Abstract
In order to explore the operation performance, kinetic characteristics and bacterial community of the short-cut nitrification and denitrification (SND) system, the SND system with pre-cultured short cut nitrification and denitrification sludge was established and operated under different ferrous ion (Fe (II)) conditions. Experimental results showed that the average NH4+-N removal efficiency (ARE) of SND system was 97.3% on Day 5 and maintained a high level of 94.9% ± 1.3% for a long operation period. When the influent Fe(II) concentration increased from 2.3 to 7.3 mg L-1, the sedimentation performance, sludge concentration and organic matter removal performance were improved. However, higher Fe(II) of 12.3 mg L-1 decreased the removal of nitrogen and CODCr with the relative abundance (RA) of Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes decreased to 30.28% and 19.41%, respectively. Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes were the dominant phyla in SND system. Higher Fe(II) level of 12.3 mg L-1 increase the RA of denitrifying genus Trichococcus (33.93%), and the denitrifying genus Thauera and Tolumonas dominant at Fe(II) level of no more than 7.3 mg L-1.

Abstract
The wastewater with a high concentration of organics and salt is a major contaminant in the production of sauerkraut. In this study, a multistage active biological process (MSABP) system was constructed to treat sauerkraut wastewater. The key process parameters of the MSABP system were analyzed and optimized by response surface methodology. The optimization results indicated that the most optimal removal efficiencies and removal loading rates of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and NH4+-N were 87.9%, 95.5%, 2.11 kg·m-3·d-1 and 0.12 kg·m-3·d-1, respectively, with hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 2.5 d and pH of 7.3. Meanwhile, this system could also be improved for the further treatment of COD and total nitrogen by effluent recycle and ozone oxidation. The COD and total nitrogen removal efficiencies of the modified MSABP system were 99.9% and 60.2%, respectively. In addition, the modified system could also reduce the potential harm from high concentrations of NO2--N.

Simultaneous shortcut nitrification and denitrification in a hybrid membrane aerated biofilms reactor (H-MBfR) for nitrogen removal from low COD/N wastewater. WATER RESEARCH 2022; 211:118027. [PMID: 35026548 DOI: 10.1016/j.watres.2021.118027] [Citation(s) in RCA: 23] [Impact Index Per Article: 11.5] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 08/10/2021] [Revised: 12/11/2021] [Accepted: 12/28/2021] [Indexed: 06/14/2023]
Abstract
The residues of nitrogen contaminants due to insufficient organic carbon sources in sewage has always been the main problem faced by wastewater treatment plants in the process of nitrogen removal. In this study, simultaneous shortcut nitrification and denitrification (SND) was achieved in the hybrid membrane aerated biofilm reactor (H-MBfR) for treating low COD/N ratio (∼x223C 4: 1) wastewater. The effects of the aeration pressure and the influent COD/N ratio in H-MBfR were investigated and further optimized by the response surface methodology (RSM). By controlling the dissolved oxygen to achieve SND, the removal efficiencies of NH4+-N, COD and TN of low COD/N ratio wastewater reached maximum values of 95.52%, 96.61% and 72.23%, respectively. Microbial community analysis showed that the influent COD/N ratio had an obvious influence on the microbial community structure. In particular, ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and denitrifying bacteria had a good commensalism when the COD/N ratio was 4.3. Compared to control reactor, the analysis of membrane bio-fouling showed that H-MBfR has a lower amount of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) on membrane and a low concentration of MLSS in bulk liquid, which is helpful for the longer-term operation of H-MBfR.

Integrated self-forming dynamic membrane (SFDM) and membrane-aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) system enhanced single-stage autotrophic nitrogen removal. BIORESOURCE TECHNOLOGY 2022; 345:126554. [PMID: 34906703 DOI: 10.1016/j.biortech.2021.126554] [Citation(s) in RCA: 6] [Impact Index Per Article: 3.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 10/26/2021] [Revised: 12/06/2021] [Accepted: 12/08/2021] [Indexed: 06/14/2023]
Abstract
The membrane aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) is a novel bioreactor technology, facilitating single-stage autotrophic nitrogen removal. Two laboratory-scale MABRs equipped with non-woven fabrics were operated simultaneously without and with a self-forming dynamic membrane (SFDM) filtration module. After 87 days of operation (system start-up), the reactor incorporated with SFDM filtration showed better performance in terms of total nitrogen removal (>80%) and effluent suspended solid (less than1 mg/L) than the MABR in the up flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) configuration (i.e., without SFDM). The incorporation of SFDM has the ability to retain more slow growing biomass (anammox) inside the reactor. Microbial characterization by 16S rRNA-based amplicon sequencing shows that the abundance and composition of microbial communities in two MABR systems were different, i.e., the genusRhodanobacterwas abundant in UASB-MABR, while Calorithrixwas dominant in SFDM-MABR. PCA-based statistical analysis demonstrated a positive association between reactor performance, membrane characteristics and microbial communities.
