Small-sized salt-tolerant denitrifying and phosphorus removal aerobic granular sludge cultivated with mariculture waste solids to treat synthetic mariculture wastewater

Iron-enhanced microscale laboratory aerated filters in the treatment of artificial mariculture wastewater: A study on nitrogen removal performance and the impact on microbial community structure

This study investigates the nitrogen removal efficacy and microbial community dynamics in seawater aquaculture effluent treatment using three different substrate combinations of microscale laboratory aerated filters (MFs) - MF1 (LECA), MF2 (LECA/Fe-C), and MF3 (LECA/Pyrite). The findings indicated that the COD removal exceeded 95% across all MFs, with higher removal efficiencies in MF2 and MF3. In terms of nitrogen removal performance, MF2 exhibited the highest average nitrogen removal of 93.17%, achieving a 12.35% and 3.56% increase compared to MF1 (80.82%) and MF3 (89.61%), respectively. High-throughput sequencing analysis revealed that the Fe-C substrate significantly enhanced the diversity of the microbial community. Notably, in MF2, the salinophilic denitrifying bacterium Halomonas was significantly enriched, accounting for 42.6% of the total microbial community, which was beneficial for nitrogen removal. Moreover, an in-depth analysis of nitrogen metabolic pathways and microbial enzymes indicated that MF2 and MF3 possessed a high abundance of nitrification and denitrification enzymes, related to the high removal rates of NH4+-N and NO3--N. Therefore, the combination of LECA with iron-based materials significantly enhances the nitrogen removal efficiency from mariculture wastewater.

Salinity stress results in ammonium and nitrite accumulation during the elemental sulfur-driven autotrophic denitrification process

In this study, we investigated the effects of salinity on elemental sulfur-driven autotrophic denitrification (SAD) efficiency, and microbial communities. The results revealed that when the salinity was ≤6 g/L, the nitrate removal efficiency in SAD increased with the increasing salinity reaching 95.53% at 6 g/L salinity. Above this salt concentration, the performance of SAD gradually decreased, and the nitrate removal efficiency decreased to 33.63% at 25 g/L salinity. Approximately 5 mg/L of the hazardous nitrite was detectable at 15 g/L salinity, but decreased at 25 g/L salinity, accompanied by the generation of ammonium. When the salinity was ≥15 g/L, the abundance of the salt-tolerant microorganisms, Thiobacillus and Sulfurimonas, increased, while that of other microbial species decreased. This study provides support for the practical application of elemental sulfur-driven autotrophic denitrification in saline nitrate wastewater.

Microbial community structure and functional prediction in five full-scale industrial park wastewater treatment plants

The development of industrial parks has become an important global trend contributing significantly to economic and industrial growth. However, this growth comes at a cost, as the treatment of multisource industrial wastewater generated in these parks can be difficult owing to its complex composition. Microorganisms play a critical role in pollutant removal during industrial park wastewater treatment. Therefore, our study focused on the microbial communities in five full-scale industrial park wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) with similar treatment processes and capacities. The results showed that denitrifying bacteria were dominant in almost every process section of all the plants, with heterotrophic denitrification being the main pathway. Moreover, autotrophic sulfur denitrification and methane oxidation denitrification may contribute to total nitrogen (TN) removal. In plants where the influent had low levels of COD and TN, dominant bacteria included oligotrophic microorganisms like Prosthecobacter (2.88 % ~ 10.02 %) and hgcI_clade (2.05 % ~ 9.49 %). Heavy metal metabolizing microorganisms, such as Norank_f__PHOS-HE36 (3.96 % ~ 5.36 %) and Sediminibacterium (1.86 % ~ 5.34 %), were prevalent in oxidation ditch and secondary settling tanks in certain plants. Functional Annotation of Prokaryotic Taxa (FAPROTAX) revealed that microbial communities in the regulation and hydrolysis tanks exhibited higher potential activity in the nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) cycles than those in the oxidation ditch. Sulfate/sulfite reduction was common in most plants, whereas the potential occurrence of sulfide compounds and thiosulfate oxidation tended to be higher in plants with a relatively high sulfate concentration and low COD content in their influent. Our study provides a new understanding of the microbial community in full-scale industrial park WWTPs and highlights the critical role of microorganisms in the treatment of industrial wastewater.

Weak magnetic field enhances waste molasses-driven denitrification during wastewater treatment

Waste molasses, the abundant byproducts of the sugar industry, is a cost-efficient carbon source for advanced denitrification. However, the efficiency of waste molasses-driven denitrification is limited by its complex carbon content, hindering its practical application. Weak magnetic field (WMF) is reported to enhance biological nitrogen removal, but its effects on molasses-driven denitrification remains unknown. This study investigated whether the WMF can enhance waste molasses-driven nitrogen removal and explore the underlying mechanisms. It was found that WMF significantly facilitated waste molasses-driven denitrification, with total nitrogen removal efficiency increased by 1.25 times (from 77% to 96%). WMF stimulated the nitrate reductase's activity by 7-18%, and the enhancement was improved as WMF intensified. Quantitative qPCR analysis indicated that the abundances of denitrifying enzymes increased under WMF, which was consistent with the proliferation of denitrifying bacteria Denitratisoma and Devosia. This study has demonstrated that WMF is promising for enhancing complex carbon-driven denitrification processes.

