteiso-fatty acids (AFA) and iso-fatty acids (IFA) were closely related to effluent quality as well as some genera.
