Correlation Relationship between Phase Inversion of Pickering Emulsions and Biocatalytic Activity of Microbial Transformation of Phytosterols. Catalysts 2022. Abstract
Microbial transformation of hydrophobic phytosterols into the pharmaceutical steroid precursors AD (androst-4-ene-3, 17-dione) and ADD (androst-4-diene-3, 17-dione) in a water–plant oil two-phase system by Mycolicibacterium neoaurum is a paradigm of interfacial biocatalysis in Pickering emulsions stabilized by bacterial cells. In the present work, phase inversion of Pickering emulsions—i.e., Pickering emulsions turning from water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions into oil-in-water (O/W) ones—was observed during microbial transformation in the presence of high concentrations of crystal phytosterols. It was found that there is a correlation relationship between the phase behaviors of Pickering emulsions and the biocatalytic activity of utilizing M. neoaurum as a whole-cell catalyst. Efficient microbial transformation under the high crystal phytosterol loadings was achieved due to the formation of O/W emulsions where interfacial biocatalysis took place. Under the optimal conditions (volume ratio of soybean oil to water: 15:35 mL, phytosterols concentration in the soybean oil: 80 g/L, glucose as co-substrate in the aqueous culture medium: 10 g/L), the concentrations of AD and ADD reached 4.8 g/L based on the whole broth (16 g/L based on the oil phase) after microbial transformation for 9 days.

Abstract
Background A butyric acid recovery process using octyl acetate is proposed, and the design details of the extraction and subsequent distillation processes were investigated. Ternary equilibrium data for the extractor design were derived from molecular simulations and experimental measurements. Results A new procedure for estimating the thermodynamic parameters was introduced to determine the effect of the parameters on extractor design by comparison with previously reported parameters. Using the proposed recovery process with the newly estimated thermodynamic model, 99.8% butyric acid was recovered from the fermentation broth at a recovery rate of 99%. The energy demand for the proposed process was found to be lower than the average demand for several reported butyric acid recovery processes. Conclusions The investment cost is projected to be lower than that of other butyric acid processes due to the high efficiency of extraction solvent. The recovery cost of butyric acid was comparable to its selling price. Supplementary Information The online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1186/s13068-022-02146-6.

Abstract
The production of bioethanol fuels using extractive fermentation increases the efficiency of the bioconversion reaction by reducing the toxic product inhibition. The choice of appropriate solvents to remove the bioethanol product without inhibiting the fermentation is important to enable industrial scale application. This work applies computer-aided molecular design technologies to systematically screen a wide variety of candidate solvents to enhance the separation, also considering the microorganisms that perform the fermentation. The performance of the candidates was evaluated using a rigorous process simulator for extractive fermentation, assisted by functional group-contribution (QSPR/QSAR) models for the prediction of various solvent properties, including toxicity and life cycle impacts. The solvent designs generated through this approach can provide powerful insights on the kind of molecular structures and functionalities that satisfy the process objectives and constraints, as well the desired sustainability features.

Abstract
The use of lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) as feedstock has received increasing attention as an alternative to fossil-based refineries. Initial steps such as pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis are essential to breakdown the complex structure of LCB to make the sugar molecules available to obtain bioproducts by fermentation. However, these steps increase the cost of the bioproduct and often reduces its competitiveness against synthetic products. Currently, the use of surfactants has shown considerable potential to enhance lignocellulosic biomass processing. This review addresses the main mechanisms and role of surfactants as key molecules in various steps of biorefinery processes, viz., increasing the removal of lignin and hemicellulose during the pretreatments, increasing enzymatic stability and enhancing the accessibility of enzymes to the polymeric fractions, and improving the downstream process during fermentation. Further, technical advances, challenges in application of surfactants, and future perspectives to augment the production of several high value-added bioproducts have been discussed.

Abstract
Biotechnology and bioengineering techniques have been widely used in the production of biofuels, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and food additives, being considered a "green" form of production because they use renewable and nonpolluting energy sources. On the other hand, in the traditional processes of production, the target product obtained by biotechnological routes must undergo several stages of purification, which makes these processes more expensive. In the past few years, some works have focused on processes that integrate fermentation to the recovery and purification steps necessary to obtain the final product required. This type of process is called in situ product recovery or extractive fermentation. However, there are some differences in the concepts of the techniques used in these bioprocesses. In this way, this review sought to compile relevant content on considerations and procedures that are being used in this field, such as evaporation, liquid-liquid extraction, permeation, and adsorption techniques. Also, the objective of this review was to approach the different configurations in the recent literature of the processes employed and the main bioproducts obtained, which can be used in the food, pharmaceutical, chemical, and/or fuel additives industry. We intended to elucidate concepts of these techniques, considered very recent, but which emerge as a promising alternative for the integration of bioprocesses.

Abstract
The use of fed-batch extractive fermentation can overcome inhibitory effects caused by the substrate and ethanol to the yeast cells, since it allows regulate the substrate concentration and remove the product as it is produced. The present study describes the modelling and experimental validation of ethanol production in fed-batch extractive fermentation with in situ ethanol removal by oleic acid in a non-conventional drop column bioreactor (DCB) operated under industrial conditions. The model developed using the hybrid Andrews-Levenspiel equation and ethanol distribution coefficient parameter (KDE) provided an excellent description of the fed-batch extractive ethanol fermentation process with oleic acid. Furthermore, extractive fed-batch fermentation allowed the feed up to 306.6 kg m-3 of substrate (total reducing sugars), with total ethanol concentration in extractive fermentation in the ranging 100.3-139.8 kg m-3 (12.7-17.7 ºGL), 19.9-67.2% higher when compared with the conventional process without ethanol removal. Moreover, this process has the advantage of less effluent generated and energy consumption for ethanol recovery when compared to the conventional process.