Aerobic granular sludge formation and stability in enhanced biological phosphorus removal system under antibiotics pressure: Performance, granulation mechanism, and microbial successions

Wastewater containing antibiotics can pose a significant threat to biological wastewater treatment processes. This study investigated the establishment and stable operation of enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) by aerobic granular sludge (AGS) under mixed stress conditions induced by tetracycline (TC), sulfamethoxazole (SMX), ofloxacin (OFL), and roxithromycin (ROX). The results show that the AGS system was efficient in removing TP (98.0%), COD (96.1%), and NH₄⁺-N (99.6%). The average removal efficiencies of the four antibiotics were 79.17% (TC), 70.86% (SMX), 25.73% (OFL), and 88.93% (ROX), respectively. The microorganisms in the AGS system secreted more polysaccharides, which contributed to the reactor's tolerance to antibiotics and facilitated granulation by enhancing the production of protein, particularly loosely bound protein. Illumina MiSeq sequencing revealed that putative phosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs)-related genera (Pseudomonas and Flavobacterium) were enormously beneficial to the mature AGS for TP removal. Based on the analysis of extracellular polymeric substances, extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) theory, and microbial community, a three-stage granulation mechanism was proposed including adaption to the stress environment, formation of early aggregates and maturation of PAOs enriched microbial granules. Overall, the study demonstrated the stability of EBPR-AGS under mixed antibiotics pressure, providing insight into the granulation mechanism and the potential use of AGS for wastewater treatment containing antibiotics.

The Effects of Shaking Duration on the Abundance and the Community of Aerobic Denitrifying Bacteria in Shrimp Pond Water and Sediment Samples

With the rapid development of intensive aquaculture, the considerable release of nitrogenous organic compounds has become a serious threat to aquatic organisms. Currently, isolating autochthonous aerobic denitrifying bacteria (ADB) from aquaculture environments is essential for the biological elimination of nitrogenous pollutants. In this study, the enrichment of ADB from shrimp pond water and sediment samples was conducted under different shaking durations. The absolute abundance of total bacteria, nosZ-type, and the napA-type ADB was measured using qPCR. High-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA, nosZ, and napA genes was performed to reveal the community structure of bacteria and ADB, respectively. Our data revealed that absolute abundance and the community structure of the total bacteria, nosZ-type and napA-type ADB, were significantly altered under different shaking durations. Specifically, the order Pseudomonadales, possessing both nosZ and napA genes, was significantly enriched in water and sediment samples under both 12/12 and 24/0 shaking/static cycles. However, in water samples, compared to the 24/0 shaking/static cycles, the 12/12 shaking/static cycles could lead to a higher enrichment rate of aerobic denitrification bacteria indicated by the higher absolute abundance of bacteria and the higher accounting percentage of orders Oceanospirillales and Vibrionales. Moreover, although the order Pseudomonadales notably increased under the 12/12 of shake/static cycle compared to the 24/0 shaking/static cycle, considering the relative higher abundance of ADB in 24/0 shaking/static cycle, the enrichment of ADB in sediment may be efficient with the 24/0 shaking/static cycle.

An integrated process for struvite recovery and nutrient removal from ship domestic sewage

Marine pollution caused by the untreated and substandard discharge of ship domestic sewage has received widespread attention. A novel integrated process for struvite recovery and nutrient removal from ship domestic sewage (SRNR-SDS) based on seawater magnesium source was developed in this study. Removal efficiencies of the total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) for the activated sludge unit in SRNR-SDS process were approximately 67.61% and 41.35%, respectively, under the salinity of 7.85 g/L. The coupling-induced struvite crystallization unit significantly improved the removal efficiency of TN and TP, and the scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction demonstrated that magnesium ammonium phosphate (MAP) crystals were successfully formed on the surface of zeolite. The SRNR-SDS process had an ideal performance for pollutant removal and MAP recovery under the optimal hydraulic retention time of 20 h. The effluent concentrations of COD, NH₄⁺-N, TN and TP in SRNR-SDS process were approximately 34.73 mg/L, 4.31 mg/L, 10.07 mg/L and 0.23 mg/L, respectively, which meet the Chinese and international ship sewage discharge standards. SRNR-SDS process has obvious environmental, social and economic benefits, which could save 6.20%∼57.14% of the operation cost of ship domestic sewage treatment via MAP recovery. The results could provide theoretical and technical support for the development and application of ship sewage treatment process with the functions of pollutant removal and resource recovery.

Enhancing the Stability of Aerobic Granular Sludge Process Treating Municipal Wastewater by Adjusting Organic Loading Rate and Dissolved Oxygen Concentration

Aerobic granular sludge (AGS) application in treating municipal wastewater has been greatly restricted due to its low stability. It has been found that operation parameters have a great impact on stability. The organic loading rate (OLR) and dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration are two very important parameters that impact stability. In this study, the organic loading rate (OLR) and aeration rate were studied to verify their influence on AGS system stability, which is indicated by determining pollutant removal performance, including chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia nitrogen, and total nitrogen (TN). The physical and chemical property changes of AGS and the effects of pollutant removal during the formation of AGS were systematically investigated. The AGS was formed after about 25 days and remained stable for about 45–50 days. The AGS was light-yellow globular sludge with an average particle size of 1.25 mm and a sludge volume index (SVI) of 33.9 mL/g. The optimal condition was obtained at an OLR of 4.2 kg COD/m3·d, aeration rate of 4 L/min, and a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 4 h. The corresponding removal efficiencies of COD, ammonia nitrogen, and TN were 94.1%, 98.4% and 74.1%, respectively. The study shows that the AGS system has great potential for pollutant removal from wastewater.
