Simultaneous degradation of high concentration of citric acid coupled with electricity generation in dual-chamber microbial fuel cell

Nano-hydroxyapatite/carbon nanotube: An excellent anode modifying material for improving the power output and diclofenac sodium removal of microbial fuel cells

Anode material and surface properties have a crucial impact on the performance of MFCs. Designing and fabricating various modified carbon-based anodes with functional materials is an effective strategy to improve anode performance in MFCs. Anode materials with excellent bioaffinity can promote bacterial attachment, growth, and extracellular electron transfer. In this study, positively charged nano hydroxyapatite (nHA) with remarkable biocompatibility combined with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with unique structure and high conductivity were used as anode modifying material. The nHA/CNTs modified carbon brush (CB) exhibited improved bacteria adsorption capacity, electrochemical activity and reticular porous structure, thus providing abundant sites and biocompatible microenvironment for the attachment and growth of functional microbial and accelerating extracellular electron transfer. Consequently, the nHA/CNTs/CB-MFCs achieved the maximum power density of 4.50 ± 0.23 mW m-2, which was 1.93 times higher than that of the CB-MFCs. Furthermore, diclofenac sodium (DS), which is a widely used anti-inflammatory drug and is also a persistent toxic organic pollutant constituting a serious threat to public health, was used as the model organic pollutant. After 322 days of long-term operation, enhanced diclofenac sodium removal efficiency and simultaneous bioelectricity generation were realized in nHA/CNTs/CB-MFCs, benefiting from the mature biofilm and the diverse functional microorganisms revealed by microbial community analysis. The nHA/CNTs/CB anode with outstanding bioaffinity, electrochemical activity and porous structure presents great potential for the fabrication of high-performance anodes in MFCs.

A combined process of chemical precipitation and aerobic membrane bioreactor for treatment of citric acid wastewater

The wastewater generated from citric acid production has a high organic loading content. The treatment and reuse of citric acid wastewater with high organic loading become extremely important. In this study, the performance of calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂) precipitation as a low-cost and environmentally friendly pre-treatment method and aerobic membrane bioreactor (MBR) combined treatment system was investigated for the treatment of citric acid (CA) wastewater. At the first step, optimization parameters such as agitation speed (100, 150, 200 rpm), temperature (30, 50, 70 °C), and reaction time (2, 4, 6 h) for Ca(OH)₂ precipitation as a pre-treatment method were investigated using response surface methodology (RSM) to achieve maximum chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal. Experimental sets were designed using Box-Behnken Design. As a result of pre-treatment with Ca(OH)₂ precipitation, a COD removal efficiency of 97.3% was obtained. Then, pre-treated CA wastewater was fed continuously to the MBR process for 10 days, which was the second stage of the combined process. As a result of the MBR process, 92.0% COD removal efficiency was obtained for 24 h HRT and 10 days SRT. In total, 99.8% COD removal efficiency was obtained when combined process was used and COD concentration decreased from 52,000-114 mg/L. For the treatment and reuse of wastewater from citric acid production, Ca(OH)₂ precipitation and MBR combined treatment systems demonstrated an effective strategy.

Bimetal-organic framework-derived porous CoFe2O4 nanoparticles as biocompatible anode electrocatalysts for improving the power generation of microbial fuel cells

HYPOTHESIS

The relatively lower power density of Microbial fuel cells (MFCs), primarily resulting from weak biofilm habitation and sluggish extracellular electron transfer (EET) at the anode interface, limits their practical implementation on a large scale. To address this challenge, porous CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles could be used as anode electrocatalysts based on the following considerations: (i) the introduction of CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles endows the anode with a rough surface that facilitates biofilm formation; (ii) the positively charged Co and Fe ions improve the interfacial affinity of anodes, enabling rapid immobilization and colonization of negatively bacteria; (iii) the multi-valent metal states of Co and Fe can function as electron shuttles, mediating EET process between biofilm and anode.

EXPERIMENTS

CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles prepared with a bimetal-organic framework (B-MOF) as precursor, were modified to the surface of carbon cloth as the anode of MFCs.

FINDINGS

MFCs equipped with CoFe₂O₄ anode achieved a maximum power density of 1026.68 mW m^-2, which was approximately 3.4 times higher than that of the pristine carbon cloth. Additionally, the biofilm density and viability on the anode were enhanced after CoFe₂O₄ modification. Considering the facile fabrication process and superior electrocatalytic performance, the CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles are promising electrocatalysts for high performance and cost-effective MFCs.
